Just a note to anyone who might want to try this, you should know that bowling pins often have a significant void in the base. I've dismantled many of them in my hobby and you typically see a couple holes about 30mm drilled thru the inner layers. If you were turning a pin and hit one of those holes, a very nasty accident could result.
That was fun to watch! The hat is adorable, it all is! Using the original paint for his collar really brings it together. Shows his origin. I will always think of this snowman when I see a bowling pin! Well done!
Man that is incredible! If I ever came across something like that I would 💯% buy it. That would be one of those things you look forward to getting out at Christman and enjoy looking at.
Used to live near Corry, Pennsylvania. It had a bowling pin factory. You could get a pickup full of seconds blanks and scraps for a buck or two. They were loaded by a conveyor belt. It was all maple I believe and burnt real well in the old coal furnace and fireplace. This was in the 50s and 60s.
Looks like a Snoguin to me, awesome work Harry. About 50 years ago I had a bowling ball, took off the plastic coating and made a table lamp out of it, then I got married, never seen it since. Cheers and seasons greetings.
It is humbling to see such a beautiful piece created from something so common. Seeing your work on this is going to get me in trouble spending time to do try some things like it. Beatiful work and bearifully done!!!
I actually have a box of bowling pins up in the attic, they've been there at least 15 years...I now know what to do with them. I just need to learn to turn first... Great video!
@@HarrySmithWoodturning I thought it looked like a great snowman, I hope no one said otherwise. That you turned it out of a bowling pin just adds to its character. Приятно смотреть на профессиональную работу! Это действительно точение и качественная работа рещцом, а не скобление, как у множества псевдотокарей. Браво! 🇷🇺
I remember when I was a kid my uncle worked at Brunswick and would bring home damaged bowling pins and bowling lane wood by the truckload to burn in their furnace to heat their house on the farm…I’ll bet someone would love to have some of the wood he use to burn….
As the inflated troll master for the snowman society, it's clearly a snowman. Beautiful work, Harry, as always. Merry Christmas to all, even the silly folks that think it's a penguin.
UA-cam keeps freezing up on me so this is a attempt #4 to try to write a comment. (Oy.) This is cute Harry, but I’ve liked other things you’ve done a whole lot more. I knew from the point that you were putting in “buttons“ it was a snowman. Have you ever seen buttons on a penguin. I haven’t. One could put a top hat on a snowman. Have you ever seen a top hat on a penguin? I haven’t.

Do you think this finished piece looks more like s snowman, or a penguin in a top hat? 😂😁 Merry Christmas!
🐧
Penguin
Both, either and or Harry! Happy Christmas ☃️
A very cute penguin! Hope that was what you were shooting for! 🤣
Beautiful penguin, but take the collar off.
I would often watch my grandfather carving bowling pins into candlesticks on his lathe almost 60 years ago. Thanks for the memories!

@@williamkeene9032 Man, I don't think so. I lived outside of Titusville at that time. And that was back in the sixties. No longerin the area.

I actually never knew either and I’m mind blown lol
@@stellamaggard3669 Magic
No, it's why they make the sound that they do.
It never occurred to me either. I thought they’d be some form of dense plastic in a polymer shell.

I would say lose the plastic ring, add a corncob pipe and a silk band to the hat and it is a snowman.
When we used bowling pins in my High School class we had to saw off about 1 1/2 inches of the base to make a flat, solid surface for the spindle.
Curious question abotu a technique in the video, what is the significance of the wood shavings @ 13:09
Well done :o)
