Games Workshop's Forgotten Horror Classic | The Fury of Dracula

- Опубліковано 12 жов 2023
- The only Games Workshop vampire that counts - Dracula - made his GW board game debut in 1987 thanks to designer Stephen Hand’s The Fury of Dracula. Set 8 years after Bram Stoker’s classic novel the game sees the legendary vampire return to haunt Europe. Three players act as the hunters who dispatched him last time, working together to end his reign of darkness once and for all.
Meanwhile the Dracula player gets to travel Europe on a secret minimap, lay traps and ambushes for his pursuers, and make an army of new vampires to do some bidding. This was from an era when Games Workshop still produced a wide range of games: Warhammer, 40K, Chainsaw Warrior, Dark Future, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, and many more besides. And yet The Fury of Dracula has remained one of the most highly regarded, atmospheric, and downright dastardly games in the GW back catalogue.

Corrections:
There were in fact a number of rules tweaks in the 4th edition that affected some cards and abilities.

"There is only one Vampire that truly counts" and he lives on Sesame Street...
Ah-ah-ah-aaaaah!
"... only one vampire that truly _counts_ " 😄 I see what you did there!
If you throw a bunch of rice in front of them they all do, they can't help themselves
First edition FURY OF DRACULA is one of my all-time favourite games, and one of the few that has survived every household cull over the years. It's sitting on a shelf to my left right now.
It's a shame Hand doesn't want to talk about his time at GW. I hope he understands the impact he had on the scene, and how much of an influence his work had on people like me who would go on to work in games. There are mechanics of his, in CW and FoD particularly, that I still admire and draw on for inspiration.
This is one of those games that I remember looking at in the model shop once in a while, didn’t realise how many editions there been. Excellent video as always Jordan.
Thanks Stu!
Never knew this even existed. I wish they would get back to making more games like this. I guess the tiny plastic space toys make to much money haha.
You mentioned Future Topic Ideas.
Have you thought about the Ork Project?
The Ork answer to Realm of Chaos.
Waaargh the Orks, Ere We Go & Freebooterz.
(Thanks for the mention the other week by the way! My first You Tube shout out.)
I’d love to spend some time on the Ork books at some point, though the Realm of Chaos will likely call me first!
Excellent as always. Really appreciate your thoughtful and intelligent approach to the hobby. Keep them coming!
As always, excellent research and great presentation - thank you, Jordan. I've been eyeing up Fury of Dracula as an addition to my higher-player-count boardgames for a while, but had no idea it was anything to do with GW!
I remember watching the remake on Geek and Sundry many years back.
Frankenstein clearly evolved into Oi! Dat's My Leg!
I'm moving my copy next to my copies of The Fury of Dracula and Curse of the Mummy's Tomb. The trilogy is complete! 🙂
Love this game, still play it regularly with the wife and inlaws.
Awesome video, Jordan. This one was a missed opportunity for me, I saw Fury of Dracula advertised in Dragon and similar, but just never bought a copy. That's the magic of your videos though, you manage to make me wistful over games I've no experience with!
And while I doubt this is legal, I'd pay actual money to see your reskin of this game as Fury of Drachenfels.
Some of these old school games really are like time machines, get them out on the table and you’re instantly transported back to another era!
I’ve got to say, although I’ve got a lot of stuff planned for the foreseeable, a Fury of Drachenfels feels like a VERY fun project!
19:35 4th edition did change some rules. It made Misdirect no longer playable on sea locations (honestly a pretty significant change.) as well as tweaking the wording on cards to be more clear.
Ah, I missed that! I’ll add a correction to the description to make it clear that there were some 4th edition tweaks
Excellent video. That sounds like a pretty well designed game.
Awesome vid. I knew nothing about this game before this video.
I think that there are very few people who even know that this game existed...
But i think that only one could research and make an entire historical video about it ❤❤❤❤.
And that's why we love your channel Jordan!!! 😊😊😊😊.
Thank you very much!!!!!
My pleasure, glad you liked it!
@@jordansorcery Of course i do my friend! Both me and my husband love your videos. We usually see them more than once.
Really interesting, your work of research is always complete and you provide lot of information, and you are never boring, you really know how to interest people, great speech and acting in front of camera.
And by the way, i think that you are a handsome man, and this is not a bad thing too in my opinion 😊.
Such a shame we never got that GW Frankenstein game. Fortunatly the "Abomination: the heir of Frankenstein" game exists. While not silly it has all the good bits like getting parts from several locations, including murder and boddy parts rotting before you can use them;
A game I wanted since reading a review of it in late eighties but didn't actually get till 2016 and was not disappointed, brilliant game that totally captures the essence of the book
Great vid! I would love to see a similar one on Chaos in the Old World, which is probably my favourite game ever.
I love Chaos in the Old World (very eager to get it back to the table again) so definitely plan to talk about it more deeply at some point!
@jordansorcery that would be amazing! As well as being a great game to play, I think the game has had an uderatted impact on the wider board gaming community. As it was the precursor to Eric Lang's massively popular trilogy of Blood Rage, Rising Sun, and Ankh.
Our group hated this game so much we re named it ‘The Futility of Dracula’. We still laugh about a game that went on for about 4 hours and we weren’t any closer to finishing. Is Dracula at sea? No. Is he in France? No? ….
it still baffles me how such a good game is out of print. I still didn´t find any game that can replace fury of dracula
I have never played this, but thank you for the history video - now I must!
Happy to help (if I have indeed helped!)
Still got the original game with metal minitures, had the second version with the plastic figures but now regret selling that one.
The fury of Meanvlad Von Manbatcula
I still have the original edition with the metal figures somewhere - loved it.
Great video, no idea the Mr Hand was behind all these games, I still have my Chaos Marauders, Curse of the Mummys tomb and Chainsaw Warrior. They had great re-playability
This sounds right up my alley! I used to have a TSR-published Dracula micro game with a folding board and cardboard counters (best part was the Erol Otus art).
Fury of Dracula though, reminds me a lot in description of a shareware DOS game I recall playing a lot as a kid, Dracula in London. The main difference being it follows the events of the novel (though randomized) and you can play all six hunters from the book. Spoilers, it would be rather hard to play Quincey in 1898... anyway, not saying the two are at all related, just that the DOS game filled many an afternoon when I was younger.
Such a nice game. last time we played Dracula went on a holliday in Spain for soem reason before at the end getting totally destroyed by Mina.
I have very nice memories of this game... looking forward for the history of Chaos Marauders now!
Oh, it's... a game.
I never had a chance to play this but excellent history lesson as always. Cheers!
idk if it was just a design philosophy that was in fashion at the time but the "Both players choose an attacking move secretly then reveal" was of course in Dungeonquest, also by GW around this time. The art style and slightly wonky print alignment is definitely a bit familiar. Great video as always!
It’s a good system
It was a common rule in many boardgames at the time. Dungeonquest was a translation of a swedish game called "Drakborgen" (dragon keep) so the two games were made by entirely different creators.
Love this game so much. Thanks for a history lesson!
God this is such an incredible game. Such memories of hours spent playing.
I'd guess this is probably the game from Games Workshop I've played the most. Need to grab a copy - which of the editions was the best do we think?
I prefer the 3rd edition, but its really all a mater of taste if you ask me.
I'd perfer one without player elimination as it can be a bit of a long game.
Digital edition. Wildly popular. Tournament going on today
Your mention of West End Games' _Paranoia_ got me thinking about thinking about the _Ghostbusters RPG_ they made. Ever play either?
I’ve played a little Paranoia, but never the Ghostbusters RPG. Though I’d happily play either in the future!
@@jordansorcery Ah, nice. I know more about GB, but they're very similar games re: systems. I enjoy how simple it is as an RPG, but there's some flaws in the weird hybrid HP/MP/XP system. I've actually thought of tweaking it to adapt it to other settings.
Been meaning to get this game. Just wasn’t sure what edition would be best to get.
Off topic, did they ever do a new edition of Chainsaw Warrior?
Recently saw Last Voyage Of The Demeter. Solidly done & made the most of it’s budget. Well worth a viewing for Dracula fans.
I have the limited edition with the minis! Must paint them up (possibly repaint them thinking about it!)
Great video. Will you do one for Curse of the mummy's tomb, aswel?
The furry of dracula? a werewolf?
Another good one! WFRP 1st or 2nd edition.
I really want to cover WFRP at some point!
Good vid but needs more Skaven... YES YES
2:28 - I know, you kind of HAVE to ask people to like-and-subscribe in your videos these days ... but after your opening Vampire Counts pun, I'm pretty sure everyone had already done so by this point.
Its simple, if the video starts with a "hello." , it gets a like. Simple as.
The new versions do not compare. They don't capture the immersion of the original. It's my most borrowed game. I always had to track it down to get it back.
Have a nice sleep, Martha :)
Dracenfels wasn't a Vampire.
Fair point! He certainly was furious though
@jordansorcery yeah he was the Great Enchanter. He dabbled in several types of Dark Magic.
This game sucks...your blood!
🦇🩸"Uhhh..... *_BLAAH!!!"_* 🩸🦇 _("Scary Boy -&- Girls........Like _*_Plama-eating Monkeys_*_ from Mississauga!" )_
Great Video, Jordan (have a Happy & sacr!fice-free *_Sowan,_* I mean Halloween: "OHWWWWWWWWWooo❗"
Happy Halloween!
i wish i kept My copy of the Gamesworkshop Dracula, i traded it in when the FFG one came out and i bought the first edition of FFgs version.
Blimey, I didn't know this game has become such a legend. Impressive! 😃
Fury of Drachenfels sounds epic. So many options. Detlef Sierck & Genevieve dashing about the Old World, also maybe competing against Gotrek Gurnisson and Felix Jaeger. Unbeknowst to all, the incredible Thanquol has many plans a foot, the teams randomly come across them and defeat them, just minor things to the players. Till, nearing the end, if any Thanquol plan survives, things get super crazy.
