- From 0 to cruising full-time: Back to where our sailing adventure started!
Three years ago, when Ryan and I had just met on Tinder and he came up with that crazy idea that we should quit our jobs and go sail the world, we had no idea what we were doing.
Our friends more or less laughed at us when we first told them about our plans, and our ambitions raised a few eyebrows.
But we had a plan, and that plan started by 1: learning how to sail.
When asking ourselves: “how to learn how to sail”, we thought: “take a sailing course is a good start!”. With that in mind, we contacted a bunch of sailing schools around Europe. Only one responded, and it sounded good enough that in January 2016, we flew to Gibraltar for a two weeks sailing course.
This week, we go back to where our sailing adventure started, to the very place where we learned how to sail: the Ocean Village marina in Gibraltar. This time, we sail our own boat!

👍Hello hello, recently found your channel. Love watching. Thanks for sharing your journey. Safe travels. 🤗💞🤗
Another awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
Ryan actually smiled and laughed!!!
Still binge-watching my way through season one and loving every second of it. Of all things, the one thing I find the most impressive is your editing skills and the choice of music, especially from someone who's primary job isn't related to video editing and that's from someone who works in VFX. Can't believe I have 2 more seasons ahead!
Well, you guys are very courageous to take on sailing the world so young, and obviously having the means to buy your boat. I started sailing dinghies up north where you don't sail in winter because lakes froze solid. After almost 10 year gap and no sailing, I bought my current boat, 33' sailboat and now after 5 years on my boat, I'm taking formal training, because I want to take the boat to the Caribbean, and cruise. So I'm doing a refit, preparing my boat and myself for self sufficient cruising. Thanks for the video, though a bit old, I'm still catching up. Follow your dreams. Fair winds.
Wonderful!
Sophie I love the look of complete accomplishment on your face.....Well done Both of you! love each other and love the adventure you both worked so hard for!
Thank you John! :) /Sophie
I just recently found your channel. So I am catching up. I love your videos. This one is wonderful.
I love watching you 2 because, 1. you show the good and the bad. 2. i watch and smile at the same time.....
Oh thank you so much Larry! 💛 /Sophie
Ryan, take it from a "grumpy old man". Sometimes, you just have to let Sophie fling some champagne all over the decks! Thank you both for living and sharing an adventure.
Hahaha! It rained the next day, so it was all fine. Besides, Polar Seal also needs her share of champagne right?! :) /Sophie
Congratulations on your first year. Really like your vlogs.
Jealousy is so pathetic. You guys are awesome and I really like your channel. Loved your reply to stupid comments at the end of the video. Well done.
Sophie, you are so refreshing to watch, always nice to see when you guys are less stressed and enjoying a smooth cruise.
Hahaha! It is true that these days, cruising has become a lot less stressful than it was when we were “transporting” the boat to Spain! Thank you Ken for the support :) /Sophie
99999999909
You guys rock, you bring such a refreshing angle to sailing blogs that it is a joy to watch.
Keep up the good work guys and know that you are inspirational to others out there with or indeed without boats.
Sophie - dream in progress. Visiting Amiens France from the USA. The people here have been absolutely adorable and very kind. We struck up a conversation at the bus stop yesterday morning that was just precious. My French is a complete wreck but everyone kindly waits for me to grind out my ancient vocabulary. Incroyable.
That's awesome! Unlike their reputation, most french people are super friendly and helpful :) Ryan was shocked to discover that the first time I took him to my hometown 😂/Sophie
I may not have allways srnn eye to eye with the French , butI must say you are beautifull you are extreamly lucky to have eachother on such a nice boat good luck, and fare sailing to you bothth
Well done!
God speed
With more adventures
WOW Sophie & Ryan great episode with super video, thanks again
Thank you Hans! :) /Sophie
Keep doing what you are both doing. We love it and it looks like you both do too! Sail on! And keep being happy! Thank you both for bringing us along. Us is my husband and I in Pearl River Louisiana. You both have taken us across the world!
Thank you Dee Dee! We're looking forward to the adventure in the Med! /Sophie
Sophie, l love watching your videos, feel inspired and motivated by your tag line, your personality is infectious. “That level of enthusiasm can’t be faked”, lol.
Thank you Peter! Means a lot :) /Sophie

Nice to see you so happy Sophie.
Fair winds
Tom
Thank you Tom! Achieving a long time goal is a pretty incredible feeling :)
Sophie, you are beautiful! Really like your videos. Keep Ryan!
Thank you for your videos, we really enjoy them. 😊😊
Thank you JP! /Sophie
Wow! How lovely to come full circle back to where you started :-)
Did you meet your teacher to show off Polar Seal?
Congratulations. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us.
Thanks for following it Todd! /Sophie
I have been watching 2 , 3 or 4 Ep every day so soon I will be caught up , but Ryan's face during the
celebration on the deck with you Sophie shooting the champagne " all over his deck " and all
the little tells like that makes me wonder. If all your audience is laughing along with you
why isn't Ryan.
I really do love your channel. You are quickly becoming one of my favorite channels....
Aw thanks Charles!!! That is a massive compliment!!! 💛💙 /Sophie
I really enjoy your candour, enjoy yourselves to the fullest.
Thank you for your great descriptive enjoyable video. Love your boat.

Thanks. Retiering nxt october and hopfully starting.

Another great video, Sofie - and Ryan. What a wonderful and obviously emotional return to Gibraltar with your own yacht. Your narrative of your recollections was very moving. I always look forward to your videos and your chalk-and-cheese relationship, and your superb sailing footage. Please keep on fulfilling your dreams and keep us involved xx
Thank you Edward! I am really looking forward to continue to adventure in the Med next year, it will be beautiful! /Sophie

Hey ignore the knockers 😆😆 and keep living the dream. You two have made the best choice, hope your channel grows it’s one of my favourites, 👍 did Ryan make you clean the deck. That was priceless. Btw we have an apartment in Mojacar not too far from your port I think. We are there this winter. Maybe we can message on FB to meet up if you are both still about in January. Regards Tony and Mandy x
Oh!!! Yes, it is quite close! We are in Almerimar for the winter, PM us on FB, would love to meet! /Sophie
Great video I only discovered you 2 today and in process of binge watching all your videos.I’m hooked thank you 😊
Thank you Mike! Fun to have you here! :)
Sophie, you exhibit so much enthusiasm! So happy that you’ve discovered sailing and that you share your positive energy with all of us!
Keep up the good work. I love your videos.
Thank you Fred! :) /Sophie
I always look forward to your videos. Definitely one my favorite sailing teams. I can’t imagine being that close to one another without a few disagreements. Thanks again for the honesty and beauty of your channel. ❤️🙏🍻
Thank you Dave!!! We really appreciate your feedback 💛💙 /Sophie
Hi guys!
Next week on Tuesday, we’ll be Live on UA-cam from our winter spot in Almerimar, from 7:30PM GMT+1 (Central European Time). We will share with you what we learned from our first year of cruising, our plans for the coming season(s) and of course answer your questions!
The season is off for us, and the videos won’t come on a weekly basis until we start sailing again in 2019. We still have some good ones in the making for the winter (one of them involves Ryan’s lithium batteries expertise…) so stay tune! :)
/Sophie
I'm excited to hear of your plans and what the future holds for both of you. You guys inspire me vicariously!
Ryan & Sophie Sailing your videos continue to uplift me - thanks xx I learned to sail by reading Swallows and Amazons, and by watching my Dad & his friend doing it all wrong on a hired windsurfer. Dad had no clue & his pal was a sailor, but wasn’t very agile. I waited until they’d both given up & I stepped on and sailed about a bit, came back & stepped off. They were proud/annoyed/jealous :). I rekindled my love for sailing, in 2005&6 by taking a 2-week RYA Competent Crew, then Day Skipper course, in Lanzarote & Fuertaventura. I met a rich lady & she invited me to crew for her family, on a cruising holiday, sailing a 56’ yacht from St. Martin, to Antigua & all the islands in between.
Would you guys ever sail to Canada?
Thank you for a wonderful series of videos. I have enjoyed them immensely. I look forward to seeing more in the future.
Thank you James! :) /Sophie
A year already of lots of laughter and big smiles... Bien vu Sophie et Ryan. You guys are awesome. Thanks and best from cooler HKG
Thank you Laurent! And thank you for being here every week, it has meant a lot to us :) We're looking forward to next season already! /Sophie
Nooooo! You are not suppose to stop sailing in winter, that's the best time to go to the Caribbean . Well maybe next year. Keep the videos going though. A lot of us are not familiar with Sweden and other European places from a personal perspective. Tu me manque dejas. Au revoir les amis.
Hahaha! I know, most people we know are crossing the Atlantic, while we are taking a break in the Med. We won't be away for too long though, there is only so much time I can stay away from the camera 😅 /Sophie
Yep, all this work to go cruising and you stop as soon as you get started.
Congratulations on your one year milestone. Bravo!
Has it really been a year that I have been watching you guys and your good times and your bad times. Be good and thank you for sharing your adventures. Peter
Well, 9 months to be exact :) but to me it feels like a very long time! /Sophie
Congrats to you both! Your story is that you took a small dream and made it a reality! Superb!!!!
Love the music at the beginning‼️ Buying a boat IS a solid plan. 😊✨⛵️⚓️✨
Good job guys
Great vlog and love the music.
Congratulations! You did it. Brilliant
Really enjoy watching you guys since you started. Look forward to each of your adventures and the spunky way you present your films. Keep it up Sophie, we ill be watching!
Thank you! I'll definitely continue making those films, there is only so long I can stay away from the camera 😅 /Sophie
Congratulations
You two are fantastic! Completely love your videos!
Thanks Jeff!
Your guys are awesome!
Thank you Mitch! :) /Sophie
Brilliant first season. thank you

Thank you Sophie & Ryan ! You're both crazy good people and AWESOME sailors :)
Thank you Joe! 💛/Sophie
Well done and congratulations on making it to the Med!
Thanks Bart! :)
Remember going out being afraid of the big ships? Now coming back you’re a pro,
Hahaha! Yes, they still scare me, but now I do have a lot more experience and control over the situation. Not to mention having an AIS transponder, that buys us some good peace of mind! /Sophie
Well congratulations on reaching the med. All the best
Thank you Allan! :) /Sophie
Thanks for the videos. Looking forward to more to come. Congrats for a job well done. Glad Ryan was able to survive. You guys are have accomplished what many dream of doing.
Thank you Stephen! Ryan's survival is one of the reasons I'm taking a small video break 😅😉 /Sophie
Looking forward tot the next seasons videos. Thanks for taking us all along.
Thank you Kevin! :) /Sophie
good job Sophie!!
Thank you! :)
Has a year gone by already, wow👍
You are on the right track making an awesome life story,a lot more interesting than mine, hahaha.

Thank you Mark 💛/Sophie
Many congratulations for returning on your sailboat to the place where it all began.
What good feeling should be
see you next week :))
It was an incredible feeling, definitely a moment we will remember for life :) /Sophie
Thanks for a great first season guys I've thoroughly enjoyed it, you guys balance each other out nicely. Hope to see some onshore adventures before season two begins and if not have a fun filled break and see you again for season two. Love from Australia. :)
Thank you Nev!!! There will definitely be a couple of onshore adventure coming out before 2019, there is only so much time I can stay away from the camera! I'm already looking forward to show you guys our winter spot :) /Sophie
Great ... look forward to your live stream.
Yipeee! :) We too! /Sophie
Wait... Polar Seal hats??? I must have one!!!
Great video! But sad we won't be seeing your adventures. From what I've seen every day is an adventure with you two! Be Safe!
Thanks Michael! We will continue doing videos of course! There is only so much time I can stay away from videoing... ut We're already looking forward to continuing the adventure in the Med! /Sophie
Always enjoy watching, hope to see more. You two are interesting to watch and give inspiration to other who have never sailed.
You show us that if you have the will, a way can be found. Thanks much.
Thank you James! That is absolutely true, when there is a will, there is a way! No one would have bet a dime on us three years ago, but when you truly want something, that doesn't matter at all. /Sophie
Goose bumps. What a great achievment, you really are accomplished. I hope you continue with your videos, you are both entertaining and delightful to watch.
Thanks Roy!!! That means a lot :) We will definitely continue, there is only so much time I can stay away from the camera 😅 /Sophie
Great episode, again. Looks like your fear of large ships is now overcome!
Yep, I feel a lot better around them! I will say, the AIS transponder has played a big part in this 😅 /Sophie
HI from Napa California, love your humor.
Thank you Stan!!! /Sophie
Have to agree love watching you guys because you show the good and the struggles that comes with this life style. Taking a break is a good thing. It gives you a chance to recharge your batteries and do any maintenance you did not have time to do (or repairs). Look forward to watching more videos as they become available. Thanks for sharing. 👍👍👍👍👍👍😍⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵
Thank you bill4nier! And thank you for all your nice comments throughout the season :) I look forward to a little break full of maintenance projects and writing (that's how I plan to use the time I typically used to edit) /Sophie
Get forward to live your dreams and let me stay beside you because it’s my dream as well
We will continue, both sailing and making videos, that's for sure!
Of course I loved this vlog‼️ Sad you are not going to continue sailing in the winter ..... plenty of warm places to continue 😊. Looking forward to what is next.
I know, we are also a bit sad that the season is coming to an end, but the winds of the Med in the Winter can be gruesome.we're already looking forward to next year though! :) /Sophie
@@RyanSophieSailing Thanks Sophis. I know it was you. 😊✨⛵️⚓️✨
Really enjoyed the videos will look forward to the next. Sad that it might be awhile. Your outgoing personality is infectious and Ryan is a lucky fella hang in there Ryan you two complement each other which makes these videos very enjoyable.
Thanks Billy! It won’t be long until we’re back, as I can’t stay away from filming for too long :) /Sophie
We like you two too, it's very rare to find such approachable people on UA-cam. I'll look forward to livestream and I don't mind fewer videos, two of you make each and every one of them enjoyable.
I hope you’ll be able to make it!!! It will be fun to “hang out” live :) /Sophie
Congrats! Think of how far you two have come in three short years. Think of the experience you have gained and personal obstacles you have overcome.
It is crazy when we think about it! Truly one of the best decisions we've made in our life... /Sophie
Sophie, you are my fovorite!! You are so beautiful, smart, funny. You create such enjoyable videos!! All the best for you guys in your journey. Xx
Happy Anniversary on your Return to Gibraltar. Hopefully the End of Sailing Season means the Beginning of Refit and Repair Season. I watch the Sailing Channels mostly for this, the Sailing is just the Cherry on Top. Well, also I do admire the QUALITY Ladies I'm seeing aboard these yachts. Not JUST Beautiful or pretty, a girl who lives Aboard has to Work, and Be Fairly Courageous, or the Sea will send her screaming in panic...I find this Refreshing, as I was never able to find such a one...
You kids are so blessed. God is truly found of the two of you. HE was keeping y'all safe when all you could see was fog God seen to it that all other vessels were know where near you... That's God answering our prayers to keep y'all safe out there on that liquid high way... It's good to know y'all are having fun in spite of the few ugly things that may come your way. So you kids keep having fun and I'm laying here waiting for your next video... Respectfully sending you hugs, love and prayers, be blessed BBE..
Thank you Bobby! 🙏/Sophie
1) Excellent video, especially with your safety gear! Sophia you are beautiful in your gear. Ryan you look good also.2) Great views of Gibraltar.
Thank you Wayne! :) /Sophie
You two are for sure living MY dream. I couldn´t generate enough courage to do what you did. I do have a boat license, too, but I´m only using it for two week trips or so on holiday on rented yachts, .... and then return to my working-mill. I envy you, I really do....
It is never too late Karsten, never too late! :) /Sophie
@@RyanSophieSailing Hi Sophie, due to some nasty health issues, unfortunately I can't risk to leave Europe by boat with weeks of time until returning to civilisation😶. But hey, I focus on the positives, as least I can afford to rent a yacht😁 and have some fun with it
Cool bananas.
Cool comment ;) Btw, the succulent has officially been named "Brian" after you. 🌱/Sophie
Hey Sophie, don’t worry about the naysayers, their not worth the effort. I think you’ve done a great job so far. Also I wanted to tell you of all the sail boats on UA-cam your boat has the coolest name.
Aw Craig, that is an awesome compliment!!! Thank you! :) /Sophie
It was great to see your affection for Gibraltar. My wife and I arrived there in 1991 on a trimaran (via Culatra!) with 3 very young kids, heading for Florida. But Gib kinda absorbed us and we stayed for 10 years before moving on to Sydney (by air!). I know how you felt when you tied up in Marina Bay ;-) Grinned through the whole video. Thanks! Now pondering an Oceanis 40 based in Gib....
Do it!!!! Gibraltar is a fascinating place... When we first arrived in January, we had not expectations whatsoever on the place, as we were just learning how to sail I . Coming back this year in the indian summer, I really loved the place... it isn't the last time we'll stop by Gibraltar! And YES, you should absolutely get an Oceanis 40 and dock it in Marina Bay :) /Sophie
Another great vid. Hope to see "something" from you guys so I know your alive. LOL Have fun, be safe and KEEP ON, SAILIN ON. cheers
Hahaha! Yes, a few “off season” videos will happen, and in the meantime, I’ll also update the blog! (Www.ryanandsophie.com) cheers from Spain! /Sophie
@@RyanSophieSailing thanks Sophie. Enjoy!
Hi Sophie, I do believe you are getting more comfortable around big shipe. On my first trip it took me about one year to slow down and enjoy the places I visited more. Buying a boat and sailing the world sounds like a good plan to me:-) Stay worm and do boat projects over the winter. Boat projects make great videos just saying.
Hehehe! Message received Sheldon! Ryan is very excited about his lithium battery project, and surprisingly, he is equally excited about making a video about it! /Sophie
@@RyanSophieSailing (-; It is not easy training a man we are inherently stubborn creatures ;-) Any planes for big opening lids for under the settees? embcustom@aol.com
A landing plane. Try anchoring in a quiet bay next to a seaplane fairway and waking up to a 6am takeoff over your boat!
Hahaha! Can only imagine :) /Sophie
Nice video as always and yes go for your dreams :) - Maybe I'm the only one which notice but you have som dirt on your zoom camera in the upper left corner, if you can't see it on the lens the dirt is on the cameras censor inside the camera. If it is a DSLR camera check the manual for censor cleaning or maybe get a professional to clean it. Love your videos. Tino.
Oh Tino, I know!!! I spend 20 to 25 hours each week, watching, selecting and editing hours of footage, and this spot drives me bananas... That's another reason why my camera and I need a video break: it needs a bit of maintenance! /Sophie
Don't buy an Rv, sailboat suits u guys. U are a great team. Sail on!
Hello Guys!
Welcome to the Mediterranean Sea :) I want to thank you for your beautiful videos... I love the sea and your nice videos invite me to sail again.
If you come to Italy, there is a bottle of Rosé champagne waiting for you ... I would be very pleased to meet you ...Ciao! Emanuele
Thank you Emanuele! We will definitely come to Italy... the whole country has been on my bucket list for a while, and I’m so looking forward to discover it! Let’s keep in touch as we approach next year :) /Sophie
Hello Ryan & Sophie...
I have seen your video which tells about octopus fishing in Portugal. I've heard that the demand for octopuses in Portugal is high if you don't mind helping me to connect with a company that works for the octopus business there? I really hope could cooperating with you. Have you heard about Simeuleu island? You should visit Simeuleu Island in Aceh one day...thank you
Notre prochaine saison sera encore mieux, on a hâte!
/Sophie
Just a little interesting point - I noticed that when you raised the Gibraltar courtesy flag, you didn't have a Q flag going up with it. The reason I find that interesting is that Gibraltar is part of the UK, which is not part of the Schengen area - so, shouldn't you need a Q flag to enter?
That’s a good question! We’ve seen no other boats enter Gibraltar with a Q-flag, so we didn’t really think about it 🤔
Hi Sophie, I recently discovered your channel and really enjoy your videos, always inspiring! I live in Paris, but happen to be in Algeciras at the in-laws right now, as I watch you sailing along Tarifa and through the bay of Algeciras. Funny coincidence ! Also, out of curiosity regarding your process of selection for a sailing school: have you considered Les Glénans at all ? As a Bretonne, i'm sure it crossed your mind :) Can't wait to watch the 2019 season of your adventure! Fair winds! Rémi
How fun! I spent a lot of time at Les Glenans as a kid, but since Ryan doesn’t speak a word of French, we were limited in our choice by English speaking schools only. Hence Gibraltar :)
Thanks for the nice feedback! We’re excited for 2019 too! /Sophie
Nice vid. WHERE is you winter destination???
We are docked in Almerimar, Spain, where we are taking a break before continuing the journey in the Med :) /Sophie
Hi guys great video. What is the name of the sailing school/club you used to get the experience before you went on your adventure
It was the “Hercules sailing school”. They have now moved to Lanzarote and are called “Sea Master training center”! /Sophie
awesome video guys, Sophie did you make Ryan clean the champagne? :-)
I'm the Supreme Allied Commander onboard, Alsino, he wouldn't dare ;) /Sophie
