How to Wet Sand a Water Mark Leaf Stain Black Paint

  • This is a black E39 M5 that I restored in a full day. However, I decided to work the trunk last because it had water marks and "Bird Poo" stains burned in. (At this point in the job I was completely exhausted but wanted to get it on camera as I've had a bunch of questions about how to remove this type of damage from viewers.) Also, I'm trying to prove a point that a microfiber cutting pad can remove 2500 grit...which is CRAZY! Normally, I would wet-sand the panel to 3000, 4000, and even 5000 before attempting to remove with a microfiber pad. At this point, I'm testing the cutting power of the pad to learn how strong this particular pad was. (Normally, a wool pad would be used for ease and speed in this case) Remember there are 3 levels of water stains. This was level 3 or the worst stage. Level 1 is when you leave the car outside in a quick sun shower (or sprinkler) and it can be wiped off with spray wax. Level 2 is when you need to use spray wax and a clay bar to remove the contaminants. Level 3 is when you have to level the paint (wet sand or compound) to remove the stain. Hope this helps! -L

+Sigrafix a quick fix. Often some type of Teflon or something quite like it. It's a kind of wax u use maybe after some trips in the summer when your car isnt dirty but maybe just some dust in it

Sho Nuff I use a magic eraser on it then orbital and complete compound then best of show wax and it leaves they paint wet and deep looking. It's basically fine sand paper just less aggressive.

MrStanger, thanks for the advice. Like most things, there is more than one way to accomplish a specific outcome. On black paint, I try to avoid using a wool paint because I dont like to switch to 2 or 3 different machines when I can get it done with 1. I was also testing the cutting power of the microfiber cutting pad to see how much grit it could remove. Thanks again for watching. Stay in touch. -L

Let me start by saying wow!!!! That BMW M5 looks fantastic. I have so much appreciation in what you do. I'm an enthusiast and I will tell you that it takes a lot of time so I believe when you say it took you 10 hours. I have a Flex Rotary and I'll tell you.. I wash my car, clay, Polish, sealant, and Wax my car and it takes me like almost 4-5 hours to do all of that..so when I hear you say 10 hours .. Man that takes the cake.. I love the end result. I'm really know thinking about getting the DA.

This is great Larry- especially cause I've been having a tough time with the paint on my E39 M5. I've been detailing cars for quit awhile now, ( not for a living though) I have some odd info to tell you, I would use a gloves when working with polish/ Glaze, within the years of working with these polish compound I have come across some that on the back label say " Do not touch may cause cancer " and actually, I just bought some cutting compound, and it says that on the back label. I can send you a pic if you like. Anyway stay safe. Happy Holidays.

As somebody already said earlier, I'm really curious about your polishing and cutting compounds. The way you simplifiy using as little products as possible (you have ONE window cleaner, ONE type of wax, and so on) Is really good for the ones that are still learning. Nowadays I use generally Meguiars products but I get kind of lost between all the options to use. So I'm really looking forward for you to show us your compounds and releasing them in your online shop. Channel definitely subscribed.

What's funny is that the "rock solid" paint on those E39's is only rock solid until you leave it in the sun, and then it peels like crazy. Here in Arizona it's rare to find a black E39 that doesn't have terrible, peeling clear coat.

For most cars, you really only need to use a DA. It's the really thick clear coat you would want to use a Rupes or Flex on. (They're like Hybrid DA's) All you would do in this case is just sand the scratch, compound, polish and protect. You probably could even sand and then compound by hand if you wanted and polish by hand, but it is still better to use a DA.
So, yes this would def. work with a DA. Like 99% of detailers use DA's.

love your videos, from New Zealand...just one question.Do you also wet sand under the door handles or areas where the buffing machine can't go? Or how do you make those inaccessible parts as good as the rest of the polished car?

These videos are VERY educational. I have a suggestion, and I think a lot, a lot of people would love to see it. But, you know how commercials promote their wax to make a DULL, DULL, DULL car that has sat for year look brand new? . . Maybe you could shoot a video like that! I think it would be a wonderful marketing tool for your products, as well as it being educational!

Hey, unfortunately...I dont have a miracle answer. It's just a steady Regimen of properly washing and adding layer after layer of Paint Sealant, and that will make it easier to clean. Meaning the dirt is less-likely to stick. But I'm not suggesting you wont get dirt. Kinda like wearing a raincoat in the rain. It protects you to some degree (meaning its better than not wearing one) but you always still seem to get wet no matter what you do. I wish I had a better answer, but its the truth..errrrrr

How fine? You'd have to finish at 2500 or 3000 to have a shot at it. And have a strong compound. but its possible for sure...

Just want to say a HUGE thank you to Larry at Ammo NYC for helping me get over my fear of using sandpaper on my Porsche. Please see how I have done if you get a moment. I used 1500 grit, Meguires Ultimate Compound and Dual Action Harbor Freight polisher. Thank you again!
