- Guitar cover of "Vicarious" by TOOL with on-screen tabs - learned mainly by ear, some live performances and some other covers.
Hope you enjoy the video! Please post your suggestions! :)
This song is another one I've been playing for quite a long time. It's always funny going back and discovering stuff you've played wrong. Have fun! :)
- USEFUL INFORMATION -
Tuning: Drop D (D A D G B E)
Trent Kraemer told me about an isolated guitar track I didn't know about, so here are some corrections (that are also updated in the tab):
37 (1:42): The 7 bend is actually a 7h8 and reappears in the last chorus
96 (4:16): The 7 is actually a hammer-on from 5h7. From 104 (4:38): it's just a single note again
146 (6:27): Ends on an 17th extended power chord
161 (7:08): It actually ends with 0h3h5h0

Apt song for the situation
Definitely 😅
A trick : watch series on flixzone. I've been using them for watching loads of movies lately.
@Denver Ty Yup, have been watching on Flixzone} for since november myself :)
Ignore the two comments above. They're spam bots. I'd suggest reporting them.
so true
even now...
Your style of lessons/play through is my favorite method of learning songs. I hate learning chunks at a time. Much rather get a full play through in real time with the tabs and just pause when needed.
Thank you! I love to learn that way, too! I like lessons as well, but just on topics and ideas, not songs :)
you should try rocksmith 2014
Again just absolutely perfect, seems there’s nothing you can’t do
Thank you once again! :)
@@MaxNiessl to that I say....let's see a Buckethead cover....please???? I know u could pull it off, thatd blow some minds, are you even a fan? Of Buckethead? I just assumed for some, weird reason u would be
well he forgot to put some delay on that intro but you can't win em all 😂
"The Patient" next, pls.
That 3 to 8 stretch is killin me.
To me this is one of the greatest intro riff ever written ... love Adam effect and layers ...Adam has so much big riffs it’s countless
Its one of those riffs I've never been fully able to comprehend. I swear it feels like my brain short circuits when I attempt to make sense of the guitar riff specifically. I can almost play the entire song on bass, including the intro reasonably well, just not that break down yet, but on guitar I cant make sense of whats going on in that riff. I can't play it, not even close, i cant even make sense of it. Theres just so much going on and its subtle. Just totally unplayable for me on guitar. Its a little frustrating.
@@alexandermazilu7087 a very similar riff is at the end of Jacobs ladder by rush, I learned that one a while ago so this one was just developing the muscle memory
That song is one of the all-time greats in my opinion. Thanks for the tab. Vicarious is a challenge even after the Dream Theater stuff I've learned.
You're welcome! I updated the tab a bit due to some corrections :)

Third Eye next?
I’ve had troubles with learning this song for a long time but after I stumbled onto your video I finally managed to get it down, thanks for the videos man I plan on refining and learning so much tool with your excellent covers
Awesome to hear, Nicholas! 🤘
This has been my favourite song from the moment I heard it and it's simply one of the most fun songs to play in my opinion. Be it on the guitar, bass or drums. Can't wait to perform this live :D
Awesome! Would love to see Reflection by Tool! With disposition and triad if you’re feeling frisky!
When I'll do Reflection it will definitely be with Disposition and Triad ;)
Max Niessl I like “when” and not “if” 🤘
@@MaxNiessl Reflection is my favorite tool song! Hell yeah, do that holy trinity boy haha
@@videogames2629 Reflection is my favourite song. Period. I *have* to cover that one sometime :D
@@MaxNiessl that's great to hear, I look forward to those videos to again, see which parts I had right, and which were off, or just skipped over....
Watching this again. That 1:24 volume swell ❤️
I cannot believe Max managed to work out two guitar parts at 2:07, I'm actually amazed!
Gladly, the tracks are split into left and right, but it seems noone bothered to transcribe it correctly yet :D
Nailed it! Young man you're impressive!!! Keep 'em coming!!!
Best tool learning videos out there, period. Thank you for your work good sir.
This is the best of all the tutorials. Thanks man
Thanks for another one! These are great.
Thank you sooo much. Some parts I just didn't have the patience to figure out myself. Your dedication is greatly appreciated!
Probably my favorite tool song, great to see the tabs with the video!
Beautifully done! Bravo! Love your Tool covers!
Thanks, bud! \m/
Awesome! Always a treat to see you release a new Tool cover.
Thank you! Glad you dig it :)
I recently took on learning this one, using your tab on songsterr. I'm gonna probably need to watch this video, too, for reference. Hands down, the best Tool covers I've seen
The heaviest drop D riffs i've ever heard, especially in the chorus🔥
Max. you're an awesome player. I'm learning these songs through your method. Thx!!!!
I don't play guitar, but I'll be damned if you didn't go above-and-beyond with the production of this video. Exquisite work my friend.
We all feed on tragedy
Thank you for your dedication and effort to do this for us. I touched a guitar about 10 years after the last time and started practicing some tool songs. Looking through tabs an videos everything seemed a bit off. And then I found your channel, and all my problems were solved... You sir are a man of commitment and sheer fucking will. Again THANK YOU
No one can dislike, it's perfect.
Bro you're so on point with TOOL and Adam.
This is accurate af good job once more!
Perfect guitar cover to a fantastic song!
You are amazing, i love Tool 🤘🏻
Fantastic job my good sir!! 🤘🤘
Max, you always make it look so easy! Beautiful job!
Thank you as always, dude! :)
It's incredible, this cover is awesome dude, 🤘👍
Thank you so much! 🤘
Crazy. Again, Max. You are awesome. Thank you for these fucking insane playthroughs. This song is ridiculous.
As soon as the drums came in I was blown away by your tone, Damn! Great cover as always my man👌
Thank you! 🤘
Was waiting for this one, yay!
Simply fantastic! #1 source for accurate TOOL riffs!! Keep it up man 👍
Thank you! Will do 🤘
Max amazing as always !
Thanks 🤘
Wow! Love your videos! Great playing!!
Thank you!!
My mind is blown. Well done!
1:49 I knew Adam Jones did that Jambi technique in Vicarious, too! Nice job, as always. It's a surprisingly tricky song to play. The intro melody is sick when it comes around the second time with dual melodies. Might re-learn this soon thanks to you and your tabs!
Thanks, man! Yes, there is actually a lot going on. I realised today that I've played many bits wrong in the past :)
He does a multiple string pull off in vicarious like the intro, and other parts of jambi?
Or, pull through I should say...and at what point does he do it again?
I've watched the 1:47 mark multiple times...dont see any multiple string "pull thru" technique like he uses in jambi...
@@MaxNiessl is that true? Is there any of that multiple string "pull thru" technique in vicarious like in the intro and other parts of jambi? Cuz...I didnt see any....
Endlich! Definitiv einer meiner top 3 Tool songs! Geiles Cover :)
Merci dir! Spielst du eigentlich momentan noch? :)
Great cover man! Glad to see youre in shape and still making Tool covers, youre a big inspiration for me 👌🤝
Thanks, bro! I'll make them 'til I'm out of songs haha! Looking forward for covers or music by you, man :)
@@MaxNiessl Thats great to hear! 🔥Haha, Im on it! 🤝💪
Good job as always man!
Thank you!
Thanks buddy I’ve been having trouble learning this
Amazing, man. Thanks for doing this. Making my quarantined day just a slight bit better. That tone, jesus...you nailed it.
That was the plan! Glad I made your day a bit better :)
Damn, I had no idea how much I was.missing, thank you for making this.
Max, really nice playing! you’re a superhero when it comes to guitar tabs!
Thanks! Glad to be of help :)

Love love love love It. Great job. I didnt realize the mistake I did in the opening riff cuz I learned it by ear and was playing the bass part as well. I guess 2 in 1:). Love to hear more from you.
That's great, Matt! Thank you ☺️
Dude, absolutely great, well done my friend! 😉👍
Thank you, Paul! Always appreciating your comments \m/
Third week of trying to play along and I am getting very close. Thanks for this!

More badass by badasses played by a badass! You never fail to impress and such amazing tones and nice use of two angles!
Thank you, Brian! 🤘
@@MaxNiessl Is that the Fortin Nameless you use Max? I wish I had one of those, sound's immense!!
Hey dude, if you don't mind I'd appreciate it if you'd take a look at the video I made today... learnt some tool in reverse xD
More one time man, congrets for this. Thanks!
Thank you ☺️
This song is tied with The Pot for my favorite Tool songs. Great cover!
Thank you! 🤘
You have to be some kind of mad man to figure out what's happening at the 2:06 mark. Nice job as always.
That section was haunting me for years. I had a little epiphany yesterday, when I split the tracks left and right and realised that it's two tracks :D and thank you! :)
Nice job, keep it up!
Woah that’s beautiful
You're the person who got me into tool a couple years ago when I got my first guitar, keep up the great work my man and thank you for this amazing vid. Also, if possible, could you make a video for "the only thing they fear is you", or any other song from mick gordon and the doom franchise, tysm!
Thank you so much for this video I'll need it for my music test this song will help me a lot with the mistimes
Great job mate
You are an amazing guitar player man, I hope with enough practice I can someday be even close to this good. Great taste in music too, I'd love to see more Tool stuff from you. They're my favorite band and as its really helpful to see how a song is played to learn from and I very much appreciate your philosophy that knowledge should be free. Your tabs are fantastic and immensely helpful.
You can be just as good as this guy with practice
We are similar. I had a username that was JSCZ12 omg and i also like Asuka
This is my favourite Tool song! :) Subscribed for more Tool covers.
“I need to watch things die, from a distance” is a line that has stuck with me through the whole of covid season.
7:06 Gawd muthafuckin dayum
Bro! You are so amazing at capturing Adam’s technique and sound! I loveee watching you cover these songs. Idk if you’re as secretive as Adam, but it would be awesome if you would make a video giving us a tour of your whole set-up and show us how you achieve this tone😄anyways great cover and I hope to see more!
Thank you, Seth! Maybe sometime, but I don't have the equipment to record stuff like this right now. Definitely want to make some lessons on that kind of stuff in the future :)
Nice! Thank you, Max!
You're welcome 🤘
I can play this song now because of this video, thanks man!
That’s awesome!
The most difficult Tool song to play. Absolutely love it.
it is awesome, man
We'll bener the god Tool, thank you for your videos Max!!!

Man, thank you for this job!)))
You're welcome! :)
@@MaxNiessl every time)
Perfect as usual
Thank you once again, Archie! :)
making those 0 3 5 slurs look easy, nice one.
Dude, your channel is so underapreciated...
I honestly feel very appreciated on here, great community! But glad you're digging my content, Laurent! :)
@@MaxNiessl Thats great! I should have said that I personally think you deserve much more attention since you're so good and that the production of your vids are always in high quality. I did not mean to imply that your channel is not appreciated. Looking forward to watch more of your content!
Dude you rock thank you
If I had to pick a favorite Tool song this would be it. Thanks buddy
Thank you, Lino! I hit the motherload then, I guess :D
MADD skills! Tool is so flippin complicated and I love talented musicians who make me feel inadequate. Saw them live in Jersey and still amazed at the performance. Above anything I experienced as a soldier. Fellow friends...I love listening and learning. I’ve worked at Martin Guitar for 27 years. I know our models and every spice included, like hide glue. I do this for a living with compassion... like TOOL.
Metallica's music is way more complicated than Tool's.
Your covers are always great and accurate :D Please do a Pain of Salvation cover
Thank you! I'll give them a listen :)
I'm planning to make a cover for this song, I play guitar and I've programmed drums and bass and I wanted to include Maynard's vocals, but I lost because of these bpm changes, your tab is salvation for me. :)
Max! How are you? Thanks for continuing to post awesome content. Hope you’re staying safe during these uncertain times. Much 💕 from Wisconsin!
Hey! ☺️ I'm doing very well here! Quarantine is boring here in Germany, though. Hope you're doing good and are staying safe! Much love :)
Damn dude, you're a beast! Rock on
Thank you!
wowowowowowow
