I loved this movie. The balance between the warmth of their relationship and cold sadness of not understanding the weight of a moment and the impact it will eventually have could only be achieved by this cast and director.
This movie made me cry , not while watching it, but thinking about it days after. I remember being a 11 year old girl. I was not even close to be as confident and independent as Sophie. To have loving Dad that actually talked to you and cared what was going on in your life, in your mind is what moved me. He loved her but also struggled inside but tried to hide it as much as he could for her. Amazing movie!
@@Jesstp true it is a movie you need to process! Can go back and watch again to pick up on subtle signs and words of what both of them were going though.
charlotte is so brilliant. id consider this film perfect, and i dont think that about many. and to think this is her directorial debut? she has a gift being able to translate every aspect of a memory into a film.
I wanted to know more about her relationship with her father in the present? Is he alive? Are they on good terms? Wish the movie gave us a tiny bit more.
I was wondering the same thing, but I was surprised to find out that there's something lonelier and darker in the movie that I overlooked. I recommend watching some reviews about this film here in UA-cam, they uncovered what really happened in the movie to me.
He is not her life anymore that trip was the last time she spent some meaningful time with him ....i think the film relayed that information with the ending....
after watching the movie for myself, and reading some reviews, i think calum actually did commit suicide. u could see throughout the film that he wasn't well, that something was wrong (maybe he was having depression or something like that?). adult sophie envisions scenes of him dancing in what appears to be a nightclub, and he's seen wearing the same clothes he wore when he saw her off at the airport. that is the last memory she has of him. i don't think calum could have moved away from her after that vacation because he seemed so happy and loving with her, so i faithfully believe that he committed suicide shortly after her. (+) the director and her father had a similar vacation, when she was 11 too. and then her father died.
I think the power of the film is in the ambiguity that forces us to create a picture for ourselves that's more intimate or more emotionally specific for us personally
@@hahahahahahahahahahahahaha64 Think it was more his longing to run away from his everyday life and get a job similar to a divers that made him so enthusiastic in the conversation. Your interpretation could be right too tho, although I got the vibe that he still loved the mother of Sophie and was devastated to learn she was getting married over the payphone (but tried to hide it from his daughter).

dude… her accent is so unique. i’ve never heard someone switch in and out of an accent so much and it sound so honest. amazing

Where can I watch this movie

Great movie from the young director. Her unique voice and vision came through the screen. I'll see another film by her if she does one.
She’s done a few short films.
@@Nate-gj7pb she went to Tisch at NYU and did some stuff there

Charlotte has a pretty interesting mix of scottish and american accents
She does whole sentences in one then the next is in the other that's wild
She’s autistic
I think it’s her “professional voice”
Chills!!! Excited to see more from these two.
They are both so beautiful

Im my conclusion I think that calum either commits suicide or he just ghosts Sophie as a father because he feels he not good enough for her

Devastating film
I thought Paul Mescal was 33 or something. It turns out I was wrong.
Is her father gay ? I always wonder !
What gave you that impression?
