I’m not sure how young adults like these two young men can be so convincing and good at acting in this movie with no previous experience. I’m also not sure how such young adults treat such topics with such maturity and intelligence. It’s amazing and it’s wonderful.❤
There are few movies I’ve seen that I can say captures a piece of the human condition more realistically and elegantly than this one. It was so raw and powerful. The first film I ever wrote/directed tried to execute this theme about how masculinity prevents boys from practicing emotional vulnerability and having intimate, platonic friendships with other boys without it being labeled as romance. It’s a subject that I am deeply passionate about. Seeing a film execute this theme so masterfully was really meaningful to me. I am so grateful that this was made.
I am still in tears from just watching it about an hour ago. As someone who went through suicidal tendencies at an early age of 7,8 or 9, I felt a personal level of connection to this story. I'm 27 now and the feelings that I went through as a kid growing up were very difficult as I had very few people to lean on or trust. I wish I had this film shown to me when I was their age. I am hopeful and grateful that stories like these are being made and shown more nowadays, and thank you to everyone who was a part of this project. I loved this film with all my heart.
@@svenhanse1028 watched it in theatre, still playing here in Australia. I'm sure it will come to the theatres soon for other countries that aren't playing yet.
I hope you are well and yes, the movie is a work of art that opens your heart, letting out all those feelings that so many times we keep to ourselves because the right people are not around. I wish you to have a full life, with many joys, since you have had enough pains.
I’ve been saying this for so long. Homophobia, seriously dissipates male friendship and companionship across the board. Straight or gay. That affects all of us.
Exactly...I've been saying the same thing for years. Patriachy and toxic masculinity thrown into that mix makes it even more hurtful to boys and young men. So much pain and anger for no benefit to anyone.
I'm so happy to have watched this film, even though I'm still wiping out my tears LOL. They probably won't read it but congratulations to everyone involved in the making of it. It is a masterpiece.
A film with a subtle narrative that is only possible with the extraordinary performance of its protagonists. The director was able to assemble a fantastic team of professionals to carry out this project, which is a work of art of cinema. Needless to say, I was deeply moved and I love the chemistry between the three of you.
Been eagerly looking forward to this films release next year- thanks for this spoiler you f*^"king moron. Edit: So if it isn't obvious, please delete your comment so no one else has suffer from your appalling inconsideration
AND same here, Remi is nothing short of amazing, on so many levels. Seeing him smile, and seeing both of the lads smiling at each other truly touched my heart.
Lukas, you have a talented crew, these boys are amazing, handsome, and genuine. I am truly looking forward to see your film 'close' . I already know I can relate to the movies theme, as a boy who grew up in the 70's.
It really is rare that you find two young talents who develop that genuine connection and they really shine in the film together. I hope we see more of Gustav and Eden in the future!
Really looking forward to watching this movie ! Ans that's so cool that he met Eden and then wrote the first few lines of the script, only to have him casted for the same role
Christ this film was hard to sit through, dont get me wrong, it was great, but it was heartwrenching. Had to sit for 5 minutes after the film ended just to collect myself.
Same here. It was overwhelming, but the film was outstanding. The actors delivered authentic, emotionally raw performances - the pain of rejection, frightening insecurity, guilt of negligence, etc. They were brilliant.
After the big MOMENT happened....my eyes were like permanently wet right til the end credits and i dont usually cry at movies. but this movie was so raw, and real, and the direction, cinematography, and bond between the boys and the acting that sells that bond, and then half way through it turns into a completely different movie and is extremely heavy and hard to watch, but sort of beautifully cathartic in a way. On every level, this movie was incredible, and it shocked the hell outa me finding out both remi and leos actors that it was like their first time.
remember, I’m 19 y old girl now and I don’t know when but I’ll make film starring Gustav or Eden or even both of them, I swear, just remember it. Dreams come true, we make them possible;)
Despite the director saying its about the heartbreak of a friendship i felt Remi was in love with Leo or struggling with his sexuality maybe (or those feelings) like he said he had a lot on his mind and couldnt sleep way before they had their issues
Yeah that's what i feel too, i get the impression that remi actually in love with him though i might be wrong, he's a quiet person, most of the time it's leo who seems bothered when their friends ask if they're together or not
I can kind of see that as a valid interpretation. Remi is in love with leo, and is comfortable with it, leo may also be in love with remi but is not comfortable with it being out in the open due to the social pressures and backlask. Also when he was performing at his clarinet recital, the camera lingers on remi, and then cuts to leo and back to remi and you can tell, something is subtlely bothering remi, and i think leo notices it to as he's watching him perform as the camera lingers on leo several times and his facial expression subtlely changes. Also, after their fight, remi locks himself in the bathroom and leo notices it as remis mom tells him to open the door and most viewers would overlook this but its another sutble hint that remi might have been suffering from mental health issues long before being pushed away in addition to the rift formed in his bond with leo. Such an excellent movie and so many possible interpretations. From my perspective though, I think it was purely platonic, and may have possibly developed into a romance in the future had societal pressures not been a thing.
@@ISetYourFaceOnFire Your interpretations sounds really good. Another hint is the laying-together-with-mom-in-garden-scene, when she said that her own son is non very obedient. Together with the bath-key-scene it indicates some trouble with the parents. They didn´t seemed to be a stronghold for the sensitive boy. His friendship was his only anchor, and when he lost this last hold, he took his choice. As you said, the movie implies more than it really shows.
Even the selection of the names could be meaningful: Leo is a lion, strong and powerful but dangerous, symbol for bravery and leadership. Remis in chess, on the other hand, means: undecided, without result, uncertain. If the names are not coincidental, they are a good and meaningful choice.
This film was therapy for me as I had a very similar, intense relationship with my best friend that abruptly ended with his sudden death at 13 also. It destroyed me, the film destroyed me and brought back so many painful memories but allowed me to start to finally begin grieving for him without feeling guilty about how I felt back then and for decades afterwards. There were a couple very subtle clues as to Rémi’s mental health. Not only with the incident in the bathroom where after watching the film a second time, Sophie obviously knew something was wrong with him and therefore forbade any locked doors in the house. Dhont didn’t explain this incident and when Léo asks what’s happening the scene ends without making clear whether or not Léo left at that moment and this was actually the moment Rémi succumbed. Hence, the later scene where Léo sees the broken door frame after being first told that Rémi was gone. The other clue was Rémi’s inability to immediately fall asleep without Léo’s help while they’re laying in bed. Rémi’s mind racing, which indicates a lurking emotional issue with depression that in this case is only stable while his relationship with Léo continues to be strong. Lukas Dhont was brilliant, absolutely brilliant with inserting all of these small but important nuances to the story and left it up to the viewer to interpret. In any case, the film as heartbreaking as it was, vindicated me and how I felt and still feel about the only best friend I ever had and I now feel like I can shout it all out from the highest rooftop and finally get past something that has relentlessly left an eternal lump in my chest. @@ISetYourFaceOnFire
