I personally never bought a custom made statue. Not because I wouldn't want one but because of not having enough money to. I do find that some custom made are done incredibly well do to the artistic freedom they have. Yet with that freedom comes a hefty price to bare, if you want one in your display case. The good thing that unlicensed sculpted statue collection have, is that for their not as many in total made and they take a huge risk in hope that people will love the results of their product. It is a big gamble to make a subject that would catch alot of people attention and desire to have. For that reason I give my respect to those few custom making artists who put it all out there, even though it might not work out as well as it could've. For those who have and still buy custom made statues. Congratulations and the best to you for sharing the risk along with the artist who create such amazing pieces for our pleasure.

While I will admit that you can get an amazing custom statue, their is a huge risk and cost to collecting them. License pieces like through Sideshow are affordable, maybe not as amazing as custom, but they have some really great work out there too.

No regrets for getting customs some absolutely amazing pieces by some groups , it all comes down to the factory being used for the quality of the end product , thats the main thing for me

Something I would add to your #3 reason, artistic freedom, is that as a customer in a custom group I actually have an opportunity to influence how a statue will come out looking. I can talk to a group owner and say, "You're missing this zipper on his/her jacket," or, "if you're making this character, you should design his/her base to look like..." and can possibly have a statue changed for the better. Official statue releases often reveal upcoming pieces after everything has been finalized and nothing can be changed, even if there are glaring errors on it.

I love customs for the most part. I own a couple in my collection and i love the artistic freedom some of these groups have and they take advantage of it. Also the low ES is attractive to most collectors.

I agree wholeheartedly with all of your reasons. I love customs because their concepts will always keep you guessing. No concept is out of bounds or out of line. If you want to see a half-naked Rogue licking her *** or a Wolverine ripping the guts out of Sabretooth, you will only find those with customs. Licensed companies are way too tame and sometimes I just want to be treated as a grown adult with my characters and not Mickey Moused or Disneyfied all the time like I’m a 12 yr old fan.

When SS always rehashes the same characters, customs are a breath of fresh air. All of my customs are Dragon Ball. The customs I would never touch is Predator, and Alien. If I'm buying one of those lines, it's gonna be from Prime1, since they do a great job with detail, and paint.

  • @NiekVL

After all these years I still don't know why we're calling them "custom". They're not made specifically for you or according to your wishes. Generally, they're made in a small amount, which does make them more special, but they're being made nonetheless.

Really interesting video. For folks like me who are more new to the statue game (but have collected other high value items in the past) Customs are really interesting and pique my interest for the reasons you have described (specifically the potential higher quality). It also gives some fun concepts like the Venomized Batman. Its great to see the creativity that otherwise would never exist.

#2 is by far the biggest one. If you want some characters they will never be made by SS, XM, P1, etc.
It is customs or nothing with them so I'm glad there is an option (even if it is so hard to find them as you seemingly have to know a guy who knows a guy).

Wether it’s high end- low end. Expensive or cheap.. collecting isn’t about having the most expensive, rare, cheap, low end, etc. It’s whatever makes you happy and you enjoy and or brings you joy. I have expensive pieces and I have stuff I have found at yard sales / rummage sales. Older, cheap what some call worthless and I call cool as crap. I have a 15 dollar Spider-Man head coin jar sitting on a shelf amongst my stuff .. why ? Cuz I can and it’s cool to me … I’m nowhere near the collect status as most … but I enjoy the channel and love window shopping 😆

Another reason is to support amateur and small artists to create and put out their creations. I can't say which one i'm making or have made (altough i would love to see a certain Red Goblin here on the channel), but i'm starting to afford a living with people who support this part of the market. • @flowwalker

One thing I thought about that you didn't mention was, the more popular a custom is or the more traction they get, they can actual prompt the big licensed companies to make that character that they've been neglecting. Case in point Silver Surfer. Sideshow was almost forced to do one to feed the fans craving. Sure the one they produced wasn't great but many fans who wanted a Surfer were able to get one, literally because of the popularity of the custom market and in particular one Silver Surfer statue. So I think that's another plus to buying customs. It forces the big licensed companies like SS to look at doing some of what they assume are "less popular" characters. And shows them that the desire is there and it's worth making said character. Same thing kind of happened with Rogue too.

I like how some commissioners will ask for community input (which portrait, colors, etc). Artistic freedom is my #1 reason with the detail aspect being a close 2nd. Unfortunately, my 1st foray into customs ended up with me not getting the statue I ordered thanks to UPS losing it but the commissioner also disappeared. Luckily paypal ruled in favor of my case and I got my money back...and so began my list of companies NOT to buy from.

I like the customs because as you mentioned, there are several characters that people desire that the licensed companies refuse to touch. How heavy is a 10 foot pole?
    Weight: 7 lb.
This expression dates from the mid-1700s, when it began to replace the earlier not to be handled with a pair of tongs. In the 1800s barge-pole was sometimes substituted for ten-foot pole, but that variant has died out.
a ten-foot pole is simply another way to describe a barge pole (used by bargemen to fend off from banks, wharves or other boats), but alternate theories exist.
One is that it refers to the 10-foot poles used by utility workers to de-energize high voltage utility equipment before performing maintenance.
Another is that it originates in a burial practice in New Orleans in which the the body is placed in a casket in an above ground tomb for exactly a year and a day, then the tomb is opened and the casket removed. The body is wrapped in a sheet and pushed to the back of the tomb with a ten-foot pole until it falls off the back of the shelf to the bottom.

"Factory"... I don't really believe factories are doing it and that is why they take so long to produce. Casting, prepping and painting of 50 statues that size can take a year-3 easy. Depending on whether or not it is your day job. I guarantee if they can afford factory production, they can afford a license. A factory will eat most of the profit. I am going to get a Mono max machine... and make a personal custom statue. Then I will cast it and sell garage kits. I know a guy to help with design. I'll leave the custom buying to you lol. Out of my price range and to much risk to lose money. The shipping now just is a total reason it's out of my reach. I can still enjoy watching yours

I stick to licensed statues because it’s not worth the risk. The custom anime statue companies are riddled with scams.
