You've Never Seen 👀 A Piece Of Wood Like THIS Before! - Wood Turning

- Wow! This piece is a HUGE burl still attached to the tree. Because of how deep it is, it was a LOT of work and very difficult to sand. But, it's a burl and I knew it would have amazing figured grain inside. It did not disappoint! Finished in shellac.

Hi Phil, I am 78 years old and look forward to your videos every week. I feel we have a lot in common, I am a turner, mostly bowls, my dear wife of 58 years passed away in 2021, we watched your videos together. Our daughter was born in 1965 and we almost named her Stephany, but settled on Daphne instead. So my friend when we visit on Wednesday or Thursday evening for the few minutes please know that I like the things you do, your reviews are always interesting, and wood turnings are so good, I have tried to copy alot of your work! So my friend thanks for culling the scam offers but for the legit reviews, for sure I for one, and probably many more will be happy to watch!
Wow what a small world. I , too, am 78 years old, lost my wife of 57 years back in 2021. I got into bowl turning because my wife enjoyed them so much. I can’t think of anyone I would rather watch than Phil. His mannerism and teaching ability is top notch. I also lost a son in 2022 almost a year to the day of losing my wife. Another son had a stroke in September 2022 and is completely bed ridden. Phil makes my Thursday.
I too am 78, but am not a turner. I started my watching experience with this channel! I started knowing the bare minimum about turning and have thoroughly enjoyed learning about it! and I love the conversation! (The other dissimilarity is that I am a woman who has been divorced for almost as long as you were married!)
So, Phil, I love your channel, I even like the reviews, and look forward to seeing what new creation you come up with every week! 💕🌷
Very kind of you, Jewl, thank you! 😊
Well, would you look at that! At 76 I'm the baby in the group! LOL!
How about making a sander on a swivel congratulations your bowl looks awesome ❤great work
You are my Captain Eddy. I started turning 5 years ago during a rough patch, and not only were you my favourite turner, your kind, gently self-deprecating manner brought me much peace. You do what is right for you. You've earned it.
This is so cool and means more to me than you might imagine. If I have helped you learn to do anything, I'm honored and humbled, thank you! 😊
You did this burl proud, Phil! It's a lovely piece with much to catch your eye. Well done, as always! Do your product reviews and enjoy the rewards of your channel. You teach us and entertain us every week with your turnings in wonderful ways. It costs us nothing but time. So, go for it! Thanks for being there for all of us!
Thank you very much, Greg! 😊
Wonderfully said. He is so amazing, I love his channel, my favorite ❤️
Love your channel Phil. You do you! We have the freedom to watch your videos as well as not watch! Some people are just plain silly! Stay warm and keep sharing!
I appreciate that, Caroline, thank you! 😊
Why could anyone care Phil? I think it's a good idea to share what you like. Most of us, not all like the channel for what it is. And that's you Phil.
Thank you, David! 😊
Phil, you are one of the most honest and sincere people I have ever watched. The is nothing wrong to give opinion on a product. I love your videos ( wood turning or product reviews) . Keep up with the wonderful videos! Thanks, Scott
Wow, thank you, Scott! You make me sit up all proud and stuff! 😊
Phil, you should because you take an interesting piece of wood and turn it into a piece of art. Thanks
As much as I enjoy your videos about woodturning, I also recognize it's your channel to share whatever you enjoy-
Whatever you like to share about is all good!
Awesome, thank you, Carolyn, for understanding! 😊
Phil, we would watch you rattle on about anything! We love ya!
Thanks, Daniel! 😊
I would listen to you reading a bus timetable Phil. Love ALL your videos, including the reviews. I say take anything that's offered as long as it interests you, people always have the option NOT to watch. Your work is great and I watch all your videos despite not being a wood turner, keep on keeping on. Best wishes x
Wow, so kind of you, Sonja, thank you! 😊
I love this piece. When I first started watching your channel you did turnings with gaps, inclusions, etc. I always like those best. "The Workman is worthy of his hire". You have provided me with so much FREE entertainment that I am very happy to hear that you can make some money or in other ways profit from your efforts. Rock on Phil!!
I think people are just jealous. They can't get things for them. if you enjoy doing the review for the product and don't have to pay for it you should be able to without negative feedback as you said, they don't have to watch it love the work you do. Have watched every video you have and will continue to do so you are one of the biggest reasons I started to turn wood Keep up the good work mate 👍
Thank you so much, Jerry! 😊
you are so lucky to get that burl, i am jealous !! thanks, BM, AKA , Woodbutcher
No doubt about it, Bryan! 😊
Howdy Phil👋👋 that's a nice chunk of wood
It sure is, Blair! 😊
I love this channel. I have never turned a piece of wood in my life, but when I retire in 5 years I intend on taking a class to see if I actually like it and want to buy my own lathe.
You make such beautiful pieces of art and you make it look so rewarding.
As for the product reviews, as long as you are honest and up front about what the video is, I don’t see any issues.
Thanks for the videos!!
Well said!
Don't wait. If you wait 5 years and you do like it, you will have wasted 5 years, and everything will cost at least 11/2 times what it costs now, and I mean everything. Just drink the cool aid and don't look back.😅😂
Good looking bowl,, as for the reviews, I don't mind them at all. If it's something I might be interested in I watch it, if it's not I skip it. Bought my laser after a review by Gord Rock. I expect those that I subscribe to will give an honest review and point out both positives and negatives. I believe these reviews will be more honest than what I see on ebay or amazon.
Good to know, TC, thank you! 😊
Yup! Don't wait! Just jump into our addiction! Guaranteed no regerts!
What a treasure ! Both wood & spirit !Thanks for your time & effort sir. Keep’em coming !😊
So nice of you, thank you! 😊
I’m not sure how many years I’ve been following you and your videos. I do know this, they’ve always held my interest, mostly because the videos are like sitting with an old friend while he does what he does. Thank you for your hard work!
I'm so glad you choose to spend some of your time with me, thank you for that! 😊
Phil, I say take every advertisement you want, if you like their product show us, some people are crazy to expect you to only do what they want. Great video amazing piece. See you next video.
Wow, as it turns out, you are better! LOL! Thank you, truly, for your comment! 😊
Love the bowl. Your commentary is entertaining, so don't stop.
Okey-dokey, thank you! 😊
What a gorgious chattoyance! The piece looks like an oyster from the inside. Thank you for showing the heavy hits on the gouge at the beginning at normal speed, so I could see I'm not the only one having them. Other turners provide the impression of easy cutting due to increased speed.
Agree, Kerstin, or marble looking, too. I like oyster, though. 😀
You have been doing this for us for a while. Take advantage of what you have earned. You are the best. Thanks.
Thank you, Ken! 😊
Sir, I love this channel and I’m not a wood turner. I/ we watch because of you. Your good at what you do. You take time to show the human side if you. Thank you! We have watched every video and enjoyed them all. We look but generally because don’t say anything because we are novice at best and really want to be‘a. 😊 We do watch your reviews and we don’t buy lol we have no room. Please know that there people out there like us, we care but we are quite 😉. Say what you want to say, review and comment on whatever you want!! If they don’t like it they can move on. Thanks for all you do. Take good care of yourself.
Wow, such a kind comment, Ramona, thank you very much! I really appreciate you taking your time to watch! 😊
That belongs in a showcase! Beautiful!
Thank you, Mark! 😊
It looks prehistoric to me! Another feather in your cap! ASTOUNDING!!
You are simply amazing, that's all there is to it!!
Thank you so much, Colleen! 😊
Mr. Anderson, you made a fantastic bowl! It BEGS to be held and looked at ❤!
Your delivery and honesty likewise beg to be listened to!
Do the reviews as you are doing them now. The ones you want to do and you want to share with us.
Respect.
Thank you kindly, Clayton! 😊
I see a bird , wings up and back like a hummingbird..live watching, Denise , Nottingham England .
Love watching!!!
Cool, thank you, Denise in the home of Robin Hood! 😊
That burl has a wonderful character to it , great job on turning the beautiful piece of wood 🪵 , thanks for sharing it 😅 !!
Thank you, Clarence! 😊
its beautiful Phil, enjoy your bike and ignore any negative comments in that regard 😀
Thank you! 😊
The burl bowl is BEAUTIFUL!!! 👍👍
I'm glad you think so, thank you! 😊
I love the product reviews. In fact I have bought some of them if I needed them. Thanks Phil, love the channel!
Good to know, thank you very much! 😊
For several years, when I heard the words "mask and face shield on", I knew I was going to get a good lesson on wood turning. You have made hundreds of videos over the years and have asked for nothing other than requesting folks to subscribe to your channel.
Now, there are vendors asking you to review their products. This is one of the biproducts of putting out great content. So, IMHO, you are entitled to reap the benefits that you deserve from giving many viewers a free wood turning education for so many years.
Do the reviews since you won't hear a peep from me other than giving a thumbs up from this end of the inner web.
And I must add that a UA-cam friend named Gary, who turns wood in your vicinity, has also started doing reviews as well. He also provides excellent free videos.
The both of you, through your generosity of time, deserve a lot more than what you receive . I say thank you to you both. The both of you are nice fellow's who give so much to the wood turner community.
Keep those wood shavings flying!
Thank you kindly, J A! 😊 In case you haven't seen it, you can see Gary and I together in this video: ua-cam.com/video/jdlMLWiNO84/v-deo.html
What a stunningly beautiful AND unique piece of art!!! Your work is inspired to see what you see in a blank piece of tree and then create this kind of work. THANK YOU!
Thank you so much, Mike! 😊
Another gorgeous work of art. I see a bird in flight.
Cool! Thanks, Heather! 😊
The perfect video to match my red wine💝🙏🕯
LOL! 😊
Love it, Phil! Always LOVE you and your turning videos. They are always uplifting to me. I think the way you do product reviews is perfect from the labeling of them, to being selective about what products you review, to your honest feedback. I’m not sure why anyone could complain about it. If they don’t want to see a review, then they shouldn’t watch it. Simple, and drama free! Speaking of which, I love how you go with the flow in your wood turnings. You’re definitely a valuable part of my weekly routine. Thank you!
I really appreciate this, Robin, thank you very kindly! 😊
Love this woodturning, Phil. I especially like the gap. That adds a special feature. Glad you had a glove on the turning the outside, I believe it saved your hand from injury. Beautiful grain.
Thank you, Russ! Yes, that glove has save me a few times! 😊
I enjoy watching you take a piece of wood that should go into a wood stove and be burned: And turn it into a beautiful piece of wood art.
Thank you very much, Edward! 😊
That’s a Burl with a lot of personality! Great job Phil!!
Thanks!
Thanks, Kelly! 😊
Beautiful piece. Love the grain and bark. 😊
Thank you! 😊
Your persistence paid off again, Phil. You found a BIG bowl this time and it is beautiful as always.
Regarding your product reviews--I remember watching your review of the Vevor Button Maker. You were like a kid in a combination toy store/candy store! Back in the mid to late 1970's I worked at a Bible Camp and we used a Badge-A-Minit press to make buttons for the campers. I had a great time doing that and I still have buttons that I made for myself.
Your reviews are fun for me to watch because your crazy sense of humor comes through as it does in your turning videos. Keep up the good work!
You are so kind, Crystal, thank you very much! 😊
Thanks to you I look at logs from different angles.
Good to know, Ken, thanks! 😊
WOW, that's a hefty looking bowl! Another amazing piece.
Thank you, Virginia! 😊
Looks great Phil! I think that is the biggest bowl I’ve seen you turn since I started watching a year or two ago. It’s nice to see others struggle as much as I do on roughing out bigger logs. They seem to take forever! Also, I say go for it on your product videos. I think your philosophy on the process is spot on. I’m an avid mountain biker and a young 56 years old so I see the value in getting people outside and moving.
Cool, thanks, JR! 😊
I got to tell you, this is one of my favorites that you've done. I appreciate how you can see in your head how you want it to end up, then plan how to get that done. Almost magic. I am curious sometimes how close the end product is to the way you actually pictured it. This one is one of those. It ended up a master piece.
I do have an idea of what I want to do but the end product often exceeds what I thought it might be. Once in awhile, it disappoints me, too, or rather, I disappoint me. Well, it's all fun getting there! Thank you! 😊
Phil, I always enjoy all of your videos. I too am self taught and have learned a ton from watching your videos, along with many others. Keep doing what you love and we will continue to watch! Awesome burl piece here. Love it. Thanks Phil, for all you share! Be well!!!
Cool, thank you! 😊
Hey Phil, Happy New Year to you and yours. That is just a beautiful piece. One day I would like to find a burl and go to town making a bowl. As you know - Great things take time. Us retired folks have a little bit more "time" in our back pocket to use when needed. Watching your videos, a no brainer, for me. So those who want to unsubscribe because of different content then they don't know what they are missing. All of your videos are first rate! Keep em coming. Have a safe and healthy New Year!!
Thank you kindly, Dave! Happy New Year! 😊
I really enjoy your turnings Phill. You leave as much of the bark and natural parts of the tree as possible. Very nice and a lot of work.
Thank you, Dave! 😊
Man, you have some serious patience!!! The grain in that burl is just killer!!! Great job and I look forward to watching more of your work.
I'm glad you like it, Tom, thank you! Yeah, patience is required on a piece like this. I think that comes with age. I'm about as patient as possible! 😊
As you hone your skills we hone ours. Thank you for educating us.
You are welcome, thank you for watching! 😊
You and Tuffy are an awesome team!
😊
This is one of the few inlays I liked. Nice work Mike.
Awesome! Thank you! 😊
Thank you Phil it is always a pleasure to watch your videos
Glad you like them! Thanks, Michael! 😊
You seldom get pieces so big, but it became marvelous, a real beauty!
Thanks, Erik! 😊
Great project. I'm glad you left the hole in the piece. It really adds character. I also loved the grain, especially the interior grain. It almost looks like the surface of the brain.
Lots of brain comments, Steven! 😊 Thank you!
Phil what ever you do is just grate, don’t change Anything!! You hear us loud and Clear I hope .have a great day.
Loud and clear, John, thank you very much! 😊
Mr. Phil, you're a swell fellow. You go on and do reviews of whatever you want. I probably won't watch them, but that is okay. Right? I love to see your turning and listen to your explanation. It's all so interesting to me, and I have learned a lot. Thanks for everything.
Perfect, Kathryn, thank you! 😊
Don't worry about the heaters, Phil. In the brilliant algorithm of UA-cam interaction is interaction. Just be a duck and let it roll off your back. I will gladly watch and comment on Your content. I don't think I've missed a video since I've subscribed to the channel. Keep it up, sir.
Thanks for that, Archie! 😊
What a whopper of a bowl! Well done! It was obviously quite a mission to turn it.
It sure was, Stephanie! Thank you! 😊
That’s a big bowl. I like all the different things that you see in the bowl as you turn it.
You never know what’s in there waiting to get out.
True enough, Ronnie! 😊
I have never turned at all till 2 years a go I love it ❤ ❤ 😊 😊 😂
It's a great hobby! 😊
This one I recorded and shared with my family. This is one of your best!
Wow, cool, thank you, Robert! 😊
Brilliant bowl gouge bravery becomes beautiful burl bowl, bravo!
Haha, thank you! 😊
Phil, nice work. The burl is excellent eye candy.
Thank you, Matthew! 😊
Once again you have amazed me. That chatoyance is out of this world. Thanks Phil!
You are welcome, Brenda, thanks for watching! 😊
Beautiful bowl!! I saw a dog and a bird. How exciting that you are getting a new bike to share with your family! Enjoy the fruits of your labor!
Thank you so much, Diane! 😊
Thank you Phil, I enjoy all your videos whether it be wood turning or a review. You just keep doing you❤❤
Thank you, Jeanne! 😊
Product sampling is just part of the game. More power to you.
Thanks, Monte! 😊
Love the grain on the inside of this bowl. Gorgeous
Thanks so much 😊
Hi Phil you do what you like I love to see your reviews of some products good you don’t take up everything that comes along. I ll still enjoy what ever you do for a video ❤👍🏻
Thank you, Wendy! 😊
Always love your videos
At 72 years old and I just got back to turning. l learn something new every time I watch them. Sometimes it’s what not to do lol.
Thank you for all your help in showing us your way of turning
Thank you, Randy! 😊
First, as to the product review videos. For me, I will look at (at least) part of a product review. If I find it interesting, I watch all of it. If I don't I give a thumbs up and exit. About 50% of them I do find interesting.
Second, I have never watched one of your turning videos that were not great. This one clearly was a challenge, and it turned out great (as usual).
Between you and Gary. I wait each week for your next surprise. Both of you have health issues, but still there is a video on Thursday (you) and Friday (Gary).
Never stop, we ALL just love it. ;-)
Good to know, Robert, thank you! 😊
I’d describe this piece as colossal. Looks so interesting. I could see myself studying it for hours, enjoying its many features. Great job once again.
Thank you, kindly! 😊
Love this Phil
Beautiful burl/bowl
Thank you, Fred! 😊
❤, enjoy your videos. Watched a lot of Capt. EDDIE!!! GOD BLESS! RICK
Cool, thanks, Rick! 😊
Phil, very nice work up. I turn and enjoyed watching what you are making from a piece of God's handywork. You did an amazing job on it. Thank you so much for sharing your passion.
Thank you, Nelson! 😊
That's a busy beautiful burl bowl! Thank you for putting in all the extra time it took to get this one finished. Mostly what I kept seeing in the bowl was at the bottom on the inside; that ropy loopy look kind of like brains! It looks really neat!
As far as review videos go, I watch the ones that interest me. End of story. Thanks, Phil!
Several comments about brains in this piece, Gwynn! I must put on some glasses to take another look! 😊
Every time you turn off the last bit of tenon I hold my breath, if the nub comes off clean I throw my hands up and shout “Tuffy Marginez!” 🎉
LOL! You made me laugh out loud, Debbie! 😊
Phil: just love this piece, the inclusions, bark, swirls and whirls are such eye candy!
I am today years old when I finally understood what you meant by “clearance”!! 😂
The joys of UA-cam is the watcher is exposed to ideas, products and information from the content providers, so you do you. I do confess that some content providers feature a lot of endorsements but I always keep an open mind. Or just fast forward past what isn’t relevant to me.
I doubt I’ll ever get to do wood turning myself but I sure do enjoy watching you!
Thank you for you kind comment! And, I love your name! Not sure what it means, exactly, but it's amusing all the same! 😊
Love what you had to say Phil. There are so many videos that others are always advertising something. You do amazing work. I've learned a lot from watching your videos.
Thank you, Carroll! 😊
My Ebike is in the garage with my wood lathe. Oh and I am old. LOL (Learned so much from your videos. Thank you)
That is awesome! 😀
I love watching and listening to your explanations of what is happening. I so grateful you have had your health restored because of all the pleasure you bring.
Thank you so much, Rose! 😊
I'd watch any kind of video you want to make. You are laid back and a pleasant voice. Keep turning and reviewing!
So kind of you, thank you! 😊
Phil, you are the best and give me inspiration for those difficult pieces that I see potential, but have no earthly idea how to approach. I'm 59 and started turning when I retired a couple of years ago and am hooked. You were one of the 1st woodturners that I subscribed to and continue to watch your videos EVERY week. Thank you for all the inspiration, laughs and the beautiful work you do. Ignore those that just don't get it. I learn something every time. - Tulsa Oklahoma
Thank you so much, Ladonna! (pretty name!) 😊
Very attractive, Phil: one of my favorite of your pieces. Thanks for persevering!
Thank you, Stevie! 😊
Yours is my favorite turning channel, I like the way you stop the lathe and explain all the steps you take to do the finished project
Awesome, thank you! 😊
I absolutely love it. A pleasure as always.😊
Thank you! Cheers! 😊
Another great work, Phil! I think I see a humming bird in the side of it! Thanks again and keep up the good work! I look forward to your videos!
Cool, thanks, Mike! 😊
Another awesome piece, Phil. Who knows what beauty lurks in the hearts of burls? The ShadowTurner does! 😉
Haha, thank you, Anthony! 😊
Phil you are the only reason I started turning I just hope one day to be as awesome as you are!!
Wow, cool, thank you! I hope you are enjoying the hobby! 😊
Phil please stay true to yourself. I have watched you for years. Love what you do. Your work has always inspired me. Keep being you.
I appreciate that, Arlene, thank you! 😊
You do you. Love your skills. Gather all the abundance you can. I enjoy your videos and I'm a 74 year old knitter who loves handwork.
Good for you, Nancy! Busy hands, happy hands! Thank you! 😊
Isn’t that a wonderful burl, I have to say my heart was in my mouth till the end hoping it stayed put , looked real heavy .
The patterns inside that bowl are gorgeous. Thanks Phil .
Thank you, Bev, I'm so glad you like it! 😊
What an incredible piece of wood, and an incredible bowl. Great work, Phil!
😊
What a beautiful work of art!!! You NEVER disappoint Mr Phil!!! Thank you for sharing your art with us!!!
My pleasure, Jonathan, thanks for watching! 😊
I’m old too. Do whatever reviews you want. If someone doesn’t like it, too bad for them!
Cheers
Haha, thanks, Tom! 😊
I like it Phil! I know it was a lot of work, but be proud. It's a beauty.
Thank you, Rick! 😊
A great result, Phil. Elm has been almost wiped out in Europe since Dutch Elm disease. They are beautiful trees in life, and so is the wood when turned, and used by carpenters.
I've heard that, Richard. Too bad. 😊
We like who you are and what you do. If you keep doing what you like we will be happy. Just remember it’s who you are that’s most important.
Thank you, Robert! 😊
Wow,, that's a pretty hunk of wood! IT'S just Beautiful ❤️
I think so too! Thank you, Diane! 😊
Thank you Colin, thank you Phil. 27:35: Face with beard looking from left to right. Obvious hummingbird on the outside. Can’t go wrong with burl.
So many folks see so many things I just didn't see the first time around, Valerie. Thank you! 😊
So much character, it’s stunning. Thanks
Thank you, Darlene! 😊
It only took a few seconds of my "auto feed" for your latest video for me to make sure I click like & comment. Love your projects, and the gnarly burls! 😂
Very cool, Danielle, thank you! 😊
