Originally BM tried acting. The only movie I saw him in was proof he couldn't act. Some how his condescension and ability to belittle others made him money while masking his own inferiority complex. Besides, I don’t presume to know about other people’s personal relationships. For all we know he was 100% honest with her and she was ok with it. I think he's changed quite a bit over the last 20 years, comes with the territory of maturing and raising a family. He's 73 years old, you can't be an asshole forever if you want a companion in the twilight of life

Gene totally showed his articulate side in this interview as well as his quick wit. Not just a simple-minded rocker. Very impressive, indeed.
Gene has never been a simple minded rocker. He's a businessman through and through. You should listen to his talks about coming here as a Israeli boy who didn't speak English. He's far greater than the trash Kiss lyrics and make-up.
If Gene had stuck to teaching, he would have been the one teacher that the kids hung around with after school just to have fun.

Gene Simmons was very impressive in this conversation. Honest about himself and his sins. More importantly, he is knowledgeable and intelligent....with great perspective. He disagreed in an inoffensive manner. I'm impressed.

Great interview. I especially appreciated how Gene articulated his feelings about his love for his wife and family. Obviously, this is foremost on his mind, and he would like other people to realize it. Perhaps Bill seemed to want to change the subject, but I wanted to hear it and can relate to Gene's experience. As far as their political conversation is concerned, well, I have had way too many beers to comment on that!
Best show to date. Intelligent and articulate guest got to speak more than the host. Hope to see more of that.

Kiss is one of the few bands that articulate the words to all of their songs so well that I can easily understand them. Love that fact. And love their music

the chairs are the same, I think Gene has a big pillow of some kind on his, look closely, maybe he's uncomfortable slouched down low and has a hard time getting up from that low point, I also hate low seating, Gene has toured ,wearing 40 lbs of costume for several decades. Just sayin' no big deal. He's 73 now.

Gene’s is a great example of what one can do to succeed in the United States. He’s definitely outspoken but I admire the drive. Kiss was not an over night success. Never giving up, not getting into drugs & alcohol & making tough but necessary decisions is what got him where he is.

I find the profundity of Gene Simmons' emotional growth as admirable as I find Gene's commitment to true moral repentance. I am happy for my own journey to a higher humanity.

I was expecting this podcast to be much more combative but I was pleasantly surprised. What a difference it makes when Bill allows his guests to speak. Maybe Bill has been paying attention to the feedback he has been getting.
I seriously doubt it 😂 I think he does this for himself and doesn’t ever read any feedback.
I wasn't expecting much when I saw Gene Simmons listed as the guest for this show. I still remember Simmons' notoriously obnoxious 2002 interview on NPR's "Fresh Air," but this podcast episode contains a fantastic conversation. It's clear Simmons has matured a lot in the last 20 years, as Maher and Simmons discuss.
"Club Random" and "Conan Obrien Needs a Friend" are quite different but are by far the most entertaining interview podcasts I know of.

You can tell for all his bravado, Gene has benefited from being part of a band and a family. Having kids and a wife, and also a bandmate to bicker with like Paul Stanley has probably kept him grounded.

Dr. Ruth came to the college I went to on some sort of a speaking tour. Because I thought she was funny I went to see her. Worth every penny of the free admission that I paid (I am sure her appearance fee was jammed into my tuition somehow). That lady was hilarious. Better than most stand-up comedians that I have seen.
I think Gene Simmons is one of the best interview guests because he is articulate and concise. Always great watching his interviews.

I love listening to Bill, but during this podcast I kept saying "Oh, shut up Bill.". Gene is such an interesting and well spoken man.
Gene is a deep thinker and a smooth talker. So articulate and basically self taught in all things business and philosophy. I’m currently listening to his audiobook ME, Inc. which I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys him in this clip. Motivating stuff.

KISS is certainly not everyone's cup of tea but I believe Gene's business sense, the fact that he immigrated to this country with nothing...at all...and has built himself up to the level of success he's been enjoying for over 40 years is quite the testament to his business sense. But all of this is not to mean that I will be purchasing a KISS coffin any time soon. Best to you!

Never been a Kiss guy but Gene is a great guy, I always enjoyed the interviews I’ve seen of his. This one is GREAT!
Umm. Huge Kiss from way back. But every bit of scuttlebutt about him is pretty bad.
So, so, so many people who have had to work with him (particularly in music as opposed to business) consider him a completely unbearable egoist. I also think that he´s a good person, but we wouldn´t be friends!
Bill seemed overmatched here by Gene.
His giant ego and large list of female conquests aside, Gene Simmons is probably the most stable rock star out there. (Paul Stanley is probably up there too.) I love the fact that Gene's giant ego was able to keep Bill in check and have a normal conversation.

How Shannon stayed with this man for so many many years is beyond me. Off all the places to meet a loving committed and descent woman, the Playboy brothel was the last place anyone would even dream about. Yet Shannon was the real deal,and there she was. I have no idea what she was even doing there, but go figure ...life is strange indeed. Gene Simmons got really lucky when he met that lovely, beautiful girl, and she was a stunner when she was young. She is still a very attractive woman. Great wife, great mother, great homemaker, and long suffering. So glad Gene woke up to himself. It's true when they say it takes a good woman to bring out the best in a man. It's been my experience many many women, especially today, bring out the worst in their men folk.

I have had mostly disdain for Bill Maher over the years, but this makes me warm to him (slightly).
And to Gene as well. I've always been a bigger fan of the band than the individuals who make it up, though I generally do like much of what Gene has had to say, though he has also often been very adept at putting his foot in his mouth.
But here he seems to have developed more self-awareness and realization about his own failings, both past and present, which always makes a person more endearing than projecting their own greatness to the world.
Which has been Gene's modus operandi for most of his public life.

I loved KISS as a kid; I had their poster on my wall, but I was far too young and in the wrong era to know anything about my heroes. We had zero access to interviews, wikis, podcasts, no view into the personalities or really any aspect of their lives aside from their performance and maybe a fluff piece in a magazine.
That said, I had no idea how intelligent and funny Gene Simmons was. I'm a fan all over again!!

I had developed a less than favorable opinion of Gene Simmons over the years. Loved this episode. I have a new found favorable view of the man. We need good strong minded men at this time in history.

I feel the same. I loved him in Kiss, hated him as a celebrity but here and there the UA-cam bits keep popping up and show that he is quite the multifaceted person. Interviews with him are always interesting and the video where he puts his kiss make-up on his daughter is adorable.

For a party band, KISS is such an influential band for the young men and teens who dreamed of being rock stars, even if the KISS sound and idea wasn't where they ended up. Much love and Gene's reality show was one of the watchable ones for me that really didn't need affected drama to keep me entertained, thanks for giving us a window into your world Mr. Simmons.
Yeah, I tried to stick with his reality show, until his Jeep broke down in the California or Nevada desert and it was none other than Carrot Top to the rescue!🥕🤦🏾

Definitely enjoy how outspoken Gene is.
This reinforces why I’ve been following Bill for decades. It’s not that he preaches the same politics as I do, but rather the tension he elicits from his guests. There was an unexpected amount of tension (though pleasant) between him and Gene in this interview that made for a riveting discussion.
