That's so great to hear! Townes has this kind of raw emotional energy in his songs that really grips me. Definitely a good idea to get back to the guitar by learning some of his songs, he has a lot of them.
I've sometimes wanted to be able to see the tab right there when I've watched other tutorials on youtube so I decided to just put the tab right there in the video so it's right in front of you and it makes it easier to follow along. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic lesson. Many other youtube tutorials have too much waffle, but you get to the meat nice and promptly, and the diagrams and pace are just perfect. Bravo!
I pretty new to this guitar business and I am also a left but you broke it down in such a way that even a newbie learning backwards could understand !! Thanks
Wow this is a tremendous help. The picking pattern is actually quite challenging to get going. This song plays alright just strumming the chords with some hammers, but is obviously far richer with the picking. Thanks a lot for putting this together.
Great help on isolating that picking pattern. Well done! It really makes the tune (well of course the vocals do). Like any great player, TVZ had pretty strong sense of timing which anchored his songs and allowed him to float over it with his heartfelt vocals. Very important when playing unaccompanied. Look forward to seeing more.
I am grateful to people like you who share their heart of music and their skills on vocals and guitars. Thank you. I love Townes and his music and lyrics. Great stuff:) I am practicing my heart out on this fingerpicking. More! More!:)
Thanks for this lesson. I'm self teaching the guitar the past 9 mon learning to strum. I'm ready to move on to bigger and better things. I heard this song on Hell On Wheels great TV show I might add that has a lot of this kind of music. I watched your tutorial and picked it up quickly. Kind of lost on the hammer on but I'm sure I'll get it. There's just not a lot of picking tutorials out there for beginners. Hope to see more of yours. Thank you.
That would be amazing. My 15 yr old son had recently started teaching himself to play guitar and TVZ is one of his favorite songwriters. I’ll point him in the direction of this tutorial and any others that you might post. Thanks again!
waiting around to die is a great working tutorial. Panch and Lefty intro off Heartworn , Townes has a craze look look and smile , Looks like a pull off on the high e?
Nice! i play it a little differently. Using my middle finger to cover strings 1 and 2 and keeping my index on string 3. That way the thumb isnt making those bigger jumps. But i see the benefit of just keeping your index and middle on strings 1 and 2 the whole time. great tutorial.
I've been watching tutorials on Dylan, Cash, U2 and Van Zandt the whole evening and this is by far the best one! Thanks a lot! I hope you do "Lungs" one day! There are some Lungs-Tutorials on UA-cam, but they are not nearly as helpful as this one.
Sorry for the 7 years late reply! Thanks for watching! I'm thinking of posting videos again on this channel and I think I'll be doing some more Townes songs to start with, Lungs is one of the top songs I'll be checking out.
Man this is great! Townes van Zandt tutorials are almost non-existent on youtube. I would love to see you do more TVZ songs like Pancho and Lefty. Or other awesome 'lonely cowboy' tunes. Any plans for future songs?
I was planning on doing Panch and Lefty, I was tabbing out the version he plays on Heartworn Highways but the picking pattern is always changing throughout the song so I'm trying to figure out just one picking pattern to show you guys. I've been extremely busy lately so I haven't gotten around to recording a video but hopefully I'll be able to post a video soon so stay tuned!
Thank you! I always planned to make more videos but then some circumstances made it so I couldn't record properly and I had a lot on my plate so I ended up not posting. I am however thinking about starting to post videos again. Your comment means a lot to me, thanks a lot and thanks for watching!
Trace Adkins played this song on the new Monarch television series fingerstyle without a capo and it sounded great. I had never really been a big country music fan, but great music is great music no matter the genre. Being a rock fan from the 60s and 70s it seems to me that country is the new rock and everything else seems to be pop or pop and rap mixes. I like some of all genres.
Wow, thanks for all the great work! I had a quick listen and everything sounds spot on. (PS i came here via the TV series Ozark (S02E02) i never heard of Townes Van Zandt before. This song also reminds me of SRV's Life by the drop) Great finger picking song; definitely gone implement it in my repertoire.
Thanks! I always planned on doing more but then life got in the way. I'm thinking about posting videos on this channel again now though! Never too late, right?
It doesn't matter what song I learn, it's always like i''ve only just picked the guitar up for the first time! Practice, practice, practice, practice and more practice. LOl!!!
colinatural I've been planning on doing more videos for the past months but something always stood in the way. I've got a lot more free time now so I'm actively working on some tunes that I'm planning on doing a video on, so stay tuned! :)
Awesome tutorial! You only have one right now, but fortunately it is for an amazing song. Can you show the fingerpicking pattern for Pancho and Lefty by TVZ?
Thanks for watching! Sorry for the 8 year late reply. I always planned to do more videos but then life got in the way. I'm thinking about posting videos again on this channel and I want to do more Townes songs, Pancho and Lefty is on my list!
I only discovered Townes Van Zandt over the past year. I have searched and searched for the identifying name of this type of gritty, hard-life, old-west sound but can't seem to find any particular name and every artist that is likened to this sounds completely popcorn cotton candy Bonanza/Gun Smoke-esque by comparison. I would think LOTS of people have learned to write to guitar like this, in the spirit of the ol' Young Guns/Bon Jovi, serious, grim sound but it seems not.
Texas.... have you heard Lightnin Hopkins? I believe TVZ Admired him a great deal and played many of his songs. If I’m not mistaken they became friends later and played together at the sight of TVZ greatest album, arguably. Old quarter in Houston, Texas.
I've heard it referred to as outlaw country but I'm not sure if it fits perfectly to what you're describing. I love these kinds of songs regardless. Thanks for watching!
Is there a reason why you would use your thumb, middle and index instead of thumb, middle index and ring finger? I find it much easier to pick the high strings with my middle index and ring, just leaving my thumb to switch between the two low notes. Is this "wrong"?
excellent work, dude. ive been playing it off of other tabs and something just didnt seem right. with your help ill have this down in no time. any chance you could do "Lungs" off of "Live at the Old Quarter?" in my opionion it is the best version and would be the most fun to play for a crowd. anyways, thanks again and keep up the good work.
Unfortunately I ended up abandoning the channel due to some circumstances that made it pretty difficult to make videos but I'm thinking about starting back up again! Lungs is still on my list! Btw Live at the Old Quarter is one of my all time favorite albums, my favorite Townes album for sure. I have in on vinyl and listen to it often.
Sorry for the super late response. I was always planning on doing a lot more videos but then life got in the way and I stopped posting. I'm thinking of starting again and Townes songs are high up on my to do list.

@@hlynurstefguitar Go for it! :) Can I make a request? Leadbelly - John Hardy (the guitar version). I've always wanted to learn that song. All the best!
This tutorial is based on how he plays it in Heartworn Highways. We can't see in that video where the capo is and he is not exactly tuned to E, he is likely tuned somewhere between E and F but it sounds like he most likely has the capo on the 4th fret (or he is tuned between Eb and E and has the capo on the 5th fret). That being said the location of the capo doest even matter, you can put it wherever you want where it's easiest for you to sing along to. The capo is just there to change the key of the song. Hope this makes sense!
I just learned about Townes a week ago and was immediately drawn to this song. This tutorial has brought me back to the guitar, thanks for your time.
That's so great to hear! Townes has this kind of raw emotional energy in his songs that really grips me. Definitely a good idea to get back to the guitar by learning some of his songs, he has a lot of them.

Wow this is a tremendous help. The picking pattern is actually quite challenging to get going. This song plays alright just strumming the chords with some hammers, but is obviously far richer with the picking. Thanks a lot for putting this together.
Thanks for watching! Hopefully you've managed to master the picking in the last 7 years 😅
Great help on isolating that picking pattern. Well done! It really makes the tune (well of course the vocals do). It’s capo on the fifth fret bro
