The psychologist here has a huge blind spot. The reason why kids react this way is that in video games in particular they are invested in trying to win and their investment over the past X number of minutes are suddenly reset. In an online multiplayer game there is further a social aspect of embarrassment and letting down their teammates. These parents don't realize what they are doing to their kids is the equivalent of margin calling one of their stocks to sell at a loss or suddenly being thrown off the field in the middle of a softball league match. It's pretty traumatic. The psychologists should have tried playing before regurgitating their prior findings. Parents trying to effectively regulate play behavior need to convey an understanding of their child's psychological investment and beneficial rewards of video gaming, then work with their child to show them that even positive rewards need to be regulated to lead a balanced life style. This can be helped by conveying similar episodes in the parent's own life, such as investment losses or overcommitment to the expectation of colleagues. Ultimately parents need to understand that their child is being exposed to a simulation of real world problems that they themselves often have trouble handling. They need to understand it's difficult, and the solution will only come with practice. On the other hand, this is actually opportunity for the child to get an early start on developing psychological skills that will make them more empowered and disciplined as adults.

How is this any different than telling a child to stop playing a sport and forcing them to leave. I've seen kids loose their minds when their parents tell them they have to go home. I don't get why we focus this on video games. This is true of any activity that you are engrossed in and get dragged away from.
Mhm, if I unplug my parent's device and they were in the middle of something either they were enjoying or was important, you're saying they wouldn't have the same reaction or worse?
Imagine if you were working really hard on a project like a massive puzzle and then someone knocked the puzzle onto the ground and then made you feel bad for being frustrated. That's what these people are doing.
A parent turning off a console is equal to a kid going up to their mother's cooking, flipping the dish she's been cooking for two hours, ask her why she's mad and just make yourself a sandwich for dinner.
I'm an adult, but If you would plug of my PC during hard boss fight, I would throw controller in your face. Imagine what your father would do if you plug of tv during an intense moment at soccer game. If you do this to an adult in the middle of a movie that they are watching and looking forward to, the adult will have the same reaction. Do this in the middle of a movie at a theatre - same thing. It’s not a child problem, it’s a human problem.

(after all, yeah ur right with dopamine but u don't say the whole thing :3). (btw make time control is more frustrating ...)
I think it’s easy to dismiss this video. honestly, though, both as a kid and young adult, I’ve struggled with addictions to video games and Internet. To the point where I can’t see myself not checking social media, for example, for a whole day without getting anxious or just plain bored. Instead of looking for a job, I’m on Rocket League or Apex Legends. For me, it’s escapism from absolutely everything. And it’s getting bad in my life, at least.
It's easy to dismiss this video because it's argument is dumb. This isn't anything special about videogames. It's the same reaction anyone would have if someone else rudely interrupts and destroys their work/progress.
So are playing sports, doing hands on activity, engaging stories/teaching, puzzles, ect. Video games are mainly entertainment, let's not make the stretch that video games are beneficial in that sense
@@lazarusblackwell6988 Of course it does, it's comparable to reading books or doing a puzzle. This is more like ripping the bookmark out of their book and tossing it in a messy pile where it cannot be found, or kicking an destroying their Lego creation without saying a word and walking away. You don't just turn it off..

I am seeking a video to show my kids about the concerns of playing too much but taking away the game suddenly like that only showed a problem with adults not the kids. Horrible.
There are not really many concerns, and blaming the adults in these situations are correct. They unplugged a console with a game you need to save. Think of it as if you were reading a book and the book mark was the save part. Someone takes your book mark out and shuts the book throws it away and you get mad right? This is what the adults are doing. You need to be a role model not someone your kids look at as a terrorist. The only concern i can think of is them not spending time with you. I suggest you play a nice game like Animal crossing or Minecraft with your kids. Minecraft costs $30 but i think its worth it. If you think there are other concerns I suggest you set a time limit of 3-4 hours a day.
Luckily my parents never did this to me as a kid they were never strict on how much time I could spend on video games even when I was a toddler playing on my parents Wii lol
0:24 nah that would be about the same reaction. Just imagine you were building a lego Death Star and when you are about to put on the last few pieces your mom threw a brick at it and broke it up completely just for a social media prank.
0:19 Yeah the thing is books and legos can be paused in between and then resumed. Video games have advanced greatly and you usually complete one or two tasks in the span of one session with few opportunities to pause and/or save in between. Jesus Christ as a gamer it’s insane how people fail to understand why having your game shut off in the middle of a two hour sequence with no saves is much more frustrating than someone taking your book or a Lego.
The comments section here has some really solid points but it kinda feels all over the place and slightly confrontational... Basically, a large percentage of video games don't really tend to autosave unless the game reaches some logical point like the start or end of a mission as that is easier on the memory and RAM. As such, shutting down the device suddenly means a lot of pretty limited time tends to get wasted for no apparent rhyme or reason. As such, anger is the quickest response to come to the surface... Plain and simple...
4:29 I'm not 100% sure but I'm pretty sure that one was an extremely hard boss in one game and took me about a half hour to beat, and that boss bar had almost zero health on it. I would have been extremely mad if someone pulled the plug on that (If i'm. right on that)
I identified the boss! It’s void termina, the final boss of the story mode in Kirby Star Allies. It’s in it’s bird(?) form, I’m not sure if it’s the last physical form or not, but after the outside phases you go inside void termina to defeat it’s core (with again multiple phases) I don’t remember finding this phase too difficult but it certainly is a challenge, even more for a young child like the one playing in the video. Also, the parent turned off the tv with the remote I think, and the switch is also a portable console, which means the child did not loose all their progress. The game was either still going or paused (I have a switch so I know how this stuff works, my switch battery died while I was playing and after charging it for a while the game was still going, though it was animal crossing so idk how it behaves for Kirby games), but if they died they would probably have to start from the beginning of the boss or the phase. I hope they got their progress back, in this case it’s easily recoverable :] I hope this was somewhat useful idk
That's the worst theory ever. No background data do support it. The reason kids act like that is because they are disrespected by the parents. If you would do the same thing to an adult, you would be smacked in the face. Respect your kids. Don't do anything to them that you wouldn't do to an adult.
Don't do anything to them that you wouldn't want to have done to yourself. Exactly right. I bet if I unplugged an adults computer while they were working on it, they would be just as upset as these kids.
What happens when someone is invested in something and you cut it off midway.. unable to go back to that moment to correct it. Think about a father watching their favorite team play a game in basketball or football. You turn off the tv that’s showing the live broadcast. What will happen? Since they are adults, they should be fine with it, right? They surely won’t get angrier then if you took a book away from them while they were reading it.
I have been playing Dozens of games and finishing all of them on numerous consoles throughout my 9years of gaming. I never had this problem. We gamers understand the value of our progress. They hold our precious memories. But everything has limits, we need to balance our game time or it would be unhealthy. Or have these type of problems that could ruin a long time of work.
Kids play games to feel more accomplished with something they love. Affecting their grades is a completely different topic. They get mad because they were working hard to achieve something they liked and taking it away would make anyone angry. Don't listen to these people 😁👍

Yes, my son cried when it was time to stop playing a game. So, since I know all the games he's playing, I establish a clear goal: "When you finish this level, let's turn off" or "Ok, last try, then, let's turn off". Taking something away in the middle of an action will make that reaction. Playing with toys is like creating movie. If I take a toy away during a "scene" he will scream his lungs out.

Why cant you be a psychologist

Same thing will happen if you unplug ur dads TV when he’s watching football, or if your mom is working on a document and you turn off the PC and they lose their progress, what’s gonna happen?
What’s really sad about it is that when you unplug a ps4 without turning it off your more than likely to lose data.
Video games are culture texts similar to books and movies, but in video games you have to put an effort consume them by gameplay. If someone ruins that effort, it's not strange they will be mad
Ok , grow up , little kid.
The problem isn't only that the kid is addicted, it's also because you turned off the device while they're playing.
If you do this to an adult in the middle of a movie that they are watching and looking forward to, the adult will have the same reaction. Do this in the middle of a movie at a theatre - same thing. It’s not a child problem, it’s a human problem.
It's not a problem. It's a justifiable reaction. The problem is the people doing this to others.
i'm not ok with this, If u make stop playing a child from a video game u don't just stop his game, u stop the entier thing he was building inside the game, so it's like when u make a project on your computer and u just put of the pc without saving anythings, it's the worse feel, and this is why the child react so bad ! same as an adult ...

Video games are hugely beneficial for brain development.
Let kids play their games but dont overdo it.
So are playing sports, doing hands on activity, engaging stories/teaching, puzzles, ect. Video games are mainly entertainment, let's not make the stretch that video games are beneficial in that sense

At least 2 of those kids responded quite well, much more mature than many adults.
This video is embarrassing. Everyone at wsj who saw this and still let it upload should be promptly fired.

0:19 Yeah the thing is books and legos can be paused in between and then resumed. Video games have advanced greatly and you usually complete one or two tasks in the span of one session with few opportunities to pause and/or save in between. Jesus Christ as a gamer it’s insane how people fail to understand why having your game shut off in the middle of a two hour sequence with no saves is much more frustrating than someone taking your book or a
Lego.

0:43 that's actually a good game but the hero he is playing...

I hope they got their progress back, in this case it’s easily recoverable :]
I hope this was somewhat useful idk
