Could lead the list of the most underrated Stones song ever.
Probably their most criminally underrated song. It just *ROCKS* !!!
...and you're right 👍
Number 1 in the US mainstream charts is underrated for you?
It was outlawed in the UK when it came out…..it’s classic Mick Jagger with with lyrics and conviction.
@@philipdru9290 From WickedPedia:
On the song, Jagger said at the time of its release, "It's not about the war. It's about how it started." Richards continued, saying, "This is not about the war. It's about how you build up some shaky dictator. You can't build them up, 'cause then you've got to slam them down."
The song was released the month before official US military action began.
@@silviamarquesfankanal1463 perhaps not in real time, but in relation to their body of work, absolutely. Because of the incredibly short shelf life of the subject matter, this song received zero....less, if possible....airplay once the war ended...it dated itself immediately.
You keep this song, about literally any other topic, on any album other than a relatively forgettable live album, and it would be as iconic as “Start Me Up”.
What’s great about the Stones is that they have so many of these hidden gems and when you find them, it’s like hearing them for the first time again
It's crazy.. I thought I knew almost every single Stones song and then I hear this lol
@@anthonieschaap1625 So...why did you think that? Why didn't you know this one? Do you not look at their catalog of studio l.p.s they have released?
@@alexkx8599 Highwire was only released on a Flashpoint which is a live album
@@alexkx8599 It was a single, never on an LP.
@@rodneycurtis7055 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highwire_(song)
This is one of those songs that Keith talks about being a hidden bomb. You may not get it right away but hit the right circumstances in your life and you will. Now, fourteen years after the fact, time has caught up with "Highwire."
Absolutley! They were right in 1990, and the song is just as, if not even MORE relevant today..
This song came out in 1991 as a response song to the Persian Gulf War. The Stones went political here and it's one of my favorite songs of theirs. It rocks!
Keith said publicly this was entirely Jagger's song but they were all keen to back him all the way!
Horribly still very relevant protest song.
So powerfully done too!
Didn't get the Radio airtime it deserved!
32 now
Steel Wheels was their last classic album and there is great guitar work you will not listen again in the following albums
An overlooked gem...
I remember someone gifting me Flashpoint when I was 12 years old and really liking the simplistic album cover and the live hits. Then I grew older and really liked this song's vibe, and then I understood the lyrics. That's what sold it to me 100%. Gotta hand it to the Stones for sending a message through their lyrics just as they've been doing since the 60's even when they don't really need to.
Same here, got the CD when I was 11.
"..We're gonna send in the 82nd Airborne.." Hooah..!
A most underrated and underplayed track...but classic stones...
Agreed
This should be brought into concert rotation...it is an easy, doable and crowd friendly song.
Keiths tone and Charlies timing pure Stones.
One of the most politically inspired songs by the Stones. Love it to death and the lyrics ring true today we really haven't moved on.
amydodd83 ..You so right bby
Marco Bocchia stfu dude
Check out sweet neo con by em,or blinded by rainbows
Right
Share it...
Open some ears and maybe eyes.
RIP Charlie. This song is so relevant today. Peace to all in this mad world.
Charlie Watts, a real class act.
video directed by Julien Temple
R.I.P. Charlie, another legend is gone💔
I also think this is underrated.
Even on this song CHARLIE LOOKING SHARP AS EVER MISS YOU CHARLIE
Like others have said, this would have to be one of their most under-rated songs ever. It's simply amazing and seems to have been completely forgotten over the years. I suspect it's because it was critical of the Gulf War and governments, etc, didn't want to know and still don't want to know about it.
used to love hearing this on the radio everyday in early '91.
I suspect you're correct. The first Gulf War was a weird thing....basically praised (or at least easily accepted) in both conservative and "standard liberal" circles. Forget some of the shady stuff and lies involved (fake babies in incubators story anyone?). It was odd that The Stones, who hadn't written a political song in years and Donnie Wahlberg and Flava Flav on that awards show (can't remember if it was The Grammys or not) were just about the only people to question things one bit.
classic Stones sound. Charlie, always the sharpest! love this
...youre so right...how sad that only a few months after you posted this our beloved Charlie passed away...i can still not believe it...
...ive been a fan since i was 12 years old...im only 38 now so i was gutted that i missed their Voodoo Lounge tour...i just discovered their music when they finished touring europe so i had to wait another few years to get the chance to see them...probably a good job because my dad wouldve never let me go anyway but for Bridges to Babylon i skipped school and queued up very early in the morning and got my spot in the front row...it was truly amazing Keith standing right in front of me at one point when he stepped off stage...my favorite one was always Charlie tho and i started playing the drums a few years later because of him...i will miss him so much and cant even imagine how Shirley, his family and the other Stones feel right now...heartbreaking...
Everyone firing on all cylinders!!!
Love it. When came out . I was without 82nd airborne. 2 years later I jumped into Grenada with 1st Ranger BN folliwed by 82nd
I never tire of Keith's signature licks !
And the video is great too. Keith is doing his Keith things, wonderful.
Written with Desert Storm in mind.
I remember when they released this during that war. I was happy that some classic rockers stepped up to write about the war.
Stones said more than most media at the time.
We sell 'em missiles, We sell 'em tanks
We give 'em credit, You can call the bank
It's just a business, You can pay us in crude
You love these toys, just go play out your feuds
We got no pride, don't know whose boots to lick
We act so greedy, makes me sick sick sick
So get up, stand up, out of my way
I want to talk to the boss right away
Get up, stand up, whose gonna pay
I want to talk to the man right away
We walk the highwire
Sending the men up to the front line
Hoping they don't catch the hell fire
With hot guns and cold, cold nights
We walk the highwire
Sending the men up to the front line
And tell 'em to hotbed the sunshine
With hot guns and cold, cold nights
Our lives are threatened, our jobs at risk
Sometimes dictators need a slap on the wrist
Another Munich we just can't afford
We're gonna send in the eighty-second airborne
Get up, stand up, who's gonna pay
I wanna talk to the boss right away
Get up, stand up, outta my way
I wanna talk to the man right away
We walk the highwire
Putting the world out on a deadline
And hoping they don't catch the shellfire
With hot guns and cold, cold nights
We walk the highwire
Putting the world out on a deadline
Catching the bite on primetime
With hot guns and cold, cold nights
Get up! Stand up!
Dealer! Stealer!
Hyyy!
We walk the highwire
We send all our men into the front lines
We're hoping that we backed the right side
With hot guns and cold, cold nights
We walk the highwire
We send all the men up to the front lines
And hoping they don't catch the hellfire
With hot guns and cold cold, cold, cold, cold nights
We walk the highwire
We walk the highwire
With hot guns and cold, cold, cold nights
With hot guns and cold, cold nights
Ms Margaret Thatcher had forbidden making any mention to the war, and the Stones came and made what they thought it was right. Great for them! That day they conquered RESPECT.
Way before desert storm I had my first combat jump 2 years after song came out
@@starshiptrooper2354 God bless and thank you!
When they started, just like many of their era, people thought rock was a fad and would fade. They also said it's supposedly a young man's domain. And when they got to their mid to late 40s people said they're over the hill. So damned if you do, damned if you don't. I don't care what anyone says. We're all entitled to our views etc. You either like them, diminished in some areas or not. Me, l'm just enjoying the beauty of UA-cam that's brought songs like this, and others that l hadn't heard before..But more importantly that their ages are 76,79,79 l want to enjoy every moment we have with them on stage. It's such a cliche but they've got such a big back catalogue which anyone that's already a fan, or just discovering their music can enjoy for the rest of our lives.
Meanwhile, the stones saw lesser bands rise and fall while they kept rolling. Imagine... the stones were famous and popular before something like the spice girls popped up. And the stones are famous and popular even after the spice girls are only remembered when someone mentions them.
Shit, the spice girls might actually have risen and fallen between two stones tours and albums LMAO.
What a fantastic song! Killer sound, pure Stones! Never played it live and I wonder why
VERY under-rated Stones song !!
Killer guitar sound by Keith. One of their best songs.
I was going to the “record store” (where we used to buy records) every day waiting for this to come out.
Timeless song about the war machine.
I loved this song a lot the first time I heard it, and I love it more on each listen. An insanely catchy track infused with pop and R&B. This is the stuff I want to hear if I ever see the Stones again - not the usual suspects.
Jesus Christ, why do the The Stones have to be so great?
Has a classic Stones sound and vibe. Sneering, sleazy rock and roll.
Happy 25th Anniversary to this song.
They nailed this one. Like the old days.
R.I.P. , Charlie!
Any relevance for our time? Yes! And it rocks!
What a band!!!! ....this tune is for the Stones just one of a million - other bands where happy to have this as a major hit!!!!
One of a kind and best rock band ever... F***ing good rock song All perfect as usual. Charlie's beat is phenomenal and the rest is Simply dah-best...
ICH LIEBE DIESEN SONG.ER DRÜCKT WIE KEIN ANDERER DIE AUSNUTZUNG DER SOLDATEN UN DIE ZERSTÖRUNG DER WELT DURCH KRIEGE AUS!!!
Ich hoere dich!
Classic Stones!
Bill Wyman played it on studio, but this video was recorded after he left the band. So, this is the first Stones's production ever without Bill Wyman.
Had to watch it again because l love it. I think this song's one l'd play in the jukebox in the bar.
I remember listening to this on the radio and watching the Bagdad sky light up.
"Our lives are threatened, our jobs at risk, sometimes dictators need a slap on the wrist, another Munich we just can't afford, We're gonna send in the 82nd Airborne." Those are some haunting lyrics that never become less true.
After hearing this after coming home from Desert Storm, it let me know that others appreciated our sacrifice and commitment. Thank you Rolling Stones ! Froze my ass off in that stinking place when it wasn’t unbearably hot.
Thank you for your service, sir!
@@CamoCrabby It was truly my pleasure.
Reading this, I honestly don't know what to say so I hope this is okay... I want to thank you for everything when going through that. I know someone from the US Navy who refuses to talk about it. I'm glad something like that song was able to show support when it seemed like there wasn't very much.
one of the great songs
I was reading the comments and they are still true 👍. What a great stones song. And still the war mongers are in place. We have to get them gone . May the Father bless you. And be with you and all of Mankind 🙏. I will not Consent. Come UP SCREAMING.
Rolling Stones = Timeless
First promo video when Stones appears without Bill!
Tha6s a great era. Between 89-92
Yes, Steel wheels/Urban Jungle tour
Their best in my opinion
Hot Rocks! The Rolling Stones
Anyone notice Bill Wyman wasn't there!
Is this peak Ronnie and Keith? Their blends were so natural at this point, nothing labored. What a jam.
so underrated, great groove!!
Would be a tremendous song to open with…..
"Where have all the young men gone...died as soldiers everyone" -Unknown
Pete Seeger?
Rolling Stones - Highwire (Get Up Stand Up).
They are magic...even now....the best at what they do
One of the rare excellent tracks from the early 1990s; probably the last one they had.
"Sex drive" was very nice too :)
@@fitzcaraldozito I haven't heard it or much or anything from them in 30 years.
@@nicholasduka497 This period of the Stones (89-91) is my favorite. It was the Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle tour; they were at their very top at this time 👍
Great song underrated.
Reminds me of Glen Frey's song SMUGGLERS BLUES, class song from a class band.
We miss ya Charlie !
My ears say “lies”, not “nights” or “knives” as I have read. We’ve sure learned a lot-Afghanistan. RIP Charlie-who kicks this off with two snaps-just like he did on “Gimmie Shelter”. War children.
The Rolling Stones - Highwire - Official Promo ! A great tune !!!!!!!
Hope you're ok, you never miss Friday Night Sessions :))
***** I'm fine !
Happy Birthday, Sir Mick, and many more! Others came and went...others crashed and burned...yet U and the Stones keep rocking!! Simply Awesome! True Warriors and Survivors who are still standing!! Thank you, Sir Mick!!
Skriveni dragulj Stonesa......meni mozda i najbolja njihova.......stvar koja me dize i ne drži me u stolici😊
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING track. Please release a DVD / Blu ray of the Stones promo films.
Greatest respect for Mick and the boys for refusing to cancel the booking on their top floor suite at the hotel in Vienna in favour of Bush&co following the unavoidable cancellation of the Stones trip to Vienna (due to unforeseen circumstances which involved a famous somebody tumbling out of a tree Down Under) .
A masterpiece of it's kind.!!
Som incrível dos Rolling Stones, pouco lembrado. E Charlie Watts elegante como sempre foi, de terno.
Thank you for posting the video!
Beautiful.. and first appearance without Bill Wyman
R.I.P. Charlie 😔

Oh wow, that almost made me feel like tearing up. It's so wonderful that they've touched so many people during their career. And you're a classic example, of someone in your age group that likes their music. It also reminds me of myself at your age in 1995. I was, and still a huge fan. They've a presence that few bands have. It's amazing that you've liked them since you were 6!. I don't know of anyone at 6 that's a fan.
This was shot at a (now demolished) pier shed at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NYC. My wife and I got passes to watch the shoot because I was the lawyer who drafted the permit for the shoot. I had no idea how tedious shooting these videos is. 10 -20 seconds of the sound system playing the song while band mimes singing and playing, then they cut, spend 20 minutes setting up again, and that goes on over and over again. We watched for a few hours. The shoot took them 3 days.
Spend some time on a project and what do you get? A work of art!
Thanks for your eyewitness account.
This song is amazing and underrated...why?
👍👍👍🔥💪
Great Stones song...under appreciated and as relevant as ever!
So Kool...love'em to bits.
absolutely one of their best
Awesome

Just another great song from this legendary band. Love it...
A song that talks about political war, with great tune...

i love this track and video.....thank you!!!!
I hope they are going to play this song live upcoming tour
Always been a great number.

great song...nice piece..
Mick was shooting the movie Freejack when this video was shot and they didn't need him on set for a day so he flew out to wherever this was shot and did it then flew back to the movie set. Even though he's not in the video, as stated below Wyman does play bass on it and might be the last song he did with them for that matter.
