I was going to show my mom this video but as soon as the lady said "binging is never good." I decided not to. My mom would ignore everything else and just use that one sentence against me
Maybe you should take that advice? Binging is indeed not good. I'm not pretending like I'm not doing it myself, but at least I understand that it's not very healthy so I don't disagree when people say it.
@STUPID TABLET yeah my mom was one of those only 30 min a day playtime growing up I’m like well not enough time to do anything with it so I’ma play outside
Avallac'h they don’t, a videogame can’t make you act out and commit violent acts. All it does is expose people to violence, which isn’t actually that dangerous on its own
I forgot to tell which games I play. I like very much AION and GW I tried B&S, not to my liking. I loved Diablo, not the last one tho. I never played WoW. :)
My wife also plays these games and I used to as well. When I played, I noticed that many older people played these games and were quite good at them. I believe it is the social aspect of these games that keep older people playing.
I am 64 and have been playing WoW for 15 years. Playing keeps me young and my brain nimble. I had 5 months of heavy chemotherapy 9 years ago. At the end of that 5 months I had some serious brain fog. I used playing video games to clear my brain and recover as much as possible, I believe gaming helped a lot.
Last summer, I took my friend’s son to our local shooting range. He is a high level COD player, so I thought he’d enjoy shooting a real gun. I handed him my .45 to see how he’d perform. To my astonishment, he hated it. He was actually terrified. He shot one mag then quit lol. Violent games don’t cause violent behavior. Edit: Thanks for all the likes. Gamers are Awesome! 😊
i got depression and when fortnite was at season 4 i picked it up and it got me out of depression in like a month. its kind of heartbreaking to see the game that saved my life slowly die to tryhards
That’s because this info comes from a biological male brain. Watch again and you’ll see it. However, I do agree that video games are not as they’re portrayed. Face it, most talks on this are from female brain perspective. I am female and have boys and I get it while other Mom’s judge.
What I learn from the Games I've Played: 1. Dark Souls: NEVER FUCKING GIVE UP 2. Deus Ex Series: Look Harder, There is always more solution than One 3. The Witcher: Value your Family and Friends 4. DOOM: Move Fast, Think Fast, React Fast, and get some Kickass Mewzeeecks 5. Skyrim: Be anything your heart and will tells you to be, but never forget who are you inside 6. Undertale: DETERMINATION
JSPumpkinKing for me, 1. english from harvest moon (I'm not from an english speaking country) 2. a lot of cooperations from Mobas (mostly dota 2), you can't just go on wihout your team, teamwork is needed. 3. hand to eye coordination from all fast paced games 4. literal war strategy from a game I can't remember the name of... 5. how economy works and how inflation affects a country in WoW 6. how to survive in a deserted island with only a pocket knife (has not happened yet) 7. how to spot lies from that detective game (something noire)
JSPumpkinKing well, they are also not quite wrong in a part... Video games are bad not because it makes you stupid or something... It's bad because it wastes time, and if you could've done something productive with that time, do it. Basically, you can't make a living by playing video games, but then again, from my personal experience, most of what people study at school are never neede in actual life, so... studying is no better. A little tip for someone in the internet that I don't even know, For as far as i know, there are 3 ways to continuing life... 1. (The one that can make you the happiest person or the person that lives on the street) try to earn money by playing those games... you can do youtube or make a website or something, but there is a catch, if you fail, you can't do anything... even facing your own family. 2. (The one that works if you can do it, also the most boring) manage your time, play games only like 2 hours max a day or even less, also don't stop at games, manage everything in your life. 3. (The one I did and is lucky enough to succeed) just go on as your life goes on... Maybe you'll find a hpbby and stopped gaming, maybe you learn to play saxophone and got a living from it like I did and still play games, anything could happen...
Showing this to my parents, wish me luck guys... Update: They said it's probably some "game advertisement" but then told me her points were pretty convincing, I guess it's a win?
I love her last point. As a game dev, the most common problem I see when academic staff develop games is they separate the learning and the fun instead of realizing that learning IS fun. Kids would rather fight a boss than do a test? Boss fights ARE tests goddammit!
Learning with consequences to your answers = video games. It doesn't matter what the consequence is.. even a time investment loss can trick your brain into wanting to learn.
Jason Henman im deeply triggered right now , if i happen to be in your class i would raise my hand and talk about why they skipped that part about ted talks ... im serious
teachers can be just a tool of government propaganda... it's very bad actually I mean they can teach you not to be a great person, they teach to be like others are... if you get what I'm trying to say. I'm from Russia and here's a lot of stupid prapaganda of current president and religion. :(

Finally, I thought she was going to talk about how shootings are connected to video games, but she spoke the opposite. Thank god, damn you boomers who run the media.
Positive sides from fps (first person shooter)/action games: 1. Better eye sight. (Can read prescriptions & resolve different levels of grey in a fog while driving) 2. Increases attention span. 3. Physically changes your brain (makes these part of the brain more efficient). Parietal cortex/lobe (to control the orientaion of attention) Frontal lobe (how you sustain/maintain attention) Anterior Cingulate (how you allocate & regulate attention & resolve conflict) 4. Better at switching from one task to another. Remember to engage in gaming with balance & moderation with time to reap its bennefits! :)
1. Vision: depends on the distance between user and the screen. Not play time. 2. "Attention": how do you define "attention"? Do you pay attention to what your beloved family members are saying, when you're in the middle of the game?
@@second_second_ do you pay attention what your family and friends talk to you in the middle of any action or activity you are doing? If so you aren't full attention on something or very good at multitasking. People play videogames in groups and use callouts, or even chatting so it's possible to do the same with your beloved family members it's just depends on how focused you are in task in the game. Any game to be clear. Sports is the same and it's actually dangerous to change attention from field to environment. Maybe videogames have more common in that case with sportgames. I mean our brain use the same logic. So when you children or loved one doing their hobby it's kinda bad idea to interrupt them. And yes videogames are hobbies, so be mindful.
@@second_second_ I pay more attention to them than say, while I'm trying to concentrate really hard to solve a calculus problem or play the piano. By your logic what does that say?
What videogames left me: I couldn't understand so learned English, I developed taste for computers so I became an engineer, I was depressed so I went deep into RPG and avoided suicide. Yeah I definitely recommend videogames, will improve more than your sight.
Well you would not get this cuz most of you don't play 2007 shooters. But thanks to video games now I can learn more numbers quicker because I play team fortress 2 and pipes and rockets do 100 damage but not one shoting everybody but crits can do from 14 to 300
@@alexanderluis5997 And I will add to this the attention problem mentioned in the video. I have that problem. Not necessarily *just* from games, but they are part of it..
*+marklvrd* Exactly. Like, why do you think people _just so happen_ to learn better when it's about something they enjoy? We've all been in that one class where the material was just so boring that we couldn't pay attention for more than 5 minutes. Then there was the other class that was the exact opposite. And _coincidentally,_ you did a better job in the class where you enjoyed the material you learned. _Isn't that strange?_
I would watch my 10 yr old play. Then I started to play, haven't stopped. I'm 67 now, still playing, best thing ever. Oh not hidden object, but Far Cry, Fallout, Skyrim, Hitman, Tomb Raider, Splinter Cell, The Last of Us, Deus Ex and so on. But the thing is being so great with how our minds effeciently work around the the problems that others can't ''those being non gamers'' is a sad comprehension in itself. Some are born to be great and others aren't and im not just talking about gamers but people in general who choose to disbelieve or just full on go into denial about these sort of things when there told about them, its real simple if no one believes in what your telling them, in the end it really doesn't matter. My dad was in an accident when teaching woodworking a few years ago. It blinded him in one eye, destroyed his coordination, made it impossible for him to focus on multiple things at once, he now misses the small details all the time (he used to never miss them), and he sometimes gets really depressed, because even with all the therapy he's had there's a good chance he will never be able to get back to teaching. The one thing his doctors told him would help a lot though? *V I D E O G A M E S*, action shooters in particular. People are starting to realize the positive effects that video games have one the mind. Unfortunately, my dad is anti-gaming and hates the fact that I play games a lot, and refuses to even entertain the mere idea of following his doctor's advice and pick up a video game. Honestly, he's also always stressing about not spending enough time with me, but I would love to play a good few matches of overwatch quickplay with him a couple times every week.
Hey why don't you tell him you'd love to spend quality time following doctors orders with him? :) Protips: Do it while you're sitting and hes standing keeping head down while maintaining eye contact shoulders slumped and with as high pitched and quiet a voice as possible without being weird, it'll make you seem more childlike and vulnerable and work on his Dad-Instincts. Good Luck.
Well first find your fathers preference of things irl, you said he taught woodworking? Well try starting him out on a building type game like Minecraft, Tetris, World of Goo, or some other simple game like that (some apps on the store can be great, and free) I do understand he might not be up to building games after the accident but they are simple, slow paced, and something he would be familiar with to first introduce him to video games, then maybe move on to something like Super Hot to introduce him to shooting and using the keyboard controls at certain timings and a slow paced learning environment to warm up to it and improve, then maybe go through tf2 first since hero abilities are a little most complicated, but then if he's liking it move on to some Overwatch (Might wanna start off vs AI for practice, and also our community is really toxic to new players)
Just like you can't trust "experts" that say bad things about what you like, you also can't trust "experts" that say good things about what you like just because it's what you want to hear. As a gamer myself I'd say they aren't a good thing unless you totally have your life together first. If you're a high school kid or lower that's fine, but if you are 19+ you should be playing them casually until you're settled into a job and have a serious girlfriend. Take this advice from someone who really fucked that all up.
Action video games might train your kids physically, but they won't go nearly as far as exploration/platforming games. Spyro, Crash, Prince of Persia, Bioshock, Resident Evil, Fallout, and Elder Scrolls all fit into this category. Games that make you observe your environment, react to conflicts, and even problem solve how to platform for ledges to higher points. Better yet; each game will always make you think twice, even though you've played several before it. Resident Evil has detail based problem solving: Remember where certain locked doors were, and return to them once you have the corresponding key items. Go from that to Spyro where you see a collectible sitting on a ledge, and you ask yourself "How do I reach that?" There's no key here, but it's problem solving all the same. Teach your kids to invent solutions to problems, not excuses. I believe games are a good way to approach that.
Yeah and Minecraft survival has related ‘survival tips’ It’s not like you can start whacking a tree and expect to get wood, but the principle is the same
Soulsborne games/Monster Hunter or any thing that really focuses on fighting difficult monsters and bosses makes you think of various ways to approach a problem and solve it too. (Dodging, counter-attacks, recognizing move set patterns and stuff.)
As someone who plays online coop shooters with custom maps I can confirm that people will whiz right by pressable buttons that are needed to advance through a level. I definitely received the benefit of platformers and collectathons as a toddler.
Gaming in violent video game worlds is a great way for me to vent without taking my anger out on a living person. Fallout in particular has been key to my healing since my father passed. Nick Valentine from Fallout 4 has the same character in many ways as my dad (passed this last June) and having him as a travel companion around the commonwealth is like spending the time with my dad that I couldn’t do in life. The world we live in is filled to the brim with trouble and all consequences in the real world are permanent but in games if you don’t like the outcome then just reload a previous save. Can’t stand when someone claims violence comes from games when violence comes from negative interactions with others. Many look for enemies in inanimate objects or others but the true enemy is within. Conquer that enemy en masse and the war will be over!!!
Games are vital to growth and evolution. Even animals play games. It's how you learn and improve vital skills. Video games are just the next evolution of the old games we used to play
Well they did say that video games are bad if you are addicted to them. It's like wine. It has health benefits if taken in moderation but can be dangerous to our health if we binge.

I am a gamer. Been playing ever since Atari and Intellivision. Although, I love this video, I already know that gaming is not a bad thing. I work all day, I come home and have dinner and most days I spend about 1-2 hours playing games. Mostly MOBAS, where you have to interact with team mates. I KNOW that it helps me relieve the stress from work and gets me into the moment. I’m not saying there aren’t other ways to do this. I also walk, hike, cycle and I play music in a band with my friends. It has also helped hand-Eye coordination, to a point where I notice the other men I work with at my age really lack this. I will never stop gaming
actually what she said is all true. but there are some bad condition if you over playing a game, if you play 10 hours straight per day which is all student - college people usually do. you will get your eyes minus because people eyes can be tired if they play too much and also lack social skill. but im also a gamer so im saying dont overdo it.

What contradicts this is that I am a high school straight A honor roll student. I do after school clubs, volunteer work, take ap classes but still got time to play video games. smh
Fun fact: When companies were first getting ready to market videogames, the target demographic were actually girls. The idea behind it was "Boys play outside, Girls play inside". Of course, this line of thinking is wrong, anyone can enjoy videogames, but hey, just something to know when somone tells you that its just "for boys".

Don't worry guys, as every year goes by stuff like this will become more and more common and accepted info. That's because for every old fart that dies today another person is born into a world where Video Games are the norm. Soon the gamer population will far outnumber the non-gamer population and Video Games will become an accepted form of art.
Crackers and Cheese games already are a form of art. I mean, in the end, someone had to make concept arts, models, program it all out and make it work. They are _interactive art_. Besides, videogames are protected by the first ammendment so yeah.
Unfortunately, there are actually many more people who can't afford the luxury of playing games, or considers them interesting even from a young age. And they pass down their views to their children regardless of media or influences. If a family is religious, or extremely spiritual, of course they will be strict on their kids to the point of warping their views.
Well you only see whatever experts the news wants you to see. But it is nice to see someone that has no hobby interest in video games who actually is respected in their field just come in and look at how video games effect us and just go "no really parents it's fine" for once.
I really appreciate the research-based conclusions that should help to change our perceptions of games and gamers, and I think that one of the most important points she makes is that "binging is never good" because, after all, reality is the only thing that's real, and while we can certainly gain benefits from games, it's crucial to keep perspective of what's most important.
No, honestly, ted talks are usually verbose, but lacking in information. It's obnoxious. They have to talk, assuming people are total beginners, always. That's why they never seem to actually dissect more complex topics, or discuss details. Instead, you just get some vague, broad-strokes message that's supposed to be enlightening, but almost never lives up to the title. So, in regard, to title, I'm pretty sure they are click-baiters through and through. Hence, your reaction.
I found in my experience what she said about multitasking in relation to games to be very true. When I first started driving, I thought to myself that checking my speed, gas, and whatnot while driving to be easier because it was like checking a health bar or ammo count. My parents had issues with my older sisters checking those (the one sister just wouldn't do it because she didn't want to move her focus, resulting in her speeding or going way under the limit, and the other would swerve whenever she checked in the first two months).
TheSkyHazCloudz i never checked my healthbar but i dios check my ammo count and frag count. Then what she demonstrated here about tracking multiple objects comes in handy even with games like Europa universalis where fighting a war in the HRE can be frustrating because so many little armies can end up clumping together and becoming a threat to your stack.
"I thought to myself that checking my speed, gas, and *whatnot* while driving to be easier because it was like checking a health bar or ammo count." Thanks for checking me..... but did you have to stare? (Shameless joke/plug)

same haha, sometimes when i switch lanes or make a turn my dad complains about me not looking if there was a car but in fact i have already checked multiple times aswell as regulated my speed and even looked for pedestrians who might cross the street while i turn

A little tip for someone in the internet that I don't even know,
For as far as i know, there are 3 ways to continuing life...
Jam Ham Time wish theres more ppl with your mindset IRL m8.

Positive sides from fps (first person shooter)/action games:
1. Better eye sight. (Can read prescriptions & resolve different levels of grey in a fog while driving)
2. Increases attention span.
3. Physically changes your brain (makes these part of the brain more efficient).
Parietal cortex/lobe (to control the orientaion of attention)
Frontal lobe (how you sustain/maintain attention)
Anterior Cingulate (how you allocate & regulate attention & resolve conflict)

Omg you've watched the video as well?

Well first find your fathers preference of things irl, you said he taught woodworking? Well try starting him out on a building type game like Minecraft, Tetris, World of Goo, or some other simple game like that (some apps on the store can be great, and free)
I do understand he might not be up to building games after the accident but they are simple, slow paced, and something he would be familiar with to first introduce him to video games, then maybe move on to something like Super Hot to introduce him to shooting and using the keyboard controls at certain timings and a slow paced learning environment to warm up to it and improve, then maybe go through tf2 first since hero abilities are a little most complicated, but then if he's liking it move on to some Overwatch (Might wanna start off vs AI for practice, and also our community is really toxic to new players)

Yeah and Minecraft survival has related ‘survival tips’
It’s not like you can start whacking a tree and expect to get wood, but the principle is the same
You can also include retro games like Sega Genesis or NES shooters, these requires a lot from your brain as well
Also The Division 1 and 2 !

I wish I can show this to my dad lmao, he thinks video games are a distraction to school work, that it is for boys and it rots my brain, but I've been playing a sneakily behind his back on my pc.

C H E R R Y my parents in their early 60s never knew how to even turn on a computer, let alone use the internet. For father had a smartphone for 5-6 years just used it for making phonecalls, granted again he barely knew how to search contacts. My mother for around 10 or so year had a flip phone till 2019 when that ancient relic finally broke and was forced to get a smartphone. Now I am always catching both of my parents watching youtube videos, just this morning (1AM) I went out into the kitchen, and everything was dark and all of a sudden I hear people talking, of course my father is watching youtube. I cant wait till they discover how to download apps and accidentally stumble upon one of those mobil games.

As a gamer I would love to believe this,
1.) but how big was the study group?
2.) did they compare tennis players to gamers or mentally handicapped to video gamers ?
3.) Who funded her job, The gaming companies who want the results to encourage gaming and only publish/tell us about the good results of their reasearch and none of the negatives?
4.) What aspects of cognition perception and attention does gaming influence negatively?
5.) The tests were done on computers ? hmm wonder who had an advantage of familiarity with the interface the tests were being carried out on.........?
6.) of course once you've done a task once a similar type of task later on once you've had time to think about it will be done more efficiently were the later tests really that different ?
7.) So short range vision is improved, what about long range vision ?
Was hoping she would actually mention/discuss the drug like addictive effect video games can have.

they are there own source. they work in the industry
Echo1Scout Oh, so I guess scientists don't have to provide sources to what they post as well. Cause, you know, they work in the industry, so opinion of each one scientist is an absolute truth.
An industry mainly funded by the corporations to only share results that are positive to their products not the public who the industy is supposed to be doing the research to protect. All Corps should have an additional safety reasearch tax that is paid to the public to do the funding seperately from the corps influences.

Digital Shrapnel Well obviously, but my point is that as it stands the majority of the population does not agree with you.
my mind.....blown.....

Daaaamn exactly what i thought.
TheSkyHazCloudz
i never checked my healthbar but i dios check my ammo count and frag count. Then what she demonstrated here about tracking multiple objects comes in handy even with games like Europa universalis where fighting a war in the HRE can be frustrating because so many little armies can end up clumping together and becoming a threat to your stack.
"I thought to myself that checking my speed, gas, and *whatnot* while driving to be easier because it was like checking a health bar or ammo count."
Thanks for checking me..... but did you have to stare? (Shameless joke/plug)

TheSkyHazCloudz I imagine them being like pressing WSAD keys to move around and space to jump. After just a few minutes you can do it without thinking about it.
same haha, sometimes when i switch lanes or make a turn my dad complains about me not looking if there was a car but in fact i have already checked multiple times aswell as regulated my speed and even looked for pedestrians who might cross the street while i turn
