I love how every 5 years or so, a really obscure dc or marvel character just decides to singlehandedly destroy the entire universe for a completely bonkers reason.

Agreed although he isn’t a dc or marvel character, he is a dark horse character. Along with characters like the umbrella academy and kick-ass (I believe)

As a viewer who grew up with the life action movie.
Watching this is like watching Tom and Jerry suddenly go all Itchy and Scratchy on each other.

Please continue to do videos on comics like this that have been "lost to time." Everyone and their mother does DC and Marvel, but digging deep for stories that haven't gotten the same shine as a Batman or Avengers would be great!

It's kind of crazy there was a children's animated series inspired by this. The 90's were a wild time to be alive. Hearing about this makes me want an R-rated adaptation of the Mask. It sounds like it would make for a pretty unique horror-comedy flick.
I'm also noticing there's some interesting similarities between the Mask and the Venom symbiote in how they affect the wearer's personality and causing them to become addicted.
Same with Toxic Avenger. Can't believe they made a kids TV show 😂

The Venom symbiote under DeFalco and Michelinie is more of an enhancer than a corrupter. On its own , it just wants to get along with its host.
The Mask ? Yeah, totally an emotional parasite that feeds off violent impulses in the comics.

The "A Tommy Gun" is done by Detective Halloway when he wore it. Most of the good guy stuff the mask did was done by Halloway in the comic.
He was a cruel anti-hero at best, it was more like Ash Williams for much of Army of Darkness: Good? Bad? I'm the guy with the gun!

The stoner kid was the safest mask user. I don't remember the reason why or if it was ever even explained at all, that the mask basically had no effect on him, it just made him trip out bad.

This would actually work as a good horror dark comedy drama. Blumhouse would do wonders with this.
It might work as a good horror dark comedy drama, like someone finding the mask and becomes a dark anti-hero with a twisted sense of humour and get revenge on those who tormented them with gruesome, but over the top and cartoonish ways, while protecting innocent people from real threats as well, like criminals who might want the mask for more evil purposes, while the owner and wearer of the mask tries to use the power of the mask for good, but has to struggle with his desires of personal wants and needs when wearing it.

The Jim Carry Movie made me discover this infamous comic when I was younger, but there were little to no clear information about it, this is a welcomed surprise Rob, I'd love if you turned this into a series!

Bullying should never be a necessity. It breaks down and destroys proper social behavior in kids. Many negative emotions can begin to build up due bullying.
Personally I think kids should get bullied a little bit to show that they won't get always liked but the bully should face consequences. For there actions this might seem fucked up but that's what I think

@@yellowpower3755 🤔 that would be good. I guess the mask would win either way cuz of his mystical nature vs a symbiotes physical prowess. Unless the symbiotes could remove the mask. To tell you the truth I hate what the symbiotes have become. Their powers are too expansive and I hate the idea of knull. But the art is amazing.
Adrian Lujan Im not quite sure of that myself. The Mask has a fairly large chance of winning even if it is against someone like Carnage. But then again, you never know with a symbiote..... plus, there is also the fact that Walter exists. And his only powers, if you can call them that, are his absurd durability and pretty much complete emotionlessness. Venom and Carnage could probably maybeeeee.....? sort of be like that for him? Having the durability and all. After all, Carnage has some insane feats and Venom has fought the likes of Hulk and Juggernaut before. Also what exactly is it you don’t like about Knull? Just curious.
@@yellowpower3755 I guess I get the concept. But one thing I get tired of in comics, is there is always some greater power that's been there since the beginning and some ancient evil that totally upsets the galctic hierarchy. I liked the symbiotes just being an alien race and I think it was fine there. It's just crazy convoluted, and venom is captain universe blah blah blah. But that is the nature of comics. The same characters would get stale so you would need fresh takes and expansion. But for me I guess I like smaller, tighter stories instead of everything always having to span the universe and all the rules you knew before mean nothing....again lol.
One thing I always find both interesting and terrifying about the comic Mask is that the reality warping/cartoon logic powers only apply to person wearing it and not those around them. In the movie version or cartoons the Mask could do things like spin someone at high speeds to change their clothes and they're perfectly fine but if the comic version did it then that person would most likely get injured or killed. The muffler scene in the movies is more played for laughs as the cartoon logic means the mechanics didn't die but in the comics because they don't have the same cartoon logic they just die when a muffle is jammed down their throat.
Something rather scary about the idea of this entity that doesn't abide by the usual laws of physics and just does whatever the hell it wants without fear of being hurt but those around them still can.
Dno if you will remember but I thought that about when the theif flushed himself into that military complex with a portal opened up.... Do they explain the portal at some point.. It's irrelevant now but damn it interesting

There are to many people in the dc universe that can resist the the mask but still use its power there are so many hacks think green latern for example unbendable will can probably resist it or john constatine can use some magic i mean he fights demon lords amd gods regularly so a essentially magical artifact shouldnt be a big problem in marvel deadpool could probably wear it too because good luck taking over a mind like that

I wonder what the Mask's peak power is. He's extremely durable, reality warping with his creating guns from nothing, shape shifting, and more? With a more creative and disciplined mind, I wonder what it could do.
Considering that the Mask pretty much makes you completely chaotic having a creative or discipled mind doesn't mean a thing since the discipline is out the window once the mask is on.

I like how he talks about how bullying was seen as a necessity based on who you asked but later on said “you don’t change if you don’t have any consequences”... so you mean bullies should be punished? Bullies were never a good thing and it’s fucked up to think otherwise, if you let a bully be a bully they’re going to grow up and potentially be an asshole, that’s not okay

The difference between the movies and the comic is that in the comic, the mask is the only thing abiding by cartoon rules, while the movie has everything become cartoon in the moment, and real when it's over

I'm a millennial so I didn't fully experienced that times where bullying was considered a necessity but it's obviously a faulty perception, wide spread bullying like the one depicted in the comics is much more likely to incentive coping and shutdown mechanisms, if the kid already had the to stand up for themselves at home for good or bad motives then she will say something or start a fight but it's not like you start getting self confident and open minded if everyone starts bullying you.

Thank you for covering this! I discovered the mask comics when I was young and the movie was coming out. There's just something about the idea of putting on a mask and becoming a living cartoon character, impervious to harm, seeking revenge on those who've wronged you that appeals to people. Probably not everyone, but definitely me. I hope this video helps steer more people toward the old comics, they are a lot of fun!

The movie is very much a "What if?" version of the comic. The major story beats are there but Stanley is changed from a cold, gun obsessed psychopath into a kind hearted, cartoon obsessed nice guy.
As much as I love the movie it would be awesome to see a more faithfull adaptation of the comic, perhaps as an animated film?
This is probably one of my favorite comics of all time next to invincible outside of marvel and dc
