My mom was a single parent, and money was usually pretty tight, but she always made everything come together and seem magical for special occasions. For my 9th birthday, she scraped up enough for a strawberry cake mix, icing, and sprinkles. They were marked down and stacked together, like it was meant to be. I remember her worrying over whether it was enough/good enough, and I ended up proclaiming that I loved it so much I wanted the same exact thing next year. I’m 27 now, and it’s become an absolute tradition. Circumstances have changed so much, but my sweet mama still happily makes me my strawberry cake….albeit slightly fancier now lol. Love that you use your still functional cake strips ❤ Not wasteful and like a normal kitchen. I prefer that to youtubers where everything needs to be picture perfect and brand new. It just shows that those cake strips are quality. After all those delicious cakes you baked with them they are still doing their job.
Thank you so much for including metric measurements for this recipe! I find it so frustrating, living in Europe, when recipes are all in cups with no translation. This is excellent and I’m really looking forward to making it. 😊
I needed some kind of inspiration to bake a cake for Mom's birthday - didn't want the same ole' recipes. I came across this video and loved you and loved this recipe. I followed it to a T and it came out perfectly! The smell of the freshly reduced strawberries, the taste of the cake, the frosting...it was a hit!
I just made this for an early Valentine's celebration with some family and they had a fit over it. It was to die for and I could not stop eating it. Will definitely make it again. Thank you!
John you are my hero im so glad you stay true to you. So many youtubers have sold themselves to paid promotion. Its as bead as the 80's epidemic. You produce flawless videos over and over again. Im so proud of you. You are all about the cooking you leave everything else out. John you are my hero!
What I like the most about this channel is that this man does everything so practical and easy to do, in fact he has a real gift, it is that of patience, wisdom and joy, these three words are a very good ingredient to perform such a task and if we add how delicious and beautiful everything he prepares looks, he is a wonderful person!
omg, omg. Dreams do come true! All my life I always get a "chocolate cake or carrot cake" for my birthday from family. I'm grateful for a cake but I do not ever care for chocolate! I knew there had to be a genuine strawberry cake out there. THANK YOU!!!!!!
Thanks for mentioning the raspberry juice to give it more color. Now I'll be questioning if anyone's strawberry cake is pure and thoroughly full of strawberries. As a person living with allergies people tend to leave the smallest details out thinking it's harmless and then out comes the EpiPen or death. This is why I can't eat dessert at people's houses. Thanks for your fresh version, much appreciated.
@@sherrie553 i am pretty sure it is the raspberries - she wouldnt question if a strawberry cake was purely strawberries because she wouldnt be eating it in the first place if she was allergic to strawberries
@@umeriu-b1m I can't tell for sure but I think she is talking about how you can use the raspberry juice to color it as opposed to red food coloring. Red food coloring is a pretty common allergen and something people might not mention is part of a recipe. I was allergic to food coloring as a kid, particularly red #40
I really appreciate him demonstrating the texture of the components. Cooking is such a sense-filled process, and knowing how things should feel (not just look) really helps!
I hardly ever leave comments on UA-cam videos, but I am compelled to say this: John, thank you so much for sharing your passion for baking with all of us, and even including metric measurements, that means so much and makes things so much easier! I really really REALLY appreciate that!Your recipes are awesome and simple to follow, you explain things wonderfully, and every one of your recipes I've tried so far have turned out great (I've made hot cross buns, cinnamon rolls, peanut butter chocolate bars and most recently, this one). This strawberry cake was a hit at my work when I made it for my boss's birthday! It wasn't strawberry season so I used jam instead, it still tasted amazing, but perhaps a bit sweet for me personally. I did the DIY cake strip method to bake my cakes, and never in my life has any cake I baked come out as perfectly as they did this time. They were moist, flat topped and baked super evenly! I now binge watch all of your videos, not just to learn about baking/cooking, but also because they're so calming and even therapeutic, you have such a wholesome and positive energy that makes me feel so happy 😊 Thanks again for making such lovely content. Hope you and your family are always well, and I look forward to all of your videos to come.
I made your last strawberry cake video about a week ago and it was honestly one of the best cakes I’ve ever had. I added some lemon zest to the batter it was so tangy and delicious 😭😭 THANK YOUU
I don’t even bake I just LOVE watching your videos!! They’re so fun to watch, you have such a great personality and your food look so yummy!! When I get a big kitchen I’m going to be doing a LOT of experimenting. You make everything look so easy!
I made this today but baked in 2 8” pans. I definitely recommend doing it in 3 pans since mine were on the verge of overflowing. Delicious cake though!
John, thank you, thank you, thank you! I’ve been searching for an authentic, from scratch strawberry cake recipe for some time. Strawberry cake is my favorite cake of all time. Bless you!
I love the way the cake feels in my mouth!!! One thing Id change tho is the amount of sugar in both the cake and the frosting! Waaaay less sugar for me. I forgot the frosting but what I plan to do with my next cake is to just add 2/3 of sugar since I use strawberry jam too, and I think 1 and 2/3 sugar is already too sweet
OMG this has always been my favorite cake flavor. I would beg my mom to bake me a box strawberry cake with store bought strawberry icing for every birthday as a kid. I haven't had cake in years but I am like way overdue for a slice of strawberry with strawberry icing. I'm going to try this one.
I loved the texture and natural strawberry taste of this cake! 🍓 I halved the recipe and used 1 whole egg rather than 2 egg whites because I didn’t mind for the color of the yolk to mix with the pink. My cake was still a nice color because of the red food coloring💗 I didn’t make the frosting and the bread was still delicious all on its own 😋 Thank you for the recipe!!💕
Why does the way he says the word 'delicious' just warm the cockles of my very soul????😅😅😅😅 And I can imitate him perfectly in case he doesn't have a new recipe ❤❤❤❤
I love how you're giving us a lot of options for the reduction. Good fresh strawberries are hard to get where I'm at, but I have a huge bag of good organic frozen strawberries that I'm definitely gonna use for that
I really appreciate the in-between details you give. Instead of the throw al this together and mix, letting me know you will have to scrape the sides and there may be lumps and that's ok. Those details help to not make me feel lost in the recipes and make perfect dessert.
Hi! You’ve been one of my go-to recipe channel’s for a while now. Starting with your brownies! My husband and I LOVED them! I really appreciate the clarity and precision of your content, and most of all your positivity & optimism that shines through your videos! 😊
I was kind of going through it lately, but I've been feeling better and doing what I love again. Baking!! I bake almost everything you post and today I prepared the cheesecake for the Strawberry Cheesecake from your blog :-) Can't wait to bake this as well!! Thank you for everything!!! Super excited for the book!!!!

You have the best recipes ever! Never once have I been disappointed I will buy your cookbook. Honestly there hasn’t been anything I have made with you on your Chanel that has been delicious. You are a wonderful baker and teacher. You are gifted and I truly appreciate your love for the art of cooking
I wanted to thank you for making my daughters birthday so special, I never baked anything in my life and the cake came out phenomenal everyone was raving over it especially my daughter and the whole house smelled like strawberry cake it was so lovely and a new fond memory of ours 🩷💕🩷
Been trying this recipe. If you want my advice, take the amount of strawberries and triple it. Every time I reduce a pound of strawberries, I get a little over 1/4th a cup of usable reduction.
I used to make this, except that I didn't cook the strawberries first. Sometimes I mashed them and added them to the cake, sometimes I pureed them, and once in awhile used strawberry preserves in the filling, frosting or both. The liquid just means that you use thick yogurt or sour cream instead of milk or buttermilk. That frosting is so pretty.🙂
I think i might like your version better as i haaaate the taste of cooked strawberries. His version is basically homemade strawberry jam, and i know for a fact i don't like the taste of it. Do you normally do a full substitution or part milk part yogurt?
@@lauraeleven7417 "instead" means fully substitute, and I agree it's a good idea. Moreover, if you don't cook the strawberries, there's no need to add food colouring.
Thank you for the recipes.I made the cake for my son and my seft.It was so good and fun to do.My son and my neighbor want the strawberry cake again.Thank you.
I made this cake and the frosting was sooo sweet. My teeth started hurting from it, that usually only happens only after eating a whole bag of candy. Not saying it's bad tho, it was very delicious, but wow, it's rather candy like than cake like
I tried this recipe and it came out delicious, but I have a few questions about it: 1. My cake came out as quite dense, which I actually didn't mind. It created a nice contrast with the fluffy frosting. But it was more like the texture of a biscuit or a really thick donut than a cake. What could have caused this? Did I maybe mix the batter too much? The video says it should have been soft and pillowy. 2. I also noticed that the cake flavor was very, very subtle. It wasn't very sweet and the strawberry flavor was more of a hint. Again, it was almost more like a slightly sweetened biscuit with a hint of strawberry than what you'd think a strawberry cake would taste like. Is this correct for this cake or could it be caused by whatever caused the denseness? Either way, it was absolutely delicious, because the frosting was so soft and sweet and had so much berry flavor that the contrast with the subtler, denser cake created a perfect balance. I made it for my birthday and everyone who was there said they wanted seconds. So evidently I did something right, even if I technically messed up, haha.
Mine turned out very much the same. My strawberries were some of the sweetest I’ve ever had and the reduction was easy and so red it was almost purple. Yet next time also I will add the food color as when baked it was really gray in contrast to the frosting. The strawberry flavor in the cake was very muted though the berries were very intense. I think I’d rather have a wonderful white cake with fresh berries in the center and the strawberry frosting.
I had watched a video on YT about "cakegate" and from then started getting endless cake making videos on my suggestions. Well--I clicked on this yesterday and was so inspired that I made this cake. I only had to go out to buy fresh strawberries, I had everything else already. All I can say is WOW! So moist, so delicious! The frosting is outrageous. I'm subscribing!!
I just made this recipe and it was SO GOOD! The icing is sweet which is really well balanced with the cake! I feel so professional! My family loved it! ❤
Thank you for the tip to use some beet powder or raspberries to amp up the color (rather than food coloring)! You always bring the best energy to you content-never fails to make me smile. Thx!

My husband wants to try different cakes on his birthday (I always do chocolate for mine), so last year he requested lemon and I tried your lemon cake: he looooved it. This year he requested strawberry, so I will definitely try this one. ❤
Once again an amazing bake! 👍 Love the way you sort of carefully measure everything. A little spill never hurt anybody. I bet you were a great teacher before you left the classroom and turned to the kitchen. Your personality is very engaging and I enjoy you. Good luck with the cook book. 😁

It was delicious, light, airy and rich. Never will I ever buy/make boxed cake. Your video and instructions were easy and clear to understand. Thank you! ❤ Going to try carrot cake for my moms next month!
WHATTTTT!!!! I just made this cake for the second time yesterday!! I opened your page to look for a strawberry shortcake recipe because I have some left-over strawberries and found this video! So, when you were eating a piece of the cake I was also! I will post some photos on my Instagram and tag you. Thank you for making this video, but I have to say that my cake came out perfect just by following your recipe! Thanks, and hello from Southern Vermont.
Sadly I was asked to bake for a friend’s Memorial Service. An honour but still sad. I decided to make this as one of the cakes I’ll be bringing because it looks so cheerful. And I think he would’ve liked it 💕Thank you for this recipe. Really enjoy trying your recipes!
I'm sorry but I have to share my experience of making this cake. It is not edible. 720g of sugar for icing? I gave 500 and even the kids couldn't finish the small slice they were given. It's just so sweet I ended up throwing it away. So much work time and ingredients wasted. John I love your recipes. I tried three, including one cake and two chicken recipes and they were absolutely amazing. Is there a recipe for icing that isn't this sweet that I could try to use with this one please? Thank you
Did you add the pinch of salt? I'd put a very generous pinch in with that much icing sugar. It really makes a difference to the overall flavour, definitely don't omit it.
I would have not put that much sugar. Since in the video he didn't put anything raw in the making of the icing you could add a little at a time to taste test to your desire sweetness. That's what I would have done. Instead of 1 cup powder sugar start with 1/4 cup four of a 1/4 cup equals 1 cup
Just try the icing while your doing it???? That's what you do when making anything, you need to taste it Unlike cookies, less sugar won't affect the icing consistency that much
For someone who never have a guts to try bake a cake, this vid looks easy for me to take a first steps to do it. Tq for the complete guide and infor. By looking at your cake here already makes my mouth watering...so tempting. And beautiful cake too..☺
I tried this today for my birthday cake. Maybe my strawberries were tasteless, but it basically came out like a vanilla cake with a hint of strawberry. Still good but I wish I knew where I went wrong! The store was out of frozen strawberries, so maybe it was out of season berries
Nothing went wrong I did his recipe too with fresh strawberries ended up with a cake not even pink in and out and worst over sweet. No longer trusting that guy for any other recipes
@@langeblanc494 I just made it and it was definitely a little too sweet for the icing but overall it was still good. I would definitely prefer a less sweet recipe with more fresh strawberries to go in the middle between layers
Hi John, I bought your new cookbook right when it was released. I love everything I’ve tried so far. Today I made strawberry cupcakes for my granddaughter’s birthday using your recipe in the book and I have to say her eyes POPPED when she saw them! Your recipes are so easy to follow and understand. I love the tips and variations you suggest which I followed today using the strawberry jam cake recipe. They were delicious!! I follow you on UA-cam and love your channel! Thank you so much!!!!
For my husband's birthday I made his Aunt Lois' cherry cake, which is simply amazing. Your butter cream frosting would go very well with it, using cherries instead of strawberries. I'll have to try that next time I make the cake.
I have known and loved this channel for a long time, but had never tried any of the recipes. A few days ago I was craving for strawberry cake, but it was hard to find one from my country with srawberry in the batter, so when I found this, I decided to try. So, here is how ut went: I didn't want food coloring, so I added the 4 yolks. The color turned nice! Kind of yellowish brown. Anyway. Used vegan milk 'cause that was what I had. My flour absorbs way too much liquid, so the batter was firmer, but got a nice texture after baked. Just because of personal taste, I would reduce the sugar and butter a little bit. Made one batch with a bigger cake pan, so it wasn't as beutiful, but... Thanks for a great recipe John! Always explaining everything perfectly!
Oh my goodness, thank you for this, perfect for a birthday today. My beautiful mother just gave me a jar of fresh strawberry freezer jam that she made yesterday so that will be going in. I think I'll blitz it first then strain to remove any large pieces of berry. thank you so much. I really enjoy watching you and love your kitchen ;)
Made this strawberry cake, it was amazing! I made it with a vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream. I will try it with the cream cheese icing next time. Thank you John, love the channel

made this with fresh strawberries and the cake was super super super sweet! i would recommend 300g of sugar in the cake batter instead of 400g.
I think it really depends on the strawberries, I used fresh and it's a good sweet level but the strawberry flavor isn't very prominent.
i always taste the batter for this reason!!

Love that you use your still functional cake strips ❤ Not wasteful and like a normal kitchen. I prefer that to youtubers where everything needs to be picture perfect and brand new. It just shows that those cake strips are quality. After all those delicious cakes you baked with them they are still doing their job.
I never heard of cake strips before and now I consider getting some!
Thank you so much for including metric measurements for this recipe! I find it so frustrating, living in Europe, when recipes are all in cups with no translation. This is excellent and I’m really looking forward to making it. 😊
I ended up buying a set of American measuring cups because I was so annoyed every time I had to convert recipes 😅
Was it way too much sugar in this cake?
In Brazil its more crazy. Because put cup have 200ml, and have a lot of chefs hoo learn in europe metrich, wher thr cup is 240ml
I made this cake this morning. It is so pretty and is a Birthday cake for my little great granddaughter 😊
What I like the most about this channel is that this man does everything so practical and easy to do, in fact he has a real gift, it is that of patience, wisdom and joy, these three words are a very good ingredient to perform such a task and if we add how delicious and beautiful everything he prepares looks, he is a wonderful person!
I made this and it really is scrumptious. My first from scratch cake. Thanks for walking me through it.
Hello Brenda you are gorgeous
Is it the raspberries you're allergic too or the strawberries
@@sherrie553 i am pretty sure it is the raspberries - she wouldnt question if a strawberry cake was purely strawberries because she wouldnt be eating it in the first place if she was allergic to strawberries
@@umeriu-b1m I can't tell for sure but I think she is talking about how you can use the raspberry juice to color it as opposed to red food coloring. Red food coloring is a pretty common allergen and something people might not mention is part of a recipe. I was allergic to food coloring as a kid, particularly red #40
I'm not even a fan of strawberry cake and I want to make this cake! Just beautiful! Bravo!
Righty his videos are nervous system relaxing
I made this today but baked in 2 8” pans. I definitely recommend doing it in 3 pans since mine were on the verge of overflowing. Delicious cake though!
John, thank you, thank you, thank you! I’ve been searching for an authentic, from scratch strawberry cake recipe for some time. Strawberry cake is my favorite cake of all time. Bless you!
I'm always looking for a good real strawberry cake recipe to try. This looks incredible 😍
Well run away. I just did and his recipe was disgusting and over sweet!
@@langeblanc494really?
Channel of cake welcome
Same! Each birthday I requested the box strawberry cake and frosting! 🤗 favorite cake flavor
My mom always made strawberry cake for my birthdays growing up. It's the entire reason I watched this video :)
You haven't had cake in years?? You poor thing!
Yummy :)
You saved yourself no being diabetic not doing his frosting. I did...worst cake ever! Over sweet!
@@langeblanc494try reducing the sugar
I made my frosting a little different, I made it with double cream, mascarpone, the strawberry stuff and icing sugar
It was AMAZING!!!
Why does the way he says the word 'delicious' just warm the cockles of my very soul????😅😅😅😅 And I can imitate him perfectly in case he doesn't have a new recipe ❤❤❤❤
A STRAWBERRY CAKE!!! YAAAAAY!
Thank you! I made cupcakes and my daughter is 18 and she said it was the best cupcake of her life!!! They were a hit, so delicious.
I love how you're giving us a lot of options for the reduction. Good fresh strawberries are hard to get where I'm at, but I have a huge bag of good organic frozen strawberries that I'm definitely gonna use for that
I'm in the comments looking for someone who used frozen berries. Did you end up making the cake?
I really appreciate the in-between details you give. Instead of the throw al this together and mix, letting me know you will have to scrape the sides and there may be lumps and that's ok. Those details help to not make me feel lost in the recipes and make perfect dessert.
Hi! You’ve been one of my go-to recipe channel’s for a while now. Starting with your brownies! My husband and I LOVED them! I really appreciate the clarity and precision of your content, and most of all your positivity & optimism that shines through your videos! 😊
You are literally the only reason that I can bake anything, your videos are so helpful! Thank you so much!
This is the first video I’ve watched on your channel. I’m hooked, and subscribed! Strawberry cake is my favorite, and I’m about to watch your lemon cake video that’s suggested in my feed. Btw, I love the swooping technique and the nod to your Mom. You’re my new favorite!
That lemon cake is so good I made it for Christmas 😋
We baked this cake and it was delicious! If you are thinking of baking the cake do it; probably will be better than the snobby cakes in bakeries.
I made this last weekend and the birthday girl was so happy! I've been in Keto for 2 years and I took 1 fork full and it was amazing. Thanks!
I’ve never had strawberry cake. After seeing this, it’s definitely on my bucket list.
@@lauraeleven7417 Once the cake goes in the oven the strawberries will be cooked.
Not saying it's bad tho, it was very delicious, but wow, it's rather candy like than cake like
I am going to use 4 cups of sugar, not 6 or 7. Thanks for input
Here in Brazil we use twice as much sugar as he used when we don't want the cake to be too sweet
I loved the strawberry cake! Now I am making a blueberry cake with blueberry frosting! Love this recipe! ❤
I tried this recipe and it came out delicious, but I have a few questions about it:
I added a touch of strawberry jello mix and it brightened the flavor and the color
I think my mouth literally watered 😆 my fascination with strawberry based desserts is crazy. Can’t wait to make it!

I just made this recipe and it was SO GOOD! The icing is sweet which is really well balanced with the cake! I feel so professional! My family loved it! ❤
I use dehydrated strawberries when I make frosting that I blend first into a powder, works really good too!
Great idea, thanks.

I cut the amount of frosting in half. It was still a lot
Here in Brazil we use twice as much sugar as he used when we don't want the cake to be too sweet
Just try the icing while your doing it???? That's what you do when making anything, you need to taste it
Unlike cookies, less sugar won't affect the icing consistency that much
Frequent occasional stirring!!! I love it here 🎉❤
This looks like an anime cake it's so beautiful
@@langeblanc494 2:13 He did say he added a drop of red food coloring.
@@flattery1111 I added RED food colorant!!! And trust me he added more than a drop and so did I !!
@@langeblanc494 I just made it and it was definitely a little too sweet for the icing but overall it was still good. I would definitely prefer a less sweet recipe with more fresh strawberries to go in the middle between layers
@@flattery1111 The whole video is tinted towards red to make it look more vibrant than it really is.
Sounds scrumptious :)
