  • Watch me use these bits of waste/offcut London Plane to turn a handle for a BBQ Spatula. I love the look of plane, with its interesting grain patterns and thee common sight of burled figure its clear to see this is one of the best looking handles you'll ever see 😉
I couldn't do it without all of my wonderful tools, I have linked the most important ones below, check Axminster out if you're interested in using the best woodturning equipment:

    Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.

Nice! I keep a box that I throw all my scraps into to use for such projects.

Wow, Harry, you really have a “handle” on making good use of cutoffs. 🤣

Great job Harry! Where I live it's difficult finding good wood to turn so all of my jobs are made with scrape wood, and this give me more satisfaction.... I hate wasting wood! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks as always, Umberto! What's the most common species where you are in Italy? I keep every offcut until it literally has no purpose 😆👍🏻

Silver birch, black poplar, olive, cherry laurels, cypress, beech, juniper, alder, oaks and pines are some of the most widespread trees in Italy.

Very nice! Great way to use up scraps. One idea is to put a hole in the end so you can add a loop of leather to hang up the spatula. Many BBQs now have hooks to hang up utensils between using them (just don't do like I did and I forgot my spatula on the BBQ all winter long - got a bit moldy from our wet winters!)

Great grain on the cut-offs. This is a very nice looking handle.
It did confuse me a bit with all the blocks you made.

Hi Harry, I did something similar when my wife ‘lost” a trowel. I found the missing trowel in the ashes of a bonfire!!!

Brilliant Edward 🤣 what wood did you use for the handle?

@@HarrySmithWoodturning I just found a piece of branch in the wood shed, possible holly. I shaped each end, bored a hole for the tang, the piece was quite round with smooth bark so I left the bark on. It has not been lost since!!!!

Nice project. However I cringe when watching you do woodworking with gloves. Especially ones that are already worn and tattered. Great way to get your hand pulled into the lathe or saw.
