  • 2007/2008/2009: Part 2. Still plenty of Spartan cab Geeps and SDs around. The gensets are new and have a few chronic problems. The cabooses are mostly used by yard jobs that have to shove back from a main line location.

    Brings back a lot of good memories. I was photographing all this area a lot back then. The Warm Springs, 201, 2141, etc. And trying to get my buddies Part Time and PAB working, as well as others. Those were the good old days in many ways.

      I think I know who PAB is; I have some clips of him (edited out) in the seat on the Warm Springs. His Dad, GPB, shot some excellent footage of the NWP on VHS back in the 80's. I subscribed and enjoyed your great NWP Videos. Thanks for the comment.

    I work at chevron research across from this. Wish it still was this busy.

      So you have a view across Canal St. It surely was busier back in the day; the roundhouse area was like a beehive. At least the terminal is still there; we weren't so sure it was going to survive a few years ago.

      Yes i can see it from the 6th floor easily. There were two Norfolk Southern Locomotives there today. Couldn't tell what models though.

    Sounds as though you were employed by ATSF back in the day. I was a switchman at Calwa yard from the late 70s to early 80s.

      Then you probably recognized the guy getting off the caboose in this video. I worked out of Richmond & Stockton '89 to '13.

      Union employees were bound by the prevailing UTU and BLE contracts that were in place at the time. Engineers' seniority transfer capability continued to be more restrictive than conductors/brakemen.

    At 0:46, I like that locomotive looks like a switcher. What kind is it ?

      It is a "genset". It has three Cummins 6-cylinder engines that start progressively as more power as needed.

    Nice to see a big wind and rain event in Northern California. Don't see it much anymore what with climate change and all.

      The roof mounted air conditioners in the Spartan-cabbed locomotives used to leak so bad during this kind of storm that I would have to spend an entire shift wearing a poncho. Thanks for the comment.

      We have 4 climates every year. Winter, spring, summer and fall - same thing every year. Never changes.
