Charles Dowding always recommends multi-sowing beets, radishes, herbs, peas, onions, and all sorts. As he says, "it's like they want to be with their friends". And in my own experience now, just about every brassica will benefit from multi-sowing! It's like a gardening cheat code XD

Great episode Luke! Multi-sown beets are the best! If you twist the larger beets out gently when you harvest them you won’t disturb the smaller beets as much and then the smaller ones can grow on 😀
This is how I grow my beats and I am thoroughly satisfied with results every single harvest. It made my heart so happy to see how happy you were pulling your beets just like I was a few minutes ago😁😁
Beets and radishes grow fabulously like this. I appreciate that you mentioned that you didn’t make this way of planting up on your own-that it’s been done for years. I agree that people criticize the method till they see the results themselves. Nice harvest!
I just saw a blog post of Charles on multi sow. The leeks look really nice because they grow up out of the dirt. So you don’t have that much sand in them to contend with. Also I see that you direct sow yours. What I think I’m going to do is use the soil blocker. I’m going to start my seeds in them. Then transplant the block directly.
Cherna Gast Yes, this is where I learned thus technique as well. I don’t know why Luke didn’t mention him in this video. I’m pretty sure he also learned this from Mr. Dowding, and should have at least given him a shout out, instead of going on and on about people who thought he was crazy for trying this technique, and how it’s “new” information. Certainly new for many gardeners, but not a newly discovered approach to gardening. I love learning new things from more experienced gardeners and I watch tons of gardening videos on UA-cam. If I ever decided to do gardening videos myself, I’d like to think that I would give credit where credit is due, for great tips I learn along the journey that is becoming a great gardener. I know I’m forgetful though, so if I couldn’t remember where I heard/learned it from, I’d at least give a disclaimer that I saw it on a UA-cam video, or learned it from someone else, instead of presenting the topic like I had pioneered the technique myself......
I saw the video on trio seeding. I tried it. I am also very impressed. I planted again, between the rows. They are about 2" high. Now, when I harvest this coming weekend, I will have a new set of beets ready to take off. At this rate, I may be able to get three large harvests of beets out of that same narrow space.

not new to gardening by any means, but I've not grown beets before, I always assumed the body of the beet had to be in soil but apparently not. Very cool, I'll need to try this. And one of the best parts of the beet are its greens ;)
I found this out by accident. I was growing some microgreens indoors and I accidently dropped some turnip seeds in a different tray. Omg! I never thought of that. Great idea! I have some potted fruit trees. If I did that do u think theyd grow well mid july in kansas? Its pretty hot but they would be shaded. Hmm... I feel an experiment coming on...
@@amandaadams4103 Oh indeed! It was easier than I thought. I was experimenting too. I planted one fava in each plant. Cut it when it got about 5". Added leaves to pot. I have one pot for growing more fava seeds. I have a garlic and onion in other trees. They get too dry. Won't do it again. Happy Gardening Sis💚🌱
I never thought of doing that! And its not too crowded?
My tendersweets turned out amazing! Shorter with more girth. My first success with carrots! Crazy that i havent had much luck with Scarlet nantes, even with raised beds on top of clay. You just never know. Gotta say, you are a gardener after my own heart...high i tensity gardening.😀 I always get flack from people about this. Happy harvesting!
"this is what dreams are made of." ✨💖✨
The littles are great pickled. Every part of beets are delicious, love the greens.
I really appreciate not just the wonderful classes, but how every episode is family friendly. No profanity. No using the Lords name in vain. Just good clean fun in the dirt!
Agreed 👍🏾
agree.. hes a respectful young man
Why would there be profanity in a beet growing video??
I don't know what gardening videos you've been watching.
Yeah vegetables hate foul language.
Biggest beet I have seen. So satisfying to watch you harvest them.
Amazing harvest! I think you could have left the smaller beets there to grow and catch to the big ones for a second harvest.
I am so excited to try this with my sugar beets this year! I've been wondering how to get enough by spacing them, and this is perfect!
Nothing beets this method... you had me convinced in a heartbeet.
Stop harvesting pun weeds:p
@@constancemiller3753 I would tell a couple more but that would be beeting a dead horse at this point...
Your harvest is FANTASTIC! May ask how do you preserve your beets? Canning, dehydrating? And what do you do with the greens, use them for compose or eat them? If your canning them, have you, or will you, do a video on your canning process?
Try to dehydrated them then put them in the blender. Put some in a shaker and Add them To the foods soups salads smoothies
Or just water. Also do the same with the root and use it in the same way. The green beet powder is excellent for your liver.
Awesome! When did you plant the seeds, and when were they transplanted.
I think those veggies really like being planted up close to their little friends! Seems like a little piece of heaven.
The smaller beets are my favourite, there sweeter and not as earthy.
I agree. Although I'm sure it depends on the varieties. My father always taught me to pick them smaller for flavor.
It’s rather ironic, but I always avoided the larger beets at the market for the same reason....until I was forced to buy them because that’s all I could get....and to my complete shock found them to be sweeter, tastier, and more tender! Now I go for the big ‘uns!!
@@dianeharrell817 Can I ask what variety they were? I've found smaller was better with the Detroit variety but there's so many variables in gardening.
I also enjoy smaller beets.
@@normal_norm2627 I grow bolthardy all year round and I love them. I pick them when there about golf ball size. I pickle them and roast some of them. I like the leaves with a salad too.
Beets are so delicious and your enthusiasm while picking your beets was adorable! ❤️
I like the little ones best for pickling whole! Will try this next year!
Oh, make no mistake...you’re crazy but in the best way ever!♥️👍🤓
Debra Bjornsen what’s your pickling method?
Ger Riding I use the recipe variation for sweet pickled beets in the ball canning book. Instead of regular pickling spices you use cloves and cinnamon sticks infused in the brine.
I love the flavor of cloves so this is a winner!🤓
Yep, I just plant all of my seeds right into the soil. I do not go all nuts into spacing. My beets are just sprinkled down the row and they are tiny seeds, so they grow close together in a good 30 foot row because I LOVE pickled beets.
It ain't Shrute beets, but nothing can beat a Shrute beet bravo.
Funny
Love it Lol.....just watched an ep of Dwight and his beets last night LOL
That's a money beet right there!
You have been rewarded since a season or so ago someone scooped them unannounced! Great looking beats!!! Glad you got such a great harvest!
When do you start planting your second round of beets?
I know I love beets!!
I love beets!!! I've never grown any yet but it's my favorite vegetable!!!!
I need someone to love me the way this man loves his beets 😂
Best comment!!😂
I am so happy to see your beets blossom, great blessing indeed.
How far apart did you sow the multisown modules? Beets are one of my favorite things to grow in the garden, but I struggle with them!
Just what I was planning to ask!
Hi Luke,
A nice crop of beetroot.
Charles Dowding also does multi sow for quite a few crops, including beets, radishes, leeks, parsnips, turnips and some others.
A good way to increase production.
