Hi guys! We should have been clearer and given better info (pardon the amateurish character of this giveaway, we’ve never done that before). You are super welcome to send your participation to ryanandsophieonaboat@gmail.com until Monday the 15th of October, at which point we will put all the names in a hat a draw one. The AIS we give away is a Raymarine AIS250 receiver only, and we’ll send the AIS250 box, compatible with NMEA1083 (so no cables). Let us know in your e-mail if that works for you!
Hey Sophie, your enthusiasm for that "local elctrician" (LOL), was absolutely wonderful & infectious! What an outfit they are - truly fabulous attention to their customers' needs. I love your videos xx
Thanks for the always informative and humorous video (just catching up on them now). And what a wonderful person to have gifted you the AIS transponder. When there is so much negativity around us, this goes a long way to restoring one’s faith in humanity.
Very cool that you figured it out and that the finals in your VHF radio didn't mind the serious mismatch of that TV antenna. And my oh my what a boat yard with amazing accommodations! And to the viewer that gifted you with the new AIS...kudos and good karma to you!!! PEACE OUT!.
Noooooooooooo!!!! I was so confused what your comment was about, it took me three clicks on the 1:03 to understand.... 😭😭😭 I gave this comment both a heart and a thumb up. Glad you are here to keep this channel straight :p /Sophie
I love that music (with out the crazy lyrics), it is really a cruiser's tune. And the tracking down the problem that no one would expect. Well done to both of you.
Thanks for this tech update, l’ll be fitting out a boat with electronics in 12 months so looking to learn as much as l can. Also love that you allow your personalities to shine in the videos.
Wow!! I have to respond to your beautiful episodes. Very proff. the - best I have seen on youtube! So you are in LAGOS ! - my favorite Algarve town. We plan to buy a vacation home there - and have a Oceanis 37 in the harbour- when retiring ( in a couple of years ;) ) We normally sail two weeks in Croatia each summer - and this video suddenly brought me back to the " summer "Medd, - we miss it. I´m a Dane living in Göteborg, and I have been following your journey for some time and enjoyed it immensly!! Okay enough for now - enjoy your journey!! "Fly safe"
I like your style, Sophie is a hoot and Ryan's the reserved smartypants. Great to see you grow you sea legs and enjoy your adventures. God Bless, and safe voyage.
We're in Annapolis, Maryland right now, arguably the sailing epicenter of the US, and there are chandleries and boat services everywhere. Nothing like that. Hey - we are now 7 weeks into living and traveling on the boat. The learning curve is sharper than I had anticipated, but of course the old saying goes "you don't know what you don't know."
Totally relate to the shapER curve. As you’ve witnessed, we’ve been there! Be sure that we are with you in thoughts, and that it will get better :) 4 months after departure, I really feel at home with cruising!
I am not complaining! I am having a great time. It's just that there are so many things I had not considered, small things mostly. One larger thing I had not given enough consideration is anchoring technique. For us, anchoring had mostly been throwing down the hook off the local beach for an afternoon of sun and frolic. That and a handful of overnighters in perfect conditions. Now things are real. We dragged really badly on our first real test - a 30-40kt blow off Sandy Hook, New Jersey. It was then that we learned to set the anchor REALLY HARD. Amazingly, our giant Rocna held us in those difficult conditions for another full day once set properly. It is supposed to be similar here tonight: 30-40kts as Hurrican Michael brushes past us. I know we can hold in good bottom like Sandy Hook turns out to have been, but now we're anchored in this black goo mud stuff in Annapolis, I am not sure how confident I feel. Do I bail out and spend a fortune on a marina?
I will admit Wayne, on our way down from Faro to Gibraltar, we ended up in the fog again, and having the AIS transponder (as well as the fog horn) felt really good!!! And in the straight of Gibraltar, a well functioning AIS makes life a lot less stressful... :) /Sophie
That was an awesome video! Great job Ryan! Sopromar is really is one nice place! To the person who bought the AIS; that was very generous and thoughtful! Very happy for you guys and the adventure you are leading. Thanks for sharing. Here's an idea: in this video, you started with a drone shot (of Lagos I presume), I thought it was a really neat way to start a video. Then I thought wouldn't it be neat if you started each video with a drone shot of the area you're in? I know it wouldn't always be possible, but I think it would really neat. It's just a thought.
Thanks Bill! Love the idea!!! You're right, as much as I enjoy flying the drone and editing those nice shots, it's not always possible to fly it. For example, right now, we are docked in Gibraltar right by the airport's runway, and the BA flight is about to take off (for the anecdote ;)) I'll remember the idea though! /Sophie
Great video. Had a very very similar experience with my own AIS - having just returned to UK after 5 seasons in the Med I can also say that Sopromar is as good as it gets. Helped a lot by the fact that the ARC Portugal and ARC Europe rally finish there. Ricardo was also my service manager when we passed through on the way down so fun to watch and love the humour. Geoff Rogers
For the most sailors Lagos and Gibraltar are the last viseted Spots on the European Mainland befor starting bluewatercruising over the atlantic, so its a good place for a marina store. The very last stopps than are Madeira and the Canary islands, there is the very last chance to get things fixed
Ryan I know what you mean about being a leftie the wor is not made with left handers in mind I must say that I am no longer a lefty due to a massive stroke Im now a rightyI am hoping some time soon to have a boat of my own I will keep an eye out for polar seal on my planned travels around the med
@@charonstyxferryman I got it from them, thanks anyway for your explanation. You can buy a VHF with built in AIS transceiver for around £300 which is a pretty good deal.
How is the ABC islands right now??? I am buying a beneteau 361 in st Thomas in a week. Maybe I’ll see you out on the water? P.S. which way are you headed?
Ryan is actually a teacher! He also used to flight-instruct :) I wasn't here when he recorded the video, but when I started to edit, I was like "eh.... this is interesting!" :p /Sophie
Ryan & Sophie Sailing It would have to be a different frequency . Otherwise we pilots would have some major clutter when we flew over navigable waters.
Great episode - glad you sorted the VHF ariels Ryan - something so easily mixed up! The yard in Lagos looked fantastic, does it have a website ? See that you are in Gibraltar just now - great that AIS and Marine traffic!
Sure, you fixed the wires to the TV, but I bet you still get the same old crap on it! ;-) Another great episode. I hope we get to see more of Lagos soon. I'm heading to Spain and Portugal next year, and Lagos looks pretty cool.
Hahaha! If you knew... ;) we watch zero TV! You should definitely stop by Lagos, it is beautiful. Watch for the "velcro effect" though. We'd been warned about it, and ended up staying almost 3 weeks :p The people are lovely, the marina is great, the food is incredible and the wine.... so insanely affordable and good. Don't hesitate to PM us for tips when you start getting close! /Sophie
Maybe it is Patrick Laine there has bought you a AIS transponder... regarding the antenna you can get a much better signal with a slightly thicker cable and another antenna, I know the standard mounted VHF antenna on a e.g. Bavaria is weak. Love your videos. Tino :)
Hi Tino! It was not Patrick Laine, although we're always glad to see him pop by this channel now and then :) We'll be looking at all our cables when we replace the radar this winter! /Sophie
Ok, yes I also watch Patrick's videos, he has a lot of good information about many things. Looking forward to your next video and is also excited to hear more about the cable/radar project in the future :)
Sopromar is indeed a palace. I am afraid to ask but is it as expensive to buy items as it looks? I also have to say Ryan you look much better without a baseball cap. Too much hair for that look. Also you actually smiled a few times. Wow! Sophie the look on your face when the boat was a complete mess was priceless. Une autre episode bien construit. Merci et Happy trails.
Merci friarfox! Since we pay everything in Swedish Crown and the rate isn’t the best these days, it gets a little expensive for us. But I’d say the prices were reasonable, especially considered the level of service you get there. /Sophie
Ohhh Noooo! Just hand them your Bank account if you haul out here! Its super but not on your budget lol! Run!!!!! You can always ship to your next Port of call if you ship to the Harbor Master! Check first! We sure have some nice people on this planet! What a gift!
1. Sure.. minus the red hair 😂 2. Really?! 3.YES. You can’t believe the amount of people that stop Ryan in the street to ask him if he’s a famous extreme sports person. 4. Alex Honnold with hair.
I can see you on Marine Traffic, sat next to Gibraltar airport. It says Status: drinking cocktails. Did Ryan hook that new transponder into your drinks cabinet?
Our AIS is so accurate ;) Fortunately, the bar is located on the opposite side of the boat. Although these days, after a successful trip to Portugal, each and every storage space in the boat is a drink cabinet 😁/Sophie
A vhf cable is typically 50 ohm, but a tv cable 75 ohm. Swapping the connections, but leaving the wrong type of cable in the run, will degrade performance. You really want the vhf connected only to vhf cable, premium cable if you can.
[Ryan] HI Lyfan, I can confirm the cables are the correct type. The wires just got crossed due to some poor thinking with work done prior to us buying the boat.

Your AIS is like our ADS-B, it sounds like. Big difference is that ours is mandated for next year.
Correct raymond, though on a different frequency. Ryan

...Ryan... use the marinetraffic site...to check, if you are using the right antenna... there is a App (marinetraffic) for cellphones as well!

Not only did they give you the gift they gave you the opportunity to fix your VHF ;-)
