You know that this song is written by Mike when Chester went through a bad time in his life.
Chester once told in an interview that this is the hardest one to sing for him.
Yes he apparently also broke into tears upon reading it. ;(
It was also his favorite LP song.
Mike wrote it but Mike has clarified in interviews that it wasn't about Chester. Chester just related so much to it that at first he refused to sing it because of the pain it caused.

I remember this was my least fav track of Meteora back when I was a kid, and over the years understanding the lyrical message has made this song hit much harder than it used to and it's now one of the best IMO
Exactly the same for me, it became my favourite song later on my life. Fun fact: Meteora was the very first cd I got from my dad when I was a kid
It's a shame you couldn't use the music vid. It's very impressive animation.
"Breaking the Habit" is one of my favorites. The early work they do is filled with a lot of the inner angst and turmoil felt by the younger generation to whom they appealed. I just didn't realize until later how much of that Chester felt himself. He unleashed it in every chorus line but I never heard him.
Hearing him sing this in Japan in 2007 was crazy and beautiful
I remember staying awake until midnight waiting for this video to premiere nearly 2 decades ago, I envy you hearing it for the first time, truly.
Ok, I am a big fan of Linkin park, everything from Hybrid Theory to One More Light. This is one of my favourite songs from Meteora, and from their entire discography. Even though I have heard this song hundreds of times this video brought me to tears and I’m so glad I came across it. I love that this is way more than a song review. This stuff reached me and I’m going to change. Thanks man 🙏

I appreciate you reacting to more Linkin Park. They really was a great band and one of my favourites. I used to listen to Hybrid Theory a lot when I was a teen because I was bullied and I had so much anger but was too scared to fight back. I could really relate to the anger you could hear in their songs because I felt it every single day. I can see the love you have for their songs too and it's great to watch. From crawling to breaking the habit. Chester was screaming out in pain literally. Mike held him together the best he could but Chester was finally taking over by his demons. He was a very good singer. Just wished he could have been helped. His pain and anger was so strong in his songs.

I miss Chester I've been listening to a lot of Linkin Park lately cuz I'm battling seizures really bad inside effects are suicidal thoughts and I also have CTE PTSD bipolar and stuff like that their music has saved my life so many times but I also got early onset dementia and I'm only 31 everyday gets harder not to just end it all

Currently hits differently for me right now. I'm helping a friend of mine get sober and I and a huge group of friends told him we'll go through it with him. We're all taking time to be there for him and take him to AAA meetings. All of us too swore off drinking as well. We just want to be there to help him.

The entire reanimation album is much more fun than some of the other stuff, such as one that you NEEEEEEED to listen to "Heavy" from the album "One More Light" Matter of fact, that entire album is full of gut wrenching insights to where his mind was just before he took his life. Be prepared for "Heavy" if you get around to listening to it.

I would say this song is more about suicide then drugs 100%. It makes more sense to me, this definitely isn't a uplifting song. He isn't breaking the habit if it is an addiction.

That isn't uplifting it's definitely suicide for me. When he's breaking the habit, he's breaking the habit by suicide. He's breaking the habit of the cycle he's in of constantly tormenting himself. The depression he had he was breaking the habit of. Because he realised he couldn't escape it, that was his life.
