Now you gotta listen to his other 5 albums. RIP Elliott, greatest of all time. If I can make a request, listen to the album that came out after he died, From a basement on the hill.
For me, Ballad of Big Nothing is about how you shouldn’t turn your emotions, or lack of emotions, into anger. You can do what you whenever you want to because you’re able to justify your actions to yourself, but as long as you act like that you really are just a big nothing. I was going through a rough patch when I was really pulling myself apart to try and fix everything. This song helped me find peace in nihilism. I used to use nihilism as a reason to be really unpleasant and angry to everyone and was just miserable to be around. Then I listened to Ballad of Big Nothing and it felt like he was talking about me and the pit of hatred for everyone and everything I was carrying around inside me. It was just one of the many things that helped me through that time, but the impression that song left on me is going to stick around for a while Sorry for the tangent.
Great video. One thing I will say is that you many times said he was critiquing things, but really I think a lot of his more music lies in greyer areas. To me they are simple observations. Not that they're objective or try to be, but just that they're less about passing judgement on things. One thing to note is that Elliot Smith was really depressed for most of his life, but it also wasn't his only personality trait. Many friends and people who met him remembered him as a fun loving book nerd who just liked to make people laugh, but was also super self deprecating. My favorite Elliot Smith line is in Rose Parade where he says, "And when they clean the streets I'll be the only shit that's left behind". I think a lot of the times his music is pretty insecure and judgemental about himself but not really others.
Something to note about the songs that are about “drug addiction”, is that Elliott himself spoke about his songs having themes of dependency, whether it be drugs, habits, even other people
Great reactions mate, keep em coming. I think you would like Ants From Up There - Black Country, New Road too, it's an insanely good art rock record from just last year. It's also very highly rated on sites like rym.
you absolutely should listen to more of elliott, XO, from a basement on the hill and new moon are my favourites. But figure 8, his self titled and roman candle are great too THEYRE ALL SO GOODD
Listen to Heatmiser!! Its Elliot Smith's band before he went solo. They are excellent my favorite album by them is Mic City Sons. Many bangers on that album.
Great thing about Elliott is his songs mean different things to different people. However most people agree on certain interpretations of various songs you can have your own interpretation and be just as correct. When it comes to Angeles, I think its about the allure of fame and the sinister dealings in show business. Cupid's Trick to me is about Elliott's uncomfortable feelings around sex.
If you love Elliott you need to check out Bright Eyes, and great singer songwriter. Rilo Kiley is another great band to check out. Their last track on More Adventurous is a tribute to Elliott.
Please don't stop reacting to progressive rock or anything that is rock or metal, i just love your reactions, like , most youtubers i watch are forcing their reactions and your channel just hits different, thanks o/
Elliott Smith struggled with abuse, drug addiction and mental illness. He stabbed himself to death. All of his music is worth a listen. He's a treasure as an artist. Forever missed and loved.
fun fact: my friends aunt knew elliott when they were working at hot lips pizza in portland and they almost dated. apparently she decided to date some skater boy instead
dude cant believe that you said that it sounded like he was recording speed trials while someone was asleep bc that is actually what was happening while he recorded 😭😭 i assume you didn’t know that since you said you knew nothing about him.
The album has saved me forrealzies twice… my eldest cat who’s been with me for 9 years, has woken up from a nap to come stare at me to make sure I’m not having a panic attack. I’ve used this album to remind me I’m not alone feeling this crap. RIP 🖤❤️🩹🖤❤️🩹
You should listen to "Seance" by The Church, its one of my favourite albums of all time, there is a couple duds like "Electric Lash" and "Travel By Thought", but songs like "Dissapear?", "Electric", "Fly" and "One Day" really make it shine, its dark and gloomy at times, at others it sounds dated since it was made 1983, but every second has something that i truly cherish, and the last song "Dropping Names" has one of my favourite guitar tones of the 80's.
I noticed how much you enjoyed the major part (ballad of big nothing mostly), which I find the most boring haha I don't know what it says most about me or you, but I guess me at the end
I haven't listened to Phoebe so I can't speak on her, but I've been listening to Elliott for years though I can't say I like all of his music. It's not that I think it's bad. It's moreso that it just doesn't click with me. Having said that, when it clicks for me, it *really* clicks. For me, "XO" is his best album. "Figure 8" comes next in terms of how many songs I like. And from there, I find myself liking just a few songs on each of his other albums. I feel like, outside of his amazing talent, a part of his appeal is sadly his struggles with life and his tragic end.
@@user69997that seems to be the case the majority of the time to people I introduce Elliott Smith to. They often find his singing unbearable, which hurts, but I get it. I find that showing them covers with what I suppose would be better singers tends to turn them around a bit, because the songwriting is strong
Now you gotta listen to his other 5 albums. RIP Elliott, greatest of all time. If I can make a request, listen to the album that came out after he died, From a basement on the hill.
he can’t keep getting away with this consistency
They can’t stop it
@@smags1082 he cant stop getting away with these
Not only are you consistent, but you are unable to miss with your reactions
this is one of those albums that you form memories with. it's my personal favorite album ever, glad you liked it.

The double tracked vocals and guitar on this album make it sound like the saddest hug you’ll ever get

You NEED to do “Blue Moon” its a double album that’s a bunch of unreleased or early versions of his music and it’s amazing!
My personal favorites is “Coast to Coast “ and “Waltz #2 (XO)”
“Coast to Coast” is definitely a cool vibe.
This man is allergic to L’s
Wish that I could listen to Say Yes for the first time again, and a whole album in general. Liked your reaction, keep it up.

The great musical genius and thinker of our time.

Please don't stop reacting to progressive rock or anything that is rock or metal, i just love your reactions, like , most youtubers i watch are forcing their reactions and your channel just hits different, thanks o/
is that a snare has to be the craziest thing anyone has ever said
The only thing more consistent than your uploads is the quality of albums you react to

I’m a firm believer that Drake bell was inspired by him. Down we fall by Drake bell has Elliott smith all over it
How do I request an album? Comments?
would love to see a reaction to Dijon -Absolutely
If you want to get someone into Elliott, Say Yes is probably the best tool. For me Angeles and Miss Misery are right behind.
19:59 - one of the great mysteries of the world is how anyone cannot like this song
The doors self titled is really good so is morrison hotel by them too
"damn bro are you good?"
lmao, if you know one thing about elliott smith's personal life its that he was most definitely not good
You should listen to Boxer from The National
HELLLL YYEEAAAAH!!!

Please listen to Mirage by Camel

Ocie Elliott please!!!! 😊
not drake bell 😭😭😭
"sugar me up" It's SHOOTING ME UP. It's about heroin like half of his songs. What idiot site said "sugar me up" jesus christ.
Don't they teach poetry in schools anymore? "Vague?". lol JFC.
Try some better editing you went thru each song pretty fair then you got to Angeles which is like 2 minutes and you skipped through the majority
it's prob not to get copyrighted lmao
Reviewing Elliott Smith without dissecting the lyrics. U need another hobby
My hot take is that I don't get Elliot Smith but love Phoebe Bridgers. Maybe it's because I heard her first? Idk. Great reaction as always my man!
I haven't listened to Phoebe so I can't speak on her, but I've been listening to Elliott for years though I can't say I like all of his music. It's not that I think it's bad. exact same here, i think to me its just his vocals that don't click with me. lyrically and sonically i like his work though
