I will say that, in my experience, the PS5 stays pretty clean. I live in a desert, dust is abundant, I keep my console on a shelf next to the TV, not enclosed, and standing upright. I received my console in early January of this year, last week I opened it for the first time to clean it. I was really surprised with how little dust there was inside the console. The amount of dust on the fan blades was barely noticeable, most of it was localized on the exhaust vents and even then, it wasn't a whole lot. The console stays pretty clean, in my anecdotal experience.
Luckily I’ve noticed that as long as you don’t smoke or vape the dust tends to stay pretty small and most of it doesn’t stick in the system, it just gets pushed through by the fan

I can't believe how complex and time consuming some of this testing is. Lots of hard work goes into this, I can see. At first glance, the SoC gets hotter but most of the other components run cooler. @@Popcorncarn Would you rather the components it’s supposed to be drawing heat from be hotter and the heat sink be cooler because its not absorbing the heat properly?

@@Bellissima2k you’re cherry picking at that point. Literally every other temperature reading was cooler on the new model. To call it a worse cooler is straight up false. You’re completely ignoring the other results
I'd be interested to see how the console behaves when it actually gets close to the temperature limit. Does it go into panic mode and ramp the fan up to 100%, or does it just stay at 18% and the console shuts off because it's overheating?
It shuts off. The fan speed never varies based on temperature. There is one speed when a game is running, and a lower speed when on the main menu with nothing running. When the console reaches a critical temperature it literally shuts off and gives an error message telling you to wait a few minutes before turning back on.
@@joemamr710 Interesting. That seems like a pretty bad design to me. How did you get it to overheat? Did the thermal performance drop that much over time?
@@EVPointMaster You can get it to overheat by just running it inside of a small plastic box or something. There is a lot of discussion around how much the metal cover on/off effects airflow for SSD itself and also other components around that slot. TL;DR - Basically, the SOC runs hotter on the newest model but, the memory runs cooler than the older model. 🤔 Austin Evans was partially right in his assumption that the newest model runs hotter (due to it's smaller heatsink & higher exhaust temperature 🌡️). 🤷🏾♂️ Therefore, the defendant is acquitted. Austin Evans is found to be not guilty. Case is now closed.
@@freddywayne I wish it was as easy as that. The thing is, this statement wasn't made by somebody small online, it's made by a huge brand/persona in UA-cam. The title of the video itself, and the double down statement is that 2nd gen PS5 is worst due to the "vents" being hotter. Do you think the general public would take that statement and consider the other details mentioned? No, they just think that 2nd gen PS5 bad, and 1st gen PS5 good. And guess what the 2nd hand market follow, and though not proven, with the size of his channel he could have cost Sony a LOT of money. So I appreciate your TLDRing, I see it's purpose, but this situation unfortunately can't be simplified into nothing. It has affected people and needs to be rectified.
So my big take away from this is both versions of the console run close enough thermally that the end user will not notice the difference, and that Sony is only running their fans at ~18% pwm, meaning that if there is temperature issues in the future they can potentially increase the fan speed to adjust for more powerful games or poorly maintained consoles. I can see them putting out a update in the future to increase the fan speeds if thermals become an issue. Having the console fan run at a low speed with the potential to increase it via a software update should help the longevity of the console. I am curious at what temperature and dba the console runs at when adjusting the fan speed higher then the stock speeds. How loud do the fans get and how much cooler does the console run when the fans are at max speed?
I haven't heard of any widespread issues with the first revision overheating so it's safe to say Sony didn't revise it for improved cooling. A cheaper to produce product that has no direct (major) negatives seems to be the intent

@@armylrs2391 Right but if I put my PC into an enclosed box while gaming, I'm confident it would drop performance quickly and eventually shut off for safety.

Wow in a 🏜.

This doesn't matter much since boost performance is not affected by temperature, as long as it's running within spec. I guess Sony knows what they're doing with these changes. These consoles are such a technical achievement. For the price, you're not gonna get a better PC but the cost is subsidized by game sales to an extent. New SKU and cooling looks more than adequate. @@Popcorncarn Would you rather the components it’s supposed to be drawing heat from be hotter and the heat sink be cooler because its not absorbing the heat properly?
What misinformation? The heatsink in the new PS5 is in fact worse and runs 5 degrees hotter when measuring the SoC than on the old PS5, so Austin was right.
But Austin Evans said that the new heatsink not being hotter would "defy the laws of physics"? how can this be?
Great work! I’d love to have some analysis of airflow around and inside the M.2 expansion slot. There is a lot of discussion around how much the metal cover on/off effects airflow for SSD itself and also other components around that slot. Some SSD heat sinks do not fit beneath the cover so the question is: is it absolutely critical for that cover to be in place? (Obviously Sony is going to say yes as that is the “safe” bet.)

TL;DR - Basically, the SOC runs hotter on the newest model but, the memory runs cooler than the older model. 🤔
Austin Evans was partially right in his assumption that the newest model runs hotter (due to it's smaller heatsink & higher exhaust temperature 🌡️). 🤷🏾♂️
Therefore, the defendant is acquitted. Austin Evans is found to be not guilty.

@@freddywayne I wish it was as easy as that. The thing is, this statement wasn't made by somebody small online, it's made by a huge brand/persona in UA-cam. The title of the video itself, and the double down statement is that 2nd gen PS5 is worst due to the "vents" being hotter. And guess what the 2nd hand market follow, and though not proven, with the size of his channel he could have cost Sony a LOT of money.
So I appreciate your TLDRing, I see it's purpose, but this situation unfortunately can't be simplified into nothing. It has affected people and needs to be rectified.
@@ryanawol77 - TL;DR😏 but, I do agree with your reply 💯%
Very helpful interview, really wanted to make sure these dark plates were really solid

Pretty sure its due to the fact that the PS5 doesn't seem to thermal throttle - it just shuts down when it overheats.
