Allegedly, witches of Olde believed hair was a source of magick -- particularly their own. So the use of hair in Bayonetta's design (extensively, might I add) is actually quite fitting in my opinion.
"Madama Butterfly takes her name from the title character of an opera by Giacomo Puccini. Butterfly (also known as Cio-Cio-san) was a Japanese girl who fell in love with an American serviceman, who married her for convenience with the intention of leaving her once he found a proper American wife. Butterfly would have a child by him and wait three years for his return, only to see him arrive with his new wife, who had agreed with him to raise Butterfly's child as their own. Heartbroken, Butterfly agreed to give up the child to the couple before taking her own life by means of using her father's knife to commit jigai, a female form of seppuku, to preserve her honor." According to the Bayonetta Wiki. bayonetta.wikia.com/wiki/Madama_Butterfly I don't know how true either is unless Kamiya said it himself.
I think the fact of Balder bringing young Cereza to the present, is the fact that Cereza, was imprisoned and an outcast. She couldn't grow like a normal witch, so having a role model (present Bayonetta) she grew confident. That's why Jeanne was always like ''The fear is still in your eyes''. And we see how young Cereza starts to imitate Bayonetta, and the last speak Bayo gives to Cereza in her bedroom telling her how strong she is, could've made the timeline change (or at least, Bayonetta's personality) as we see the scene ''I'm not afraid anymore, mummy. There is nothing i can not do'' awakening the Left Eye, and that's how Balder can finally summon Jubileus. Or at least, that's how i interpreted it. It's true, the story has some issues, but is only on the pacing factor. I think the story overall is pretty good, just it wasn't told the best way. Also, such a great video. I can see all the effort and days of editing and research you spent on the making of this video. I'm not used to give ''Likes'' to videos, but this truly deserves it. Amazing work.
I know I’m late but Bayonetta awakened the left eye since she altered time and Jeanne ended up not sealing her memories since like you said, she was not afraid anymore.Well, her Umbran watch saved her since she always kept it close to her heart and Jeanne hit her watch.
Bayonetta has got to be one of my favourite female character designs, in any video game and even just pop culture overall, not just because she is attractive either. There are many attractive females that are easy on the eyes in games, but her design is just so elegant and sleek, her long legs make her look almost like a runway model, especially with those outfits she wears, it makes her stand out from the rest. She is one of the most recognizable characters ever created, a very iconic and distinct design, not just as a female, but as a character design in general. In fact she very easily passes, a character silhouette test. Her artist did phenomenal work creating her look that's for sure, a lot of effort went into her creation and it shows. She's a one of kind
BAYO reminds me of a friend from HS. One of those flirty, alternative-girls who liked her drugs. The comparison is far closer with the Bayo2 design. Feels like the witch version of them. Lol
this entire vidoe can for me be conveyed in one sentence: "WOW, it's as if letting your creators do what they like to do and do best instead of pumping out easy cash grabs is a good idea! *WHO KNEW!?* "
@@sirapple2406 If your income depends in it, it is wrong. See it this way: The budget that went into developing this could have gone to a more popular game. That is called substitution costs. Personally, I love the games. Some of the best I ever played, but looked through the publishers lense, the income is important. Most important.
you can't let the scale tip too much to one side. Too much power to a creator and he might keep piling shit up, suffocating the project and resulting in things becoming unfinished. Too much power to management and the project may be cut short to fit a specific release window, or it may turn into a byproduct of trends. You need a balance of those two aspects for it to work out the best way possible
Bayonetta's sexiness feels like it's part of her character and it isn't done in a lecherous or distasteful way, she feels like a confident, independent and badass woman who just happens to be sexy, and a lot of that probably comes from the fact that she was designed by a woman.
It's not devil may cry's competition, it's dmc's heir. This witch matches lore well. I feel it's not sexist because she gives off a feel that she refuses to be restrained. She seems like the kind of woman who will kill you if you try to make her dress proper
"Kamiya was so stubborn, that even after the higher-ups relented he proceeded to not only keep Bayonetta's glasses, but also to put glasses on every single character in the game." --- Hideki Kamiya, a true embodiment of a paragon! (Fuckin' good bit, lol) What a history this game had, god damn! I love the seeing the improvement to your videos been making over the years, Fox. The intro, and title card are pretty top-tier editing, also amount of research you put into this project is impeccably sexy! ;) In the middle of making a video myself, and hopefully, it can be nearly as good as this! But most of all, I hope can be one of your peers one day. Keep up the great work, Fox! And have a great day! ;D
I think those glasses also greatly improved her design because they are so grounded. Bayonetta has a very outlandish design and she could have very easily come across as like a vague entity. The glasses serve as a reminder that "no, she is still a woman and not some spirit".
@@WednesdayMan it's not that. It's the fan base complained about Bayonetta being OP. The smash bros team nerfed her. People always have something to complain about. Every character can be OP with the right player. I'm a Bayonetta main and I agree Nintendo Nerfed Bayonetta way too much. Her movements feels super clunky. She doesn't flow at all. 🙄😪🤔
Also I like the path that it took for her "hair down form" to be incorporated into the game. In normal gameplay it looked bad because it blocked sight from what she was doing, but in the final game she only uses it against giant bosses that force the camera to pull back away from her and all her attacks cause wicked weaves. In these situations your sight is drawn more to the boss than Bayo, so it makes sense.
Imo Bayonetta is sexy female characters done right. She owns her sexuality and the cutscenes are appropriate in terms of like- what they’re conveying. There’s no butt-shots during her interactions with Cereza for example, which is good because it’s an adorable scene with a child. Sexy but not Over-sexualised. It’s not like Mass Effect for example where female characters (especially Miranda bless her) were ‘shown off’ in the most out of place moments just for the sake of it. It felt creepy. I say this as a feminist and a huge lesbian.
Thanks!! I felt the same way, and think it's absurd to call it sexist within the context of the actual game but I thought it was still a topic worth addressing.
A large part about feminism is that women must be in control of their sexuality, and whenever the man is in control of it is when abuse happens. An unequal part of being a woman is not being able to show sexuality without being abused or objectivized, while men can go around shirtless and show open masculinity without having this happen to them (with counted exceptions). Real feminists claim that women have been oppressed by their own sex, it being seen as a bad thing in society: a source of both physical and mental weakness that will only attract abuse. This is what they want to change. Real feminists fight against the abuse that stems from not being able to be in control, which is why they sometimes march topless and support sex workers. So yeah, *Bayonetta IS a feminist power fantasy*, as she imposes her femininity and knowingly uses it as a source of mental and physical strength. This is on her core. She fights angels because historically the catholic church has pushed towards the repression of femininity. She's intelligent and in control of her movements. A large part of her arc is her accepting little Cerezita (a representation of her interior weakness, so shes not a mary sue, and maternity) and embracing the motherly side of feminity she once rejected. Being a mother is something that has been used to repress feminity too, after all, pushing the idea that its women's role to preserve the human race by bearing children, in turn becoming weaker and less independant because of pregnancy and having to raise a child. Bayonetta twists this and turns it into something that makes her stronger.
@XXENOLOGY no different from a Conan the Barbarian game where he just wears a loincloth or any fighting game with shirtless dudes. Had she actually done her research and understand the purpose of the game's design she wouldn't have looked like such a she devil.
I have to disagree (with this one part of your comment). Men walking around shirtless has nothing to do with showing their sexuality. The defining sexual trait of a man is his penis. Women on the other hand have two defining traits. The vagina and the breasts. Therefore it is a difference whether a man is walking around shirtless or a woman, because the woman is showing her sexuality and the man doesn't. So women who are are walking around shirtless are not equalizing themself with men, they takings rights "not even" a man has, in showing sexual traits. So women who are walking revealing there breasts, to show that they are equal to men, are not showing that at all. The is message is, that they are greater than men, because they can reveal sexual traits without "consequences". And that is something that bothers me, because I am someone who wants equalization and not domination ( neither a man or a woman should dominate). I hope I could articulate myself in the right way. I not that good with words, so I hope that no one will misunderstand my comment. I do agree with your comment, but I think showing sexual traits is not the right way for women to emancipate/equalizing themself from men.
There was one thing I remember in the game that was slightly jojo-y and even then bizarre adventure didn’t invent the concept of characters punching each other really fast
Boneless Communism Nothing to say about the over-the-top ridiculousness? The flashy style? The homoerotic overtones? The proxy fighting? The needless posing?
Also, "a very much alive Jeanne" is a phrase so strong that it literally became the premise of half of Bayo 2, and in Bayo 3... [Spoilers for Bayonetta 3 ] ... a game where nearly everyone across infinite multiverses die (including Bayo herself), Jeanne STILL manages to somehow thwart death one more time just to have a "Vergil and Dante vs. Arkham" moment with Bayo and Singularity.
Bayonetta is one of the reasons I started to get confident with my body and my personality. I love her so much. So proud that such a beautiful woman exist even if it isnt the real world
One thing that struck me in just the intro was the color palettes and at-a-glance aesthetic of all the dmc competitors compared to bayonetta’s. Every game looks really dark, with edgy, hypermasculine protagonists and graphics (except for nightmare before Christmas maybe). The second the Bayonetta clips cut in, it immediately stands out as more sleek and flashy rather than gritty and cool. I can see how this change in aesthetic was refreshing at the time, especially when combined with bayonetta’s campy tone. Bayo 2 pushes this harder by really pulling the color palette out of the browns and reds of the time
rockectsciencesuckz If somebody asked me if I could only have one game that I could play and no other it would be Bayonetta. For me it’s the perfect action game in every way, that I just couldn’t see it being bettered. I’ve had the 2nd game since release and just never got around to playing it. I played the demo and for whatever reason it just never gave me that same buzz as the 1st game so I never got around to playing the full game, partly because I feel it maybe just a sequel for sequels sake. So now 9 years on from the original I think I’m ready to let the perfection of the 1st game go and jump in to the 2nd, and hopefully not be as disappointed as I was when Viewtiful Joe 2 left a bitter taste in my mouth lol.
That's a bit of hilarious editing to put the controversy chapter with bayonetta burning in a fire and then the next chapter moves her piece as FAR AWAY AS POSSIBLE on the map. A tasteful edit which really speaks to the effort you put into the video. An amazing video and great work.
I get a feeling they took the idea of Angelic beings looking more demonic as you attacked them from Mundu's progression of damage in Devil May Cry, first starting as a Angelic God like figure until eventually just being a melting monstrosity slowly crawling towards you in a sewer.
They may have also taken it from the Bible itself as there are several scriptures that describe angels looking like things that we may find hideous (such as different animal heads, multi-wings, having bodies covered with eyes).
@@NavySharkz*Mundus appears as a defeated demon God that looks very similar to a biblically accurate angel.* Hint:Biblically accurate angels have several eyes.
I'm pretty sure that the purpose of the angels being like this is not to make them more demonic, but to show that in the end they are beings of flesh just like the inhabitants of Inferno and Chaos, and that therefore they are not superior to the previous two Nothing like that, just different.
This was wonderful. I loved every minute of it and it reminded me that even though platinum has gotten way better at what they do, the first bayonetta has such a charm to it that I'm going to go play it right now.
I play the hell out of B1 and B2. The only flaw for B1 I had was QTE. That was dumb for the wrong reason because of the instant death. This game legacy will keep the DMC spirit alive until the inevitable DMC5. Seeing HD collection on PC and modern console with DMC1 collab with Monster Hunter World? E3 can't com sooner enough. Interestingly enough, P+ had to play DMC3 and DMC4 several time just to create the fluid combat system but also wanted to differentiate themselves. Since DMC3 and DMC4 had the most hardcore Fighting Game mechanic thanks for the Third Strike background, Bayonetta approached it with the middle ground but still complex to an extend, especially the parry system that came from Onimusha and Sengoku Basara. They don't want to go full Third Strike with Royal Bock from DMC. Admittedly, Royal Guard would deal the most damage and most broken if mastered for the SS Rank for DMC if did correctly. However, mastering Royal Guard was like you are playing a fighting game with frame perfect block unlike Parry.
I don't know if I'm just weird, but I actually really liked the story of Bayonetta. It's about a woman learning to love herself and others and becoming a stronger person for it. That just so happens to be buried beneath a bunch of wild spectacle and lore, but it's still there.
Endless Road Bayonetta is definitely better than DmC in both gameplay and being a successor to DMC. DMC1, DMC3, Bayo1, and Bayo2 are all some of my favorite games and I honestly couldn't tell you which one I think is the best of them.
Dante Son Of Sparda It has the best moveset mechanics and character variety, but the levels, lackluster bosses, and lazy implementation of backtracking works against it. I'd rank the Devil May Cry games as such: 1) DMC3: SE 2) DMC1 3) DMC4: SE 4) DmC: DE (with Hardcore mode enabled so it actually feels like DMC game) 5) DMC2 DMC3 and 1 clearly have the most effort and craft put into them.
The only thing more amazing than Bayonetta herself is that her glasses stay on through all that! Also call those "Halos" all you want but we know those are gold rings from Sonic.
To be fair, Anita Sarkeesian is easy to ignore due to her lack of genuine research like when Hitman Absolution was mistakened for giving points on killing Female Strippers during Contracts Mode during her review. That said, LOVE your video and LOVED your details surrounding said "elephant" in the room.😎
I agree with you that Anita Sarkeesian is fraud because she's never played video games in her life, and the video games that she criticizes she stole from other let's players.
Especially since they’re in the same universe. An item in Bayo mentions a powerful witch named Eva who made a contract with “the legendary dark knight” to fight the legions of Inferno...demons. These are Dante and Vergil’s parents.
@@JamesCPotter13 they’re not exactly in the same universe, considering there’s no connection whatsoever aside from Kamiya’s often included references to DMC in bayo. The DMC universe hasn’t shown any reciprocation lol
Bayonetta is a good example of how over the top set pieces both in action and sexiness can detract from the story. Did you know there are collectable notes that expand on the lore of Bayonetta? They are an interesting read. If you compare it to DMC, Bayonetta doesn't take its story seriously at all. DMC tries to take it seriously. Bayonetta 2 is more serious but the writing isn't strong enough. Bayonetta is a fun character but she's not given the correct plot to make her truly lovable. If you ask anyone why they like Bayonetta as a character it would be because she's very over the top and confident in her body but that rarely affect the plot. We like DMC3 Dante because he up holds his father's legacy while grieving for his brother. We like Vergil because he believes he needs power to protect the ones he loves. We like these characters beyond their attitude. Sadly I can't say the same for Bayonetta. She's trying to save Jeanne in 2 but the plot isn't really about saving Jeanne. The scenes with Cereza are cute but it's just Bayonetta being Bayonetta. A game that features her and Jeanne's friendship being tested.would be great. It would give a chance for Bayonetta to show more character and it would give the writers a chance to flesh out Jeanne who really isn't that distinct from Bayonetta. Which is a big problem for such a prominent character. I get that the idea is that they're supposed to be more Ryu and Ken similar than Dante and Vergil different but it just makes Jeanne not have an identity. It doesn't help that they play almost exactly the same thus removing even more opportunity to set them apart in personality. And yes Ryu and Ken have almost the same moveset but they have very different personalities and even the slight differences in their moveset highlighted the differences in their personalities. In Bayonetta 3 Jeanne should play differently from Bayonetta and be her own character.
What? No, I like Dante because he’s a fun character to watch, and I like Vergil because he’s cool, full stop. The plot only adds to what makes them likeable, same as Bayonetta, difference is the plot is much harder to follow, but that doesn’t matter.
It’s pretty awesome that kamiya himself said he played about half of DMC4 for “research” of making bayonetta. Definitely high praise on the new DMC team’s part, coming from the original creator. And that he brought bingo morihashi, the Writer for 3,4, and 5 on to write bayo 2. Bayonetta is definitely his love letter and intended counterpart to the other franchise he Created and clearly has a LOT of respect for to this day
Another point on the sexiness of the umbran witches is the fact that the player is being allowed to watch bayonetta on her adventure. Film reels can be seen in cutscenes and in the menu as if the player were watching a film of bayonetta. This could also be why she dances and uses enemies weapons as stipper poles; she's showing off to you.
Bayonetta is really the spiritual successor of Dante and DMC in general, I love everything about her but fuck I dont have a Nintendo console to play Bayonetta 2 edit: until today I have no idea the story of Bayonetta even tho I 100% the game XD
I think another aspect that helped to modernize Bayonetta and make it beginner-friendly was that the punch and kick mechanics worked similar to other action games’ light and heavy attacks (especially being mapped to left and top face buttons). Love your retrospectives by the way, been marathoning them the past few days!
What lured me into Bayonetta was bayo herself. Admittedly, the only reason why I wanted to play the game was because I thought she was hot lolo, but a bit of a deeper dive into the game and the character, I realized that she's so unique and different than your average video game woman protagonist. I feel like bayo is such a feminist icon, she's so different in the way she uses her sexuality, instead of her being a creation for male consumption, she's sexy for herself, it's her genuine personality, plus she's in charge of everything which is so refreshing to see a more dominant woman character. And I love that the one time she gets saved, it's by another woman. So yes, Bayonetta herself is one of a kind, and despite not being a huge gamer, I feel like bayo is so unique, and that's what really got me into the game. 💓
15:35 I think it's also there to balance out the more mythical parts of her design. Glasses are a very terrestrial thing so it cements that despite the outlandish outfit she's still a woman and not some spirit.
2:35 “Bayonetta can be credited for keeping character action games alive when Devil May Cry wasn’t around.” Bayo 1 released only 1 year after DMC4 and Bayo 2 released only 1 year after DmC. Character action games were still alive even without Bayonetta
You do realize that if Bayonetta wasn't around, the time gap between 4 and DmC would have been 5 years. That would be 5 entire years without any character action games, at least in the AAA market.
I'm really looking forward to your coverage of Bayo 2. While I loved the story of the first game, it was admittedly a bit of a mess in terms of pacing and convoluted-ness (that's a word now, I'm trademarking it), which is why I find the sequel fascinating from a narrative standpoint. In my eyes at least, it's 2 stories folded into one. The first being a very personal journey to save a friend, while the other is... essentially explaining the first game and making things feel more... I hate to say natural, but less convoluted. (A god of Chaos being introduced into the mix goes a long way to explain how the cork board conspiracy theory approach to scheming actually being a plausible thing.) It's one of the few sequels that I would say is just as easy to get into the lore with as the first game, while still being a continuation.
Also, to address the "Is this sexist" thing... I recently heard a quote from a stream that summed my thoughts up very succinctly. "She's filled to the brim with sexiness and confidence... but none of it is for you." It's that agency that I think elevates her above just being eye candy. Also, while there is that male gaze element, but I do find it important that at no point does ANY of the cast bring up any mention of her sexuality or gender. Nobody questions whether or not she's straight, in fact her interactions with Luka and Jeanne leave that very ambiguous in a good way, nor is there any "...for a girl" remark in the game. Any of the conversations that happen, you could do a find and replace search replacing Bayonetta with Dante, and Umbra Witch with Demon, and they wouldn't seem out of place, which I think speaks to the respect Kamiya and the team has for the character. While the initial thought that got the ball rolling was "What if a woman?" they made her a fully realized character like they would've with any male character. But, it's 3am and I've been binging on your videos and I've entered the rambling delirium I get when I"ve been awake for too long so I'll finish the binge tomorrow.
Platinum could give some of Bayonetta's early concept designs to Gucci and I'm sure no one would be able to tell they came from everybody's favorite gunslinging witch.
Excellent coverage of the journey from Kamiya & his team. I have always enjoyed the lore, world building, and vast gameplay that pushes the boundaries of a player. DMC was a unique chapter to dive into. There are current games influenced by it, but not as fun. But Bayonetta is a dazzling rollercoaster ride. It's wild that it has been 10 years since the Umbra witch danced across our screens, and hearts. So thankful for games like this, daring to be different, yet fun, provocative, and still entertaining. I cannot find any other series to compare Bayonetta. She has her own identity, yet is part of a vast universe. I love what it's become, and the team behind the series is incredible. Yes it's bizarre, but damn is it fun. I love the voice acting crew, the music, and atmosphere constantly on a rollercoaster ride. And that boss battle = insane but how many titles are that gutsy right now? None. That's what makes it so special. Ten years ago this game captured our hearts. Totally worth revisiting again. And I cannot wait to dive in again. 😅 I have been blocked by Kamiya as well. But it's an honor, a right of passage for us.
The weakest parts of Bayo 1 to me are the arcade sections and most of the boss fights. They both limit the player to a frustrating degree, and really go against the freeform flow of the rest of the game. Whenever I think of replaying this game, I always dread having to do the motorcycle section or the rocket section near the end.
welp, after playng the game once and watching your video, I guess I have to replay it with the accessories and get the sequel. Also I'm gald youtube still makes me find good creators from time to time.
ahhhh one of my best video game ever I just love bayonetta (Cereza) since the game first come out in JP in the end of 2009 tell now and its as much that I love DMC (dante) my old boy back in ps2 first era , great video even thought I know much of it but still so much fun to watch you did an amazing job.
It's interesting to see how Bayo's weapon system technically "devolved" from having separate hand and foot weapons (with her guns as a permanent ranged weapon) to Bayo 3 only having single weapons to serve all functions, including ranged attacks. It could be argued that losing this defining trait of Bayo sort of removes some of the player creativity in weapon combos and possibilities, but in practice Bayo 3 provides so many goddamn weapons with so many moves with built in synergy that... screw it, Bayo 3's simple weapon system rocks. The old system was neat, but in the end Bayo is all about brute force solutions under a thin guise of elegance, and I'll be damned if I ain't entertained.
Just finished playing through Bayonetta for the first time and it was a very strange experience coming from playing all the DMC games beforehand. I found Bayo's gameplay extremely reactive and Witch Time being necessary to really get anything done, as there aren't many chances to stun enemies properly. DMC is obviously proactive and aggression-focused so I had to flip my brain upside down to play Bayo properly.
I think bayonetta has some of the best cutscenes in any game ever, it has perfectly choreographed fight scenes, cool character design and an amazing sounds track with addicting gameplay........just a shame that bayonetta 2 is a wiiu/switch exclusive...
The way that bayonetta has an absolute choke hold on me (blame my hyperfixation) and the way you perfectly explained WHY bayonetta isn't just a "hot woman beat up things to turn men on" type game made me happy beyond belief. Personally I think bayonetta uses her sexuality to express herself in battle.
I absolutely love Bayonetta the game the character basically everything about it the game really teaches you how to do better it’s amazing and I can’t wait for Bayonetta 3.
To anyone who thinks the story is overly convoluted or nonsensical, I strongly implore you to go and check something like a lore video of Bayo 1 and 2 online. Foxcade did an amazing job with this video, but with respect to him he got the bit on the story way wrong. There's more nuance than many people see, a ton more depth with a unique world of lore (that could potentially be connected to DMC), and actually good writing. Yeah it can be confusing, especially if it's your first time playing with no knowledge of either of the game's plots, but honestly the stories have no right being as interesting and good as they are, with bits like Balder (mostly in 2), Loptr (in both), Bayo, and even less seen characters like Rodin all having a lot more depth than given credit for here. I hope anyone who reads this gets to appreciate the stories of this universe more :)
I loved the game but despised the story, then watched the anime movie and fell in love with it. Then when I played the game again I just understood and embraced the tone from the jump and it really brought it all together for me. If you haven't watched the movie defiantly check it out
Just thought I'd chime in on the punishment for spamming dodge. I'm not sure how many people know but you can actually cancel it out (though it does take some time to master), by spinning with the movement stick before Bayo lands for the pose! Hopefully this will help some of you on you Angel slaying adventures XD Great video by the way, Pure Platinum imo ;^)

Rapunzel is Best Witch.
Bonus fact: Bayonetta's familair Lady Butterfly is based on a WWII era tran woman spy who was quite deadly.
"Madama Butterfly takes her name from the title character of an opera by Giacomo Puccini. Butterfly (also known as Cio-Cio-san)
was a Japanese girl who fell in love with an American serviceman, who
married her for convenience with the intention of leaving her once he

Heartbroken, Butterfly agreed to give up the child to the couple before
taking her own life by means of using her father's knife to commit jigai, a female form of seppuku, to preserve her honor."

I don't know how true either is unless Kamiya said it himself.
Her hair, her dances, the guns, her mole. Bayonetta is the most faithful Witch portrayal of real life witches
This basically confirms that bayonetta is the closest thing you will find to a real life witch in gaming.
I think the fact of Balder bringing young Cereza to the present, is the fact that Cereza, was imprisoned and an outcast. See it this way: The budget that went into developing this could have gone to a more popular game. That is called substitution costs.
Personally, I love the games. Some of the best I ever played, but looked through the publishers lense, the income is important. Most important.
@@hallarious506 I can understand that.
you can't let the scale tip too much to one side. Too much power to a creator and he might keep piling shit up, suffocating the project and resulting in things becoming unfinished. Too much power to management and the project may be cut short to fit a specific release window, or it may turn into a byproduct of trends. You need a balance of those two aspects for it to work out the best way possible

That is a legendarily petty move that I would’ve never noticed if it wasn’t spelled out for me & I love it.
Shade Blackwolf thats because she probably would kill you
Rando it definitely is competitive market now with dmc and bayo 3 coming out.
@Rando "Jackpot!"
Bayonetta is rebooted of DMC, DMC stories already dead even before it started.
you can see it based on the stories alone.

"Kamiya was so stubborn, that even after the higher-ups relented he proceeded to not only keep Bayonetta's glasses, but also to put glasses on every single character in the game." --- Hideki Kamiya, a true embodiment of a paragon! (Fuckin' good bit, lol)
What a history this game had, god damn! I love the seeing the improvement to your videos been making over the years, Fox. The intro, and title card are pretty top-tier editing, also amount of research you put into this project is impeccably sexy! ;)
In the middle of making a video myself, and hopefully, it can be nearly as good as this!

I'm starting to understand why Bay and MGR was a lot like Devil May Cry now, same individuals behind it. Wow
In fact, Bayonetta was a thing even before DMC, so bayonetta did not copy DMC
@@willmerguzmanrodriguez6635 I regret to inform you, but the early PS2 game is in fact older than the newer PS3 game
@@coatlessali wtf is he talking about?
Imo Bayonetta is sexy female characters done right. She owns her sexuality and the cutscenes are appropriate in terms of like- what they’re conveying. There’s no butt-shots during her interactions with Cereza for example, which is good because it’s an adorable scene with a child. Sexy but not Over-sexualised. It’s not like Mass Effect for example where female characters (especially Miranda bless her) were ‘shown off’ in the most out of place moments just for the sake of it. It felt creepy. I say this as a feminist and a huge lesbian.
Also wonderful video! I’ve been dying for more Bayo content since I beat both games last week~
Thanks!! I felt the same way, and think it's absurd to call it sexist within the context of the actual game but I thought it was still a topic worth addressing.
What's a huge lesbian?
the opposite of a smol gay
Jin kisaragi a fat one
Bayonetta twists this and turns it into something that makes her stronger.
... Slow clap dude, slow clap, you have my respect
Where the fuck were you when Anita was trying to ruin everything?!?!?!
Darth Sauron every part of a woman is a defining sexual trait. Even feet are no longer safe.
“Here’s your Jojo reference”
This entire game is just a massive Jojo reference. I fully expect Bayonetta 3 to reveal that Bayo’s last name is Joestar.

still a classic to this day,and its been about 10 years. crazy how the time flies
Bayo 2 pushes this harder by really pulling the color palette out of the browns and reds of the time
I just finished bayonetta 1 yesterday for the first time! I loved every bit of it

rockectsciencesuckz If somebody asked me if I could only have one game that I could play and no other it would be Bayonetta. I played the demo and for whatever reason it just never gave me that same buzz as the 1st game so I never got around to playing the full game, partly because I feel it maybe just a sequel for sequels sake.

@@NavySharkz*Mundus appears as a defeated demon God that looks very similar to a biblically accurate angel.*

@@aithanleeom5152 Agreed.
I'm pretty sure that the purpose of the angels being like this is not to make them more demonic, but to show that in the end they are beings of flesh just like the inhabitants of Inferno and Chaos, and that therefore they are not superior to the previous two Nothing like that, just different.
Waiting for a DMC/Bayonetta crossover.

What do you mean the third strike background ?

Bayo is better DMC than DmC:DMC.

Bayonetta is definitely better than DmC in both gameplay and being a successor to DMC.
DMC1, DMC3, Bayo1, and Bayo2 are all some of my favorite games and I honestly couldn't tell you which one I think is the best of them.
Dante Son Of Sparda
It has the best moveset mechanics and character variety, but the levels, lackluster bosses, and lazy implementation of backtracking works against it. I'd rank the Devil May Cry games as such:
1) DMC3: SE
2) DMC1
3) DMC4: SE
4) DmC: DE (with Hardcore mode enabled so it actually feels like DMC game)
5) DMC2
DMC3 and 1 clearly have the most effort and craft put into them.
I love the story of Kamiya told all the douji artist that there using Bayonetta to sub when she's a dom

You won’t believe how bad I want a crossover with DMC and Bayonettta 😫
Especially since they’re in the same universe. An item in Bayo mentions a powerful witch named Eva who made a contract with “the legendary dark knight” to fight the legions of Inferno...demons.
These are Dante and Vergil’s parents.
@@JamesCPotter13 they’re not exactly in the same universe, considering there’s no connection whatsoever aside from Kamiya’s often included references to DMC in bayo. The DMC universe hasn’t shown any reciprocation lol

Another wonderful video from you! Thanks for uploading this one especially. Bayonetta is my favorite action series.
Jeanne does play differently from Bayonetta. She has higher damage output, different timings, and her own weapons and lore.
What? No, I like Dante because he’s a fun character to watch, and I like Vergil because he’s cool, full stop. The plot only adds to what makes them likeable, same as Bayonetta, difference is the plot is much harder to follow, but that doesn’t matter.
Bayonetta is an underrated and unfairly treated masterpiece.
I'm really glad to see someone else show some love to the Ghost Rider video game.
Looking at this after finishing Devil May Cry 5, drooling at the mouth wondering what Bayonetta 3 is going to be like…
Bayonetta is really the spiritual successor of Dante and DMC in general, I love everything about her but fuck I dont have a Nintendo console to play Bayonetta 2

I think another aspect that helped to modernize Bayonetta and make it beginner-friendly was that the punch and kick mechanics worked similar to other action games’ light and heavy attacks (especially being mapped to left and top face buttons). Love your retrospectives by the way, been marathoning them the past few days!
Didn't ask for this, but thanks. The world needed it.
Couldn't believe I ran across an hour long video on Bayonetta but am so glad I did!
DMC, Ninja Gaiden and Bayonetta are in a league of their own. Excellent masterpieces. Good video
15:35
I think it's also there to balance out the more mythical parts of her design. Glasses are a very terrestrial thing so it cements that despite the outlandish outfit she's still a woman and not some spirit.
2:35 “Bayonetta can be credited for keeping character action games alive when Devil May Cry wasn’t around.”
Bayo 1 released only 1 year after DMC4 and Bayo 2 released only 1 year after DmC. Character action games were still alive even without Bayonetta
You do realize that if Bayonetta wasn't around, the time gap between 4 and DmC would have been 5 years. That would be 5 entire years without any character action games, at least in the AAA market.

We still had other character action games to keep the subgenre alive in the meanwhile. Bayonetta wasn’t the only one

If Bayonetta really cut her hair in Bayo 2, she could've lost all her umbran magic because it's her actual main weapon.
I'm still playing Okami and Bayonetta now when so many other 'commercially successful' games faded away
I remember one reviewer in the local gaming magazine mentioned that the glasses made Bayonetta look like a secretary rather than some badass witch :D
Why not both?

Amazing video. Entertaining, informative, and nicely put together.
You deserve a Lot more recognition. Congratulations.
I prefer DMC but I gotta say it, Bayonetta's music is just so much better and puts me in a flow state like no other game
Keep it up man I love your videos
I'm excited to see your retrospective on Bayo 2 and eventually in the future. Bayo 3. :)
17:05 I just find that hilarious and I absolutely freaking LOVE that interaction
I asked for a 55 minute Bayonetta documentary , and I got it ! Cant wait for your Bayonetta 2 vid!
Okami was and is a master work! Stands up to the test of time for me and the main character couldn't be cuter!
Yea

But I can't stop watching your video.
Sub. Liked.
Your videos are awesome.
Hopefully this will help some of you on you Angel slaying adventures XD
Great video by the way, Pure Platinum imo ;^)
We need God Hand 2
29:07 "And getting a Stone statue can be a little demoralising"
Me: *gets 13 stone medals out of 19 chapters*
For all the convoluted plot points, Jubileus is the only one actually set up and paid off satisfactorily.
WHAT?!?! GOD HAND IS SO AMAZING. IT SOLD THAT LITTLE?
