Dodgy galley cooking from Porto to Lisbon #22
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 гру 2024
- Cooking on a sailboat isn’t very different than cooking in a regular kitchen. I have a fridge, a stove, an oven and a sink. Of course, my “kitchen” (called a galley on a boat) is a little smaller than the kitchen I had in my Stockholm’s apartment.
I also use gas instead of my induction stove and electric oven, and use ustensiles that are stainless steel or that I am not afraid to break.
Cooking in my galley really doesn’t feel any different, apart from when we are underway, and all if a sudden, everything starts to move.
That’s the reason why I would typically have all our meals prepared before departure, which I never failed to have done, until we left Porto.
And just by naming “Porto”, you probably understand the reason why that time, we left without meals ready, and I found myself having to cook underway.
This week, I take you back to the days we met with our friends Andy and Mia in Porto, and had the greatest of times in the city, including: voting in the Swedish parliament election and taking the cable car in Porto as a way to correct a routing mistake.
We obviously couldn’t be in the city without a serious Port Wine tasting, which left me feel very tired on the next day, as we departed Porto to head towards Lisbon.
And I found myself having to cook, on a day the wind weren’t high enough for us to sail, and the seas rolly enough to make cooking challenging.

Hilariously, this is the episode that got me hooked on watching you guys! As strange as this sounds, when you (Sophie) were swiveling the stove back and forth (complaining about cooking while underway), you kind of got this serial killer look in your eye. This concerned me, so I had to watch to make sure you aren't a serial killer. Fortunately, after watching from episode 1 and working my way all the way up to this cooking episode, I have concluded that you and Ryan are not only harmless and incapable of being serial killers, but perhaps more importantly, I have learned SO MUCH from you guys that will help me when I finally have my boat renovated!!!
So far I realized maybe 4-5 different kind of sailing channels. You really fill a niche I haven’t seen so far: comedian! What a great idea!
Oooo, that is one of my favourite meals, Spanish baked eggs. The dancing pots were very entertaining. Having seen your experience now I will buy more rubber hot pads that I found at the food store. Something different to try, I use my Ryobi battery powered drill as a mixer and blender. Its small, easy to hold, spins fast enough to whip cream, didn’t cost much, drills holes ...even in cheese, and is cordless.
I enjoyed the "waltzing " kettle so much, thank you as always for sharing.
Thank YOU Ross, for the nice feedback :) /Sophie
Ryan & Sophie, is it me or do your video's just keep getting better and better. It was just fun to watch Sophie cat like reflexes in the galley. Great job as always and I always look forward to your episodes.
Thanks Stephen!!! You gotta practice those ninja skills living on a boat ;) /Sophie
Nice cooking on a boat is a sport not an art that was one of your best videos ever. Thanks for the giggles. Lol
Had to watch a second time.
Thanks Bill! Glad you enjoyed my “woopsy!” moment ;)
/Sophie
Sophie If cooking is a sport you win the gold medal. xx
Ryan and Sophie--Another great video!!! Yes the only seasick meds that I have heard of that do not add to the sea sick drowsy's is the patch but it has a whole bunch of other side effects. At least you where not Lucille ball in "The Long Long Trailer". The kettle almost had you but you held on between yawns and did a fine job. Always wonderful watching you too. see ya later s
This is sooo good !!! funny !!! well done and thank youso much :-)
Someone beat me; And to add a little so your advice messages are more evened out for you and followers--Again wonderful series... Put silicone place mats all over the place including under any pet bowls. Holds things from slipping around, kinda cut proof, heat resistant, soft rubbery and easy to clean. Put them everywhere. If yours is not a god send then you bought the wrong kind. Good apron is good safety equipment too from hot spills. You have a really nice galley by the way. Dennis from Minnesota just north of where your husband is from--"Dont-cha-know."
Loved your choice of music for the cooking scene!😂🤣😂
Just logged in to watch your weekly updates!
Really good video, always gives me a laugh. Just a suggestion for the sea sick green gills. My grand father struggled with motion sickness (got sick and anything he wasn't driving himself). No medication ever worked for him either. One day he heard about a story of taking elasto past (a cloth type medical plaster) and place a small piece (about the size of the tip of your finger) behinfyour ear loab. I was rather sceptical about this story but the bottom line was that my grandfather never got motion sickness with it in place. It was a plus for all of us as the sound he would make talking to a bucket would make me a little green. Give it a go, only negitive is we don't get to see the strange faces you pull when you feeling a bit green
Great fun. An Idea for a follow up next season might be to mount the galley camera on a gimble too so we really get to see whats going on with the cook.
Thanks for the art of cooking while trying to keep from falling a sleep and juggling the the food. Love your videos. Ryan will learn to listen to the boss. lol
Thanks Stephen!!! On board, ryan is the captain, but I’m the Supreme allied commander 😉
/Sophie
Love seeing the lady at the helm! You are gorgeous with your hair down!
I don't think there is anything more cruel than a Port Wine hangover. Well done, both of you. and X2 on the waltzing kettle comment!
Another great video from you guys. Port wine tasting in porto and next day hangover sounds like a great time 👍
Kettle sliding on the table, that was fun 😂
Amen Sista!!! It’s not an Art! It’s a Sport!!
A damp cloth is just fine for stopping things sliding. I would always choose to cook en route it’s something to do and I enjoy the challenge.
Love the kettle's dance!
As always, you guys rock :-). Awesome video, Thanks
Thanks Dennis!!! 🙏🏻😊 /Sophieb
Excellent video, the tea pot was a nice touch, lol. Sophia you did such a great job, how about a 7 course meal on next passage.
Why not?! That’d be a fun challenge :p /Sophie
I name the kettle mrs. Potts 🤣🤣
Hi sophie and ryan i've been watching ur vids lately and i am enjoying every bit of it. take care you guys 🥰 i hope some day i can also sail the oceans love from Philippines 🥰🥰
As usual great video. Live & learn. ;-) Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Bill, we’re loving every single step of the learning process ;) /Sophie
I love it! Nice choice of music as well. I find that if you have a microwave oven, then while you are in port, you can prepare complete meals and store them in microvavable/freezable containers. That way, when you are in rough seas, you can still eat like rock-stars with very minimal grunt, and very minimal dishes.
We typically try to cook everything in advance when we go on longer passages, but I got caught by Porto that time (oops! 😄) we couldn’t use the microwave when this video was made, as our inverter couldn’t take the load at that time. This year, we upgraded our batteries to lithium ones, added solar panels and upgraded the inverter. So yes, we should be able to use that microwave under way! :)
Excellent, laugh-out-loud video!
Thanks David! :)
A nice low temp slow cooker with a nice stew for passage food is a great way to do it. just need to secure the crockpot to the oven and let it rock...
Damp tea towel or what we used to use were those flat sponges that are about 8 inches square, Posh nowadays we have loads of that nonslip matting .
Sophie. You are a riot !! Love the vlog !! 😊👍👌👊⛵️⚓️✨🍷🍷🍷✨
Thanks Richard! So glad you liked it! /Sophie
Love the "kettle dance". So funny Sophie. What was the name of the ratatouille with egg dish?🌬⛵😎🌴
Love it, looking forward of your 2019 season.
We too! Boarding the plane back to Polar Seal as we speak (well... the first of 3 planes...) /Sophie
I enjoyed the sliding bowl. If you dampen a towel and place it on the counter, it will grip anything you place on top: no more sliding bowls.
Sophie - you have to shoot the sequence at 12 minutes again, this time with a stabilized camera so we can really get the full joy of seeing the boat heel :-) grab one of the mini-osmo's from DJI, they are brilliant for YT B-ROLL
Hi Sophie, I would have gone for the wine tasting over cooking also. You remind me of my French grandmother :-) Another great video :-)
Glad I’m not the only one who would have gone for it! Thanks for the nice comment Sheldon, much appreciated! /Sophie
This week's vlog featuring "The kettle" Love it x
That kettle actually has a name... it’s called “Margaret”. Don’t ask me why... our kettle just feels like a “Margaret” :p
/Sophie
I think dancing Margaret was putting on a show for you whilst you were cooking. Maybe some music next time? Excuse me for being silly. x
I cook under way all the time and yes it is a sport!! You really need to get yourself silicone mat! It doesn't just help with all the sliding but also makes clean up easier and faster.
I recently bought myself a plastic food chopper excited to try it out it was pretty inexpensive. It should help chop food prep time :) Also less likely to lose a finger. I had a close call my last sporting event, lucky no blood.
Nice video, happy travels
Oooh the food chopper sounds interesting, I’d love to hear your review of it!
We do have the silicon mat.... I guess my brain wasn’t functioning properly and I completely forgot to use it 🤭
/Sophie
Ryan & Sophie Sailing
I'll keep you posted ;)
awesome guys that made me hungry Sophie :-)
Here in the Colonies we have inexpensive antiskid cabinet shelf liner, sold in small rolls, many colors, perhaps 1/2 meter x 2 meter, a rubber mesh. Easily cut, moved, rinsed. A piece thrown on the counter will stop things sliding around. A single sheet of paper towel, moistened, will also work and work again for clean-up.
Now if you had tried the electric relief band, you would not have been sleepy! (G)
Hahaha! I’ll be honest, I was trying the Stugeron, not a big hit on this side ;)
I’ll have to find a way to get myself those electric bands!
/Sophie
Sturgeron came highly recommended, but did nothing for (or to) me also. Ginger capsules will help a little, NASA showed that it works by dilating the capillaries and increasing blood flow and oxygenation. It is also long established in Chinese herbal medicine for that. But if I need to read or work below in any sea state? Only Scop, or the electric bands, will keep me comfortable while everyone else learns what seasick feeks like.
Great video and nice editing
Vertical tasting of Port. Amazed you were vertical at all the next day. Tip, mix with bowl in the sink. Buy some of that net cloth stuff that is supposed to keep mats and carpets still. Keeps dishes still too. Had a good chuckle.
Oh, yeah, mixing in the sink would make sense!
I blame the rest on the Port wine we were served at Churchill’s ;)
(it wasn’t that much though, the Stugeron I took before the passage made me a lot worse)
/Sophie
I’m sure you’ve tried this but a towel or tea towel on the work surface stops most things sliding around. Learnt that going from the UK to Lanzarote for 12 days non stop. The sMe ad you, had to have hot food not sandwiches. Love the videos
Great vid!
Two words for your kitchen: Thermal cooker. And thanks for making me smile!
Moisted teatowel on the prepping counter under the bowl is an old sea trick! On large set tables a moisted table cloth! Sow they do on big boats wher meals is served on sitting table. BarbroSweden
Tack för tipset Barbro! :) sounds clever, I’ll remember that! /Sophie
Sophie, you are going to land a contract for some TV commercial sooner than you think if you continue like this!
Would love to say the same about Ryan but am not that sure ;-)
Thank you for voting!
(Ryan) thanks phillippe.. sophie deserves it... I don't want it ;)
Looks like you need a silicone mesh mat. Put that down on the counter and put things on it and they "shouldn't" move.
On recommande a 200%!
On a un énorme tablier en cuir pour l’eau chaude à bord. Super encombrant, mais ça fait bien le boulot :)
/Sophie
Loved this episode. Especially the comment at 7:53,made me Laugh. The sea sick pills obviously worked, the video in the galley made me sick just watching.
The pill made me so drowsy... but worked so well :) It got quite bouncy that night!
/Sophie
Have you explored a possibility of using anti-slip pads in the galley?
If you drink Port you should stay in Port. ,lesson learned, Merci 😉
So beware of sailboats leaving Porto as their watches are likely to be a bit hung over.
Are there magnetic bowls, maybe metal bowls and a magnetic layer in the counter or maybe just perforate the counter and have a vacuum suck everything to the counter. They have those silicone matts to prevent items from sliding back and forth on a car dash, maybe something like that. There's gotta to be a way to address the sliding bowls issue.
I hope that you have learned by now the damp rag spread out on the counter trick?
all that yawning started me off and i had just woken up :-) i suppose you could have put the kettle in the oven. but it was fun watching it skate around the counter :-) as mr.walker says, silicone mats(?)
The sink would have been a better place I think, but honestly, just a silicon liner would have done the deal. We have some, but I was so drowsy I did not think about doing it 😅
/Sophie
wet towel (even paper one) against moving objects.
I noticed sports grade reflexes there. What sports did u play?
Why does your boat have two helms? Redundancy? Or to check for a better view of the sails? Don't know to much about sailboats but learning. Thanks and safe travels!!!!!
Hi Derek! It’s nice to have for visibility, especially when you are sailing close-hauled and the boat heels. You get to see what’s happening under the headsail or on a specific side of the boat. It’s totally a matter of taste though :)
/Sophie
4:54 Ryan is a very lucky man, in Russia if you walk infront of your girlfriend.. she will go back or walk away and will be extremely mad, you must walk side by side or he must be behind his girl as protector 😁
But if Ryan wasn’t walking in front of me, who would I be filming?! ;)
I'm in the USA, where the woman goes first. I have a friend from Vietnam, where the woman follows. When walking together down the street and we get to a narrow point, we both stop and look at each other, waiting for the other to go first. ;-)
Under deck and the irritation of everyting flying around is the recipe for sea sickness. But great success if the sea sickness pills or aid is working. Greetings from Denmark :)
Oh Tino, the Stugeron worked great, but I was soooo sleepy that entire passage! Back to the Scopoderm. Until I find better :)
/Sophie
ok :) - here in Denmark we have someting called "Marzine" also a product against sea sickness.
Maybe find some bowls that have suction-cup bottoms?
Ryan, don't you know not to argue with a woman? She will always be right, eh Sophie!
Cawffee_ Tyme to quote Billy Joel, she’s never wrong, she just changes her mind 👍
Right?! ;) /Sophie
hehe catamaran for the win !
You need a strap that goes behind your back and hold you in front of the cooker.
A pressure cooker is great on a boat. Safe because the lid locks on and very economical on gas.
Silicone place mats would reduce the kettle dance although it was amusing, I assume deliberately. And don't forget you can put stuff in the sink to stop it rolling around.
Best thing I do is buy part baked bread. Some are very good particularly the French brands (of course). Stick it in the oven and everyone with be happy with fresh warm crusty bread.
Yeah we do the half baked bread now and then, it makes for awesome breakfasts underway 👌🏻
I actually have a pressure cooker back home that I considered taking, but it was just so big... might invest in a smaller one down the road.
We do have some of the anti-slip liner, I just... completely forgot to use it 😅
/Sophie
The idea of strapping one's self in front of a flaming device on which there are hot boiling liquid things all of which are being thrown around by the restless ocean, seems to me an idea that heads towards complete madness...
Try some rubber shelf liner material on the counters. :-)
wow!!! that cooking is not a JOKE!!! O_O
Right?!!!
Hi. What is the name of the last dish (type of ratatouille) you have made? Thx
Just wondering if you were to put the camera on a string while filming. So the camera swung with the motion of the boat
YES!!! I’ve been thinking about rigging that kind of system to capture the motion of the boat. The problem with the string is that the camera would end up spinning on itself (I’ve given the matter a ridiculous amount of thoughts 😅)
An idea would be to built a semi-circular rail that the camera could slide on as the boat rolls. That could work with the GoPro...
I’m putting this on the “winter projects list” :p
/Sophie
QUESTION: Sophie what is going on with the straps of your watch! How many did you use so far...?
Hahaha! Let me put that in the “do you really want to know that” category on our next Q&A :p
:) I am more curious now...!!!
Sophie, when does your cookbook come out? ;-)
Oh BayAreaBlues... I thought I might put together a few french recipes adapted for galley cooking this winter... so maybe sooner than later :)
/Sophie
Ryan & Sophie Sailing Sign me up for a copy!!
As I was trying to tell my lover that I was right...a wise man stepped in and asked..."Would you rather be loved, or right? Now I just let her think she was right and soak up her love. Now let's talk about that cooking miss Frenchy! I realize cooking and the word French go hand in hand and some of the best dishes come from that part of the world. But this is how I do it! My comments will probably only apply to 1% of 1% because of the way I eat. In fact, I watch 98 channels and can only think of one channel that eats somewhat similar to the way I eat. BTW...this is NOT TO JUDGE rather to just make a point. Go ahead and cook till your hearts content!!! First of all I'm a mono eater and when I do eat more than one thing, it's very much like the caveman diet. (think...hunter/gatherer) Fruits, veggies and protein. ARRRR...YUM YUM! Yes, I do cheat here and there and have even been known to eat a piece of flourless chocolate cake. YUMMY! So, this video doesn't apply to me because the only thing I would cook would be a burger or some Salmon (or other fish) Give me an avocado with some hot sauce dripped inside and I'm good to go. Or give me a salad with the fixens of a meal (Romaine, spinach, peas, celery, sunflower seeds, radish, avocado, shredder carrot, walnuts, raisins, cranberries, sprouted mung beans and so on) and that's a meal within itself. If you're wondering...NO...I don't eat bread, make sandwiches or cook many of the dishes you see sailors eating. I RARELY even go out to eat and if I do, it would be a grass fed burger wrapped in lettuce (no bun) with a few extras. If I decided to waste my precious time cooking (can you tell I detest cooking or preparing food...Ü) and make a pizza, it would be with a cauliflower crust with no tomato or tomato sauce. (Look up lectins) And I rarely watch any videos that has to do with cooking even if on a sailing channel. But you will always be the exception!!! I didn't read the comments yet but you may want to think about using some of that anti skid mat under certain dishes to keep them from scooting around. Great vid! PEACE OUT! Ü
Hey Sophie, why don't you wear Polar Seal's hat???? its too expensive??? 😁
She who controls the stomach controls the heart....
What's with that blue message across the whole screen @ 3:33 ?
It’s my editing software (Premiere) that didn’t render properly a clip. By the time I realized it, it was a little too late to re-export and re-upload 😢
What was that blue strip from 3:32 to 3:44?
*Mega facepalm* Premiere didn't render that one clip. That was my favorite clip of Porto *sob* /Soph
Thanks for the heads up, re-exporting and re-uploading right now. *more facepalm*
@@RyanSophieSailing no issue whatsoever, bloopers add homely feeling to videos. It's quite minor really.
Erf... now it’s to the point that it’s almost not worth it to re-upload.... oh well. There will be a small mistake in this one :/
Poor baby; what to do with the drunken sailor? the eternal mariner's question.
Foam on the bottom of the bowl would solve this sliding go away.
Sophie, you are a mess! (If you don"t have that expression in France, it's a Texas compliment) :-)
how being a mess can be a compliment ? :D
@@psychollek To be honest, I don't really know where the expression came from. I've been hearing it all my life (a long time). Here, at least, it is never used in the negative. Often used toward a precocious child.
He renounced USA citizenship? If you open a Bottle you have to drink it (All).
4:04 I swear Ryan is my white brother, i have to do DNA test, we have the same exact personality !! 😁😁😁 i can't pretend when im angry too, but i can suppress it alot.
my friends said im a very different person when im angry though... like, am i suppose to be laughing when im angry?? i avoid eye contacts and want to be alone 🙄
Hehehe... I wouldn’t want to share my life with someone who “pretends” ;) /Sophie
And when you are cooking the most delicious meal, the video ends??? are U kidding me??
Cooking and not being seasick success.
Right?!!! Thanks! :) /Sophie
Sophie: You need to purchase some non skid matting to make life easier on yourself? Barney
Hi Michael! I bought some, I use it, it changed my life :) /Sophie
it did make for a funny video although it was breaking my heart :) Barney
Aucun de vous ne semble être très heureux dans cet épisode. Peut-être que c'est trop de vin. Vous devriez garder des repas congelés comme la tourtiere ou la lasagne au cas où. Essayez d'avoir plus de plaisir et moins de travail. Bonne chance.
Thanks guys, but watching you sail from marina to marina is kind of getting a bit "old". Anchoring is not novel it is necessary. Bye
We do anchor quite a bit, believe it or not :) we actually anchored the whole time between La Coruña and Porto, as well as when we were in Lisbon. We quite enjoy being self-sufficient for as long as our boat allows it!
/Sophie
