@@henryhopton2944 That is exactly why I can't wait :D He's gonna light up like a christmas tree listening through the many awesome moments on that record. Which track is your favorite, Henry?
this is by far my FAVORITE elliott smith album. partially bc of my personal journey, but some of your 'lowlights' are what make the album so special to me. rather than a 'smooth, consistent' listen, the ups & the downs, to this day, thrill me like a rollercoaster ride. and some of the 'lows' - for me - come in surprising places, i.e. the peak/crescendo of EverythngMeansNothng2Me is a 'high point' in a way, sonically, etc, but contextually, lyrically, it's a devastating nihilistic-almost sad boi anthem in a way other more melancholy songs couldnt hope to be. i coupd go on, but i say all this to get to the fact that this was a great video & a joy to watch/listen to
Yeah, Can´t make a sound is incredible Soooo many times I wanted to cry while hearing the "Why should you want any other when you're a world within a world". English is not my first language, so I usually look up lyrics, but for some reason with this one I just didn´t. And when I did, holly crap, I wanted to cry so hard
i'm glad you enjoyed the album! this one's my favorite from all time. it took some time and many listens for it to get there, also growing and going through more life experiences that made me appreciate the meaning of the lyrics and the existencial mood they put me in. excited to hear about your announcement and the changes you'll be making to your channel!
Great review, I like Figure 8 but it’s not my favorite album of his. My favorite album is his last album, From a basement on a hill. I hope you get a chance to listen to it soon, judging by the fact that you seem to enjoy his more Rock like songs I bet you’ll love his last album, keep an eye out for King’s Crossing(best Elliott song ever). Love your reviews, keep them coming!
I've really been enjoying your Elliott Smith reaction vids! I had a feeling this would be your favorite with the more sophisticated production and orchestration but can't argue with XO being the overall fave. Can't Make a Sound is my favorite track as well, just kills me every time. A few fun facts that I hope add to future relistening experiences: You were right on in saying that the Easy Way Out has earlier Elliott vibes, it seems that he wrote this quite a bit earlier than most of the other tracks on the album (first known recording made in 1996) although some rewriting occurred between then and the album release. There is another version of Pretty Mary K that sounds completely different (included on the posthumous compilation album New Moon). Personally I strongly prefer the early version and maybe you will too, check it out! Son of Sam is about David Berkowitz, a serial killer who was active in the 70s. This album was recorded in Abbey Road Studios! I find it very cool that Smith got to record there as he was a huge fan of the Beatles (particularly Lennon) and you can definitely hear more of that pop influence here :)
The beautiful thing to me is I think Elliott was very involved in production and orchestration. Makes me feel closer to him when listening. Schnapf was less a mediator of Elliott and more a collaborator.
One of the greatest albums ever made up there with Elton John Captain Fantastic, Genesis Selling Englang by the Pound, todd rundgren Wizard True Star....masterpiece of music.
You gotta do From a Basement on the Hill! It may be a little jarring at first, but it’s SOOO good! That’s the last of of his albums, but New Moon is a really great compilation of b-sides that’s 100% worth a listen too
So , you know the way Elliott sings and then the guitar plays what he just sang? Yeah I love it too, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks does the same, check em out
OMG I can't wait to see your reaction to Shooting Star and King's Crossing. You gotta do From a Basement on the Hill ASAP. Even though it wasn't fully done when he died and the producers made it a little safer than he would have (all info about it suggests he wanted it raw as fuck) I love it.
I think you would enjoy the album Quasi: Featuring Birds. Sam Coomes from Quasi, provided backing vocals and instruments often, on Elliott Smith albums. Great channel and enjoy your commentary.
He is awesome. At the age of 16-20 I listened to it when I went skateboarding. I was born in 90. I am 33 years old. Just imagine that Kurt, that Elliot One in 27 has already retired.Another at 33. This is God's gift. They are talented.
Everything means nothing to me honestly feels like one of his most abstract lyric wise to me , still haven’t really been able to pin point the meaning of everything in that track lyrically
My brother in Christ, I pray you find your way to doing a reaction for New Moon sometime soon. A bunch of unreleased tracks, mostly from the self-titled and Either/Or sessions, a lot of which rival songs on those very albums. It's kind of a double album, but it's under 80 minutes and is sure to feature tracks you'll adore, much like many other Elliott releases. And then, on your own time, enjoy the Grand Mal bootleg, which features officially unreleased studio material that is some of the best work he's ever done. Sadly, it's too long of a "release" to do a reaction for. But tracks like Dancing on the Highway, Abused, and See You in Heaven are some of his best work. Hope you get to enjoy these tracks soon!
I think Gotye was an Elliott a Smith fan. His album with the song called "Somebody that I used to know" has another song titled "Easy Way Out" too. I don't think that's a coincidence.
If and when you get to New Moon- you should react Going Nowhere, New Disaster and Go By. Those are the 3 highlights off that album. The rest of the album is pretty "meh". It's mainly stuff that didn't make Either/Or and his self titled album. Those 3 songs I mentioned are 3 of my favorites of his entire catalogue though.
Yeah can’t make a sounds the best track on that one, always found this album a bit muddle and over produced, prefer xo in terms of his bigger sounding albums
This album was a revelation to me
Judging by this lads reaction to 'Can't Make A Sound' I think he might enjoy Basement.
Excited for From A Basement On A Hill
Look for Elliott Smith - Dancing on the Highway and you'll have your wish on 13:50 granted.
Seconded. Prefer the alt mix too as the loop is present throughout the song.
Now you KNOW you have to cover "From a Basement on the Hill", right? ;D can't wait!
so so so excited for that reaction, basement is easily my personal favorite
and new moon
thatll be his favorite

@@maddeypuppets understated for sure! new moon is a stellar collection.

I watched this while eating sushi it was fun
I approve of this lol
Loved your reaction to the build up for Everything Means Nothing to Me. That song is absolutely crazy.
I love watching people react to Elliott, I remember the first time I found him I became totally obsessed (still am 5 years later😅😅)

this is my forever favorite elliott album🥹 i have a tattoo of the cover art on my back.
4:24 "Is that a bell??" I NEVER NOTICED THE BELL OMG
The "Son of Sam" reaction was literally mine, what a fantastic opener

I found this series yesterday best time to bc I was hoping you would continue the series so I have great luck ha ha

A fellow King's Crossing enjoyer. I approve.
Check out Dancing On The Highway. That’s where he put “The Roost” to good use
hell yeah man I love this album!!
Great album!! I’m glad your getting into Elliott Smith
Haha, love that you loved "Can't Make A Sound". It's the ultimate shower song. Peace always.
hey man great vid hope your doing well
This album is fantastic. I love this album so much. Lucky i have this album in all version format official : cassette, cd, vinyl❤❤❤❤
Wait till you here from a basement the hill. Probably his best album. Posthumously released of course.

You have great ears and great taste, kid.

Elliott’s playing the drums by the way!
Yeah I mean 5 out of 16
I love a good fade out, especially on an Elliott track but I have many friends that don’t care for them so much. To each their own.

I LOVE your account it’s literally my comfort acc, I was just going to find a perfect video to watch before going to sleep and here you are
Sounds a bit cheesy but kinda wanted to express my gratefulness
This is so wholesome omg thank you so much :,) I’m really happy to help!

You're still the definition of a tryhard lol
I’m excited for new moon and basement on a hill
new moon please 😢 It's my favorite
You gotta find Elliott doing the song figure eight they wouldn’t let him put it on the album cuz it’s a cover
I think Gotye was an Elliott a Smith fan. His album with the song called "Somebody that I used to know" has another song titled "Easy Way Out" too. I don't think that's a coincidence.
FABOTH next please
Why haven’t you done “From A Basement on a Hill” yet?
We had the same reaction to everything means nothing to me 😂
Tom Holland react to Elliott Smith. Awesome!!!
You should listen to Pretty Mary K off of New Moon, its much better than the Figure 8 version imo
If and when you get to New Moon- you should react Going Nowhere, New Disaster and Go By. Those are the 3 highlights off that album. The rest of the album is pretty "meh". You should listen to soundtracks for the blind
I find that this album has several amazing songs, but it's a bit too long and it loses me in the latter half.
Yeah can’t make a sounds the best track on that one, always found this album a bit muddle and over produced, prefer xo in terms of his bigger sounding albums
this is not at all his best album, I would put it at number 4 maybe?
