    That line in Between The Bars "the potential you'll be but you'll never see" rings true for so many great artists and people, especially him

    I think figure 8 might be your favourite album based on your love for cupids trick and pictures of me. A lot of fans dont much care of it since it abandons the acoustic focus and basically becomes an indie rock album, but IMO it totally works. Its opening track just totally blew me away with its level of instrumentation since I was so used to self titled at that point.

    Between the bars' lyrics are very clever. You can either see them Elliott talking to his girlfriend with a manipulative behaviour. Or otherwise, as you said, it can be interpreted as alcohol talking to Elliott. It depicts so well the theme of control and manipulation

    Next album is even more of the Pictures of Me kind of production, one after that even more so, very elaborate. Excited for you to hear them for the first time!

    The most popular songs on this album (Between the Bars, Angeles and Say Yes) are the ones that were featured on the Good Will Hunting soundtrack, along with the non-album track Miss Misery which was nominated for best original song at the 1998 Oscars.

    Dude if you like Cupid’s Trick I think you’ll enjoy the direction he goes on the albums XO
    and the two following records. Elliott got some incredible recording opportunities with Dreamworks and the music we got continues to remain some of my favorite music Elliott or anyone else ever wrote. He elaborates on his musicianship in 3 very different directions which all have long lasting classic and deep cuts in the Elliott Smith Discog with Waltz #2 being his what I would call “perfect song”.
    XO gotta be your next reaction

    Elliott is my favorite ever, I have his albums tattooed and it's fun to watch you see his growth because you can audibly hear the production grow as his fame grows. His other albums showcase the growth in production as well😁

    One of my favorite albums. The songs for sure don't necessarily wow, but what I love is that they don't have to. They're just consistently well written and, at least for me, get better on every listen.

    Glad to see you're continuing listening to Smith! I loved your reaction to Cupid's Trick haha and Pictures of Me. It's fun to try to imagine I'm listening for the first time as well. I will say I found that this album really grew on me in a way most music does not with repeated listening until it eventually became one of my favorites. Choices like the late drums in 2:45 started to hit me a bit differently and harder for some reason whereas initially I had more of a wtf reaction.

    Great video man… I was waiting on this haha. This album is easily one of his best, and I feel it’s where he truly began kind of growing into himself and his sound a bit more. Coincidentally, this album was released on the same day of the month as Nick Drake’s album _Pink Moon_ (Both released February 25th), another album often mentioned when people are speaking of Elliott Smith. The albums are compared quite a bit, though they are quite different stylistically. _Pink Moon_ is probably the warmest sounding album I’ve ever heard, I haven’t heard anyone who has been able to replicate how smooth and warm his guitar playing is. Both artists were truly singularly gifted.
    I’ve mentioned it before if I’m not mistaken, but It’d be really cool to see a reaction to _Pink Moon_ if you ever get the chance. I feel like you’d really enjoy it.
    Also, really like the Daniel Johnston shirt : )

    Great video! Excellent review, I've watched all your other Elliott Smith videos and it's very rewarding seeing your reviews of a new Elliott Smith album and being able to compare it to previous albums and excellent analysis. In a lot of ways Elliot remains at his core the same artist but each album he branches out and plays with different techniques and sounds, he experiments and this album is probably his best, although not my personal favorite. He perfects his vocals and lyrics and sound on this album. My understanding is he plays all the instruments on his albums and as his albums progress he incorporates more instruments (lots of organ on figure 8, lots of distortion on From a Basement on the Hill)

    • @snowy6301
      @snowy6301  2 роки тому

    Re: Between the Bars - the title can suggest images of someone behind bars (in jail, after doing something they probably shouldn't have), while also suggesting how someone behaves while they're "between" different bars (bars where you would drink).

I agree with you a lot about Elliott not being mind blowing, up to this point, but after this he does not stay true to that. Big changes in his music come.
