Sad that attackers "looking to find feet in the D " is presented as a legitimate tactic when it is in fact an offence - which since the deletion of the stand alone Forcing Rule in 2011 is supposed to be dealt with under other Rules, i.e. such forcing remains a foul, as that was the last amendment made to this Rule. Notice how Henry Weir has been conditioned to believe that any ball foot contact by a defender in the circle is a foul - which will result in the award of a penalty corner - the exact opposite to what the Explanation with Rule 9.11 gives us.
Stand off a player with his back to you while he is shielding the ball and you will be considered not be attempting to make a tackle so not obstructed, and the attacker can roll in any direction he likes. Get to within playing distance of the ball so that the ball shielding player is preventing you playing directly at it only because he is positioned between you and the ball, and you will find that the Obstruction Rule is no longer applied. A player facing you with the ball can actually turn between you and the ball, getting closer to you as he does so, and still the Obstruction Rule will not be applied. There is no rational explanation.
Blocking. Any raising of the ball towards an opponent within 5m with a flick should be penalised as a dangerous play offence - but don't count on it - umpire are more likely to penalise a player hit with the ball for ball body contact, even if there is no intent to make contact (the defender is obviously trying to use his stick to intercept the ball) and no benefit is gained). Without either intent or benefit gained, there can be no ball body contact offence. The best bet is not to allow an opponent room to accept the ball, ai.e. to get to the ball first.
Naturally, none of these Rules will be mentioned when coaching players, most umpires are unaware of them.
