Sailboat refit: installing a stainless steel arch for solar panels and dinghy davits #33

  • Special thanks to Anders, who made it possible for us to purchase this arch (and therefore make this video) by giving us his old radar. Without it, we would have had to replace our entire marine electronics setup and would not have had the budget for this refit!
Stuart’s contact details (Arcglow Inox Almerimar): www.arcglowinox...
In this episode, we install a stainless steal arch at the back of Polar Seal. We go through design alternatives, the construction process and finally the installation of the arch.
Our arch support 610 Watts of solar array, a bar for our antennas and davits for our dinghy.

Buy the way, 20-22 min is kinda the standard average of the sailing vlogging system of most successful vloggers on a weekly basis. Often the shorter ones, 8-10 min kinda leave one hanging or the detail zips by rather quickly and we all want to see our faves for a bit longer. 🙂🙂 ❤️⛵️

That is a professional job for a good price, well done Stuart. It's nice to see another Brit doing great work abroad. I make gantries for boats in Greece (normally when not locked down) and I am a professional Fabrication, Welding Technician. Your comment about "not asking" is absolutely true. Many boat owners get ripped off by hiked prices all over the world, so don't be afraid to ask around.

He is some skilled fabricator to make something so absolutely exactly what you want. I absolutely love it. He should start a business solely making solar arches that consumers can simply cut in the middle and fit to their boat's width - if that is possible.

The thing I love about arches, as Ryan's pull-up (?) demonstrated, is the added hand hold overhead. It may not be as important on a dual helm boat, but on a single helm having something firm to hold while stepping around the helm is priceless. What a great job!

GORGEOUS! The Arch, I mean. Sophie ALWAYS is. I LIKE how it turned out. You two are So GREAT together, you Compliment each other very well. Ryan's Level-headedmess keeps a lid on Sophie's bubbly exuberance, yet Sophie's personality keeps Ryan from sinking into the rut of simple practicality. This way the two don't get Carried Away and Shoot Off into Space, nor do you lapse into the doldrums of Same Old Same Old or SSDD. WONDERFUL! And the Seal looks Great, too, like she got a Big Spoiler on the back, to keep her Steady at 85 knots. WORTH EVERY DIME.

Ryan & Sophie it's obvious that Polar Seal is your boat. I've never seen a lady (Sophie) more in love with a boat in my life. Sophie you care about Ryan, that's obvious too. But the work and care that you both have put into her amazes me. Love your video's weather they are long or short there always informative and just plain old fun to watch. I wish you both fair winds and calm sea's on all of your journey's.

Looks great. Good tip: Watch the workers making your arch: Like antifouling paint - did they apply the expensive stuff you paid for? Or is it house paint tinted the same color? (Is that real anchor chain or that garbage that comes from that place in Florida?) With a stainless steel arch - you want to make sure you get the gauge of metal (wall thickness), and alloy number that's required - not something that looks great until you sail over the horizon and get some salt on it.
UA-camr Colin Furze does a lot with tubing. Scroll through the thumbnails of his (crazy) videos and select the images that have tubing in them. You'll see him laying it out, cutting the curved ends and welding. I know some of the techniques involved, but I still learned a lot from him. From his videos you can also see how to DIY a project like this, but also why its worth paying a professional. And after seeing one of Furze's videos you'll be able to immediately tell the shop you're thinking of hiring cuts the first complex angle (for your project or for someone else's). Do they know what they're doing or just winging it?
Also as a former carpenter, figure it out/fix-it, go to guy: If you don't know the task there's no way you can trick the worker into thinking you do. You can however, judge the level of confidence/insecurity of the worker - never work with flakes, liars, or people quick to anger. Good people can hem and haw a bit that's okay. And make sure you pay them what the job is worth. Estimating and doing the work are often two completely different skill sets. If a good person makes an honest mistake and has to buy more materials - be a good person and pay for most of that cost.

    • @RyanSophieSailing
      @RyanSophieSailing  2 роки тому

All good points. The person making our arch was a real pro and use to make a lot of movie sets and other things, so he is creative and good at his work. I believe he has made over 300 arches for boats so the guy understand needs and requirements.

Looks brilliant guys, that looks real good, that guy Stuart is sure good. Just think about one thing though, if you find yourself having to hide from a hurricane it is best to be able to take them solar panels off, of course you do not want them damaged or ripped off but the main thing is windage, the less windage the boat has the better off you are, I have been put over on my side and thats with everything off and stowed below, but because of less windage the boat could come up again and was not pinned down, just something to think about.

Wow! What a great addition to the boat. I can really appreciate the skill of a talented welder. When I was in airframe and power plant school my instructor told me he would give me a passing grade on the welding block on a promise I would never weld anything on or for an aircraft and that I would get a competent welder. Lol. He never said anything about boats tho lol.
I'm sure you'll see just how nice that extra shade is when in the south pacific. I learned how to sail in the China sea on a Catalina with a bimini the size of a large umbrella and mid day in the cockpit was brutal. It was always a fight to find shade and then keep it without someone else wanting to put you over for that small space. I didnt see any fishing rod holders tho. Ha ha, with Sof's luck fishing you it might be a loss to bother with them. Sorry Sofie 😉

That's an awesome idea! If I was you guys I would add solar panels to it as well more power is always better Haha! But then it would help with power for your slat to fresh water system and gives you more freedom inside of your cabin!

Avec un tel enthousiasme (force 10 ! ), on ne peut rien vous refuser. Stuart in Almerimar, ne pouvait que faire un beau portique. Belle réussite. Je m'abonne pour suivre vos aventures.
