- The Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF) has launched legal action challenging the decision of the Minister of Home Affairs to terminate the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP).
This special dispensation regime has offered legal protection to approximately 178 000 Zimbabwean nationals allowing them to live, work and study in South Africa.
It has prevailed for well over a decade, meaning that permit-holders have built lives, families and careers here and contributed to South Africa and its economy.
We are joined by, Zimbabwe immigration federation chairperson, Luke Dzviti to unpack this further.

In any given country, you are a TEMPORARY RESIDENT until you apply for and obtain permanent residence and citizenship...even if you live in that country for 50 years. So South Africa is not your home unless you ultimately become a South African citizen.
Also, every country has to prioritize their own citizens first. Immigration is simply a favour that a country is offering you. And since every country must prioritize their own citizens, the country has a right to limited/restrict immigration based on what works in the best interests of it's citizens.

You will get your pension back if you are employed permanently. It is also an issue that Zim are employed but South Africans aren’t. Employers in South Africa used Zim as cheap labour and subjected them to slavering working conditions that South Africans workers would not tolerate. It’s time to end this and skilled Zim can apply just like other skilled migrants who want to contribute to the development of South Africa 🇿🇦

Greetings to this young man who is so fluent in his comments and am amazed at this big number of people that are meant to return back to Zimbabwe my question is where will the children of these people find schooling because I'm having a problem of finding just one place for a little girl who lives with her perants in my cottage I'm in Bulawayo her perants have had to get her a place in the kumusha's in Masvingo where she only see's her perants once a year in December and she is only seven years old so I'm asking myself if one child has this problem what with the thousands I would really love to get a feed back on this one

The way this guy is speaking, one might think he is President Ramaphosa instructing or rather correcting the Home Affairs Minister on Policy issues of his department. I doubt Zimbabweans would have permitted African nationals in Zimbabwe to argue their case as half as this guy has argued his. I mean, if they despicably treated their own citizens i.e the white farmers and Ndebeles, imagine how they would treat non-Zimbabweans (that is if the record of how Zimbabweans barred African nationals in the 1980s was to be taken into consideration)? South Africa should be praised for its generosity; not criticized.

It seems unfair and inconsistent the way they are being treated. SA is close to becoming another Zimbabwe and the government is fast running out of money so I understand SA can't afford to allow so many illegal immigrants to stay - that's what borders are for. I just think it could handled better.

Point of correction... there are more than 350 thousand Zim nationalities in South Africa not 178 thousand as claimed and guest here knows it very well but bcos his argument is more to a political persuading wing than dealing or focusing on the facts. The reason Zim/Malawi/Lesotho and Mozambique nationalities seems to be on the spotlight it's simply bcos they don't mind working for R60 a day per employee with no benefits what's so ever. Whereby according to SA hard labour act. minimum requirements per an employee should not be less than R160 per day with minimum benefits. Now you can imagine as an employer who are going to apoint first. The truth is... South Africa government is very much corrupt in the borders cos how did so many people went through in without papers. Even the one's do have, majority of them got those papers when they are within the country same Somalis/Pakistan and so forth.
