Steam Deck OLED vs Legion Go: The Hardware Nobody is Talking About

  • We’ve had the Lenovo Legion Go in our sights for a couple of weeks now. With its beautiful 8.8” QHD display powered by the Ryzen Z1 Extreme, innovative controls, and whispers of a repairable design, we genuinely thought that the Steam Deck may have finally met its match.
    Then out of nowhere, Valve released an upgraded Steam Deck with an OLED panel, a new 6-nanometer processor, and a bunch of repairability upgrades! We couldn’t resist. We might have two repairability heavyweights in the teardown lab and we’re going to pit them against each other to see who's more likely to walk away after a good beating.

    as someone who accidently stripped one of the phillips screws of my steamdeck when upgrading the storage, the torx screws are in my opinion not a bug but a feautre... Yes, a phillips driver might be more common, but usually they are too big anyways and if your in a household that got those small precision phillips drivers, you probably also got torx drivers somewhere...

    My opinion about phillips vs torx screws is this. Although it may be true that most house holds have phillips screw drivers. often time they are too big for working with computer parts and as mentioned, they are more prone to stripping (Especially when you are using large drive on a small screw) Torx drivers should be in everyone's tool kit when opening up electronics.

      You're WAY WAY more likely to overdrive or overload the bit and the screw w a torx, and since an overwhelming majority of people don't have a torque limiting clutch its a much better option to go with phillips.

That said Gulikit has upgraded hall effect thumbsticks for the old LCD Steamdeck. I imagine they will have upgraded ones for the OLED Steamdeck as well, if they don't already.

    I have a legion go myself. But I will never remove the controllers, so I wonder if it would be possible to remove all the parts that are in the controller. I also had an LCD and between the CPU bug being patched and the screen upgrade, it's just so much nicer. Refresh rate being synced with the frame limited is just excellent (being that the refresh rate is automatically adjusted to whatever frame limit you set it to). WOTR even has native Steam input now and plays really smoothly for a CRPG. Even Elden Ring looks like it runs more smoothly. Using a monopoly to fight another monopoly seems like a better plan than less than 1% of the population trying to fight said monopoly by convincing people to not support said monopoly. Epic could still release a launcher for the Steam Deck and help port comparability for games. Yet, they haven't made one and want to talk about fighting Valve's monopoly while selling games which have Linux ports without access to said Linux port or a system to play the game easily, Proton. I'll gladly support Epic if they ever stop doing Linux dirty.

Remember when Microsoft wanted to pull an Apple and try to gate-keep their platform so they could charge everyone for programs sold on it? Lenovo's offerings are a wait and see for me, as with the ROG. If they give good support for a full life cycle of the device, I might consider a v2.
    The problem with these other brands and their Deck competitors is that they have no where near the goodwill that Valve has built up and with how finicky these devices are and how software dependent they can be, it's a big gamble to go with ASUS or Lenovo even though I do desperately want that 20-30% better performance.
    They're big brands that don't have the best track record with it comes to product support or quality assurance. Valve, on the other hand, has a reputation that affords them something close worship from most PC gamers. It's just easier to buy a product from Valve, because you're sure you're in good hands.

They revived the handheld pc trend in 2016 but now all their products are really expensive so when the steam deck came out they went super competitive because of how cheap the steam deck is in comparison so they made a bunch of UA-cam videos comparing their devices to the steam deck always dissing it and they, a legitimate company (from China though so this all makes sense in a second), made a statement saying "youll wanna buy a gpd cause your gonna want windows to pirate games anyways" and everyone was laughing over that for months. I kinda feel bad for gpd, their stuff is pretty cool but now they probably lost more than half of their business, i have a gpd pocket.. its really slow though cause its from like 2017

    Why does EVERY Steam Deck OLED teardown skip the part where you have to disconnect the ribbon cable that runs along the bottom of the battery? While everything else may be an improvement over the old LCD version, needing to disconnect at least one side of a ribbon cable to remove the shield really isn't good. Those connectors aren't designed for repeated disconnects.

    What's worth noting is that there are quite a few reports of Steam Deck OLED Screens arriving with dead pixels. Whether this points to a bigger issue or it's just another case of only people with problems actually posting remains to be seen I guess.

    Steam Deck will just work, almost hassle free relative to what is to be expected since launch. Legion is a major power vs convenience argument, the legion does not have the VALVE design in mind. Valve has spent years since SteamOS just making it work and it shows throughout. Legion is more geared towards power users or people who are tech literate. Good teardowns!

    • @piratesmvp
      @piratesmvp 3 місяці тому

      The Legion Go is also geared towards people who want to play non-Steam games on their device. This is the part that a lot of Steam Deck users are too dismissive of. SteamOS is very user-friendly, but having to install and configure Proton to get other games to work negates the "convenience" benefit of it. Power users like me would have no issue, but the average tech-illiterate gamer is not going to want to mess around with installing ProtonDB. Also, EA has become so heavy handed with their anti-cheat measures that you still can't even run Madden 24 on SteamOS. So, there is a benefit for average gamers in having a device that runs Windows.

      It's mostly about accessibility for the average user. There's no doubt that other screw designs are more durable and resistant to wear but the trade off is how available those drivers are to the average person. It's often taken for granted for those of us that have access to a fixed blade Torx in various sizes to get to hard to reach screws but most would-be DIYers don't have that.
      Nothing against Torx of course. If it continues to become the standard then that might turn out to be a good thing.

    • @Tom--Ace
      @Tom--Ace 6 місяців тому +1

      Torx strips just as easily, it is not the screw design but the metal hardening.
      Try using a Torx 5 to undo a Torx 6, you'll hate Torx for its inability to take different size drivers.
      Whereas most Philips screws are stripped because someone used a driver several sizes too big or small - which would strip Torx much more easily

    • @jinx20001
      @jinx20001 6 місяців тому +1

      @@Tom--Ace thats not true, torx dont cam out as easily as philips by design. There are just more contact points within the screw which means supporting higher torque and increasing contact angle. Its true that most people mess up philips by using the wrong fitting tool but thats less likely to happen with torx by quite a wide margin i would say.
