It's more complicated than "too far" or "too mean".... somehow it's the feeling that's just off. I actually don't care that much for his character work, but I chalk that up to personal taste. But his in-the-moment wit and passion and energy and love and goodness always shines through. Martin Short said to Bill Maher after Bill Maher asked Martin, "How are Canadians seeing what's going on here in the US." "Well, in the cab I was riding in on the way over, because he's to cheap to spring for a limo..." Thank You for this.
Bill Maher was so ridiculous in that glick interview - had no clue how to jsut play the hapless straight guy and kept trying to be serious. What a dunce.
I was on the Canadian game show "Definition" back in 1978 with Martin Short & Patrick Macnee... Something just clicked with Martin & I, and immediately fell into perfect ad lib rhythm during the commercial breaks. While the host, Patrick, and the other guest contestant were cracking up laughing; we just continued to play off each other faster and faster while the others couldn't stop laughing. We went all the way into the 'Back From Commercial' countdown, all the way until the count reach 3 [5... 4... 3... 2... 1... I always loved improv and adlibbing, so getting that chance early on when I was still in my teens to play off of a true improv artist of his caliber was so much fun.
“Definition” was a great show! I used to watch it in the 1970s when I lived in NW Minnesota. We were able to get three Canadian TV stations, two of which were from Winnipeg, and the third being originally located in Pembina, ND, then moved across the border to Canada.

Martin Short is able to separate good talk show hosts from bad ones. People like Conan and Letterman thrive in his presence, really able to kick back the banter and move things along. Tremendous video and timely for me. Martin Short was part of my childhood. I always wondered about him and thanks to the YT algo, now I know far more about him and can appreciate it. Thank you.
Excellent video! The presentation was spot on, the length perfect and your voice very pleasant. Martin and his characters are so endearing. His roasting is almost always well received and it's never felt cringey to me. It takes empathy to know when a person is humble and secure enough to laugh at themselves.
There's a really sweet thing at 3:32 where Colbert says "I'm Second City Chicago and you're Second City Toronno" - it is rare when Colbert says Toronto the Trawna way but with Martin Short you have to say it right.
It took me a while to warm to Martin Short, to be honest, on SCTV in Toronto. But his Ed Grimley and Jiminy Glick characters were so over the top they wrapped around the other side to great. His talk show appearances and long-time friendship with Steve Martin and the myriad stories of how kind and generous he is to everyone he meets, famous and not, can't help but win you over. This is a terrific video! Very well made and heartfelt, and it's praise is well-deserved. Martin Short is a national treasure.
I'm glad I clicked on this. I was always a bit tepid on Short, but watching this truly gave me a new appreciation... while also cracking me the hell up w/so many of the clips. Great work!
He has so much knowledge about the people he roasts, even though he pretends he barely knows who they are. Calling ICE CUBE, VANILLA ICE throughout the interview, even though ICE CUBE got angry..and chocked him.
@@endofscene You have to know about people and empathize with them to come up with funny stuff, so people can relate and identify, so it can be universal. Honestly it is rare, I learn anyting on youtube, even rarer I care about showbusiness stuff. But this segment really got me hooked. I always loved Short as an actor but did not realise the depth to the man. So thank you for this insight in to who Martin Short is. It makes me apreciate the man even more.
First saw him at Second City Toronto Firehall. He did a wonderful impression of Kate Hepburn in Suddenly Last Summer. At my university he and pals did skits and sang Supreme hits in the cafeteria. Hes always been quick and funny.
7:25... Larry David is trying hard not to break character... a few seconds later, he can't help it.... I loved Martin Short from the first time I saw him in Three Fugitives. Great video!!!
Martin Short actually had his own talk show between 1999 and 2000. That's basically the show where he tried out Jiminy Glick for the first time. The Martin Short Show is a syndicated talk show, based on the late night model, hosted by Martin Short with announcer/sidekick Michael McGrath. It was produced by King World Productions. John Blanchard, who had previously worked with Martin Short on SCTV, directed the show. Jiminy Glick became a fixture of the show. After the show got canceled he took it to Comedy Central. Because it was a syndicated daytime talk show it performed badly in ratings. It also had the same name as the sitcom that Martin Short did 5 years earlier in 1994.
Glick was the best thing to come out of that show. I dig Short, but that was not his strong suit. I remember the composer for “South Park: Uncut” getting visibly upset because Martin preempted his performance of “Blame Canada” with a preview of “Blame Canada” and the composer kinda felt like the punch line was told before he could perform it.
Love this tribute! I've loved Martin since the SCTV days. Jiminy Glick, Nathan Thurm, and Ed Grimley are real people. His detractors in these comments probably hate the very things I love about him.
Renzy. This homage to Martin Short has opened my eyes. I never gave Martin Short a second thought apart from remembering him in Three Amigos. Steve Martin had my attention at the time. I had no idea Martin Short was such a warm, lovely, funny, sharp guy. I feel happy having watched this.

These kids are by a large margin the most narcissistic generation the world has ever seen. How could something or someone matter if it came before they were born?
You are talking about movies even before my time. I may have seen one or two movies in my life that had him but it was fine. I never watched his early movies. They weren't for me. He is fine but not every one is going to just watch every old movie.
@@JacobSantosDevIt’s just stupid. If kids aren’t watching older movies whose fault is it? The parents. Who is supposed to introduce them to him besides themselves. But, no one back in the day was actively watching older funny performers. The movies either showed up on tv or you didn’t watch them. Abbot and Costello. Jerry Lewis. Marx brothers. Buster Keaton. Charlie Chaplin. Woody. If movies are like great literature. Martin shorts work is like a good modern novel. But, Chaplin, Keaton, Marx are akin to Shakespeare. AFI lists their top 100 comedies. No Short movies. I’ve been a fan of Short since SCTV. He might be great, but I don’t find most of his movies to be.

Martin Short is a one man roast. He fills the void left behind by Don Rickles. An absolute beast and I love him. lol
Rickles did it by either being mean or just being angry with himself. Martin does it with more silly and charm.
I cannot say enough good things about Martin Short. A phenomenal comedic genius. Hilarious. Genuine and kind. Love him so much
One of the all time Greats. Love him and Steve Martin.
Tremendous video and timely for me. Martin Short was part of my childhood. I always wondered about him and thanks to the YT algo, now I know far more about him and can appreciate it. Thank you.
A Supreme Talent. No matter the character... no matter the tone... the human always comes shining through.
Excellent video! The presentation was spot on, the length perfect and your voice very pleasant. Martin and his characters are so endearing. His roasting is almost always well received and it's never felt cringey to me. It takes empathy to know when a person is humble and secure enough to laugh at themselves.
AND host. He just had a heck of a week on Jimmy Kimmel.
As did his friend Jiminy Glick.
That's right folks, there's new Jiminy!!
Martin Short is paying homage to Don Rickles. The master of insults.
MARTIN sure is the MAN. All this new Jiminy Glick content is making life so sweet.
This man is so quick witted and charming. I always look forward to his interviews.
Great montage of a great man. Aren’t we all lucky to have him. Thanks for this homage. I’ll be re watching
One of a kind. A different smart charmed. Smart cookie. Unique. The best interviewer comedy king
There's a really sweet thing at 3:32 where Colbert says "I'm Second City Chicago and you're Second City Toronno" - it is rare when Colbert says Toronto the Trawna way but with Martin Short you have to say it right.
Great job!!! Martin Short is one of a kind. One of the greatest comedic minds and unreal acting and improv. thanks for this.
I howled with laughter watching this! Punch! Punch! Punch! I could hardly breathe. Very well ordered presentation of the man's style. Thank you!
This was so entertaining. And your commentary, Renzy, was superb. Informative and perfectly timed.
I love Marty Short, been watching him since I was a teen, When he was on the classic comedy SCTV
That Jiminy Glick interview with Bill Hader was one of the best ones I've seen him do. Short has not missed a beat after all these years.
Thank you for being you, Mr. Short
...he was 'fascinated by morons with power'...he'll be absolutely mesmerized for the next 4 years!
Martin Short gives it as well as he takes it, that's his charm. He's not a sensitive bully. That's the mark of a great comedian.
Martin Short is one of the funniest comedians to have ever existed. He's in my top 5 for sure.
I'm glad I clicked on this. I was always a bit tepid on Short, but watching this truly gave me a new appreciation... while also cracking me the hell up w/so many of the clips. Great work!
Anyway empathy is probably the single most important factor in coming up with funny material.
He has so much knowledge about the people he roasts, even though he pretends he barely knows who they are. Calling ICE CUBE, VANILLA ICE throughout the interview, even though ICE CUBE got angry..and chocked him.
Why do you say that?
@@endofscene You have to know about people and empathize with them to come up with funny stuff, so people can relate and identify, so it can be universal. It's deeper than superficial roasting and doesn't really fit in your typical contemporary "roast contests", which are more mean-spirited than funny.
I greatly appreciate this video. Never realized how much depth he brings.
The most savage talk show guest of all time was Don Rickles. But Martin Short definetely picked up the standard. I love him.
I prefer Short's pacing over Rickles'. Rickles seemed to rush, sometimes.
Frank Sinatra agrees
Martin is better because he prepares well. Rickles just ad libbed and sometime the ad libs were not funny.
Rickles is fine but nowhere near as funny as martin short.
Short outpaces Rickles handily now. Marty perfected what Rickles did so well.
Phenomenal video!!! Loved it
This was nice. He's the best. Always cheers me up. Makes me laugh and smile.
Im a simple guy, I see Martin Short, I click thumbs up 👍
7:25... Larry David is trying hard not to break character... a few seconds later, he can't help it.... I loved Martin Short from the first time I saw him in Three Fugitives. Great video!!!
"Quick witted" while showing a "Half-wits" clip, genius!
Yes. I caught that right away.
Martin Short, Norm MacDonald, and Don Rickles were the kings of talk show guests.
Well done presentation. Thanks. He's always been one of my favorites.
There's a Jiminy Glick movie called Jiminy Glick in La La Wood.
I really like how you presented this video. The way you tied everything together at the end was good too!
Love this tribute! I've loved Martin since the SCTV days. Jiminy Glick, Nathan Thurm, and Ed Grimley are real people. His detractors in these comments probably hate the very things I love about him.
Martin Short is an absolute comedic genius! His "insults" are absolutely hilarious and he's a great guy!
Thank you for making this
Renzy. This homage to Martin Short has opened my eyes. I never gave Martin Short a second thought apart from remembering him in Three Amigos. Steve Martin had my attention at the time. I had no idea Martin Short was such a warm, lovely, funny, sharp guy. I feel happy having watched this.
Wonderful video, a truly heartfelt tribute befitting one of the greats.
I’ve adored Martin Short since I was a kid. Always enjoyed his work
His movie, Clifford, with Charles Gordon is a CLASSIC
Grodin
This was a really well made video and I learned so much about Martin Short.
Martin Short is a comedic virtuoso- a fact proved time and time again over his comprehensive oeuvre.
renzy, i liked how you put this together, your paced commentary, background music, the whole flow was nice you have a talent for this i hope you keep going.
Thank you for the kind words :)
I love Martin Short. He's hilarious, he's just so funny!
Delightful essay (and script) about a delightful character. Thank you!
It hurts my heart you had to say "if your not familiar w/ Martin Short." Do kids not watch films made before they were born anymore?
These kids are by a large margin the most narcissistic generation the world has ever seen. How could something or someone matter if it came before they were born?
Ok boomer
You are talking about movies even before my time. I may have seen one or two movies in my life that had him but it was fine. I never watched his early movies. They weren't for me. He is fine but not every one is going to just watch every old movie.
“If _your_ not?” As in the not that belongs to you? Grammar being thought of as optional is another issue we could raise here.
Wow! You have my subscription. This is such a well-crafted, fascinating, inciteful video. In fact, I am surprising myself by typing these words right now, but they are what I am feeling. Excellent job!
Martin Short and Robin Williams(RIP) in my mind are the best talk show guests of all time. So much fun for the host and the audience. Both guys just committed to trying to give a great show no matter what show it is.
Robin Williams stayed with Martin Short in Edmonton one time. Short told the story about how Robin loved watching the kids play road hockey. He told that story just after Robin Williams died and it was so nice.

Gotta include Norm in this list.
What a wonderful comedic genius. God bless him.
If you want to see a man handle an on-air goof up with incredible grace, check out his interview with Kathie Lee Gifford.
Yep 100% a class act!
I saw it and my heart sank when it happened, but he handled it so well. On and off camera, he’s seems to be someone to admire and look up to.
Im not sure if I have seen any of your other videos but Im so glad I saw this one. I have honestly had a pretty bad year so far and seeing this video where you talk so warmly about a comedian who reminds me of such good memories from my childhood without pushing a political angle has really made my week. Thank you
Jiminy Glick grew on me and now I think that character is so funny. His improv skills are A+
"Are you saying your people don't ... litigate?" freaking SENT me 😂😂😂😂😂
I watched your conan o’brien video, you do really great videos and I was very surprised that you don’t have more subs, keep up the great work!
"You look like a number two pencil" 😂😂😂 Martin is a Canadian legend. We love him and always will.
