    It being a windows handheld also means that if you already pay for PC Game Pass for your desktop, the Legion Go natively supports those games too. That's a big library of games I would have to buy separately on steam if I wanted to play on the steam deck. You could install windows on the steam deck, but then you know the performance cieling is going to be worse as well. The Legion Go just made more sense to me in that regard.

    Appreciate the honest take. Curious to hear how it all compares out once you’ve put some hours into the Steamdeck OLED, considering all the buzz its upgrades have generated.

      I have personally tried to game on the Steam deck and find the screen size is brilliant for indie games (just like the Switch) but when i try to play AAA TV style games then i fail to see things in the distance.
      Maybe it is just me getting old.

    Hi. Thanks for the review.
    I have some questions:
    -If not traveling with the "joycons" but a regular Bluetooth joypad (the ones compatible with Pc/Switch/Android you can easily find in Amazon), can you access the Legion Go interface? (the kind of ish dashboard similar to ROG Ally and steamdeck that allow you to make changes in power consumption, settings, etc)
    I read everywhere that the only way to acces the interface is using the buttons on the joycons but I m not sure...
    -I also read/heard that the LG can be a bit noisy in high wattage mode, what about low wattage mode?
    -Does it have. a turbo mode when plugged in, like the Asus ROG?
    Thanks if you can answer.

    So I've said this before and I'll say it again, games optimized for Windows that work on SteamOS are not "less optimized". Here's why: The games themselves are built on top of a graphics API, and the possible APIs are OpenGL, DirectX, or Vulkan. Where on Windows the games run natively, on SteamOS the games run under Proton. Proton is a lightweight shim and windows-like environment that translates whatever graphics API the game was built for to pure Vulkan calls. The actual overhead in doing this is virtually non-existent, meaning that, on the same hardware, the games will run about the same or better in a proton context as they do in a Windows context (because effectively, they are running much the same way they would be on Windows... just against Vulkan instead of DirectX). Steam also helps reduce any possible stuttering by shipping games with precompiled shaders, where as Windows doesn't do this on its own.
    If you want a reason to use Windows at all, performance optimization shouldn't be a deciding factor, because it is not an issue on SteamOS. The main thing you really should be thinking about is what games you want to play and if those games run on your device of choice.

    • @AyaWetts
      @AyaWetts 5 місяців тому +4

      just for clarification... Proton handles a lot of typical Windows calls, its forked off Wine. Graphics wise though, it uses dxvk (DX9 - 11) and vkd3d (DX12+) to handle DirectX to Vulkan. Wine uses these libraries as well, but they are technically separate projects and can be used in other software, not just Proton/Wine... Intel even uses dxvk with their Windows drivers on their newer ARC GPUs to handle older DX9-11 titles in Vulkan.

    • @deathtenk
      @deathtenk 5 місяців тому +1

      @@AyaWetts this is true. Since all of that stuff is packaged into proton (wine and the translation shims) as the system that handles running the game it's effectively no different from running the game on windows via vulkan. All I'm getting at is that performance really isn't a concern in that context because it is no different from running it natively. The most major limiting factor is heavy handed DRM that won't work in that context.

    • @AyaWetts
      @AyaWetts 5 місяців тому +1

      @@deathtenk Yeah, Steam Deck isn't limited, the drivers are good. Not everything is the same though. I went with AMD in my desktop just because of open source drivers, and gaming on my 7900XTX is like 70% to 90% the frame rate I can get on the same system in Windows. In a Laptop I have with a RTX 3080 though, that thing is like exactly the same speed. The AMD is just drivers being improved... it wasn't even able to run games in Linux or the few that worked were less than half speed when I first got it early in the year. Hopefully by the time its 1 year old the drivers will run as good as in Windows. I know nvidia has propriety drivers, but I think I still may go back to them next time just for performance difference. It does seem the older RDNA2 in the Steam Deck doesn't have any driver issues though. I'm wondering the difference on something like the Legion Go since its RDNA3 based, and the drivers haven't had as long to develop and mature.

    • @deathtenk
      @deathtenk 5 місяців тому +1

      @@AyaWetts well there's a bunch of random factors that could be contributing to performance loss on your linux box. For one Wayland vs. XWayland vs. X11 can make a big difference performance wise. I found wayland gives me the best results on AMD but not Nvidia. Also on the Steam Deck shaders are precached and shared across Steam so no shader compilation is necessary. On a random linux machine those shaders need to be compiled at runtime (since the hardware target is unknown) and that can contribute to performance loss.
      I think the main thing that the steam deck has going in its favor is the top to bottom control that Valve has over its development and distribution. This allows them to optimize things across the stack. Also like you said it has really mature driver support.

I had extra accessories for the steam deck already from the original and save money there. For my use it works for me at the moment. Dual-Trackpads + Steam Input/Configuration adds so much to the experience of gaming, which I feel really goes unnoticed/unmentioned by many that cover the device. The usability these things can enable is next level, like playing RTS games which would be unfeasible on other devices because of the limited amount of input options. FPS is one aspect of gaming and the LegionGO wins there, but feeling comfortable playing and interacting with UI, and many more things are much more important to me.

      I absolutely love it! Setting it up was a little bit difficult on my end just being new to it. But once I got over that It was an incredible experience. I like the large screen the graphics looked great. When you power it off, it turns on very quick.
      When I got it at Best Buy they have a 15 day return policy so you could always get it. Try it out and if you don’t like it, return it.

      The battery holds up really well but that alao depends on what kind of games you are playing. AAA games i get about 2 hrs and 35 mins of play without being plugged in smaller games i get about 5-6 depending on how much i push it. The UI sucked at first but the update it all the time and each tine it gets better. Windows is just windows i mean could be better could be worse but id rather have it over Linux cause of compatibility issue with atuff on the steamdeck that uses Linux @jsnsnssnnsn

    I appreciate your videos they are very informative and straightforward and i get that you need clickbait titles (since you also told in another video how the steam deck oled is the best handheld on the market) as any other youtuber. BUT, this said at the beginning I wanted to buy the Go as I am a daily windows user with my laptop (a Legion laptop btw), but I went for the steam deck oled and my opinion on these five points are:
    - FPS mode: i don't get what's the point unless you don't have a laptop? i mean if you must to play on a table for that you can literally play with a laptop and you have a real mouse and bigger screen.
    - Windows? i mean yeah for certain things like installing other launchers it's a smoother operation but all the downsides just sink down that advantage. SteamOS gives you an incredible gaming experience: it's simple and straightforward like a console, it's super well optimized and efficient, you have steam input which is the best thing ever happend. Having a tailored linux gaming-oriented operating system overcomes any windows benefit. And you mentioned that "some games are better optimized for Windows". Maybe you don't know how proton actually works.. because you're basically running games with windows 10 (and it's not emulation), only very few games are linux native.
    -Performance: well here yeah is more of a personal thing I guess but if I want to play AAA games I just better off playing it on a nice dedicated gpu (my laptop has a RTX 3070) on locked 60 fps. AMD Ryzen Z1 extreme is nice but nowhere near an actual gaming PC. So.. if indies or low demand games are better be played off on handhelds in the first place.. then Steam deck OLED has the edge with the oled screen, better battery life, better weight and better ergonomics.
    - Screen? i disagree, OLED is better. And the color accuracy you were talking about is just better on OLED. Also with oled monitor is slightly bigger because of less bezel. And it's already BIG. I mean look at the switch... and for the resolution: 1600p is pure gimmick, there's no way you run games at that resolution. Same thing for 144 Hz. The 90 Hz of the OLED are already very incredible and super fluid and I doubt you can see the difference you were talking about when comaparing to LCD oled. I had the same sensation when playing indie games on my oled coming from my laptop: better reaction times at 90 Hz.
    -Productivity: you're better off connecting it to a monitor in the first place, so all your arguments come down. And you can just install windows on steam deck on some couple hundreds of GBs of a 1TB micro SD card. Drivers are already provided by valve so I don't see the thinkerings.

    - Oled screen colors & HDR is kinda really pretty
    - Special Steam commands (steam zoom, steam keyboard)
    - Trackpads with the crazy steam controller customisation.
    For FPS games I personally think you should do that on a PC with a proper keyboard and mouse and bigger screen.
    Also "Productivity" is kinda weird on handheld. Even a phone feels better.
    P.S.
    Nice video by the way.

      More for your list;
      -Steam Deck is like £230 cheaper than the Legion Go, which could buy you like 20-40 games to actually play on the Deck.
      -Better support for older titles due to compatibility filters that Windows doesn't have.
      -Better console-like software experience for a more plug and play.
      -Emudeck for Steam Deck is far further along than it is for Windows.

    Well, considering that the legion go has a 8c/16t processor faster than the Ryzen 7 5800x at 30 watts it´s just mind blowing, that is a full on workstation processor more than capable of doing cgi, renders, video editing and vfx.
    Only caveat would be cuda cores for some work but you can get a Egpu attacched and voila, nuts!

  • @Steelninja77

    Nah Even after legion go launched I went and bought a ROG Ally to upgrade my steamdeck. and could not be happier. I have whacked a 2 terabyte drive in it and it's revision 8 so the SD card reader is fine. I love it and I love the look and feel of holding it. and it blows me away with starfield at 1080p ultra and elden ring maximum settings 1080p. I even turned RT shadows on medium and it still ran fine.I don't run it like that though. I know the legion go has the same z1 extreme. I just prefer the way ROG ally looks. on the ROG ally when fps drops below 30 like on steamdeck it doesn't feel half as bad. less input lag. No crackling sound.

    I think the sheer selling numbers proof you wrong.
    What is a handheld good for if you need a power cord stripped onto it? It is the same story as with modern gaming laptops. Simple the wrong direction. And the longer PC follows this route the more market share they will lose to apple and steam. These two companies have understood what is going wrong and corrected it. ASUS is also turning the ship already. But with the drag of nvidia its hard to move.

    I Love the videos but honestly this one feels like reaching. I get the FPS for sake of performance but built in mouse shouldn't be a point if you're going to game on the go but put it on a table to use a mouse then just get a laptop. if you're going to hook it up to a monitor then get an egpu then it's the same thing just get a laptop because with a monitor this thing and an egpu plus keyboard then it's going cost you at minimum $1200 then you have to take battery into consideration. the only reason for getting this over the steam deck is performance and a bigger display. because if you're going to make the case for a shooter on the go and talk about PC then PC is the only way to so it just leads back to a laptop.

    I really enjoyed the Legion Go, but ultimately the loud fans, it heating up pretty bad on the back (I have big hands and I touch the tablet part) and it being windows based is what turned me off from it.
    The biggest and undisputed reason why the Steam Deck will always win over the competitors is software support. We simply don’t know how long will the Go or Ally be supported for, whereas the Steam Deck will be supported indefinitely.

    I have tried both. But my reasoning for choosing the SD OLED is:
    - Cost is 65% of the Legion Go in my country (Sweden)
    - I value portability and battery a lot, SD wins by a mile
    - the fan is a lot louder in the Legion
    - Even though I mostly use headphones, when I don’t the speakers are bad on the Legion.
    - I’m a PC gamer, but I just enjoy the SD Linux OS a lot better for the usage. I know the Legion is kinda new and updates are coming, but the current software is a big minus.
    And the last, and maybe the most important: the feeling and handles are feeling better on the SD. The screen on the Legion Go is so beautiful but at this point I rather prefer a gaming laptop with controller.

    These devices are NOT meant to be used as Laptops/Desktops... I will just say this and stop ;) I will give you just ONE Reason why the Steam Deck is better vs any other handheld: Battery Life!
    No.4: You did not see the OLED model which is fair ;) But that screen alone is another counter-argument to why you should buy the SD Oled vs literally anything else ;) Looking forward to the OLED display Review ;)
    No.5: STOP with the PC comparison! Your 200$ Laptop is a lot better than any of these devices for "Productivity" tasks :)) At least you get a dedicated Keyboard/Trackpad and bigger screen to boot so you don't need to use a Microscope to read things ;))
