I run a old handset Ireland 6 mill, with a 671 Detroit with belt drive, you will have days when it just fights you. What seems obvious is when you walk into the saw the rpm drops from your tractor its tough to keep your saw true if the rpms varies. Reason I use a Detroit is how fast the govenor kicks in to keep the rpms consistent, becarefull sawing solo only takes one piece of hardware inside a log that you can't see to cause real problems fast. Glad to see other guys trying there hand at milling, just becarefull safety is key in this business
Tim I am looking for a power plant to replace the case. You’re right about the RPMs they plummet when milling a large diameter. This video is old, try one if my newer ones and you will see some safety hardware now. I know solo milling is risky but haven’t found anyone to assist yet. Thanks for your insight. Good day!
I have always loved these old belshaw mills. I know you are catching a lot of flack in the comments but don't worry, just keep milling. I had this mill for a while and I used it exactly how you are. Ran off a direct tractor pto, and turned into the carriage. My mill belonged to my father before me and after many many years of use it was still cutting true the day I sold it. The only thing I did different than you was I rebuild all the structure with 2x6 steel tube and lagged everything into a concrete pad. I also mounted an 8k winch about the carriage to turn heavy logs. I only sold the mill because I went to a band mill for smaller kerfs on bigger high dollar slabs. I cut most of my dimensional off a swing blade made by turbo sawmill. I really enjoy your videos, keep up the great work.
Thanks. This is probably the worst video as far as content. BUT it did do a good job of transferring some of the frustration to the viewer! I have a welder coming and we will stretch the bunk, true it up, and anchor it down. The shaft is plumb level so there is no change of speed. The tractor is under powered but for hobby work it is ok. I do plan to build a log feed and turn logs on it. I look forward to MandM videos!
I once cut a pine log and one of the flitch's looked like a croc floating on the water, my 5-year-old daughter painted some eyes on it and we placed it in the garden, so it came to the point at school where the kids told the teacher what their parents did for a living and apparently I make crocodiles for a living
I get a kick out of all the experts that can't do this but pay close attention if their pimples are growing ! These Experts have never had a bad day , sure they crapped their pants but that was someone else's fault !!
The reason pto effects saw blade is because u joints speed up and slow down as they rotate, This sets up a vibration in saw blade. This can be over come by use of belts. Also you can down load a belt catalog and use belts to solve mandrel over load problem. You can get by with pto using correct shear pin type joint,But you will also need a old fly wheel of a hay baler, to over come the joint speed up slow down that messes with the blade. Most old balers also use 1 3/4 shaft like bell saw does. Belts are really the only way to go. Also bell saw depends on what they call high speed saw. What that means is slow feed rate. Saw works best at 550 rpm, feed at 47 fpm. [ that is 44 fpm at 525 rpm ] It needs 61 hp at 550 rpm 40 inch 24 tooth blade at maximum cut. Sawing hickory or oak. 40 hp sawing pine. All so always use 9/32 bits. 5/16 bits require another 10 hp. Because of low feed rate, The teeth will wear on the back side.No big deal when you notice wear throw them away. Search internet for the old bellsaw books. That explain all this. If you run this mill correct, It will do what you want it to. I sawed 50,000 mine props on one of these mills, In 1976 and 77. Most information you find on saw mills on the internet like feed rate does not apply to this mill.
The problem with round saws is they don't cut straight through the logs, cants , they cut in an arc ,and that arc is a lot larger than the death of the cut . Bands do cut at a slight angle as the carriages moves forward , but measure the total tooth travel while cutting through a log vs a round saws tooth travel! For the same diameter log . How you know why the round saws have to be so thick ( big kerf )
Yes my cut at max log diameter is 1/2 pi 20 = 31.4” or 79.8 cm. So my circle saw will cut a 14” board while a bandsaw will cut 31” for the same blade contact
I like what you did with this M14 the only thing I critique Belsaw on these mills is the carriage feed speed in proportion to the blade rpm. PTO at 540 and a 48" blade is around 6600 / 6800 rim speed and the belsaw carriage is to goosey and too fast at tme to get the best out of you power plant//tractor Slowing the feed by pulley changing would make a noticeable difference or converting to hydraulic feed is an option. Nice looking setup for the age and size. By the time you get 30 or 49 thousand board feet under you belt yo will be sawing like a slow pro...
Thanks Larry, I have been working on it all day. Its a pain in the butt. I will have a video coming out in the next 6 months with all the upgrades. I hope I survive to 50K BF!

That foundation sure does shake when turning that log. I don't understand how the mill stays aligned. A level and solid foundation is very important in order to cutting true lumber.

You are going to warp carriage. and destroy set works. Please do some research and learn how to run that mill. Also before timber king bought that company [ and then got sued ] Bellsaw always warned to never hook tractor to mandrel. always use belts. The blade can never run true using a tractor pto direct to mandrel. And i bought one where the blade broke off shaft and killed a guy. He was using a slip clutch which was rated at 8,000 inch pounds of torque,And that mandrel should never have over 600 ft pounds of torque. That is 60 hp. Where the blade goes on is only 1 3/8 inch. Belts will slip and smoke and break if blade locks up. If slip clutch is adjusted to slip at 600 ft pound it will start slipping to early. Sorry post so long but like i said i have seen guys killed.
