For all the ups and downs of the series, the finale gave me some moments I will cherish as a fan forever. Things I never thought I would ever see on screen
After the first 4 episodes, I thought the show would just continue to finish meh in the last 2 episodes, but boy did they do a whole 180 on it (except maybe Reva I need to see what they gonna do with her now before judging whether she was good or bad) and I'm glad
Exactly. I hated him at AOTC first (not because of his acting though. Because I had a crush on Padmé xD). Jokes aside he was perfect for the role. I mean Lucas wanted him to portray the character like that and gave him cheesey lines like "I hate sand" and it is your big break you can't say "I'm not saying this line. It is stupid." Unless you are Harrison Ford ofc :D He was the only who didn't care :D
@@orkunkoksal8711 Harrison Ford just has That "No Fucks Given Attitude!!" 😂 I think we all had a crush on Padme in AotC,she was absolutely beautiful and gorgeous in that film
Completely agree. Hayden told us over and over again in interviews leading up to the release as well, Vader is conflicted. He was more anakin in revenge of the sith, more vader in a new hope, here he's more in-between I feel - and I think they did a great job of connecting anakin to vader more. As we tend to see them as different people for good reason, as does vader himself, but that's part of his conflict. What a great character dude lol
@@realriorex Jesus Christ. He's saying that Kenobi didn't make Vader, Vader was already there. People are reading this shit the wrong way. There wasn't nothing sweet or pleasant about it. Kenobi is like a boy that can't hear "no" from a girl when he's asking her out. Kenobi says Anakin, Vader says Anakin is gone, Deaf Kenobi can't hear that, so he doubles down and says I'm sorry ANAKIN then Vader has to say, I'm not your failure OW, you didn't kill AS, I did... ...I'm Vader, I'm the one that's here, not Anakin....
The way Ewen looks so heartbroken seeing what’s left of Anakin for the first time, you see all the love and hurt he feels because he loves Anakin still. One thing I wish, I wish Obi Wan would have mentioned Padme, to see that side of Vader break for Padme, cuz you’re right…he probably just wants to crumble and cry about his lost wife. Anakin was always a sentimental guy, who really only cared about his mom and his wife.
Exactly what I was thinking! However, if he mentioned Padme at all, he would do one of two things! 1: He would probably be infuriated and probably would want to kill Obi Wan even more. He would be conflicted and he wouldn’t even need his life support from his suit to kill him because of all that rage in his mind. 2: He would see the good again. If this was to happen then he would most likely overthrow the Emperor because he now would realize the Emperor had brainwashed him and made him think that Anakin was the one who killed Padme when it was actually the Emperor. Also, Luke’s training probably would not happen and we wouldn’t of learned of Leia or Han or Lando or whoever.
Totally agree. I've always wondered why Padme is sort of forgotten about. I'd have loved to see Vadar/Anakin react to even hearing her name. Also, I know it would've been too great of a risk, but perhaps Obi-Wan telling him that his children survived in this scene also may have led him to turn back to the light. Particularly given his confliction.
@@nvoss3016 not necessarily. Ben says in episode 2 and 3 of the Kenobi series that Leia reminds him of her real mom. As someone else mentioned, perhaps it was too much of a risk for Kenobi to remind Vader about Padme
And he did care about Obi-Wan. Anakin hated Emperor Palpatine with passion. But all Anakin had left was the dark lord of the sith whom he spent most of his time trying to convince that there was none of Anakin skywalker left and he was totally Darth Vader. Mostly out of fear probably, the biggest difference between Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader was that Anakin knew what he was doing was wrong and sometimes didn’t like it.
This scene got me in some feels. Felt bad for Anakin but at the same time growing more hate for Vader for what he has done to Anakin. Seeing the 2 identities physically represented in his eyes was a great touch imo.
This scene was absolutely fantastic. I really liked that his eyes kept changing. It is such a clear sign that some parts of Anakin remain. When Vader says "Anakin is gone, I'm what remains." Oh my god, that line was so good! And of course when we see Anakin's face under the slashed helmet. It was so brutal and emotional for Obi-Wan. One of the best Star Wars scenes, ever!
I remember watching somewhere that Anakin’s main problem was that he could never fully commit to either the light or dark side. It makes me wonder that if Anakin could do it all over again, would he even become a Jedi at all? I don’t think so. I think he’d rather just stay with his mother and somehow just earn their freedom or something.
Becoming a jedi you can't fall in love and you can't have emotional attachments, what kind of life is that for a person and maybe if the jedi allowed these attachments maybe Anakin's downfall could of been avoided!
The problem was the Jedi order wouldn't let him have a choice at all. It's all light side, or nothing in the Jedi eyes. When the solution is actually using both when necessary, not just closing yourself off from one side lf the force. The Jedi deal in absolutes.
I noticed the symbolism straight away with the red and blue, at first I thought it was just a coincidence but seeing others thinking the same backed it up. It was a great moment! Kenobi saying 'Sorry' was pretty heartbreaking, you can genuinely feel the pain and when Darth started to smile I got serious chills.
It seems like the apology served as a catalyst for major internal conflict. Anakin had never heard such an honest and open expression of repentance, asking forgiveness from Obi-Wan, or the Jedi Order, and one can easily imagine how far that would have gone if he had heard something like that before he turned. Obi-Wan had done his best with a hand stacked against him, training Anakin, and if he had let Anakin see that insecurity, alongside his love for him and desire to raise him well, this would all have gone differently, perhaps. I can only imagine thoughts like that causing Vader deep conflict.
I really like that besides the eyes and the reflection of the saber changing color, Vader also sheds a tear with Obi Wan then it transforms into a sadistic smile. An interpretation I heard on Twitter of this scene that I really like is that when Vader tells Kenobi “I am not your failure Obi Wan, you didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker, I did” He’s speaking both as Anakin to comfort his friend and master but also as Vader to taunt Obi Wan and to dismiss any believes that anybody other than Vader himself is what killed Anakin and created Vader if that makes any sense
exactly!!! “I am not your failure Obi Wan, you didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker, I did”. This sentence has a double meaning depending if its Anakin or Vader saying it. I think he speaks BOTH as Vader and Anakin when he says that.
I like that this didn't happen in Rebels when he faced Ahsoka Tano his apprentice. She was a daughter figure yes, but his relationship with Obi-Wan is deep. Ahsoka left in the end. She still loved him but she wasn't there for the ENTIRE thing like Obi-Wan was.
One of the most beautiful, poetic and heartbreaking moments in Star Wars. Vader will always be a wounded animal that was never put down. His pain and suffering allows him to tap into the dark side but his connection to all that he left behind always kept him in the light.
I love it that we have so many little details in this scene between Vader/Anakin and Obi-Wan. When he says "I am not your failure Obi-Wan" the light on his face is blue. It's literally like Anakin is accepting Obi-Wans apology and telling him that it's not his fault. And then it becomes red again when Vader returns, which shows how deep he was in the dark side during this time. If you then pay attention to the change in his voice and his eyes you can literally see that Anakin is not the same as Darth Vader. And the story with the destroyed helmet is interesting too. Obi-Wan got the left half of the helmet and Ahsoka the right half. Thus both could only see half of thee face/Anakin and both weren't able to save him. But Luke took off the helmet as a whole and was therefore the only one who could bring him back in the end. The helmet is a bit of a symbol that hides the side of Anakin that still exists. After that the Emperor did question him on his feelings. Maybe that was the small door opening up Luke needed to get to him in ROTJ - deep down Anakin/Darth Vader didn't want Luke turning over to the dark side.
Yes, agreed. The beauty of this moment is that it would represent the only time Anakin has ever really taken responsibility for his own actions, which would be a huge step in returning to the light. People love to hate on the Jedi for their mistakes with Anakin, but in the end, he was still a person with his own agency, and he made his own choices. He didn’t have to decide to respond the way he did. This flicker of possible admission, after blaming Obi-Wan, the Jedi, and everyone else for his problems, would mean a great deal for his character development.
He literally tells him “ I am what you made me” so the dialogue in this show is all over place. Did Vader/anakin do this himself or obiwan? They need to make their minds up with this.
@@joerampino6303 as star wars theory said Darth Vader only appeared at The Emperor's presence this is shown when he kneels to sidious that obiwan sees it's confirmed his eyes were dark side corruption yellow and red
And yet another reason we NEED a Vader Series/Movie.... I've refused to figure out what's Canon and what's not since the Disney merge... so I'd LOVE to see who Vader is NOW. More so that we ever needed a Full Obi Wan series..
Whoa. A full on Obi-Wan series? That sounds awesome. Like it’ll be a series of him on Tatooine watching over Luke. Giving us a look into what he’s been going through since the war and losing his brother in arms to the dark side? Great idea man!
@@ciderdonuts The full on Obi-Wan series already exists. The last episode came out last week. That series is what this video is referring to. Do yourself a favour and go and watch it!
Vader will transition into female and self identify as padame before becoming non-sith-ary. Weilding a pink light sabre that plays my little pony theme song when they strike with it
The most powerful thing to come out of this show for me and one that actually adds a great deal to the characters we love (Anakin/ Vader and then Obi Wan), if you allow it to become your canon, is that dialogue between the two. Some of the most meaningful moments in fiction are actually the ones which leave room for interpretation! When Anakin/Vader tells Obi that he didn't kill Anakin, but he himself did it (after Obi apologized to him), it almost seems like there is the light side shining through, as if Anakin wants to lift Obi Wan of that burden, of that feeling of guilt. He himself is now taking responsibility for the way things went. I mean, was he really ready to kill Obi Wan? He wanted, but then again he didn't want to. After all he decided to bury him, instead of actually killing him in a way where he can be certain. He then walked away. On the other hand, it could be that telling Obi Wan that he (Vader) killed Anakin, is the dark side, his massive ego really embracing what he has become and owning that path, taking away from Obi Wan that he could possibly have had a part in shaping his future, telling him that he wasn't significant enough so he could have possibly done that, thereby trying to hurt him even more. I personally lean towards the former, also because of Hayden's voice when he said the part about Obi not having any part in it. His voice is soft and sad here. Then again, when he said "I did!" it's realy vadery and kind of evil. For the first part of the sentence his face is covered in blue light and only with the evil "I did" does it turn red. I don't know, maybe its both. The character stays ambivalent after all and holds sort of two peole. So who knows. Either way, seeing Anakin like this and hearing what he had to say, lifted the burden of guilt from Obi Wan and he could finally be free again. Very very powerful scene for me!
I think definitely the latter. Vader really wanted to believe so much that he was in control. Stemming from his lack of control with leaving his mother and having no father figure, being a slave again to the Jedi that abused Anakin's potential and let his mother die...and then not helping when he had visions of his own wife dying. Vader is a broken man who wants to belong...and those are the most easily manipulated.
A perfect descriptive accurate explanation !!! (Palpatine's order to Anakin/Vader) ''Every single Jedi including your friend, Obi Wan Kenobi, is now an Enemy of the republic'' (Anakin/Vader replies) ''I understand'' (That's a lot to deal with and accept in exchange for ''The secrets of the Sith'' but he was definitely struggling with it ''If you're not with me, Then you're my enemy'' He was still conflicted right before their final duel, And highly influenced by the Dark Side emerging once again, Great video as always !!!
The eyes were a great tool for the symbolism of his struggle. Yes, it’s been 10 years. But the terror that Anakin inflicted on others impacted him GREATLY. His terror and his failures. So much! So the eyes were a great idea-along with the voice in and out.
Anakin has a tendency to become destructive when handling feelings of regret. In my opinion, when Anakin says "I am not your failure, Obi Wan.", that's a hint at him remembering things and feeling regret. But just like when he found his mom or found out padme died, he lashed out through dark side driven anger. Just my interpretation though
Something I withdrew from Vader's connection to the dark side is that his conflict with himself can accurately be used to explain his actions over time. When he lost to Obi Wan at the end of Revenge of the Sith for example, he went into what is regarded as his "prime," where his anger connected him to the dark side the most as seen throughout the novels. During the Kenobi series, the interactions between Vader and Obi Wan caused Vader's connection to the dark side to weaken up until the final fight where Vader goes back into a rage (although not as tuned into the dark side as Palpatine senses). His rage is shown to still be present in Rogue One. Finally, when Vader kills Obi Wan in A New Hope, his rage subsides slightly, and along with the passing of time and learning of his children, his mental state becomes perfect for Luke to sway him back towards the light side. Although not perfect or likely intended, it is a neat look from a more psychological take. Just one of the many reasons I love the depth of Vader's character besides his sheer strength and appearance.
Its actually wild when you see anakin in vaders moment shed a tear after seeing obi wan apologize and crying. Its like they’re crying together. But vader is rejecting Anakins soul and emotions to try and force Anakins to stay down and vader above Anakins ego to be fully vader. Its super heart breaking if you think about it.
When Obi-Wan calls Anakin "Darth" at the end of the fight, when we see them fight in episode 4, he calls him "Darth" after Vader said that he killed Anakin, which is what Obi-Wan tells Luke, that Vader killed Anakin.
I like to believe that during their talk with his mask open, he was fully anakin for a little bit, especially after Obi wan told him that he was sorry for everything that happened. I want to believe that when he said “I’m not your failure” it was anakin telling his friend that it’s not his fault that things happened the way they did. Anakin did this to himself. But after telling him that and remembering all his pain from the past, his anger takes over again and he goes back to wanting Obi wan dead
i dont think he genuinely wants to kill Obi-wan he just pushes himself to want to kill Obi-wan through his Vader persona but Anakin persona still resists. Thats the reason he still loses to Obi-wan, he is not fully commited into killing him. Moreover i think he tries to let Vader persona take over as punishment for all the bad things Anakin has done and he is guilty of. Its like him saying i dont deserve to be Anakin, its Vader all i deserve to be. Imo the Vader persona was created out of resentment for all the terrible things Anakin did when he first became a Sith Lord. The Anakin persona is full of guilt and punishes himself by being Vader. Thats the reason he keeps hating himself more than anyone else as he stated in his battle with Darth Maul
I absolutely love the detail of Vader's eyes changing and switching back and fourth between Anikan's Blue and Vader's Sith Yellow. It's a little detail that adds alot of depth to scenes where you do see them. Which is honestly why I feel like in Shards of the past, you did the Bacta Tank/no suit Vader acne better than in the show. It was over all just shot better and seeing his eyes change like that was just fantastic. I also thought it was interesting how you chose to go from yellow when he was scared to blue when he was more calm and focused. All around still shows what great work you did on the fan film.
Another interesting detail is the clothing of Obi Wan: it is grey throughout the series, but after finding his much needed closure regarding Anakin, he is dressed more like his younger self from the prequels.
U can tell when anakin hears “ the im sorry anakin” he’s letting go of the hate for a split second by Hayden’s facial expressions Vader is conflicted by these words.
Yes exactly. It feels like Anakin needed to hear an apology from him. Or empathy. And because Obi Wan was part of his losses (even if Anakin tells himself he hates obi wan he still is his family), it was kinda comforting for him. At least I want to believe that. I mean Palpatine would never talk to Anakin about his pain (Padmes death, lost his child) or his guilt for betraying the jedi.
Yeah no that’s not what happening here. Vader was happy seeing obiwan suffering on what his apprentice has become. There was no anakin here, why else obiwan said “than my friend is truly dead”? He never sensed him. If he did he would have tried to turn him
@@lordvader_0668 cause anakin only came out with Luke. I mean obiwan literally, literally just said “my friend is truly dead”. If anakin was there he would have tried his hardest to turn him but no anakin was never there. He never appeared out. It was all Vader. Y’all need to chill on every scene that shows Vader saying “omg did you see that anakin came out there😱”. It literally takes away the whole Luke skywalker ark where he is the ONLY one in years since the revenge of the sith that could take the most evil person have anakin skywalker come out and turn him.
@@venom8598 bro I’m not saying anakins there 😭😂. I said a split second. U can literally see his face contorting after hearing obi wan’s apology. If this was fully 100000 percent Vader he wouldn’t even care what obi wan just said.
The entire fight between Anakin and Obi Wan is poetical. It’s a throwback to the legends between 2 opposing forces that simply can’t undo each other. You have to think of myths and legends like Ahriman vs Ahura Mazda, Thor vs Loki, Zeus vs Hades..
YES, EVEN SHEEV SAID! “Perhaps your feelings for your old master have left you weakened” clearly means anakin felt something for obi wan in that moment. We NOW NEED ANAKIN AND OBI WAN FORCE GHOST TOGETHER AGAIN IN AHSOKA AFTER THIS SAD MOMENT😭😭I still keep thinking about it 😭😂

Great viewpoints. I agree. I've been watching, pause, watching, pause, over & over disecting the saber color reflections to the voice deflections, eye color changes to subtle differences in voice cadence ( Anakins differs from Vaders). These few minutes are brilliance by the writers & director. There are so many layers. "I am not your failure," was Anakin. But immediately after that was Vader. It's rare when one sees something on film that cannot be duplicated to a better degree in a book (book versions are usually better). They freaking nailed it.
I believe that Anakin was coming to the surface for a brief moment - you can see the inner conflict of Anakin. The good in him is still there, but then Vader comes back out. This is literally a representation of how deep he is in the dark side at that time.
It truly is poetic. Throughout his life after ep 3 he has nothing but Palpatine, and the dark side and its powers. Vader lost everything else anf Palpatine made sure vader always knew that. Vader only had one road he could walk on which was tapping into and studying the dark side to become stronger which he did, and slower anakin was dying out because what did he have left to exist for? Vader would submerge himself in the dark side meditation and revenge on Palpatine to keep anakin at bay and it worked but every now and then, it wasn't enough like in this moment.
i love when vader and palpatine where speaking and palps said “if your past cannot be overcome” vader knew what he was going to say after (then you are of no use to me) so he sits up straight and says kenobi means nothing but palps knows hes lying
When he says "You did not kill Anakin Skywalker...." the moment he says "I did," his voice and face shifts and he has an evil grin. This part struck me as a clear split where he was Anakin Anakin Anakin Anakin "I did!" -Vader. I think he was able to draw on the Dark Side by seeing Obi-Wan crying at everything that had happened, and wanted to, even in his weak moment, come off strong and crass by saying something which would be so painful for Obi-Wan to hear and then to see Anakin's face shift into an evil grin just added insult to injury to the emotional blow he gave Obi-Wan.
He doesn’t WANT to “win”. Neither does Obi Wan. They rather live hating each other then have to live without each other. Yes. This is why he lost in ROTS. He didn’t want to kill Obi Wan. He wanted Obi Wan to believe in him. He wants Obi Wans approval. He wants his master to be impressed with him. But Obi Wan keeps walking away. 🙁 Luke stays. 🥰
Agreed! At this point in his life, Anakin/Vader is still a roiling cocktail of love and hate for Obi-Wan. He's stuck in an ongoing tug-of-war between "I hate you!! I will destroy you!!" and "Come back, I need you!!" Neither he nor Obi-Wan can stand to live with one another as they are now, but neither can they bring themselves to actually go through with killing each other. As you said, they'd rather live fearing and hating one another...than having to live without each other.
We can also see they blue light from the lightsaber of Obi-Wan dissapear while the red light is becoming stroner, symbolising the big distance between Anakin and his close friend, which is now getting bigger, and the power that Palpatine and the dark Side have inside Anakins soul.We can even see the reflection of red on Obi-Wan's face symbolising him understanding that there is nothing left from his old friend, than hatred and anger. This is actually the point were Obi-Wan is physically reborn.
Whenever I have a theory while watching anything Star Wars first I contact my buddies then I wait for this genius to confirm my thoughts and 9/10 times he confirms what I was already thinking! Love this channel so much!
I love that they did changing eye colors for Anakin turning into his Vader side now in the Kenobi series. The Grand Inquisitor also changed eye color there in the first episode when he sensed there was a jedi close. Im so happy that they had those new scenes where we could see Obi-Wan training Anakin and also that we got to see Qui-Gon at the end of the series, so beautiful.
Kenobi had its issues but there are moments of absolute greatness in it. I always had an issue connecting Anakin from the prequels to the Darth Vader but they fixed that with voices mixing perfectly. That was genius and is up there with one of my favourite Star Wars Moments
I like to believe anakin said "i'm not your failure, Obi-Wan" because he was his own failure. He betrayed and was betrayed. He knows he screwed up and it's his own fault.
This episode also mirrors ROTS on mustafar when he killed the separatist he was sporting those yellow eyes, then after reflecting on what he had just done they went back to being blue as a tear came down.
It's interesting "how quickly" Anakin's eyes were able to turn "Sith yellow" in Revenge of the Sith, considering that he hadn't received any "Sith training" from the time Palpatine executed Order 66 to the time the audience sees his yellow eyes. I guess that a Force-sensitive's eyes "turn yellow" when they're full of negative emotions.
It’s definitely about emotion and action and not training. Dooku was a sith and didn’t have sith eye anakin had already started going down the dark path after killing tuskens in ep 2 and had dark emotions but didn’t give in to them until order 66
The way Vader says he killed anakin makes him sound possessed. Which makes the whole thing so much darker to me. You can really see in obi wans face how he completely gives up hope in that moment. And I always wondered why he calls him “darth” In the first movie and Im pretty sure it was just an oversight at the time but in the final episode obi wan calls Vader “darth” which comes across as so disrespectful. He doesn’t call him Vader or any other name associated with him just “darth”. It made that scene in the first movie where he calls Vader “darth” make sense. Very nice
Anakin definitely has the most interestingly complex character arcs in the entire Star Wars franchise. The reason why I say this is because in the prequels, it was inevitable that he will turn to the darkside to become Darth Vader. Even as a true fan of this franchise, I too find it hard to analyze both his and Vader's characters when it comes to interpreting both their identities from time to time.

Well he was the chosen one, he should be able to just let the force flow, he was conflicted when he was a Jedi and he's still conflicted as a Sith because the force isn't pure light or dark, no good, no evil... the force is the force and that's it but that's something the jedi and the Sith cannot seem to understand, Qui-Gon should've trained him.
Yeah but Qui Gon died and we wouldn't have the epic story and internal struggles if he trained Anakin. Qui Gon new the Jedi we're not what they should have been, and that there was only the Force not a hard line between the Light and Dark. That's why other Jedi looked down on Qui Gon and viewed him as a rebel and in some cases even a "grey" Jedi.
To be fair, Lucas himself clarified that balance in the Force meant the harmony of the light side, not a balance between light and dark. The Grey Jedi thing doesn’t really fit the way Lucas thought of the Force when he wrote the films. If Qui-Gon’s way is superior, it’s because he is more able to live in the light side than other Jedi, not because he lives between light and dark.
@@joerampino6303 Well yes, you're right about that one but at one point the jedi start denying the dark instead of just acknowledge it as a part of the force itself, I suppose that builds up frustration and turns someone as powerful as anakin into... well we all know, at the end the balance and the harmony wasn't mastered by any jedi or at least not from the Skywalker saga, Qui-Gon was getting there but he got killed :c
I kinda like Dave Filoni's explanation of Vader and Anakin's dichotomy, that Anakin's shame and guilt are so great that he just can't face it so he hides behind the Vader persona so he doesn't have to face it. Which is kind of how Dissociative Personality Disorder works but IRL people with DPD don't remember what the other personality does. But I definitely think hearing Obi-Wan's tearful apology touched Anakin in a way he couldn't entirely hide because his anger toward Obi-Wan was a part of what drove him.
Great scene. One of the best in star wars but this entire series has so many lows unfortunately. Hayden should have had way more screen time in my opinion. More flashbacks between him and obi wan would have made that final scene between the two hit much harder.

Seeing the switch back and forth gives a haunting feeling like anakin is possessed by Vader. I've always viewed anakin/Vader as a split personality but this scene gives me the feeling like Vader is a separate entity altogether which is scary, and badass.
I’ve see it like a Dissociative Identity Disorder. He pushed back this dark version of himself his whole life. And he finally let it take over when he decided to fall to the dark side. And the only way he can cope and deal with the terrible things he would need to do he created this other identity in his mind. Which became Darth Vader and eventually it fully took over. And Anakin was still alive inside him but buried and Luke eventually pulled Anakin back out. And that’s why his force ghost was younger Anakin because that’s how old he was before the Darth Vader identity took over.
I see it as there is still conflict in Vader. The side of him that is still Anakin, is fighting to come out. It also can be pointed to why Palpatine asks Vader if his feelings regarding Obi Wan are clear.
I'm not all too surprised that Vader was conflicted here in the last episode, because he was the exact same way with Ahsoka in Rebels when they fought, giving himself a moment to call out to Ahsoka before dueling her again. Difference being, he maintained his Sith Eyes the entire time
I scrolled for a while finding nothing so I'd like to touch on the dialogue that was most heart wrenching for me in the fight scene. At the very end of their post fight conversation, Anakin/Darth yells out for Obi-Wan two last times before Obi is too far away. To me the "Obi-Wan" was emitted very longingly and was heart achingly similar in tone to when he was in Mustafar on fire. It left me questioning myself and asking "What if Obi walked back when hearing that?" "Did Obi prolong Anakin's suffering by missing a potential reconciliation?" In my perspective, Anakin yelling for Obi left room for interpretation to imagine what it could have been like had Obi not been so sure that Anakin was gone.
I think that anakin gave obi wan a bit of relief and finally let go of himself to become Vader. Once the red lightsaber was on his face Vader had fully taken over until Luke brought him back.
With the line "I'm not your failure, Obi-Wan" Anakin is basically telling him "It's not your fault." Calling back to the line in Episode 3. He then blames himself and basically forgives him before Vader and the dark side take over and cover his feelings in hatred. What's your opinion on that?
This just occurred to me - wasn't there an unfinished scene between Anakin & Obi-wan after Ahsoka left? And Anakin says sormthing about "and what if I failed you". Could it also be a callback to that, perhaps?
Hayden absolutely nailed it here. Glad he is back along with Ewan. And now Disney+ come on.. give us a Vader Series !!!! Where we see him hunting the remaining Jedis, seeing him train and struggle in his Suit etc. There are so many fantastic storylines
I do disagree, I truly believe that it was Anakin saying "I am not your failure Obi-Wan" but then Vader takes over. Darth Vader talks about Anakin being a different person, so why would he say "I am not your failure"? I love the videos and the theories, keep up the good work. 🔥
I feel that’s exactly why he says I’m not your failure obi wan, because it’s not Anakin he is talking to. It’s Darth Vader. So of course he wouldn’t see himself as Obi wans failure
@@brandonsmith7827 it's great that so many people have so many different interpretations. This will keep us all talking for years to come. @@xXMINIJARVISXx I mean, it honestly could mean what you say, I just don’t see it as what happened, I do believe it’s ambiguous enough to say both sides can honestly be right in this situation. @@xXMINIJARVISXx anakin was never there in this scene. If so it would have ruined the whole Luke ark that he was the only one to have anakin to appear out of Vader since episode3. I didn’t see a color switch happening between “You didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker,” and “I did.” The lighting was the same throughout both, and his mood/ expression appeared to be the same as well. It is certainly possible that subconsciously the first part of that sentence was Anakin talking, but there is no explicit evidence for this. His expressions were different when he said “Anakin Skywalker is gone. I am what remains,” and “I am not your failure, Obi Wan.” He didn’t look evil as he was saying that. He looked hurt. In addition, the blue-red mix here was the same as when he had a more evil looking expression. So as much as it’s nice to think color had a purpose here, I’m not quite sure Disney really did try to be that detailed about the color symbolism. If they were, then I don’t think the color switches were at the right times during that interaction. If anything, it seems maybe the only symbolism was just red and blue mixing in general.
Completely agree. The conflict within himself is strong. Family is one of the most important things to Anakin (even as Vader). From his mom, to Padme, to his unborn children. The root of Anakin was to protect his family. His conversations with Luke, even in the middle of a duel, didn’t want to defeat him. He wanted his son to be with him. Dad Vader.
It's really weird for me thinking that people didn't catch the meaning of the eyes changing. It's literally showing his internal struggle. It's like Green Goblin in the Maguire movies
Hate to be that guy, but his eyes were the same color the whole time. It was just the blue/purple light against his yellow/red eyes that made them appear darker (but they were never blue), then the red light made them much more distinguished and creepy looking. Red objects reflect red light, and absorb the rest. Colors appear black when you shine the opposite light on them. (Turn the lights off and shine a green light on a red object to see what I mean)
I thought there was a great opportunity missed by the writers when Palpatine addresses Vader's clarity of his intentions at the end, by not asking him right after, "and I wonder if you truly do want to kill Kenobi, Lord Vader". It would have "poetically rhymed" with Reva's question to Kenobi, asking him if he truly wanted to kill Anakin. Hinting that he (Kenobi), would be dead already if Vader was truly and fully dark side. Further establishing the point for the audience that Vader's failure is only because there is still some light left buried in him.
Like Meg in Hercules “people do stupid things, when they’re in love” Vader will always be my favorite villain cuz there is so many layers to him. He is not just out right evil. He had reasons behind everything he did, and usually it was a reason of love.
"The path to hell is paved with good intentions." Regardless of his intentions, the galaxy suffered from his indecisiveness. In the end, we are defined by our choices... no matter how our story began.
Vaders theme tune comes fully in at the end while on the throne after talking to Sidious to say that he has now made a deeper commitment to be Vader and let go of Anakin. From the conclusion of their fight Vader is now more Vader and Obi Wan is more Obi Wan (his happy empowered self again). They both evolved from the fight.
When you say that the emperor wanted Vader to give into the Dark-side completely I have to disagree. I think The Palpatine wanted Vader to remain conflicted, That is why Palpatine wanted Vader to bring Luke to him... I don't think Palpatine wanted Luke, I think he wanted to keep Vader in constant inner Turmoil. This way he would always have a weaker apprentice that was never a threat to him.
agree 100%. If Palpatine really wanted he would have forced Vader to completely embrace the dark side by telling him lies about the Jedi or by orchestrating events to make it look like the Jedi r bad. Palpatine really wants Vader to struggle and keep him in conflict, he tries to fuel his connection to the dark force but not too much. There is method to what Palpatine does. Palpatine almost never insults him or directly tells him to stop giving a damn about Obi-Wan or the Jedi, i dont think he really wants his Anakin persona completely gone off the picture, just be pushed away as much as Vader persona can be in charge but he wants the Anakin persona to still exist so that Vader can always be a lesser version of his true Sith self. Palpatine just pretends he cares about Vader's full connection to the dark force and him being truly evil when in reality he just doesnt want this to happen. Palpatine is like the bad teacher who wants his students to keep paying him money for the lessons he gives them so he pretends he teaches them a few things from time to time but in reality he just doesnt care to share knowledge with them.
Anakin is inherently a troubled person, I’m not sure I would say he’s good or bad. At his core he is good natured but at his core he is also selfish since he is fear-based in thinking so it’s hard to say. It comes down to a nature vs nurture with Anakin, was he doomed no matter what when he left Tatooine as a little boy because he was severely abused growing up? Or was it the Jedi order not considering his trauma? - sorry for the rant I just find the character so interesting 😅
I think he still would have been a very troubled person due to his childhood and all of mental and emotional issues he has from that. But a lot of his trouble in the story comes from being manipulated by Palpatine which made his already bad traits a lot worse.
A Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker movie or mini series should in reality happen with this show really showing that Anakin Skywalker as a young boy all the way until his death in Return of the Jedi always had Darth Vader within himself because he always had this borderline personality disorder, or bipolar to even a multiple personality disorder which in reality are common in the real world even for the most intelligent or brightest and more successful people in the real world. Showing this vulnerability of Anakin Skywalker, the chosen one or a very powerful force user and highly powerful leader is really a reality in the real world not just a fantasy world like Star Wars. Will Disney do this probably not because I don't think that they have the creative writing to do this but this would be a perfect solution to the Anakin Skywalker Darth Vader personality disorder and relatable story for many people in the real world.
What really irritates me? Ben could see that eye color change. He was on the verge of coming back to the light side. When Vader had asked "are you here to kill me", he should have confirmed he was there to bring him back to the light side, and that there was good inside of him. And at the end when the eye color change could be seen? Instead of reaching out more, and giving him hope that hes not going to be forgotten and left alone if he comes back to the light side. Right when he was tilting back and forth, he tells him "then my friend is truly gone"!? Vader is the product of his masters incompetence, among other things.
Well as for everything else I agree with. And yeah cinematically probably why but his voice changing in and out was just his suit and everything being f*ked up, turning on and off, I really thought it was cool how they allowed that to happen and how they brought that to life was really cool hearing him switch in and out.
No wonder Hayden Christiansen says this Vader is very conflicted, he's still struggling to get rid of Anakin.

That scene was done well, even if it was similar to the Rebel scene with Ashoka.
Going from vader to Anakin when he said “I am not your failure”. Deep down Anakin still remains
dun dun dun!
I still haven’t been able to emotionally recover 😭😭
Of course Anakin is still there we could see it many times not only here and in Rotj but also in comics and durning his meeting with Ashoka.
it's almost like Anakin is trying to give Kenobi reprieve from his perceived failure. Quite sad, really.
@@realriorex Jesus Christ. He's saying that Kenobi didn't make Vader, Vader was already there. People are reading this shit the wrong way. There wasn't nothing sweet or pleasant about it.
He didn’t “only” care about his mom and wife. He cared for everybody around him.
@@jermainehaslam5634 He should have just left, they showed us with Ashoka that was definitely the thing to do differently

@@OscarASevilla The Sith deal in absolutes.
The seeds of change
I really like that besides the eyes and the reflection of the saber changing color, Vader also sheds a tear with Obi Wan then it transforms into a sadistic smile.
An interpretation I heard on Twitter of this scene that I really like is that when Vader tells Kenobi “I am not your failure Obi Wan, you didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker, I did”
He’s speaking both as Anakin to comfort his friend and master but also as Vader to taunt Obi Wan and to dismiss any believes that anybody other than Vader himself is what killed Anakin and created Vader if that makes any sense
His eyes did change back to blue for a moment in Rebels though.
It was also a few years after this so he would've fallen even further by the point he fights Ahsoka.
Yeah maybe but I think that his eyes did change for Ahsoka as well
Hardly a daughter figure, more of a sister.
@@zakkmylde1712 no they didn't
Yes I always interpret it that obi wan and ahsoka both helped push Vader into the light but only luke can bring him completely from the dark

Bro there’s literally 6 movies about anakin and vader
Canon is what DISNEY says it is. Not you not Lucas etc
@@tylorsmith7580 Watch out for your blood pressure Tylor. Your getting all worked up.
Seeing those two, eye to eye again, for the first time since EP3 gives you chills.
I agree 100 percent.
Yes, it was heartbreaking and took us back to the end of EP3.
It shows us that Anakin was never fully dead.
yup
Yes, even tho Vader always insist he’s destroyed him. Clearly he never did, he tells luke “ you were rigjy about me” tell your sister you were right “
Indeed , otherwise Luke would have failed.
Anakin in some way was always enslaved.
Anakin said you didnt kill anakin then darth came out and said i did
I absolutely love the detail of Vader's eyes changing and switching back and fourth between Anikan's Blue and Vader's Sith Yellow.
You're fan film was awesome dude. The guy playing Sidious looked like he was having alot of fun.

Duh..
He obivously wanted to kill him in ep3 and finished his job in ep4
@@blopp6240 yep. They keep making Vader soft, he killed obi wan in ANH
@@TakaraoftheElves almost like his lgbtq representative
@@Cts_99 well obviously he can’t actually kill him because obi wan has plot armor
Thank you for always giving us your input. Still looking forward to your video of Episode 2.
Absolutely loved this scene, cinematic masterpiece if you ask me
Yeah, lots of emotion in that scene. great acting as well.
This scene was poetry in a motion film. The sudden light changes his eyes, what voice was more dominant when he was talking was so fucking good man
I love that they did changing eye colors for Anakin turning into his Vader side now in the Kenobi series.
Love your takes Theory, Happy Sunday, and Happy 4th Everybody!🇺🇲
Your darth sidious voice is REALLY GOOD man
I like to believe anakin said "i'm not your failure, Obi-Wan" because he was his own failure.
Burning alive certainly helps lol
Off topic but can we appreciate theory's "Darth" face when doing the palpatine voice? Shit cracks me up
The way Vader says he killed anakin makes him sound possessed. Very nice
Yoooo @star wars theory that right there was very dope deep dive. Thanks.
Just wanted to say thanks for uploading man.
Exactly @Lord Vader. As exemplified especially in the clone wars episode of the Father and his two children.
Your logic is always mature and sound. I do enjoy what you do sir
It was an emotional scene. Very well done. So haunting.
Yes...two actors at the top of their game.
The second eye in the thumbnail scared me the first time I saw it and what he said alongside that gave me chills
35 Second's Shard's of the Past!!!!! I Love these videos General Theory your Knowledge of how Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader work's is Awesome 🤘 I Definitely think he was still Conflicted Blue and Sith eye's, On one hand you got Your Brother/Best Friend, On the other He's The Enemy who put You in The Suit, Great Video 🤘💙🌋
Seeing the switch back and forth gives a haunting feeling like anakin is possessed by Vader. I've always viewed anakin/Vader as a split personality but this scene gives me the feeling like Vader is a separate entity altogether which is scary, and badass.
Even thought it's really weird seeing vader and anakin fight again between 3 and 4, seeing Haydens face in the suit was awesome
Never heard someone so accurately describe the Anakin/Vader dynamic. Good shit.
His sinister grin at obi wan when he said you didn't kill anakin.. "I DID" .. MESSED ME UP 🔥😳🔥
With the line "I'm not your failure, Obi-Wan" Anakin is basically telling him "It's not your fault." Calling back to the line in Episode 3.
It was Vader’s way of saying “don’t give yourself so much credit, I did all the work here.”
@@brandonsmith7827 it's great that so many people have so many different interpretations. This will keep us all talking for years to come.
Although I do believe initially he was talking to Anakin not Vader because the blue glow on his face. Why would the director go through the effort of changing the glow colour if it didn't mean anything.
@@xXMINIJARVISXx I mean, it honestly could mean what you say, I just don’t see it as what happened, I do believe it’s ambiguous enough to say both sides can honestly be right in this situation. One thing that does add to your argument more than the lightsaber reflections is that vaders eyes aren’t initially sith eyes when he first starts talking.
@@xXMINIJARVISXx anakin was never there in this scene. If so it would have ruined the whole Luke ark that he was the only one to have anakin to appear out of Vader since episode3. If anakin was here obiwan would have felt it and would have tried for anakin to fight it and come back but no he literally tells him my friend is truly dead
Bro it’s in the middle in the night I have nothing to do and there is nothing better then a new Star Wars theory video
This is why I love starwars! Rarely see such details in other show's
Also once you commit to the dark side it’s hard to come back. Why he is conflicted. He always felt he could never come back to the light.
Yeah, once you make a bad choice or bad choices, it's hard to get back on track.
@@chrisevans212 you are that guy and youre wrong
@@chrispember172 dude idk man I looked hard
@@chrisevans212 You're correct.
That little subtle head tilt that Anakin did before saying “I am not your failure Obi-Wan” was such a Anakin thing. It’s the little things
Like Meg in Hercules “people do stupid things, when they’re in love”
Vader will always be my favorite villain cuz there is so many layers to him. He is not just out right evil. He had reasons behind everything he did, and usually it was a reason of love.
So true.... the best villains in cinema and literature all think they are right and have their own reasoning.
"The path to hell is paved with good intentions."
Regardless of his intentions, the galaxy suffered from his indecisiveness.
In the end, we are defined by our choices... no matter how our story began.
this guys needs more likes his theory are so amazing
Beautiful scene.
Did not notice the eyes turning...love your thinking on this!
I hope there will be a season 2 of obi wan
true
Darth Vader should have killed Reva like Anakin killed Count Dooku by using two light sabers, in episode 3, Revenge Of The Sith.
@@Space_Rebel Yea I agree, would have been cool
Vaders theme tune comes fully in at the end while on the throne after talking to Sidious to say that he has now made a deeper commitment to be Vader and let go of Anakin. From the conclusion of their fight Vader is now more Vader and Obi Wan is more Obi Wan (his happy empowered self again). They both evolved from the fight.
The transition over to those classic musical themes by Williams was great.
You're spot on, man. Nice review.
You 100% inspired Disney when they were writing this scene
Even Jeremy Jahns mention this aspect in his review of the Kenobi show! A couple of details were from Theory's fan film!
Love your vids and this is a beautiful analysis of this incredible detail
This was a very cool scene
very
Love the conversation between them. always wanted that in ROTS.
