They set him up to fail by moving his time slots, because they couldn't overcome his popularity otherwise. That Farrakhan interview is apart of history. Arsenio is legendary nonetheless.
I was a fan. I loved seeing D'Angelo live on his show. But I was really a fan when Arsenio had a segment about a dude who weighed 600 lbs. Arsenio called him up on the phone and told the guy that we (he and his audience) were rooting for him in his quest to lose weight and regain his health. So empathetic... so soulful. Arsenio, an original!
You can watch Hall now and laugh just at the fashion and the way he talked. And say, "I can't believe people talked and dressed that way." Totally dated. You could watch old Carson and Letterman clips and they could have aired yesterday and you'd never know they were 40 years old.
Yeah, this is stupid, nobody wants to know about his first run, that explains itself. What happened with his second run where he lasted only about 2 months, and had Prince on all the time!! I can tell you I think that he was going off the rails and doing like racial and violent gang slapstick... And I believe that's why they yanked him!!!!!!!! Cuz the millennials was all snowflakes by this time.
The Arsenio Hall show captured that moment in popular culture like no other. The fashion, music, guests all came together for a perfect hour every night. It’s crazy to think that all these years later nothing has come close to matching it.

@@acewillingham The way they treated him the second time around....was bullshit. How you going to have him announce a second season and then cancel it,a few days later...
Great point in comparison but keep in mind at the time of the Farahkan interview that he was under highly scrutinization because Libya’s Momar Khadafi offered Farahkahn a billion dollars and the government told him if he would accept the money he would be considered a enemy of the state and be arrested and then to be interviewed was to much power
Arsenio was my favorite talk show. The man was just damn good at it, and enjoyed doing it. You could tell. My favorite memory was one time he was giving his band leader a hard time for driving a tired old car. Arsenio said "Why don't you get yourself a nice car?" The band leader replied "You never know how long these shows are going to last." The audience went nuts and Arsenio just about fell over laughing.
I'm a black dude who plays guitar and I can't tell you how excited I was as a kid to see black artist from so many different genres of music, like rock 🎸 and from so many different fields of entertainment, politics, etc. Arsenio had the black Rock N Roll band "In Living Color" performing on his show. It was the first time in my life, I've ever seen black dudes playing rock music. I was so excited. He also had the black Rock N Roll band Fishbone, on his show. I loved it 😁 I didn't know who Farakahn was untill the Arsenio Hall show. Older folks knew who he was, but most young kids like myself didn't.

As a kid growing up in the 90s Arsenio was an institution. He would come on right before the Star Trek TNG reruns so I would stay up and watch. He had guests that appealed to young people like pro wrestlers, hip hop artists, edgy comedians. Carson and Letterman was like a show that my parents would watch.
The ARSENIO HALL SHOW was truly epic. It was EVERYTHING. I wonder if he had switched to a daytime talk show for his 2nd show run, would he have captured and captivated the audience. Maybe he still can, even now. Possibly linking with Byron Allen now could give "us" a voice.
I remember I use to beg my mama to allow me to stay up and watch The Arsenio Hall Show. We’d go to school the next day and talk about the performances and interviews; the 90’s was a great time to be alive.
A talk show that could get the elusive Michael Jackson (the largest entertainer in the world). Eddie Murphy, Mike Tyson, Ali, Bill Clinton, Ophra, Mc Hammer, and just about every famous MTV personality from the late 1980s-90s. But it suddenly gets cancelled because of "ratings"? There have been dozens of shows that had poor ratings but became network staples because the powers that be put marketing and advertising behind them. John Stewart was not really funny when he first started and Leno had a horrible show that did not pick up until a few years after he started. But...Hall's show is moved around and cancelled for "ratings"?
@Tina Butterfly nah Tyler Perry is a fucking boss, they can't cancel him. Dude is worth like half a billion. He built his own studio, all type of shit.

When a person's investments turn sour, you pull up your financial stakes & you invest elsewhere. Take a step back & see where AH's choice of guests focused: on who was popular at the moment. Popularity is fickle & fleeting. Audiences who choose to be entertained by such things often are restless in trying to satisfy their fix & will focus on the next "best" thing. We will always love and appreciate you Arsenio Hall!!! You were truly an inspiration! I thought Arsenio's show would be around forever like the rest and he would grow old as a host.
Arsenio Hall always had twice as many viewers as Letterman, so the local networks artificially and deliberately cut down Arsenio's ability TO BE WATCHED by his viewers by putting him on at different times or not carrying him altogether. He still went out with the highest ratings and at the peak of his show and career. I have never seen such a concerted effort to destroy the career and the show of a man who was making money hand over fist for theses racist fools. Now that's hate for ya.

I thought those guys were lame. I remember as a kid wondering why are all these white people laughing for, because their jokes were horrible. They were not funny t all. I think Leno was funnier than Carson, but not by much. Other than Arsenio, Letterman was the better of the two.

Leno was okay in monologues, bad as a host. Letterman in his prime years 80s killed in monologues, was solid as a host. He became average when Leno got the job over him. Arsenio was the coolest host ever, though his monologues were hit or miss. I still miss his show the most!
I remember the Arsenio Show. It was an amazing show because it was like a concert every night. It definitely changed the late night game. When Jay Leno took over the Tonight Show - it literally BOMBED every single night in the ratings. So one can not blame a lack of ratings on the demise of the Arsenio Show. The network just killed the Arsenio Show because they could.
Anthony C Fletcher. It sure was the network that caused issue with Arsenios show. They kept bumping him to a later time too. Why is it some always try to get in the midst of people of color. What is the issue if he invited Mr L Farrakhan. I thought they wanted variety. Anyway I hope for the best for Arsenios and others in similar situation. God bless.
@@auldinejohnson3213 True dat he was just hipper that the other shows and the fact that a black man was leading in the main time slot in the evening reaching a big diverse audience didn’t sit well with the overseerers. Side note hat was the Joan Rivers show and he started guest hosting because I think she was going on to other things or they were phasing her out but that’s how the Arsenio Hall show started.
Why would the powers that be put him on to begin with, have success and then time slot him to sabotage his show? A show they green lit? He was losing viewership and it was no longer profitable. Period. His 2nd attempt at a comeback confirmed that people weren't checking for him anymore. His show ran it's course.

@Israel Rosario Jr because his show was the blueprint into making other tonight shows emulating style like how they did Living Single with Friends research it along with every other black entertainment that the white industry steal reaping the benefits of success
I lived through those times. The reason the Arsenio show ended is because he became associated with the late 80s and very early 90s (big shoulder pads, colorful suits, high top haircuts on black guys, Vanilla Ice, Andrew Dice Clay, Iraq War, the last gasp of hair metal bands, Eddie Murphys prime years, etc.) and he just didn't make sense in a "grunge rock" world with muted colors, a popular president, and a desire to move away from the loud fluorescent 80s feel. Everyone could feel that the times had changed. He was part of a certain time.
*Actually, he reminds everyone of the '90s.* The Arsenia Hall Show _started late '80s,_ but ran through early '90s _(90,91,92,93,94)._ He has that 90's feel to him still, but it's the lineup of all those other Late Night Talkshows that affected his viewership: Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Fallon, Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel, David Letterman... etc. That in addition to the *_Network wanting to dictate which direction_* Arsenio's Show should go *_caused a Fall Out so the executive producer stepped down due to creative differences_* on what would've really made the show stand out. Then the Network canceled the show.
I wasn't around when _Arsenio_ was in its first incarnation, but the second time I tune in almost every night. The second time around it was off to a solid start and ratings, and because of the comeback, It was initially renewed for a second season until CBS decided to reverse the decision overall. This was right before Fallon took over _The Tonight Show_ and had a big premiere week. Just watching random clips, interviews and reading articles Arsenio was ahead of his time in late night. Similar to what Don Cornelius did for _Soul Train_ and the _Soul Train Awards_ highlighting the best in black entertainment, Arsenio was the exact same way. I personally believe that booking Farrakhan as a guest is what caused the ultimate end of the show, and not due to low ratings as widely believed. Even when the show itself was fading out and other late night show hosts were open to allowing more diverse musical guests (R&B and hip hop) aside from pop music to perform, the show is entrenched in black American culture as well as hip hop culture. And to think it started with Nat King Cole 35 years prior (at a time when it was unheard of and likely impossible to be unapologetically black) to the day Arsenio broke through on late night, it can never be duplicated. Who could honestly do that in 2019?
Its always a smart ass disagreer behind you who could of write their own book comment of their own in their comment section independently instead they wanna get up under another person comment section and write books about their beliefs like wtf GET YA OWN SECTION MFR and have people like and agree under stop throwing shade on da next man spot becuz you need light off da next person wack af.THE DARK TITAN THANOS needs sum light bet you swallow too after pulln out male attention online foh.

I enjoyed his show. Arsenio defined a new era in late night tv. I wish him well. I still remember fondly his drive from Cleveland to L.A. and the things that make you say hmmmm
Arsenio hall was in a league of his own. His ratings would have stayed up if they didn't change his time slot on the 1st show. When he came back it was like he never left. They did him wrong. He should still be on. Those other shows are trash.
I used to watch it as a kid and was so happy to see the show come back bringing Bone Thugs-n-harmony on the show. I was so disappointed both times and never knew why they took it off. His shows was always great to watch. I'm sure there's millions that feel the same and want the show back.
I just find it funny, at the very start of the Farrakhan episode, Arsenio skipped his usually monologue and gave a talk about how people warned him against bringing Farrakhan on (people behind the scenes and other celebrities). He said "I got to do what I got to do." When Farrakhan came out, Farrakhan himself talked about how "they" threatened to take Arsenio's show off the air if he came on. A few weeks later, the show was canceled. Then when Arsenio came back in 2013-14, the show was doing well. In February, Jay Leno came on to announced that the show will be renewed for a second season. Near the close of the season, he made a joke about how having Farrakhan on had gotten his show canceled but every time he said Farrakhan's name they would jokingly beep it out so Arsenio commented that we don't want a repeat so we'll talk about something else. After the season ended, the crew were all on a trip celebrating the renewal but received a call saying that they had been canceled. It seems that the biggest reason for the first cancellation was bringing on Farrakhan and the second cancellation had to do with mentioning Farrakhan as if Arsenio pushed the envelope and went off script, meaning he didn't want to be controlled.
I loved me some Arsenio. He was an icon for real. Don't really hear much from him now. Edit: It sucks how "our people" will go to others (knowing they're in competition) and bypassing on Arsenio. Big Derrick Yup. That was definitely the last time MJ did a late night talk show too. Once in a lifetime.
Awwww!!! That's so nice 😊
I dropped watching Carson like a bad habit once Arsenio's show started. Miss you, Arsenio!
You can watch Hall now and laugh just at the fashion and the way he talked. And say, "I can't believe people talked and dressed that way." Totally dated.
You could watch old Carson and Letterman clips and they could have aired yesterday and you'd never know they were 40 years old.
He should get his own UA-cam channel, kinda like what Jada pinkette does. He could have celebs on his channel and interview them that way
That a great idea.

On his second return! I was one of his million viewers!

Late night talks shows are dinosaurs in 2019 ... nobody really watches that crap ... Hall was a pioneer with late night talk shows
The Arsenio Hall show captured that moment in popular culture like no other. The fashion, music, guests all came together for a perfect hour every night. It’s crazy to think that all these years later nothing has come close to matching it.
I loved his show. He always had the latest stars, and the best music artists.
It's funny, how it's it's controversial when Arsenio book Farrakhan yet when Barbara Walters and 60 minutes interview Farrakhan nobody said a word about it...
🙄🙄🙄
That's just proof right there how racist the entertainment industry can be sometimes

I loved it 😁

Arsenio was outstanding! He had a unique interviewing style that was genuine and cool!

But...Hall's show is moved around and cancelled for "ratings"?
ironroad I’m completely concur. I call bullshit 🗣
@Tina Butterfly nah Tyler Perry is a fucking boss, they can't cancel him. Dude is worth like half a billion. He built his own studio, all type of shit.

Keenan Ivory Wayans did a great job playing Arsenio.

Yes, it was the time slot! People who work could not stay up that late!
I never liked Leno or Letterman. Arsineo was my favorite, I was so bumbed when the show ended.
@@eatwelllivelonger6935 by 92 he was irrelevant. I was in college. I remember.
It was renewed & they pulled the rug smh

I loved the Arsenio Hall show!!
I wish it never ended the 1st or 2nd time
I used to watch it as a kid and was so happy to see the show come back bringing Bone Thugs-n-harmony on the show.

Quality, integrity, style and class without resulting to offense or controversy.
We SO need him and his kind again!
Well done and good show.
I truly enjoyed The Arsenio Hall talk show. I felt his show ended when Arsenio told America to kiss his black butt it was all about the network executives telling him he should have Farrakhan on his show.
I would stay up late every night to watch this show knowing I had to get up early every morning for work. I could not miss this show!!!!
Arsenio Hall was the BEST! I was really excited when his show came back a few years ago. Wish he was still on.
Me too.

Straight up. When The Arsenio Hall Show came back, I remember seeing a lot of flack on social about how it wasn't good when all I could think of when I saw guests was... Black Hollywood has NO IDEA how much it missed and needed Arsenio.
note: We all know it was the Farrakhan interview but due to the nature of the business and relationships and the fact that you 'still' have to work in this business. It's best to just say you resigned.
Big facts.
The same way NBC cancelled A Different World after having Sista Soulja on an episode
@@SylentONE WOW. Really? Didn't know what one
@@NERDSoul yep. It was the episode when Dwayne and Whitley went to LA for their honey moon during the riots that resulted from the Rodney King beating and shooting death of Latasha Harlins.
I was 6 years old
@@SylentONE WOW. Now I gotta go dig that episode up! thanks
Retro-DADE That’s my favorite episode.
The truth of the matter is, his show ended after the Network warned him not to let Louise Farrakhan appear on his show, and Arsenio ignored them, and let him on the show anyway, a month later the show was postponed. Facts.
I'm white, and I just loved the Arsenio Hall Show. I watched it every chance I could. I thought he was one of the best show hosts ever. Johnny Carson and Arsenio Hall were the two best talk show hosts ever. Arsenio was very respectful of his guests and always gave them a lot of chance to talk, and his questions were very good and very respectful. I learned a lot about the lives and careers of so many people watching Arsenio's shows. He was funny and always seemed down to earth and genuine in his monologs and with his guests. It's to bad there are so many issues behind the scenes that just seem to ruin it for viewers. I hope he is doing well, and I am not interested in knowing everything about his private life. That's all his business and not ours. God Bless you Arsenio Hall wherever you are.
