Elsa, your crochet blanket for Kamp is GORGEOUS! As a fellow crochet crafter, don’t let the grandma stigma make you second guess such wonderful hard work! The patterns you pick for blankets are incredibly difficult and you do them so well ❤️

A few years back I was living in far reaches of the mountains of Northern California. I learned a great deal about a good many things from the local tribal people. One of them was their understanding of a major contributor of flavor in harvested meat. Basically, assuming no temp or storage issues, the meat changes flavor depending on the conditions of the kill. For instance, if a deer is hit by a car they would not typically harvest that meat for human consumption because the ph changes due to the high stress which reduces the lactic acid level needed to keep the meat tender and flavorful. Likewise, the cleaner the kill… the less alive time in which that stress effects the ph. But you already probably know all that. Grin.

Gaminess also largely comes from what the animal eats. Domesticated farm animals mostly eat corn and grains which makes the meat taste mild.

    • @nedanother9382
      @nedanother9382 2 роки тому +3

I also understand that an Off shot not killing immediately makes for some rough taste. If they run, your flavor goes with'em. make it a clean shot if your hunting.

    • @TheMoShow
      @TheMoShow 2 роки тому

I find it interesting that no one applies that same logic to the domesticated animals we consume (in regards to the high stress).

I always felt like venison tasted like liver.
    Bloody.
We let the deer carcass hang and followed all of the rules and talked to a processor who did hamburger and summer sausage for us, but we kept some big pieces to make jerky - we could never make enough of it no matter how many pounds we dried.
We used to give it as Christmas presents and our family loved getting the venison jerky. We were the only ones who always got our tags AND went out to hunt.
I'm not sure where you are in Colorado, but we would hunt in the Blanding, Utah area. Huge mule deer.
    Then one day IT happened:
We didn't have enough freezer space so we kept the bulk of the deer meat at my in-laws who lived about 5 miles away from us.
My mother-in-law didn't close the deep freeze all of the way. She wasn't sure how long it had been left opened but decided the meat was still frozen enough and just reclosed it. (I didn't find this out until later.)
I went over to pick up a weeks worth of meat and decided that venison burgundy was on the menu that night as something special.
After years of cooking venison and learning with onions, bacon, spices, etc... how to make it taste less gamey, thinly slicing a roast and making an amazing sauce is one way to make everyone love it. Even me.
I'm lucky my babies took a late nap and I got to cook relatively unmolested - which thankfully meant my 3 daughters didn't taste the food while I was making dinner or eat theirs early as they usually did.
By the time my husband got home from work, I had already been vomiting for quite some time.
I had also called my mil to come and help because my littles were VERY young and couldn't be left unattended.
I told them that it had to be food poisoning which was how we found out about the big freezer being left open.
I ended up in the hospital for several days but that wasn't the worse part.
We lost a huge part of the deer we literally were counting on to feed us for the next several months.
The only positive thing is that I probably had 10 lbs of jerky done and maybe 10 more pounds of ground meat in our freezer that wasn't from the group of meat that had tried to kill me.
Moral of the story: by the time it's getting warm there you may want to rig some type of alarm to tell you if your freezer ever gets above freezing.
It's been nearly 30 years and I still remember those several days and seriously wanting to die.
I certainly don't wish that on anyone else.
I loved your adventure and getting lots of Kamp time. You have a REAL ski/boarder area close by! I'm so glad! Will this mean no more pulling each other behind the Subaru to get some snow boarding in?
    Barron, your mustach was epic!
I hope you can find a better way to get your videos uploaded soon, but I could see with that breakfast neither of you were suffering too badly.
Thank you for sharing your lives with us.
Elsa, Kamp will have the nicest afghan of any dog! The colors are so beautiful and it's huge and will be even bigger once you get 6 more inches on it.
He's a very well loved fellow.

Making blankets and other crocheted/ knit crafts are so hard (the amount of energy and time, effort, ECT). I tried to make hats once with a friend and her grandma and I literally couldn't. Then there they are making blankets and socks and a whole star wars character set for presents for Christmas and birthdays. Honestly some of the best gifts I have ever gotten.

Great video. I like the close look into your day.
I can relate to how appreciative you are with your meat.
My husband hunts every season to fill our freezer full of vension and has for years. We raised our children on venison. The taste doesn't compare to commercial store meat.
One suggestion, tenderloin and back strap are the premium cuts, but on the tough cuts marinate the meat before cooking. I use fresh garlic, Japanese soy sauce, lite Kikkoman because I'm half Japanese and it's the best😄) and olive oil. Mix and the longer it sits the better. Use your cast iron, and baste with butter while cooking. Perfection!
Deer Jerky is delicious and easy to make too.
Really enjoy your sweet little family.

I had the same gas “pumping” issue. Check to make sure your fuel line isn’t collapsed. It would take me a very long time to fill and I could only fill a small amount at a time before it would click off. I finally asked my mechanic and it was a very simple fix!! I was so relived and it made pumping gas so much less stressful! Good luck.

🦌 I'm in Arkansas where near me is plentiful and one of the best ways I've found to cook deer meat is to get Zesty Italian dressing and let the deer meat marinate in it for like an hour in the fridge or snow whatever and then don't rinse it off dip it in flour salt and pepper and then fry it and it taste wonderful and it gets rid of the game taste especially if you slice it in thin slices

Skiing in powder I agree is definitely hard if you've never done it before. I moved to Montana August 2021 and my first time going here was on December 22, 2021 for this season - regular snow skiing, (I don't snowboard ) yet., I've snow skied 50 years of my life but never in powder. I've always skied on groomed hard packed snow. So I went up to my local ski resort Teton Pass, here in Montana and there was about four to five feet of powder. I had to give up after a couple hours. I kept falling. I kept thinking did I forget how to ski. It didn't realize to me till my drive home I'm like that was deep stuff. I then googled when I got home is there a different technique to ski in powder than regular groomed snow and for sure there's definitely a whole different way of skiing. Plus recommended wider skis and so on. I've gone two times since that day( actually yesterday )I went and it was amazing, never fell once ,went down the slopes and trails 20 to 30 times. I skied for about 5 hours. I love snow skiing. Next time I go there I am going to try to learn how to snowboard . Definitely just buy a magic carpet ride , the beginner slope to try and learn. I have always wanted to try snowboarding. It looks like so much fun. I'm so happy I moved and retired here so that I can go snow skiing as much as I want during the season. We have a window from December through April that we can ski here. I'm glad you guys are out enjoying a sport that you love. I can so relate. It's like no other. It's so fun. And I'm 62 years old. I plan on keep on skiing until I can't no more LOL. I enjoy and love watching your videos. Kamp is so darn cute ❤️

You may make your own fire starters. You need a sacrificial pot, one not used for anything else, a bag of cotton balls, a jar of Vaseline. Melt vaseline in pot, dip cotton balls in melted vaseline, dry on wax paper, start fire! TaDa!
Gaminess in venison is a product of what they eat. Super tasty if you hunt in the fall near farm land. Deer glean the fields at night.

When preparing our mule deer meat that is not those choice pieces you refer too, (back strap, etc), we find they get extra-melt-in-your-mouth tender by cooking them in the crock pot; usually make a thick stew. It will blow you away by how tender. (We first slightly brown the pieces, lightly coated in flour, in cast iron). Add the carrots, celery, onion & potatoes, along with browned meat and water, to crock pot or large pot you can slow cook in, and a cook until everything is so tender. You can add a packet of “stew” seasoning or season with your own concoction of seasonings. You guys will get the hang of venison cooking. Just keep trying! It’s all good!

Snowboarding looks SO FUN! Love watching you guys. Idea for podcast discussion: continuing filming and posting to UA-cam when you have kids? I have been a bit worried you guys won't post videos when you have kids because of privacy/judgment/all of the above... Care to share your thoughts in a podcast or future video?

You could add 1/4 arcs in the same pattern as the circle on the 4 sides to make the throw square and finish it with a few rows of your favorite rows from the circle. It would then be a medallion afghan.

      @@weavingrainbow9063 Elsa does as well.
She was one of the first people I ever heard mention it. I have it too, but had never heard of it before that.
Girl in the woods may have it too. It seems more common among women and women with neurodivergencies, as many of the best creators on UA-cam are.

What you could try, is thaw out your steaks then put them in A salt Brin for about 12 Hours in your camper. Then rinse those bad boys off and throw em in the skillet . They'll be a lot more tender this way. 🙂

To Baron’s question about the “gamey” reputation of venison, it is because some processors do not cut out the fat. Deer fat is nothing like beef fat and leaves almost a coating of wax on your teeth and tastes very gamey. If you process your own in the future, be sure to cut out the venison fat and add beef or pork fat into your ground meat if you want a higher fat content for burger meat.
