There have been many black actors and comedians that mention Eddie Murphy giving them a foot in the door. He got Damon Wayans a bit part in Beverly Hills Cop, Chris Rock mentioned that he got his first real role in Beverly Hills Cop II after Eddie saw him in a comedy club and also said that Eddie was the reason why the manager put him on stage in that club, Dave Chapelle said that he got his first big role in The Nutty Professor and Keanon Ivory Wayans said that Eddie opened doors for him in Hollywood. He may be low key about it but Eddie looked out for his own.
Eddie dropped serious gems in that Interview. He has created platforms for many black comedians. Just because he doesn't wear Malcolm X shirts all the time doesn't mean he has less of an impact.
Far from it LMFAO... FUCKING FAR FROM IT... Not even CLOSE. Malcom was OVERT, even MLK was FUCKING OVERT lmfao... His LAST clip seemed to be more on scale and par and he unironically DESCRIBED himself in that last part, about his earlier career.. Notice he was scared in his corner getting his not wanting to upset HENCE the talk of them WHISPERING "in his own home"........ Mind you it WASNT it was STILL on Paramount's SHIT! He over TIME helped a handful but not at all to the scale he could have, I mean after DECADESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSs of course you've "helped a lot" but point was not to a potential scale he could have.. this is EDDIE MURPHY.. he was the BLACK Star Up... *now no one is saying do the most extreme shit and HEY maybe he would have tried and tanked Thus not being able to help ANY of the many black stars he did go on to help. He seemed more logical and understanding In the last clip where he spoke on the matter. *cue you aint reading all this, that go to cop out meme to dodge. lmfao
Eddie even paid tribute to his forbears in comedy by bringing together for Harlem Nights such as Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx, Malcolm X's buddy from his days as Detroit Red.

Facts he put alot of up and coming black actors/actresses on the scene but Spike isn't talking just about roles in a movie. He focused more on positions of power i.e. directing/writing. Unfortunately we will never truly know how much leverage someone really has over the hollywood power structure. I do believe a 'Black Hollywood' would be something special holding the same 'power' Bollywood and Nollywood have in their respective countries
I feel where both of these men are coming from. Spike wants us to use our power when we get it to uplift our black culture and give some opportunities. Eddie is saying I’m doing that but in the background because if I do what you’re doing then a shutdown is easier to happen because they see it coming. Black Wall Street is a prime example of that. If they see us in the rear view, they’re going to block the passing lanes. To be honest, they both need each other in the fight with their respective view points. Spike runs defense/distraction while Eddie runs offense/scoring for this thing to work.
@@host2498 It takes a generation of millions to hold us back! Actresses en actors of today are the producers of tomorrow. Just like Eddy said, he cann't storm in alone looking like a fool. He and Spike are creating an army of art and creativity
People don't give Eddie enough credit. Look at his older interviews. He was in his 20s talking about injustice. I've never seen any celebrity at their peak speak the way Eddie did. He even called out the Oscar's...at the Oscar's. If all the black entertainers United, Hollywood wouldn't exist. Think of how boring sports, music, movies and TV would be .
Look up Tulsa and Rosewood. You must not be a student of history. That being said jusg because we keep getting sabotaged doesnt mean we should give up.
When people question Eddie’s blackness, I wonder if they’ve actually listened to his stand up. Problem with a lot of people is that if you’re not doing it how they expect you to do it, they believe you’re not doing it.
Eddie spoke out against Racism in Hollywood at the Awards in the early 90s. Nothing new , he's been in the fight just in his own way. Look at all the writers on Delirious and Raw who made it in Hollywood.
Naw ...people see him portray characters like Rasputia(abusive), dreamgirls(drug addict), shrek (literally a donkey), trading places (con-man) that demean the black community and they don't like it. Its ez to understand. 🤷🏿♂️
That's why I hate when people think black celebrities have power in Hollywood , they don't own the studios. THEY WORK FOR THEM!!!. EDDIE IS STATING NOTHING BUT FACTS!!!! . Lol why do people always say tyler perry?? he literally open up his studio last year . He may own a studio but needs a PLATFORM to release the films . He does not own a network or broadcasting network or any movie cinemas , where these movies have to be approved before being shown . THINK PEOPLE THINK LOL
Yea. But now you got somebody like Tyler Perry. Who owns his stuff. Yet he too big headed to work with other people. He can do so much more with the Tyler Perry Brand.
@@brotherLee340 I'm glad you said that. That's been my biggest complaint about Tyler Perry for Years. You have your own black studio and your in a position of power to help black filmmakers like Ryan Coogler, Berry Jenkins, F. Gary Gray, Antoine Fuqua, and Ava DuVernay. But instead it's just another vehicle to launch his own brand.
I think that both camps should be making an effort to understand each other's positions. Instead of throwing shade at each . We need radical people like Spike Lee putting pressure in the frontlines, while your diplomatic people like Eddie Murphy can be behind the scenes. But if we are all working in unison, with the same goal and time frame in mind, we could be making a lot of progress with the same obstacles we are facing now.
Financially. Money talks, b******* walks. Its the only true way to win. All the other races that came to America, understand this. Until we put our money where our mouth is. We're just going to be spinning in circles.
Eddie Murphy hired my cousin to be his personal assisant back in 1992. Ill never forget how excited my family was. We were super juiced! Well my couisn got eddie to sign a autographed poster for me and ill never forget its exact words. It stated, "To Kevin a young black man with a future that has no limits........ Be Free, Eddie Murphy" That always resonated within & i strove to find out what he really meant by those words

He does. With all due respect the fact that you've never seen it before is more on you than on him. The character he played in Beverly Hills cop was the FIRST time that a black man was played with any alpha energy at all. Richard Pryor (RIP) had to soft shoe, it wasn't time yet . Eddie was the FIRST man in hollywood that played a black man as cocky, arrogant, irreverent and in control of anyone in his surroundings....including whites. That may not SEEM like a big deal now, but it was and he caught hell because of it.
So... Hollywood had to be called out for racism because most, if not all the producers who run or own production companies are white? It took white people to employ these comedians and actors, made them famous and got payed handsomely for it, they are simple an employee, so they cant demand squat. Figure once they(blacks) make it big, have millions to spend, they're more than welcome to start their own production company, then they can hire all the blacks they want to curb the complaints by their own, but do they, nope, because they would rather bask in the limelight of success and still complain about total nonsense. smh
+Bige4u u don't think back in the day when Hollywood producer/directors were all white, they were biased toward hiring only white actors? Ur solution, rather than correcting their behaviour 'just make your own Hollywood lol' it's not that simple my guy, it's a multi billion dollar industry
He sure did. He hipped us to the “one negro at a time” game that Hollywood runs. He just said it with a smile on his face, instead of a Spike Lee scowl so it doesn’t get as much acknowledgement
Harlem Nights, my Eddie Murphy movie. Classy, legendary cast, funny as hell. One thing about Murphy, his movies make black people look powerful, strong, like to say, yeah, black folks look good too. In Boomerang (corporate and executive), Coming to America (Royalty) and Harlem Nights (classy and stylish). Only thing was they put TOOOO MUCH make up on Eddie
@Walter Brown my point exactly. A lot of legends in this movie and all were funny as hell. I'm sure Eddie musta felt blessed being in the presence of all those classic actors and actresses.
@@skeebo9322 Both Boomerang and Coming to America depicted Blk ppl, American and international, as beautiful, happy people who run successful businesses without handouts from white ppl. That's very political yet subtle.
Not so fast. Does Spike Lee over compensate at times in a manner that is reckless? Yeah Does Eddie Murphy know damn well he's the token across the board in most projects and do entirely too little to even put his own camp on? Obviously We're right back where we started!

Sometimes, Spike Lee is comes off as Preachy HOTEP, who will always criticize other black peers... He accuses Eddie for not infiltrating enough blacks in Hollywood, yet Tyler Perry DOES infiltrate black talent in ALL of his productions and Spike trashes him for the “quality”, of his work. Can’t win with Spike. Love all of his movies, nonetheless.
Harlem Nights had every black comedian in it. Red Foxx, Richard Pryor, Robin Harris etc. Eddie always put people on and honored the greats before him once he gained some clout. Spike sounds like Faizon hating on Dave Chapelle in this.
"Spike gets over anxious playing that militant brother role and occasionally says some stupid stuff" - Eddie Murphy ua-cam.com/video/_ozv-l-7avs/v-deo.html
You gotta take what Faizon says with a grain of salt. He's a tough lover. All those guys came up in the game together, so although some stuff he says sounds harsh he's got love for them all.
They should make a movie about what the black community could look like 60 years from now. We need something to look FORWARD to. Not repeating the same old "slave" or racism narrative.
I think society. As a whole puts stock in actors and entertainers, most times they are barely educated. But for many of they have the talent it can be a quick, but not sure, way to become wealthy. The problem is people equate wealth with knowledge and are always asking famous people about their opinions.
You can look at all Eddie’s movies. He puts everybody on. This vid is really pointless. Who cares if he works with spike. Spike isn’t the holy grail. They just have two different lanes 😳
Exactly they are clearly to different types of talents... so them working together mean what? What would they do ? Is the question one is very super militant and the other is super jovial ..so yeah I dont know and Eddie has put some man ppl on its crazy
@jason Laface I co-sign on the pointlessness of this vid. Motown moved into film making in the 70's. Then there were the Cosby & Poitier collabs during that same era. How did those happen if blacks don't work together in Hollywood?
If you were black and showed up at the casting call, you made it in Coming to America. And that movie is considered a classic by anyone who has seen it. Many different races and backgrounds love the movie.
The media wanted them against each other because they were two black gifted men with huge platforms. Whole time I've come to find out they each had a mutual respect for each other.
yeah Mike had leverage but he had an extensive collection 2 and to be truthful they really didn't have a beef so to speak it was more or less competition but truth be told Michael Jackson and Prince wrote the song Bad but Prince didn't put it underneath his name and didn't want to sing it and Michael bought it from him out right so they couldn't really have beef if they doing songs together Michael and friends have similar backgrounds they was both Jehovah's Witness raised was in the industry from Young both was very fervent about their business even though Prince was a tyrant listen Mike even show Prince love during a James Brown performance James Brown call Michael on stage not even noticing Prince was in the building as well Michael pulls James Brown to the side and let him know that Prince in the building and then he calls Prince up there they all did they rendition of it's a man's world. it really did hurt Prince that Michael passed away because of anybody in the industry Prince seen him as his equal and definitely besides his fiercest competitor they was two sides of the same coin note Prince never said anything about him being a pedophile cuz he knew it wasn't true
Kaleah Collins amen I remember reading an article with Michael Jackson and he said he has to write down his songs immediately because god gives him songs and if he didn’t capitalize God would give them to prince. That is a huge compliment he saw prince as his equal.
I have always admired Spike Lee and Eddie Murphy for their talents, but whenever I hear of Eddie speaking on serious issues, I am taken aback by how brilliant he is. There's not many entertainers that are even interested in being such deep thinkers. I have respect for both of these men.

Valid points but look at spike lee . Dude could easily create tons of movies or shows but he didn’t (as Murphy ) . IMO spike lee more bite then bark while Murphy just did his thing without make a big deal about it for the most part and was smart about what to say to no burn bridges or close doors . While spike Lee’s just didn’t care about what he said or did till it bite him in the ass or causes problems . IMO of spike just did his own thing without causes a storm or pointing the finger he better in a much better place then he is today . as time has shown any actor or director of any color that has started problem or picked fight always got ignored or the people or studios that wanted to work with them dryed up like Mel Gibson or rosanne .
Eddie Murphy is right he's an entertainer people hate politics leaking into entertainment now. Everyone of all racial backrounds will watch Black actors Like Eddie Murphy, Will Smith , denzel washington, Samuel Jackson because they're there to entertain which is why people see movies. Eddie Murphy has been successful in dealing in race better than any black actor i know because he shows different sides to the community. Like coming to america and boomerang both have black casts but one is upper middle class corprate america while the other working class small business owners. In beverly hills cop he played a cop, in the nutty professor/dr doolittle he played intellegent and educated men, even in Norbit/Bowfinger he plays against the violent black man image. so being covert actually helps extend your life in hollywood and shine a light on different aspects of the community at the same time without losing it's entertainment factor.
How has eddie been successful dealing with race? In shrek he is the biggest star with the longest resume and they make him a donkey. He LITERALLY made an ass of himself for $
Eddie did NOT lie here. I remember when the O.G Fred Williamson tried to start a company with his friends Jim Brown, Jim Kelly (RIP), and Richard Roundtree. He said the reason it couldn't come together and thrive was because they couldn't decide who would be in charge. I hate that stigma for us, why it seems like we can't work and build together.....Man...
Exactly. I just had a similar conversation about the financial blackout and group economics. Mfs won't even give up processed fast food and other irrelevant materialistic things. And those are the same ones talking about unity. Our people have significant spending power. I believe if these corrupt businesses get hit where it hurts, they'll get they collective shit together and we could rebuild our communities and create real generational wealth.🤦🏾♀️
Claudetta, I said the same thing to my eldest son a few years ago. We we standing outside of IHOP one sunday for brunch. I said to him, if black people were not to dine out, not purchase clothing, only support our movie, if there wasn't any black movies out, don't see anything. Buy our children's clothes a little bigger so as not spend for about 2yrs and just not spend unnecessarily for 2yrs, the economy will suffer greatly. That's a sur fire way to see how much we contribute to the GROSS NATIONAL PRODUCT.. White people would respect our money, especially if we banked what we didn't spend. It wouldn't take 2yrs for them to notice. 30 days will do. I wish I had a magic potion just to do that with us, because we would never do it collectively, not even out of curiosity. And that breaks my heart.💔🤤.
SMFH bro real talk! Imagine Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen not forming Dreamworks studios for the sole reason that one of them couldn’t decide who the leader was. 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️ Black people have to get over this ego Bullshit.
I think in certain situations, it makes more sense for the alpha entertainers to build their own fiefdoms. It's not about separation. This leads to more black people being hired underneath. The talented ones joining together just to bump heads isn't necessarily the best thing. They can still collaborate for projects, but this way creates more jobs for the black community in general.

They can do it...Tyler Perry built his empire making movies for black women. His target audience made him rich. Stallone did it with the Expendables franchise. He contacted all his co-stars DIRECTLY. It won't work if all of them demand to be paid 20 million for the movie though. Chris Tucker will have to take a pay cut lol. Probably all would have to take a percentage off the back end profits, have no ego, (if coordination's an issue...they gotta treat it like a funeral (who misses those?) film in Canada (Where it's cheaper) and do a comedy. (Comedies are cost a lot less budget-wise, easier to make and easy to make a large profit off of. Just look at all Marlon Wayans movies, Ice Cube films etc.) This isn't to say they can't make a high-budget, high-grossing film...but if people are afraid of losing their ish...then minimized risks are the way to go. Actually...they should all pool their money/talent to do a Boondock's movie. They'd all be voice acting so no need to worry about the social distancing. DONE and DONE. Or just make another Blade movie/Coming to America (think they are making a sequel) with all black cast lol. Can't say I enjoyed Dolemite...and finally...Oprah, Jay-Z and the Obamas can help produce it under aliases...even JK Rowling used a male pen name during her career because she didn't want her target audience to dismiss her for writing books for young boys. It's possible, just a matter of who wants to see the end result more than anything else. Like Michael Jordan winning championships with the Chicago Bulls. 150% devoted to the end result above all else.

But if you read the book “Homey Don’t Play That,” about how the show In Living Color came about, Eddie Murphy was driving to the hood as a rich man and kick starting the careers of The ENTIRE Wayans family, Chris Rock, Robert Townsend and others. It is a wonderful book, and he would tell them not to give him for the movies he created and helped create at their kitchen table’s like “I’m gon Git you sucka,” and “Hollywood Shuffle.” The real question is why can’t we do more of what he did?

I LOVE AND RESPECT BOTH OF THESE BROTHAS... they shaped my childhood and gave us CLASSICS to enjoy for a lifetime! God bless them both ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is what I dislike about certain people. They don't understand that everyone is NOT the same. We don't take action in the same way and we don't have to. There is a need for both Eddie and Spike. They have two completely different audiences and some might connect with both. At the end of it all, there has to be a respect and unity in our differences. We are a diverse people , no matter the same box that society has tried to force us in.
Also, despite how many people kept saying about MJ, MJ hired many blacks for many things. Also it was black people when he felt the most comfortable in being his true self. He would curse, speak about women (even ones he dated), speak in his real actual deep voice & etc. around HIS PEOPLE! It's usually whenever he was around white people when that public persona MJ appears! I love that MJ had hired Spike Lee for his TDCAU video & didn't mind at all working with or even befriending fellow Black people. & let's not forget how much he loved himself Diana Ross! Diana is not some light-skin, biracial looking Black woman!
@@markilew250 Fans Black or White should always take up for MJ because those trying to be in charge of history, is steadily trying to destroy his incredible musical legacy. All because he stepped on the White man toes when he bought the entire Fab five's catalog, lol.
Eddie Murphy was brilliant in choosing his words, when responding to second hand quotes from another. Divide and conquer has been the M. O., in every field where Black people are placed in front of a camera. "Show your skin, read the script, and pretend that you are the normal of the industry." I respect and appreciate all of his contributions. He has always been approachable to his Black fan base. Salute!!!!💯

Listen to Patrice O'Neal take on spike lee
Same goes for Martin Lawrence too he put a lot of ppl like Tracy Morgan

Eddie put Martin Lawrence on too. Eddie recommended Martin host Def Comedy Jam.

Eddie dropped serious gems in that Interview. He has created platforms for many black comedians. Just because he doesn't wear Malcolm X shirts all the time doesn't mean he has less of an impact.

The character he played in Beverly Hills cop was the FIRST time that a black man was played with any alpha energy at all. Richard Pryor (RIP) had to soft shoe, it wasn't time yet . Eddie was the FIRST man in hollywood that played a black man as cocky, arrogant, irreverent and in control of anyone in his surroundings....including whites. for those who don't remember, Eddie called Hollywood on their racism at the Academy Awards...and got flack for it.
I agree . They are .some don't see it they are very got you making a nut out of your self
So... Hollywood had to be called out for racism because most, if not all the producers who run or own production companies are white? It took white people to employ these comedians and actors, made them famous and got payed handsomely for it, they are simple an employee, so they cant demand squat. Figure once they(blacks) make it big, have millions to spend, they're more than welcome to start their own production company, then they can hire all the blacks they want to curb the complaints by their own, but do they, nope, because they would rather bask in the limelight of success and still complain about total nonsense. smh

yeah Mike had leverage but he had an extensive collection 2 and to be truthful they really didn't have a beef so to speak it was more or less competition but truth be told Michael Jackson and Prince wrote the song Bad but Prince didn't put it underneath his name and didn't want to sing it and Michael bought it from him out right so they couldn't really have beef if they doing songs together Michael and friends have similar backgrounds they was both Jehovah's Witness raised was in the industry from Young both was very fervent about their business even though Prince was a tyrant listen Mike even show Prince love during a James Brown performance James Brown call Michael on stage not even noticing Prince was in the building as well Michael pulls James Brown to the side and let him know that Prince in the building and then he calls Prince up there they all did they rendition of it's a man's world. it really did hurt Prince that Michael passed away because of anybody in the industry Prince seen him as his equal and definitely besides his fiercest competitor they was two sides of the same coin note Prince never said anything about him being a pedophile cuz he knew it wasn't true
Kaleah Collins amen I remember reading an article with Michael Jackson and he said he has to write down his songs immediately because god gives him songs and if he didn’t capitalize God would give them to prince. That is a huge compliment he saw prince as his equal.

Coming To America-Wonderful American Movie.
I would love to see it. Eddie, Denzel, Will, Wesley, Samuel, Fishburn, Michael B., Spike, Coogler, Idris, Lupita, Boseman, Foxx, Isa, Duvernay, all of them .... working on a movie.
Damn, that would be nice. It mjght require a trillion dollar budget.

If smith and Perry did a movie means it be a double shitty movie. Bomb too since smith box office kryptonite now. Be like having a Depp in a movie. Guarenteed flop
But if you read the book “Homey Don’t Play That,” about how the show In Living Color came about, Eddie Murphy was driving to the hood as a rich man and kick starting the careers of The ENTIRE Wayans family, Chris Rock, Robert Townsend and others. It is a wonderful book, and he would tell them not to give him for the movies he created and helped create at their kitchen table’s like “I’m gon Git you sucka,” and “Hollywood Shuffle.”
The real question is why can’t we do more of what he did?
With the pulse of the nation being what it is right now the opportunity to create truthful and enlightening entertainment for ALL eyes to behold and benefit from is there right now for even unknown aspiring filmmakers. In the French territories of Martinique and Guadeloupe (Caribbean) we call white folks "Zorey" in our ancestral language (built around west-african languages and erroneously labelled French-based creole) which literally means "ears"... That fear of being heard by the white folks has survived in all descendants of enslaved Africans in the Americas, in my opinion. The same goes for the way we fail to overtly unite when we could be doing great things for our communities. Those who dare get a target on their backs for their efforts. They get dragged through the mud in popular media (and now on social media too) so that their credibility crumbles fast. It's not just a U.S. thing, sadly.
