I suspect Needle in the Hay has the most plays because it was featured very prominently and effectively on the Royal Tenenbaums soundtrack. It’s also a fantastic song.
a fun fact about "the white lady loves you more": elliott is the one playing the cello in that song. he didn't know how to play the cello at all, but he just up and learned it, and then played cello in that song
I just watched your Roman Candle reaction a few days ago, stoked you covered another Elliott Smith album! Needle in the hay is about trying to score heroin, it's his most popular because it was featured on the "Good Will Hunting" soundtrack. Christian Brothers is a brand of whiskey and alludes to having a bad relationship with drinking. It's personally my favorite from the album (as well as St. Ides Heaven, St. Ides is a malt 40oz btw). Cool story about alphabet town, when he lived in NYC he'd often walk home through the subways after the bars closed through "Alphabet Town" all the names of the streets were A-Z. White Lady is slang for cocaine, I always thought "keep your things in a place meant to hide" is like hide your things so they're not stolen and sold to buy coke/crack. Almost all of his songs have double meanings, the surface and then the darker meanings which usually revolves around traumatic events or drugs. Elliott stated his favorite parts of songs were the transitions and one thing I noticed about his songs is he transitions often and slightly differently each time and will deviate from standard chords quite a bit. Love the channel! You re-introduced me to Souvlaki as well, been 20 years since I listened to them, totally forgot they existed. It seems you enjoy experimental/noise albums, Elliott Smith's albums Figure 8 (Figure 8 is more Beatles-Esque) and From a Basement on the Hill play around a lot more with different sounds. From a basement he uses samples and straight up noise at some points, I'd recommend if you decide to do another Elliott Smith album From a Basement or Figure 8 would be the most different from the first 2 albums.
Oh wow that’s super interesting. Damn he really goes in depth. I always had a feeling his songs were a bit more dreadful than they appeared on a surface level. I’m really glad you are enjoying everything though! I really appreciate you watching :)
@@snowy6301 I've enjoyed your videos! In the aeroplane over the sea was great to watch your reaction too, brought me back to when I first heard the album and was just like what IS this perfection lol, that while album bursts with energy. I would definitely watch more Elliott Smith albums and have used your channel to find new music I'm not familiar with(never heard of deathconsciousness , been listening to it all week so thank you for that lol)
@@poptartmadison3216 Yeah that’s awesome! It’s a good feeling for sure. I also really love deathconsciousness I’m so glad it was recommended to me lol.
I was waiting for this, thank you : ) I have feeling you’ll enjoying his other albums even more as, in opinion, he only kept getting better. I mentioned it before, but definitely consider listening to Nick Drake’s album _Pink Moon_ . He’s probably the most original/unique sounding songwriter I’ve ever heard… The way he harmonizes his voice with his guitar is just beautiful.
I really think you should keep going chronologically with Elliott’s albums. His albums build on each other and it’s really interesting to listen to the progression of his music, especially for the first time.
I would recommend listening to the heatmiser version of christian brothers, it’s sooo much better it’s like the instrumental is on another level I love it
Hi I'm back again, Christian Brothers is a brand of alcohol. (liquor? I've never seen it in stores) Also White Lady is a name for cocaine which he did a lot of.
Loving these reactions! I’m in the process of listening thru Elliott’s discog too. Please react to Joanna Newsom- Ys, The Antlers- Hospice, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds- Let Love In/No More Shall We Part, or the Cure- Disintegration. Thanks again Snowy!
Cool video man! The way you approached it made it feel like I got to revisit the album with fresh eyes which is wonderful since I've been listening to it for half my life. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts and how open you seem to each song, particularly like that you're paying attention to the lyrics as I think that's one of Elliott's greatest gifts. Interesting how Single File stuck out to you-I think that's a relatively uncommon fave but I've always really liked it as well. I'll definitely watch your takes on the next albums in the discog if you do those- I have a lot of affection for these early albums but the later ones are stronger imo and I think you'll enjoy them.
Just found your channel, great videos👍 I’ve tried to recommend the album Women - Public Strain to people before, but probably because of it being less popular than most of the usual recommendation, people quickly forget about it. Turned out to be my fav album from the 2010’s. If you love Slint, black country, new road demos and whatever, you’ll love it. At the very least i would suggest listening to the song Eyesore off camera, you won’t regret it.
Interesting note : 99% sure that needle in the hay and Alphabet town were recorded in 94 during or a little after Roman candle sessions. Can’t remember where I heard it though.
@@snowy6301 oh yeah i use davinci resolve because it's free and not terrible but i'm not good at editing as well but i think it's pretty fun at most ive just done some basic cuts but i'm definitely still learning
You should check out lonesome crowded west by modest mouse. I dont know how you'll feel but I feel like that album, Either/or (Elliott's next record) and yankee hotel foxtrot are the most quintessential late 90s early 2000's records

couldnt think of a better song for that scene
Gotta hear the full band version of Christian brothers he did with heatmiser!! Truly epic

Alphabet town is an underrated gem

St. Ide’s Heaven is a top 5 Elliott Smith song for me, glad you enjoyed it so much 😊 can’t wait for more Elliott reactions
I LOVE St Ide's Heaven
Can't wait for you to discover the rest of his discography. He's the best imo.

Ahhh I enjoyed this so much! Always fun to see reactions of one's favorite musician.
Christian Brothers is a type of Cheap brandy. A brand.
Double entendre
you really can tell he was a big Beatles fan, that streight pop side in him and the catchy harmonies.
You're gonna love Fugure 8 lol
It's good but New Moon is way better.
@@vertyisprobablydead no it's not lol

Haha, check out the song 2:45 by elliott smith, it starts exactly the same way the scale you did at the begining.
Please do The Replacements - Let It Be it's an alternative rock/post punk album with coming of age theme
