  • Nearly 200,000 Zimbabweans were granted residency in South Africa in 2008. Now the South African government is trying to kick them out.
In a case that could decide their fate, human rights groups have asked the court to stop the government from doing so. But the clock is ticking, as residence permits will expire at the end of June.
DW’s Christine Mhundwa met a teacher in Johannesburg, who's hoping to remain in South Africa.

They did not lay a lot of foundation for their asserted motive (but maybe it's a well known issue there???). It is true, reducing immigration does not inherently mean xenophobia.
But at the very least it appears a bit exploitative, bringing in cheap immigrant workers then taking away their ability to become citizens. Dangling a carrot, then taking it away at the last second. It seems reasonable to have to uphold their end of a tacit agreement (and at least guarantee application) after someone invests so much of their life.

In South Africa's situation, the term xenophobia is a label that's used to insult South Africans. You've got to stand for what is right regardless of the insults, so long as people's human rights are respected. That means violence should never be the option. The DZP were valid for 4 years (Renamed ZSP in 2014 and in 2017 respectively as ZEP) ....and went on to be renewed accordingly until SA Cabinet decided not to renew them in November 2021.Given the historical background of these permits, there is no where the host country commits to issuing permanent residence permits ifo ZEP holders and that is also not provided for in the laws of RSA. Zim Government (Number 1 Lithium rich country in Africa) is not actively involved in this because they do not want corrective voices. Just because South Africa was welcoming to Zimbabweans, it does not mean that we do not have problems of our own or dilemmas for that matter, Our systems are overloaded in particular healthcare, Social welfare, and policing for these individuals. We were portraying humanity to our fellow neighbors. Now it seems like we have allowed them to overstay their welcome hence this movement is being coined xenophobia move by external organizations like Helen Suzman Foundation with their double standards. There is a lot of poverty and an extremely wealthy frontier in our country yet you will find puppet organizations like Helen Suzman Foundation not coming with engaging efforts to help with our domestic problems. When there are international matters they are the first to lay bear our predicament without course to the world without putting the citizens of this country first.Shame....

12 year temporary permit? And South Africa is Xenophobic? If we are being honest, Zimbabweans said once Mugabe dies they will rebuild their country and now "They would rather live elsewhere"
Dear Africans, please rebuild your countries so that we can also visit. We would also like to rebuild our own.

As an immigrant living in South Africa. I don’t think South Africa is being xenophobic for taking this action. Several years ago they did the same to Angolans living In South Africa. However I must mention that according to the South African constitution the only law they have breached is forcing Zimbabwe nationals to leave the country immediately where as in their constitution it clearly states under the circumstances where a foreign national is no longer permitted to live in South Africa he needs to be given enough time to decide the next country of choice. When ZEP were issued, they knew that this won’t be used to apply for permanent residency , it was a temporary arrangement. If indeed the holders add any value to SA, they need to apply for all other Visas like any other immigrants which the government has had indicated that they are eligible to apply.

Its time heads should turn to the swiss. They have built their country towards wealth exclusively on their own. The minute other countries are involved, they set limitations and their is a tab set to it. SA can deal with their own tabs, why allways be the lessor and follow by example. Why cant sa become the leading example to other countries. If we teach each other how to fish we will all go to bed without being hungry.

Your introduction is dishonest. Those were temporary farm and domestic work permits that corrupt people accepted for work outside of their limits. Please also include South Africa’s own unemployment crisis, for a fair picture of the situation.
One country alone cannot accommodate and feed all of Africa. The infrastructure has not been coping for years, and out of work South Africans do not contribute to the tax base and therefore the country has less money to keep up with its responsibilities.
