I enjoy your videos very much. I think the most important issue you brought up is to know who is the designated captain. As a professional captain, my decisions have always been based on safety of crew first and safety of vessel second. All other criteria are considered after safety issues. I try to defer to the more conservative opinion , but the captain (the person with the most knowledge and experience) must have the Final say on all safety related issues. I also appreciate that Ryan asked Sophie if she was ready before departure: that includes psychologically, physically, and functionally ready. Don’t be concerned that you are not professionals, when it comes to the sea: experience is the best teacher. You obviously have much experience. I don’t want to discount books and knowledge, but there are things that can’t be predicted. The crew that deals with the unpredictable successfully, is the crew that arrives in port safely. So please continue with your excellent videos and sharing your valued experience. Thank you.
I have just recently found your channel Ryan and Sophie, and I must say you are quickly becoming my favorite of the "sailing" channels. You two have the perfect blend of entertainment and practical education. After two months of being cooped up at home sailing vicariously with you two is one of the few things that is soothing my cabin fever!
My day is ALWAYS better after watching one of your videos! You two have a great outlook on life, I love Sophie's expressions, Ryan's thoroughness in flight planning, er, sail planning. Thank you for sharing so much with little ol' me.
Great video, no succulent in frame at the start (opps) and also glad to see Ryan smiling at the end. Your humour and light touch are very enjoyable. If l ever need a pick-me-up, l rewatch your Kiel Week video. 😊
I'm about a year and a half behind on watching your videos, but I'm catching up fast. I few USMC attack jets for a career and then I trained pilots for a major US airline for 20 years. I love the thoroughness of your pre-sail preparation; especially your crew briefing. It parallels the thought processes of a good flight deck brief for an airline. Great job and a good example for people without an aviation background that you have.
As a retired US Naval Photographer and Sailor, My wife did tell me she was the Admiral and I the Captain. Ryan you made the right choice. believe in their skills of who knows best ????? Happy sailing.
Awesome video! I wish you both success with your adventures. I had a 10 year plan to do the same thing you both are doing, but after watching you guys I have move my schedule up. Happy sailing!
Im all here for my brother "Ryan the Introvert" !!! you will see me in all of your videos, Introverts don't take dumb risks, they take calculated risks.. they put so much hours into research, and they don't cry when things fail.. they are calm cus they know life throws lemons at people anyway .. Smile a lil bit often my bro! 😆🤘🏿
LOL... you guys kill me. You're endings always make me laugh and leave me wanting more.... I know that's you're evil plan. BTW. Nice bike shirt Ryan. Something tells me you can shred a few miles with the best.
Just rewatching this episode as we're going on our first longer passage in April. We have the same generation chart plotter that you used to have - only a C80. Have you found a way to import the routes from your laptop or iPad onto the plotter, or did you program them in twice (once on the iPad and once on the plotter)? BTW: Congrats on becoming a Raymarine Ambassador - I'm sure you'll enjoy the new electronics!
Nice one guys. You both seem very relaxed in this one. I like how methodical you are in your prep. Definitely better to be over prepared than under. Quick question: Is putting the bimini down just a preference when sailing, or do you have to put it down for some reason?
Ah, the clean engine bay in a young boat! You might also want to check the transmission fluid. It should not be able to leak out without some visible mess, but still, there is a dipstick to check. The cords always hanging on your stern rail are ? For what? Do you ever routinely check the seacocks?
Its good you use 2 plotters. Charts don't label everything exactly. Not preaching but I always gave a wide birth to anything. Looking at the Engine when running always a good idea! Leaks, belts etc. As with bilges! Alarms are not bullet proof. You two a smart be safe and have fun! You need Wine in your grab bag and your Life Raft when you repack it!
SAC, haven't heard that in a while. Three small things. That big clear pocket on the inside of the ditch bag often has an inventory list. Makes it just much harder to forget something. (Ryan must be ocd on check lists anyway, occupational hazard), don't forget to check the specific gravity of the coolant, as the raw water gets hotter the cooling capacity decreases and this becomes more important. Last, when you ran the powered winch my ears perked up, maybe it is due for relube?
Good list and, as usual, entertainingly explained. Do you do a rigging inspection? On the maintenance course I did recently we were advised to have the whole crew perform a rig inspection every day, so I'd say it's definitely something to do before making a passage.
Ryan ans Sophie --- I like that you both put in and both have jobs that are just as important to a smooth running boat. Ryan it was enjoyable to see your strategy and your sunny disposition. Sophie as always you make me giggle. I commend you both on safety first--aka the ditch bag. A boat carrying red paint crashed into a boat carrying blue paint and the crew were marooned. sincerely sue
Another winner, guys !!!!!! Love all that you have learned so far. Sophie. Question. What is the watch you have as I believe my bride would appreciate such a watch on board? Thank you.
Great video guys. 2things: your ditch bag seems too heavy for an emergency (I could be wrong though) and why remove the bimini. Nice to see Ryan getting involved 😏 keep it up captain 👨✈️ et merci oh great leader Sophie, personnellement je prendrais une (ou2) bouteille de vin dans le ditch bag and make it heavier 😂. Merci and best from heavily damaged HKG 🇭🇰
Have you thought about connecting your flat screen TV to your laptop with a HDMI cable. So you can view the Charts on a bigger screen. One of the safety issues with Navionic charts on digital devices is how far you have to zoom in to see hazards.
The comment about the plotter charts not being as detailed as the app based versions is because you would need to update the card in your plotter regularly to get the latest updates. Off the internet is more easily updated. Putting them up on a big screen is a great idea, and if you link the systems into your mobile devices, you have more flexibility. This should be pretty easy. As some others have said, why stow the bimini all the time, especially when the forecast is for lightish winds. In a previous vid, sophie was talking about sitting under the dodger when at sea. If you keep the bimini up and even put in in fills and sides, you can be almost indoors and with connected devices be really comfortable. These will also provide you with shelter/shade when you are in hotter climates
good vid :-) supreme commander vs admiral? i like supreme commander :-)) you definately upped the ante on that one :-) small suggestion :-( isn't it better to keep the skin on sweet potatoes and regular potatoes? isn't the skin where all the goodness is?
New title. Sophie obligé Ryan de s'asseoir en face de la caméra. You need to put a kitten or bunny on top of the camera buddy. It doesn't bite. I'm just playing. C'est une blague. Wow you really think about everything before setting sail. Great job on the episode. Merci et bon voyage.
This is sort of a weird question, but I've always wondered when watching your videos: when you take your small craft ashore and leave your boat out in the water, do you have to worry about someone coming aboard and taking stuff or even stealing the boat?
Yeah... its always in the back of your mind. I think the biggest risk is having the dinghy or the engine on the dinghy stolen, this has happened to a few people we know. Best thing is to always lock up when you leave and dont leave anything of value on the deck. But insurance is also a good thing. Ryan
Nice video. Just a comment, your ditch bag is way too heavy. In an event of having to jump into a liferaft you are likely to drop that bag in the water. You need something which is much lighter. when doing engine check watch for black debris in the bilge under the engine and that usually is a sign of your belt is getting worn out and need changing! Happy Sailing!
Hi guys. Do you guys have plans to get married? I lost you guys until this morning (10/4/2018). I’m glad you guys are doing well. When I lost your channel, Sophie was getting sea sick a lot. Have you gotten over that Sophie? God Bless you guys. Dave
Ok, Sooo I have to ask. Is that a caricature of the Mythological "penis Shark" on your shirt? Ha! I always look forward to your videos! Thanx for sharing.
Good video! I hope you get an AIS soon, soo we can follow you on marinetraffic.com. You are totally invisible there. Have a nice trip…….. By the way how is the seasickness?
In your video, you show scanning the route ahead with your on-line charts and/or chart plotter. I assume that you also zoom in much closer and look for the small islands. There have been several well known cases of highly skilled navigators running onto islands because they did not show up on the chart until zoomed in. Just found your site and binge watching. Stay safe. www.sailmagazine.com/gear/lessons-from-the-vestas-volvo-wreck www.newyorker.com/sports/sporting-scene/twenty-first-century-shipwreck
It’s because the activity number 7 is a secret one... 😏 Joke aside, I struggled finishing this video this week, and didn’t have time to do a double and triple check. Pretty sure that kind of mistake was going to happen (and that it’s not the only one)... oh well! 😌 /Sophie

Ryan you are one lucky SOB. Sophie...I love your passion and energy...and cooking. Keep it up guys! I’m living vicariously through you!

Hi guys! Hello from Russia! I really like your channel. We watch it with the whole family. We wish you good luck and will observe your journey.
Im just glad there is no talk about the poopdeck. Good video folks.
Hi both, your videos become better and better. You found a way to make boring stuff interesting.
Fair winds

Suggest adding "Check Fan Belts" to your check engine routine. Excellent presentation.
"Supreme Allied Commander." :) I'm going to use that.
Very nice episode. The end is hilarious! Look Ryan’s face,,,,
Awesome! Informative and entertaining.
Friking awesome!

beautiful commander :-) great video guys
Nice one guys. You both seem very relaxed in this one. I like how methodical you are in your prep. Definitely better to be over prepared than under.
Quick question: Is putting the bimini down just a preference when sailing, or do you have to put it down for some reason?
Brother you get the dry boat / needs more water in the bilge award :)
Ahoy, thanks for sharing.
Ah, the clean engine bay in a young boat! You might also want to check the transmission fluid. It should not be able to leak out without some visible mess, but still, there is a dipstick to check.
The cords always hanging on your stern rail are ? For what?

That looks yummy, I'm going to have to bake something later... :) Can you suggest any French recipes I can try?

I love Navionics. Easy to get into. Great charts. Tidal data. It isn't perfect but it it great value.

Great to follow your videos they are so informative and inspiring, how do you get the charts loaded on your laptop ?
Good one.
Love her Frenchie accent
Another winner, guys !!!!!! Love all that you have learned so far. Sophie. Question. What is the watch you have as I believe my bride would appreciate such a watch on board? Thank you.
It is the Garmin Fenix 5s Sapphire, with the suede bracelet. I absolutely love it! /Sophie
Thank you. :)
YAY the BILGE ! What about the bilge pump ? HA
Great video guys. 2things: your ditch bag seems too heavy for an emergency (I could be wrong though) and why remove the bimini. Do you bring paper charts - if so, how many? Suppose you have a major electrical failure, what is your backup? A handheld GPS would be useful too.
Just noted @6.03 you do have paper charts!
We do! :) /Sophie

Here in florida, the bimini never comes down.
good vid :-) supreme commander vs admiral? i like supreme commander :-)) you definately upped the ante on that one :-)
small suggestion :-( isn't it better to keep the skin on sweet potatoes and regular potatoes? isn't the skin where all the goodness is?
You pick the best music, are you able to share the artists?

Good Video. Yes that was the way we used to do it. Canned beans on passage on fun ;-( Beans would make my admiral un happy also.
phrpppppt! oops, sorry ;-)

Ditch Bag : very cool , Flashlight? you didn't mention it .
No CB radio? For mid-ocean, an SSB would work.

this videos favorite word from Sophie is Seacock, if Sophie were to say "put the seacock in the fridge" I might faint
Put the seacock in the basket.
next to the fwidge
Why take the Bimini down? We sail around the Med in gale force winds with ours up.
nice bicycle btw
Why do you store the bimini??
How much Diesel is in your tank maximum?
I hope you don't think that velcro strip is going to keep that bag closed in a catastrophe.
Nice video. Just a comment, your ditch bag is way too heavy. In an event of having to jump into a liferaft you are likely to drop that bag in the water. You need something which is much lighter.

Hi guys! Did you go to Lagos, Portugal. Or Lagos, Nigeria? Best wishes from Sweden
Portugal!
Nice info :-) flower onboard, is bad luck i think. Google it. I want u 2 safe.
Sounds to me like Sophie is the captain, I guess Ryan needs some title lol
I. Love you Sophie. Ryan is the captain. Who is the supreme allied commander?
Which Yanmar do you have?

Oh my. You do have a point! 😂
Oh no! You skipped the magical number 7 😱
It’s because the activity number 7 is a secret one... 😏

Haha "West coast of Europe"! I bet you didn't go near the West coast of Ireland! People are too afraid!
