Have a general look at the eye first and you can see the rim of the lower lid you can see the tear film meniscus - that small river of fluid that sits along the lower lid margin, estimating that tear meniscus height, can actually compare the height of beam to the meniscus and also turn the beam horizontal and use beam width in a similar way so can widen and narrow the beam to estimate that tear meniscus, can measure that two ways with the slit lamp, make sure your slit lamp is calibrated .
