recently i watched the reaction of this song by, someone (curses upon me but i cant remember the channel name, something penta....). And he had a very interesting take about this clip i really liked.

Largely because European cultures are in steep decline, by design, groups like Heilung (exploring ancient proto-Germanic customs) are very popular. It is almost like one last Thing before our peoples and cultures are devoured by Globalism
As a native American (navajo) I feel like a deep, deep connection with the beat, the way she sings, everything about this song and Heilung.. like it draws out an old, old, old soul inside.. makes me feel so good. 🤗
I´m german and somewhat proud that the Band consists also of germans next to other members from all over Europe. But I also love the Indian sounds, they trigger the same emotions inside of me.

I'm Scottish and know that Vikings and Celts sailed to America, long before the assholes who created religion. look at some native tribes and they look Asian, speak with similar tones, lilts etc. America was mixing races long before Columbus. people are just too stupid to understand that Europeans were in America hundreds of years before, what they are taught.

Hi: The lyrics for this piece are mainly taken from bracteates: golden, circular coins or amulets found in Northern Europe that date from the 4th to 7th centuries CE. They are often fitted with a decorated rim and loop, which indicates that they were meant to be worn and perhaps provide protection, fulfil wishes or for divination.
The bracteates feature a very significant iconography influenced by Roman coinage. They were predominantly made from Roman gold, which was given to the North Germanic peoples as peace money.
In Anoana, the listener has the chance to delve into a collection of likely encoded spells from the Migration Period and get a touch of magic from the Dark Ages.
The intention of the piece is to playfully reconnect to an incantational language of a period where the North was richer in gold than any other region. Our forefathers presumably enjoyed a time of great prosperity and it may make us rethink how dark these ages real
Above the sign on the womb of the giving birth mother is probably a painted version of Ægirs Hjelm/Aegishjalmur/Ægishjálmr ("Ægir's Helmet"), which is a symbol described in the Poetic Edda as a symbol of ultimate protection, physical, mental and spiritual referred to as protection against all kinds of fear "Ægir/Ægi" means "Sea" in both dialects of Old Norse and is also the name of the personification of the sea. "Ægir's Gate", describes the eddies that drag ships to the bottom of the sea. Ægir / Ægi has often been described as an old man with a long white beard, and to see him standing still in the water was a bad omen, as he surfaced to drag people and ships to the bottom of the ocean. Ægirs Hjelm is described in the Poetic Edda in a stanza with a shape-shifting dragon, Fafner, whose blood is poisonous. The language is proto-norse. The language that the people living in scandinavia during the migration periode spoke in.Pre-viking era. The only words of Anoana's handwriting that are known with certainty is Landawariar (Protector of the land)
About the Heilung costumes we can affirm the following: Kai Uwe Faust's tunic includes elements of the original peoples of Eurasia from the Stone Age to the end of the Iron Age; the helmet is based on a historical model from about 9000 years ago. Maria Franz's dress takes various types of Viking attire, being added by the singer several ornamental strips of the mane of a white horse. Her headdress is Siberian. Christopher Juu, meanwhile, wears historically correct Viking clothing.
In fact, Aegir's helmet... I hadn't looked properly and described the symbol as a Vegvisir... I apologize for the mistake...
I wish more of the Neo-pagans and those obsessed with Vikings would delve into our migration period. Was such a wonderful piece of our history that I find much more interesting than the Viking Age. I also enjoy the history of the Vendel Period.

If nobody else has said it, she is doing a herd call. It's called "Kulning", and is still part of some traditions in (rural) Scandinavia, mostly Sweden!
Also in Scandinavia we have many scary children's stories and lullabies. The one I can remember most from a young age is called "mors sang få hansemand". It's really common to children to be told darker, more realistic stories for us!

I've listened to this song at least a 100 times already. I don't really understand why, but still after over 100 times of listening to it, the song continues to give my chills and feel so much overwhelming emotion I'll tear up or even full on cry. They've definitely tapped into something very special.

Dark lullabies were quite common in eras with high child mortality, generally in a sort of propitiation of whatever dark spirits wanted to steal the life of your child (that they will be entertained by your song and forget about the child).
In ancient Finnish folklore, when a person sleeps, depending on the are you were from, it was believed that you died for the duration of your slumber and your soul would leave through your mouth in the form of a bee (If a person died, they would leave through the mouth as a butterfly, a white fly or as a small bird) and sometimes travel to the land of the dead, or the Beyond.
When a mother or a maid servant tried to lull a baby to sleep, they often invited or wished for a little death to the baby, so as they could themselves could sleep (being a father of a child with colic, I can understand the sentiment). The lullabies often hold portents of death in them so that dreams could easily find the baby. And if the baby never woke up again, they could explain that the baby's souls was lost in the land of the dead and simply hope, that a dead relative would find the baby's soul and take care of it.

I struggle with chronic anxiety and every time I listen to Heilung or Maria’s voice it’s just so relaxing and helps me to be grounded.
I also recommend having a look at "Between the Sheets" with Will Friedel. He struggled with Anxiety too, and talks about how he lives and functions as an actor with it.
This song helped me sleep during some rotten weeks in the recent past. 🥰

I too struggle with anxiety (social) and never thought about using Heilung to ease it. It might be worth a try for me. Doctors just want to throw more and more chemicals at it. 😔

I just saw Wardruna perform live in the woods the other day. I hope now to catch Heilung there some day soon.
It's interesting to me, how this type of primal folk has a similar appeal as certain kinds of (particularly black) metal, and draws the same kind of crowds. In both cases it's music that isn't just heard, but felt. There's nothing wrong with a beat you can dance to, but some music speaks to something deeper and more ancient in our psyche.
Absolutely. Einar Selvik from Wardruna was himself the drummer on one of the Gorgoroth albums back in the day. This very much speaks to the same part of me that black metal does. Reverence for nature, acknowledgement of the hardship, cultivation of strength of heart. I couldn't be without this stuff
I seen Heilung at the beginning of 2020 and it was the most emotionally moving show I've been to.
I have a chance to see them again in September....but I could also wait and see Wardruna in October. I don't think I can afford both. I'm so conflicted

That was absolutely true for me. I was invited to a Heilung concert by my brother. I had never heard of them so listened on UA-cam before and didn’t really like it, then I went to experience them live and it touched me deep and awakened something old inside me. If you can get to a live Heilung ceremony, please go! They are incredible. Now I enjoy listening to their songs, they empower me ❤

Anoana is a masterpiece of the Genre. Every time i hear this song i feel my mind transported to another world in a way i cannot describe. All of Heilungs' music does this to me but this song especially melts away the modern world and brings me to a time and place long forgotten, where mortals and Gods walked side by side, trees could sing and animals held a kinship to humans and humans to all things in an unspoken balance and understanding. For that Heilung has my undying devotion to their music and when my time comes, i home their music is one of the last i hear before my final breath joins with my ancestors.
I soo much was waiting for your reaction to this. Can I just add som points that are important in seeing this? The most important being that the child is born under an eclipse 0:56 (seen in background several times). According to previking believs they had very special gifts: hamnskifte (= the ability to change appearance), age shift, talking to animals, and healing as in when she heals the bird. The previking time and it's religion in nordic countries is much more female directed than the religion in the later years (viking gods like Tor and Oden with all the everpresent masculinity... ) The language they use is only partially known and therefore reconstructed

Most probably as a "cultural answer" from the shift from 'Shamanism' (which generally is, and always has been more female-oriented, or at the very least much more balanced) towards the more aggressive "masculine" 'Warrior-ethos' that was established during, or perhaps right before the Viking-age.
there were female seers during the so called viking age too so women had still great importance in their spiritual world.

I can't stop listening to this song! It's so gorgeous. I recognized the kulning when Maria made that sound at the end of her herding calls--"yaAH!" Like casting away the sound where she wants it to land on the landscape in the distance. Cool technique, it was so gracefully interwoven with this song! I also heard a bird calling and flying away with the "BAH-BAH-bah-bah" shortly before Anoana is about to "die." So many ancient techniques layered as one sound experience!! The lullaby too, amazing transition. As a pregnant woman, I feel such feminine and maternal energy in this song but also the masculine involvement. I almost want to call it a yin-yang dance, with Anoana as the child born of this. Such a primal energy of life. They use nature to make sound.
I don't know why but every time I'm listening to Heilung, my body bursts into tears without any explanations... As if I'm bearing the tragic loss of something, as if something marvellous and vital was coming to an end.
I don't know if it is the decline of Europe as we know it, the fact that our astounding civilisations are coming to an end without any of us wishing for it at all but I feel a deep loss beyond the vibrations of music itself calling me to keep the fire burning, not letting it turning to ashes.

Its not a tragic loss I'm feeling that i become overcome with. It's a type of feeling like I'm headed out on an adventure where the destination is unknown and really unimportant. The journey itself is what I'm inspired with. I feel like my soul is syncing with the music and talking to a piece of buried so deep that most times I'm unaware of its existence.
I'm just going to reply to that statement about "the decline of Europe" with Heilung's own opening ceremony: "Remember that we all are brothers..."

I love Heilung. They do something truly unique and inspired by ancient history. Thoroughly looking forward to this.
The concert at Red Rocks was amazing. Even when the speakers failed, and the band kept going (assuming their monitors were still working) so you could see them moving and hearing all the percussion without the vocals. The audience was right there with them and celebrating rather than getting upset that audio issues occurred. When the speakers kicked back in, the crowd went crazy.

At this video's 18:25 - the male vocals sounded to me like a heartbeat, which timed perfectly with the mother singing to the baby and Anoana giving the bird its heartbeat again.

Me, too. My mother taught me why we have jack o' lanterns and the ways to banish evil spirits; I've always felt something so old and strong about the odd superstitions and threads of magic that have followed us down through all these ages. The song and the video call to me somehow.
As an Alaska Native, seeing the dress and drums, this really hits hard. Amazing vocal work, beats, all of the instruments. Even the breathing can be felt, in a good, calming way. This is one of the best things I've ever heard, and I have all of the albums they made. The video is equally as stunning. It's been over a year, and I can't wait for what they come up with for their next video.
For me it feels like the girl is the human-born spirit of nature, the way she cares about the animals and plants... I also feel like in the end when she's older her 'old friend' looks very grey and old, so maybe he's at the end of his life and she's helping him cross over... I'm going to my second Heilung ritual this fall, and I absolutely can NOT wait. Watching a ritual live is the most cathartic experience. It really speaks to your tribal ancestry, and what life was like before modern conveniences sped up and cheapened our day to day experiences.

Heilung has really helped people wake up to their tribal ancestry, and ignited curiosity in Northern Europeans, and those of Northern European descent to where they actually came from.

Lyfjaberg is one that centers me. Can't speak a lick of any North German language, but something about it is so calming. Had to listen to it before conducting my first interview not to long ago
I am so excited to see them live again. Im also excited for the Hellblade 2: Senua's Saga because theyre doing the soundtrack for the game and the first trailer for the game had In Madjan remixed with Senua singing along.

When Elizabeth mentioned the chanting being produced in a way that makes it sound like it's coming from inside your own head I immediately thought of Senua's Sacrifice. Some of the best sound design in a game ever

Gorgeous song by a truly fantastic group. Speaking of beautiful and primal: I'd love to hear your take on *Sólstafir - Fjara* . A band from Iceland with a very unique, hard to pin down and varied sound. The official video for that song is also beautifully done.

Sorry I just cringe every time I hear phrases like "amplified history". It just smacks too closely of "alternative facts." Draping history in false fabrics, that color the public understanding of actual events, with "dramatic recreations" and "based on true events." Love or hate their music, I really wish they didn't promote that kind of gobbledygook woo-speak. But, they seem to be genuine pagans, not just a performance, so woo-speak is to be expected.
I do like most of their sound though. Reminds me a LOT of Dead Can Dance. Especially the female vocalist sounding like Lisa Gerard. Wish the guys wouldn't sing though, they kill the vibe for me that she sets up.

@@happyninja42 They're just using North Germanic and Scandinavian history as an influence for modern folk music, though. They're not claiming "this is what ancient music sounded like," or "these spells actually work," or any of that nonsense. Just using ancient writing for lyrics or lyrical inspiration and turning it into their own thing. They're pretty clear that they're just drawing on what we actually know instead of claiming to reproduce any history. They're storytellers, not alternative historians.

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Heilung in concert and all of this imagery and sound is conveyed in their live performances as well. They are the best to ever do it- the ability to transcend time and space and stir emotions in all of us that have been repressed and also bring such rich history to the masses. There isn’t enough praise in the world to commend them for their craft.
Anything Maria Franz does is going to be fantastic.

I listen to Heilung with my eyes closed , almost in a meditate state, absolutely love they're music, evokes something within me that I can't truly put into words. Something very deep within my soul is woken and I can't explain it.
I find I get that same almost spiritual uplifting feeling with a lot of celtic and germanic/norse inspired music. Probably harkens back to some cultural memory in the genetics haha.

Did you notice that the baby has horn nubs and that Aonana was born under an eclipse and merged with her totem animal after another eclipse? Yes, she brought a dead bird to life too.
When I first saw this video, I said that if music videos were up for a cinematography award, this would win it, hands down.
When I saw they released a new song I instantly clicked on the video. Just like you in the first seconds when she does that “inhale vocal” I stopped the video, went to the living room where I have a great hifi setup, so I could listen and FEEL the music … I felt almost compelled to join the singing, that’s how powerful their music is.
My favourite Heilung song yet. Playing it on repeat together with some Wardruna and A Tergo Lupi's 'Kominn Heim', mixed with 'Gwydion' by Faun featuring Eluveitie and Eluveitie's 'Aidus' for a bit of variety.

I love how you indeed mention the production; it is done extremely good! Listening to this song, eyes closed, with (the same Beyer 1990) headphones really touches me and often leaves me in tears. Am European and almost feels as if this song was made by my ancestors a few millennia ago. Never written down so seemingly forgotten, but somehow it has endured in the soul or DNA and lives on.

I love Heilung. This has to be my favorite song by them. The storytelling is nothing short of amazing. It gives you chills, but this song puts you at ease at the same time.

In the video description, Christopher notes it was a "quieter" mix and not particularly a lower frequency. This allows the compression to bring up the transitives and lower frequencies. It's not particularly recorded at "lower frequencies." It's a small but very important distinction to make with regards to audio processing/recording.
@@Koulnis It basically means they didn't brickwall the sound, so you actually have loud and quiet parts instead of everything being uniformly loud.

Vargtimmen is truly a great song...but if you want more layers in vocal technique, maybe "Tuuli" or "Räven", from the same album of "Vargtimmen" ("Trä", which means "tree" but is also very similar to the Swedish word for "three") maybe are a bit more interesting... "Tuuli" has some Jouki in it, and "Räven" has that which in Inuit culture is called "love song", I don't know if it's a thing also in Sami culture, but it's fascinating

Heilung is so incredible, there's a slightly different direction of production on this song, which lends them to being able to do some interesting things with the instruments and vocals, as well as the space & atmosphere of the sounds. Looking forward to the new album for sure and would love to see them live one day!
I listened to this song alot on my mini trip to Northumberland (UK). Now everytime I listen to it, it takes me back to driving around Northumberland and visiting Lindisfarne
The scene of the bonfire eclipse dancing is just stunning. I got very emotional watching this video for the first time.
I mostly listen to metal in its every form. But I love this kind of music as much as I love nature. The low and slow drum beat calms my heart like walking in the forest or listening to the waves. It's like the mother Earth's heartbeat. ❤

My mum used to sing me Dacw Nghariad (were Welsh) which I love but only realised later its a song about a bard sitting down to die and going through his memories of his far away bride. Odd subject for a lullaby but I loved it.

Not only have I discovered amazing music like Heilung since finding your channel but I have also begun to have a much deeper appreciation and enjoyment of these songs after listening to your analysis. I am so glad you got to break this down and enjoy the shamanic nature of this song. I fell in love with this group after I discovered their music through recommendations. I had been listening to Skáld and Wardruna, but Maria, Chris and Kai have done a phenomenal job in drawing music from the ancient sources. The ritual dance on a lunar eclipse was a breathtaking scene that I would have loved to be a part of. So stoked for the release of this album!

There's no "cliff hanger" to the end. She goes out right where she came in. Watch the last minute again and then immediately watch the first minute. That gasp at the beginning is the sound of someone waking from the dead, a gasp of air in the blink of an eye as one life ends and another begins. She is born into different forms as needed under the eclipse to restore order and balance.
After hearing it really 111 times, I started to cry. My soul relieved all it's pain to the outside.

I think Florence Welch has a similar effect at least on me and her early music had some traditional british/celtic music vibe
I always get the feeling that the bison? was a protector/guardian and source of comfort when Anoana was young and because she can restore life (bird), she could help end it also. I feel that the bison appears old and grey, and maybe this is Anoana's way of ending its suffering in a noble and naturalistic way. By offering a noble battle to end a noble creature, to give it the grand ending it deserves. She is a woodland creature so its hoped that she is not so easily injured by human standards, I hope she survived x
It's a musk-ox. To me, it seems more like Anoana as a grown woman (with special gifts, hence being born under a full moon) merges with the musk-ox, after being ignored by the deer in the woods when she was a child. She wasn't ready yet - or it wasn't meant to be about her and the deer. So maybe she was meant to shape shift, or become one with nature (a spirit, a witch?). The word "Landawariar" is the only word in the song with a known meaning - "protector of the land". Just my take on it - no one knows for sure I guess 😊

We have witnessed the life story of Anoana, a shaman of her people and a nature spirit. But way beyond that the metaphor is that we, the people, Anoana and her likes make these lands! The words are cryptic, nonsensical and spell-like as to be expected from any Shaman worth his/her salt. She is born into and grew up with love; her mother's and her tribe's love for her and her love for the nature, the spirits and the future. She is grown into a powerful soul, not cowering in the face of the unknown and taking death, danger and risk head-on, even unto her own ending! That is how we make these lands. Through love, care, courage, resilliance and self-sacrifice. Anoana laughs at danger as we do. She understands that death is but another part of living and she is not afraid. Such inspiring and beautiful nerrative with such rich music. I simply love love love Heilung. This is music for the darkest, must deeply buried parts of souls! I have been concerned for quite some time that Loreena McKennitt is the last true bard of our time, but Heilung proved me wrong. An altogether different tone and style but to no lesser effect! This is tribal music that is way up above cheesy percussions like a badly contrieved tourist attraction that we have endured for quite some time. You have my heart-felt gratitude Heilung! Maria has such a diverse vocals. This song sounds so different that I first wondered if she actually sang or if it was another singer. She returns to her more familiar vocals in the newly released “Asja” and cannot wait for Elizabeth to review that. Both songs I have taken a great liking to their new album

During Faust's verse, they set up young "Anoana" wanting to buck with the ox in the forest so I feel that the final shots there are that culmination. She's able to buck with the ox and has her place anomg the animals.

@@maryeckel9682 No I don't imagine she died. She was finally able to buck with the ox. They don't kill each other when they do that, it's like when cats "fight". Over the video you see that shot of her wanting to buck and the ox refused, then over the video she grows, at one point is laying on the ox's back stroking it's hair, and by the end of the video, she's part of the herd and strong enough to participate. I could very well be wrong but that's how I saw it anyway. Beautiful, beautiful video though and a wonderful song ❤️

Thank you for such an amazing, informative analysis. Anoana is a song I could listen to on repeat for hours! Their music resonates so deeply within my soul that I feel the most primitive spiritual awakening. I truly can't articulate it. Seeing them live increased my love for and connection to their music exponentially. I was awestruck. I listen to Heilung nearly every day and the feelings & energy evoked are ever-growing. I can't get enough. No other music has moved me this way. They speak (or sing and play) to my heart, mind, and soul. They force my broken body to move in ways that DO feel healing!
