- Guitar cover of "Lateralus" by TOOL with on-screen tabs - learned by ear.
Hope you enjoy the video! Please post your suggestions! :)
As you can probably tell, this song is quite the special one for me. It just HAD to be the first song to cover on the new guitar. I did something extra this time around, because I know people are picky with Lateralus. I added all the sources below which correspond to the mentioning in the tabs.

Alright you all, here we go! But first of all... isn't she a beauty? I know people are picky when it comes to songs like Lateralus, so I put my sources in the description. I reference them in the tab text like e.g. "[1] 0:50 (text that explains it)", so you can be the judge what's in the source video. Hope you all enjoy, spiral out! :)
What are your impressions so far compared to your old epiphone ?
Guitar sounds awesome. Kinda want to see if you can do Pneuma again with this guitar to see the difference in your new instrument
👍
@@baluchon2505 It definitely feels and sounds better in real life. But the tone I'm recording has only changed subtlely. It's much better intonated, though :)
@@MaxNiessl Nice, thank you for the feedback. I'm also playing on an Epiphone that my girl gave me in 2015. I've wanted a Gibson for a while, and I really like your new Gibson. Can't wait to see which TOOL song you'll do next.
I'm a simple man: I see lateralus, I press "like"
Gorgeous. The guitar is pretty cool too.
😘
You are alive 🤣
@@MatPL32 Only technically!
This one and schism have the most incorrect tabs on the internet.
You're a hero for us Max !!
I couldn't agree more! You're very welcome :)
Alejandro, I used to be one of those who critiqued incorrect tabs on the internet a few months ago because I wanted to play exactly like my favorite artist. Since watching another favorite Chanel of mine, Axe of Creation, I have changed my perspective. A tab that is different from the original does a couple of unique things.
1. It forces you to use your ears to fill in the gaps if you wish to do so and thereby improves your skill.
2. It allows you to add your own flavor. A small step in creativity without having the music theory knowledge to do a full composition on your own.
Don't forget about jambi lol
Really hoping Schism is next! ;)
@@undisputed1one seriously, every tab is the 3-2-0 pull off tech which is completely wrong lol
Me: "I know how to play Lateralus"
Max: *uploads Lateralus tutorial*
Me: "Clearly I do not know how to play Lateralus well enough"
That's me all over.
oh yea
She is a beauty, your tone is spot on in the cleans as in the distorted, and your performance is flawless. Such an inspiration.
Thank you, Ramón! 🤘🏼
6:48. I can hear this solo 3 bilions time per day and it will never get bored me.
As a bass player by hobby and major Tool fan, I naturally tune into what Justin is doing all the time. It is fascinating to hear the guitar part more isolated and hearing all the little things Adam Jones does. More importantly, your playing skill, tab transcription, and tone are all just incredible. Always a joy to see a new Max Niessi Tool upload.
Thanks, bud, really appreciate it 🤘
Can’t wait to see you crush this masterpiece of a song
Ladies and gentlemen, he's back!
The zoom was a nice touch at the trill section btw.
Thank you! :)
I can't express enough how grateful I am to all the work you do on this channel. You really are awesome. Thank you so much.
Thanks, bud! 🤘🏼
Holy smokes that was good. It just shows you what lateralus is one of Tool's greatest songs
Thanks! It really is 🤘
Absolutely perfect transcription. These videos are beyond well-made. You are gonna grow rapidly if you keep this kind of quality up. Please though, do some more Opeth stuff
Thank you! Means a lot. Will do more Opeth \m/
Massive tone as usual. Not a big fan of blue guitars, but this one looks great. Like you obtained it in 1950 and went back to 2021 or something.
Haha thanks, bud! Glad you dig it though :)
Dude, I even prefer listening to these than the original ones because your covers are sooo damn good
Thank you! 🤘
I whole heartedly agree only time I think I've ever heard it this accurately played was from the man himself in concert
Also you cover of COTE is fucking sick
Amazing stuff man, I can't wait to tackle this monster. Great idea putting the pedals on screen as well during the video to show when the effects stop/start. Thanks for your hard work on these!
Thank you! Have fun learning :)
7:25 god that part always just gives me chills
I was waiting your lateralus'version since ever.
Finally! My favourite TOOL track! Thank you, Max, this was huge, as always!!!!
That verse riff starting 7-5-3-0 on the first 4 times blew my mind. Guess everyone thinks it starts on the 2nd 4 repetitions because that's when the bass joins in and makes it more obvious. Thanks again for lending us your ear!
I've been playing it like that the whole time and then I saw tabs with something like 0-0-0-0--0-3-3-3-3 and was like "oh that's how it's being played". But that's not how it's being played, my intution didn't fool me :D
There is a video of Adam Jones playing that part
@@asmoncat5049 I know, I linked all my sources
@@MaxNiessl oh nice
@@asmoncat5049 You can see e.g. the first source with timestamp above the tab as "[1] 0:50 (text that explains it)". Hope that helps :)
On Thanksgiving when we engaged our tradition of declaring for what we were thankful, "Max Niessl" was the first thing that flew out of my mouth. You are THE MAN. Perhaps UNDERTOW next? That freaky part in 16th time before the track superbly gallops to a close gives me fits. I find your presentations to be the best way possible to learn to play a track. May the finest life can offer perpetually grace you.
Aww thank you very much! I've never learned Undertow, but I will definitely give it a go sometime 🤘
Man I absolutely love your Tool covers! Keep them coming until there’s nothing left!
Thanks, man! Will do :)
This is incredible. All the little sonic nuances absolutely nailed
Very clean and your tone is brilliant nice job man! can't Thank you enough for these sweet TABS
great cover. learned a couple things about the song i didn't know, thanks
Be happy to know that your videos help guys like me on the spectrum learn these songs on more then just guitar. Your tabs help my drumming and bass guitar
He is back! And the perfect song for a comeback!
I know right? Haha thanks :)
Currently playing along, thank you so much for the tabs! sounds great!
I can’t imagine all the time you put into doing this. It’s one thing to learn a song note for note but to then transcribe it as well for a yt channel. I’ve watched your other videos and you’re as accurate as it gets. Great work. Nice upgrade, surprised you didn’t opt for the AJ sig given your mastery of tool. Tone is killer.
Thank you so much! Glad you're enjoying this! I'm not that much of a fan of silverbursts, especially for the money. So I bought something different :)
Nailed it. I’m glad you lowered the volume of the studio track so we could actually hear YOU playing. I hate when people play the studio track as loud as them so it masks their mistakes and makes it sound like they play and sound just like the record
This day one year ago I was seeing Tool at Viejas Arena in San Diego, CA and since then I have discovered this channel, always wanting to hear this song, and now I finally have 😭 thank you Max
Awesome! Glad you like my content, bud!
Ah yes, perhaps my favorite Tool song, not just because it's good, but because of the message and how it impacted me when I was learning about the song for the first time.
Now, I can play this BUT, there ain't anything wrong with looking over the video and perhaps finding something I could be playing wrong.
Love this song!!! Glad to see you posting again like I said before. Much love to you and everyone here. You guys are amazing individuals!!! Spiral out, keep going!!! 😎🤘🏼
Thank you, Alex! Definitely, the best album of all time for me. What I would give to explore it all fresh and anew again. Spiral out! :)
Thank you so much for all of your content. It has been so much fun to play along with and learn from!
Absolutely incredible job, the best cover of this song I've seen. You totally nailed the tone and feel, gorgeous guitar by the way!
Thank you so much, Tristan! Glad you dig it! :)
thank you so much for sharing the used effects too!!!!!!
Nice guitar playing! You helped me learn Forty six & Two really easily
Looks and sounds great Max, happy to see a new LP in your hands and more TOOL content!
Thank you, bud! Glad you like it :)
This is insane. The sound, tabs and all the details in the video. Awesome work!
Thank you so much, Brandon! Glad you dig it :)
What a beautiful guitar, that color is amazing! Great tone and playing as always as well. Thank you for all the work you put into these covers! As a guitar player myself, it’s so much more enjoyable to practice/play along with a more interactive format such as this. You really go the extra mile when it comes to these videos! Thank you for doing what you do and keep on rocking! 🎸🎸🤟
That's so great to hear, Lane! Really glad that you're getting something out of my videos! :)
You the man Max. Excellent tone and playing as usual and thank you for doing this!
Thanks, man! Glad you dig it :)
The cover of this song was long overdue on your channel. Glad to have it on UA-cam. Amazing job!
Absolutely Amazing. Tnx a lot for all the issues inside. Great!
Amazing cover and wonderful guitar! My favourite colour!
max, well done, well played, well performed. i really love to see you doing this. cheers!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed, Serj!
One of the greatest covers ever for one of the greatest songs ever
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, now we know how to play it perfectly. Awesome work
Thank you! :)
Gorgeous les paul modern. Sounds as great as that graphite color looks!
That les Paul is just eye candy Max, it’s a real beauty. Gave me goosebumps!! Amazing cover.
Thank you, bud! 🤘
I’ve been waiting so long for this! Thank you so much! Excellent as always! 👍
Glad you like it, Katherynne! 🤘
Always impressed with how accurate your tabs are, nice job! 👍
Thank you! 🤘
Great job...picked me up an Adam Jones Signature Series Gibson that I can't wait to learn this on. Thanks for all you and Cameron Winters do and have done. Be lost with out yall.
Thank you so much for the work you put into the tabs and these videos. You are a legend!
Thank you, Justin! Glad to do so :)
2001 me is losing his shit realizing there is such a high quality cover of this in the world. Hats off to you, perfect playing for a perfect song
Most Excellent! Love that color!!
Well Done! nailed all the subtle parts perfectly!
So precise
So good sounding
So well played. As always.
Thank you!
Still great after so many years. Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome!
I love that you have the Fibonacci sequence tattooed on your arm aswell
I was waiting this, thanks
Again soooo good! Adam's subtleties can be difficult to capture but you've got it. And ya sweet axe.
that may be the single sexiest guitar distortion tone i have ever heard.
Thank you very much for doing this, keep going and regards from Mexico!!!
What a great guitar part, sounded excellent. You nailed it! Cheers!
Thanks man! :)
Best guitar cover I’ve seen from this song
meh
That's an absolutely gorgeous guitar, my favorite song too
Great work Max! Always glad to see a new cover from you, all the best💪🔥👍
Thank you as always, bud! Glad to see you here 🤘
@@MaxNiessl 🤝💪🔥🔥🔥
Max, you absolute legend.
That's pretty similar to how I play the song, but I kinda had to figure it out by myself too. Honestly it's so satisfying to see a correct tab for once. Lost count of how many tabs just straight-up butcher the main riff in ways that don't even make sense.
Plus, your guitar tone is immaculate. Great job man :)
Thank you very much, dude! 🤘
Love that tone
Absolutely awesome
awesome...been wanting to finish this one off .....
Welcome back! Another incredible cover, as always!
Thank you, Max! 🤘☺️
Man this dude is KILLIN it!!
Thank you for this! I’ve been trying to learn Jambi and The Grudge from your tabs, they are excellent. They have all the Adam Jones techniques and intricacies. Beautiful Gibson btw! 🌀 🤘🏼
That's awesome! Have fun learning from my videos! Thank you :)
i learned most of this song through other videos, im really happy you showed up with this and corrected some stuff i was playing wrong :p
Glad to help, bud!
I've been hoping for lateralus for ages. Thank you! Had to premiere the new Les Paul for it too!
Haha definitely, Lateralus is one of those tunes you have to save for something like this :D
Wow! Great playing dude, keep on it! Best tone i've ever heard.
Thank you, Hasan! 🤘
What a sound!!!! Listening to this on my speaker, sounds amazing!!! Gonna get a guitar this year for sure!!!
Awesome, thank you 🤘
Man that guitar sounds amazing
So happy to wake up to this cover, I've been waiting for it a long time. Congrats on the Gibson, you deserve it. Love you man
Thanks man, glad you dig it! :)
Love it, another song to learn from Tool, good job :P
Dope. Beautiful guitar.
Nice job, I play some parts a little different, like the end of second solo I bend the five versus 6th fret. Same effect. Sounds good. This is the song that made me learn some guitar. I remember first learning it completely. It gave me chills when I figured it out
Man, I discovered your channel today, and you already are my fav guitar player from youtube, a very skilled guy who deserves more views and recognition! Cheers from Brazil, keep up the good job
Thank you, Rodrigo! Glad you like my content 🤘
Nicely done Max...love that new axe as well. Always love getting to watch you play bro.
Thank you, brother! 🤘🔥
Epic as usual
Never gets old.
Finally a Lateralus tab I can get behind! Glad to see you back at it and the new guitar is brickhouse !
Thank you, Janis! 🤘
Sick Axe!! 🤘🏻 Great cover too, man, glad you’re back!
Thank you! Of course ;)
Dude you're a legend !
Oh boy have I been waiting for this one! You crushed it man so many little details that I was leaving out. thanks for your amazing work. Was just looking at your channel this morning wondering when you were going to drop a new video :P Love your guitar by the way!
Thank you, Jared! Glad you like it! Yep, it's been a while 😅
I could play these demos on a loop all day.
Epic as usual!! wicked new gat too! nice one!
Thanks, bud!
after seeing this I love and respect the song even more
damn the tone on the open chords kicks teeth out dude...great video as always!!
Thanks, bud!
Well, time to learn Lateralus.
Thanks for all your work brother you're truly an inspiration and I love learning these songs with your videos. Still chipping away at that rosetta stoned spider riff, just need to build that finger strength.
Thanks bud! Awesome 🤘
Beautifull guitar and great Cover as always. Easy to hit the Like button 🤘🏼
Thanks, Jacky!! :)
Phenomenal playing and tone. And what a gorgeous guitar. I own a Gibson LP modern myself, even tho mine is heavily customized, but what a great instrument.
brother I loved that guitar, as always bringing out the best in you, great job brother, let's go for more tool 💪🏻✌🏻🤘🏻
Thank you, bud!!
Killed it as usual!
Thanks!
Awesome as always🤘🤘
