  • I couldn’t find much on UA-cam or the internet for that matter on parallel lines with a 320/400 amp meter so I decided to do this short video. I have a new shop and I will be building a new home so I required 200 amp panels on both the shop and house. This was inspected so it should be correct. This is for informational/teaching purposes ONLY. I will not be held responsible for your actions.

    Why the 2" nipple thru the back of the meter base and into the panel in the garage?

      @pwm001  5 місяців тому +2

      Lol. That was a mistake. I originally went straight through to the panel inside, but external disconnects are now required.

    Hello, I'm planning the same set up. What are the brand names and models of the 400 amp meter base and 200 amp disconnects. Thank you !

    • @pwm001
      @pwm001  3 місяці тому +2

      Hi, the disconnects are "QO 200 Amp 2-Pole Outdoor Circuit Breaker Enclosure with QOM2200VH Breaker" from Home Depot and the meter base is a "Milbank 320A 4T BYPS OHUG", but unfortunately I don't have the exact model number because it was supplied by the power company and now has the tamper proof lock on it.

      @@tomfinley8382check with your power company. Even if they make you supply the meter base they will have a list of brands and part numbers they will allow. And be aware 400/320 meter bases and enclosures that have the meter socket and one or more built-in breakers are expensive and often back ordered.

    Great video Phill, do you happen to remember where the meter base came from?

    • @pwm001
      @pwm001  Місяць тому

      Yes, it was provided by the power company. They had supply chain issues, but I got very lucky and they got one in at the very time I needed it. They do have them on eBay but make sure it’s UL Listed. There are a lot of no-name Chinese brands out there. I’ve
      had a Chinese made RV sub panel catch fire on me. Luckily I caught it in time.

    Hi Nice looking panel what size wire did you run to the subs

    • @pwm001
      @pwm001  2 місяці тому

      I only hooked up the shop so far, but it is Type SE Style R 600V XHHW-2 AA-8000 AL 3/C 4/0 AWG + 1/C 2/0 AWG (UL) E222531 Priority Wire Sunlight Resistant 23372-18. So that is 4/0 for the 2 hots and neutral and 2/0 for the ground.
      Hope that helps.

    Where im at the power company does not allow a seoerate ground to even go into meter base. Also they cities do not allow ser in conduit

    • @pwm001
      @pwm001  Місяць тому

      Those are very good points and you're right, I did need to move the ground so it went under the meter base. That is the power company's rule (Georgia Power) and not code. As far as the SER cable, since I stipped the outside insulation away when it went through the coduit, it was allowed.

      Hi, that is SE XHHW 4/0 aluminum cable. I removed the gray outer jacket/insulation. Hope that helps.

    You may not be able to come up through the bottom with the utility power as you are sharing the same space with yhe load side of the meter. You probably will have to come from the top down to the line side of the meter.

    • @pwm001
      @pwm001  4 місяці тому +2

      Actually they already did it on the bottom right like I mentioned in the video. And they squeezed all 6 wires in a 2 1/2" conduit! They were not too happy about that, but they got er' done! Lol...

    In New England when going through the sides of those you have to use myres hub connectors

      Thanks. That's interesting though, I didn't think they made a PVC connector. Learn something new everyday.

      @@pwm001 yes sir, it’s the connector that would be rated for it, that have some other type connectors that work for rigid also, but in the NEC in the wet locations section you’ll find the part about using waterproof connectors on this type of equipment. You had a very nice install though in this video . Just figured I’d pass some info along, I didn’t know about it until an inspector mentioned it

    • @pwm001

      Gotcha. Good to know. Not sure why they don’t require it here in Georgia, but I think they should do better with water proofing than they do
