Charizard's Ultimate up taunt: Remember how the trainer was missing from 4 and Zard was standalone? Pokemon games have this thing where Pokemon don't obey you if they're too high levelled for them to respect you if you don't have enough badges (a metaphor for "proving yourself first" if you will). This change could be seen as Red/Leaf having finally tamed Charizard in reference to that. (Could also tie in to Origin's Charizard since that one obeyed Red more than Ash's Charizard obeyed Ash lol) Sonic's down taunt: a possible reference to one of his victory dances in the Sonic Advance series (and maybe Sonic Rush and Rush Adventure? I don't remember those as well). Seriously those sprites are famous with all those sprite animations using them back in the day lmao. Lucario's down taunt: think of Aura like Qi/Ki, like an inner power, then it starts making sense with how it ties in to one's body. It's pretty much every living being's energy. In that sense, Lucario is a fighter in the same sense as characters like Ryu (who uses Hado which's pretty similar as it's still Qi from one's body) and Terry (whose source is never really specified but I think it's "Earth's power" like Ness after Magicant…?) and… ugh… Goku (the prime example of Ki since DBZ uses it prominently)… Toon Link's down taunt: You could also say it's a representation of erratic fighting when there's a lot of ennemies onscreen in 3D Zeldas. Which, yes, is also tiring. :p (being exhausted at the end can also be seen as a reference to when he has very few hearts left in Wind Waker, during which his idle anim has him exhausted) Love the series btw. Can't wait for the 4, Ult, and Ult FP1 vids. :D
Diddy's side taunt actually has an origin. It comes from the guitar he had in donkey Kong 64, or it could be Dixie's guitar from dkc2. I can't believe he missed that one!
12:41 God, I love this voice line and will never get tired of hearing it. Also, the animation could just be a reference Sonic's love of victory dances/poses.
14:55 It's _clearly_ a reference to Goku charging ki, just like how the Falcon Kick and Falcon Punch were based on Kamen Rider. Honestly I don't know why people keep saying they want Goku in smash. He already is. I mean he's voiced by Sean Schemmel.
The charizard taunt where he stands tall and buffs out his chest. This is a guess cuz I'm too lazy to get my copy of ultimate but maybe, when they're in their fighting stance, charizard and Ridley are the same height. Maybe charizard goes on his toes as a way of saying "ha! I'm taller!" And Ridley's standing taunt is a way of saying, "no ur not"
The thing with Lucario's Aura being Fighting Type and not Psychic Type is actually based on the concept of Qi; known everywhere, of course, as Chi or Ki. Qi is a psuedo-scientific life force that is very much touched upon in many Asian martial arts, such as Taiji Quan/Tai Chi. Of course, "Quan" is pronounced like "Chuan" and "Qi" is pronounced like "Chee" in the Chinese language, so one should keep that in mind. "Chi" in Chinese is a completely different sound.
I feel like charizard’s ultimate taunts are showing how, after an orange islands episode in the anime, ash and charizard are much more in sync. Also, it may be just me, but Lucas’ down taunt makes him look like he’s going to use Picollo’s Special beam cannon from Dragon Ball Z
I feel like Charizard’s up taunt in Ultimate is Charizard attempting to size up an appontant as Charizard are always looking for a worthy challenge so he puffs his chest up and spreads his wings to make him look bigger to scare his competition. A similar strategy used by birds in a similar fashion. So I think it’s Charizard trying to make itself look bigger and more intimidating. Probably not the case but more food-for-thought.
All this time and you missed some of the most obvious references? Wario picking his nose is probably a reference to one of the most famous WarioWare microgames, Gold Digger.
Lucario’s down taint could be a reference to his introduction in the Subspace Emissary, where he’s perched on one leg atop a mountain. His side taunt is kind of similar to his back sprite in the fourth gen.
Sonic's down taunt may come from Sonic Battle, where breakdancing is a part of his moveset. I know that some of his moves were pulled from Sonic Battle, so it's certainly plausible.
Actually, Lucas's side taunt isn't original. In the trophy description of Lucas, it says he has the ability to communicate with animals. So rope snake was kinda talking to Lucas
Isn’t Lucario voiced by Sean Schemmel in Smash? Maybe the “Aura charge” taunt (the first one you mention when discussing Lucario) is a reference to Goku, a character Schemmel is well-known for voicing? I mean both that taunt and Lucario’s Aura Storm Final Smash make me think of Dragonball and Goku’s utilization of Ki energy.
God i really miss brawl sonic. Not his moveset but just his model, his personality, and voice lines. Ultimate sonic is serviceable i guess but it just doesn't scream his personality. He has a very static face and his voice lines are ripped straight from the games. I still cant believe they took out the "ur too slow" and "cmon step it up." One of the best taunts in the games.
im going to take a stab at the charizard stand up taunt. the reason could simply be that charizard is a dragon pokemon and dragons are loosly based on dinosaurs, which are said to be bird like(i know birds like to act intimidating cause i have one). Maybe it could be that, or the fact that charizard is a larger being comared to most pokemon and is showing his dominance.
I think Charizards up taunt is a reference to how in nature animals try to make themselves look bigger and more menacing, especially when fighting a rival, so what you said about it being like Ridley’s makes sense, because Ridley can be considered a rival to Charizard.
14:37 No no no! Lucario's first taunt pose can be referenced to Dragon Ball Z where Son Goku or any Z-Fighters charging up their KI (or energy) or transform into their super states. Am I right, or am I wrong?
Why does no one points out the fact that Ultimate messed up Wolf taunts? The one where he howls is well done in Brawl (17:35), but ultimate (17:40) opens up his snout in a way that would make it impossible to howl (basic phonetics and animal physiology). Also ultimate wolf down taunt straight breaks his jaw wtf.
If I remember correctly, that animation of sonic was first seen in the sonic advance games(though he rose up in the air at the end in that one), then rush (although slower in rush), and then '06. As well, a similar animation was used in sonic battle. It is stated sonic actually really likes to break dance. As well, that pose for diddy Kong comes from...the donkey Kong country cartoon. He does a similar pose in that cartoon when singing sometimes (I think. I may be remembering wrong though). The voice clips are original though, since they don't sound that animal like outside of smash.
Maybe lucario’s up taunt is based on charging ki like in dragon ball since aura and ki are similar and Sean Schimmel voices lucario in smash as well as goku
I actually think Charizard's down taunt in Ultimate may be a reference to some early Ken Sugimori artwork for Pokémon Red and Green, which has him facing the camera similarly with his mouth open in that pose
Aw, you mentioned the changes with some characters with brawl to Smash 4 and Ultimate. But not with Pit and his new voice! Other than that tiny nitpick, it’s all good! I just hope that this could be rectified with Smash 4 Taunts!
I think Charizarf Ultimate side taunt may be a reference to an attacking animation in the modern Pokémon games that are in 3d. The animation specifically is where his tail flick, just faster and with forward motion.
9:00 i think it may be a reference to the ability intimidate or some move that works similarly? (idk if he can actually have that ability or not). it's because in the animal kingdom, puffing your chest out and spreading your wings out like that makes you look bigger and more intimidating, often scaring off predators.
Charizard's taunt in Ultimate might be a reference to his original artwork cover from Pokemon Red, as well as the sprite from Yellow, which has a similar pose

So happy you’re continuing this series!
Toon Link up taunt ends up with the Wind Waker pose on most Artworks
For the side taunt of Lucario, it could be a reference to the first movie he was in when he uses the time flowers to see his previous owner.
Hi Aaron! I am a biiiggg fan and I love your videos. Thank you for your AWESOME videos. Can’t wait till next livestream!
I’ll always miss that “You’re too slow!” voice line
Lucario’s aura taunt is TOTALLY a reference to Dragon Ball!
Lucario even has the same voice actor as Goku!
Diddy Kong's third taunt is simular to when he gets a golden banana in DK64
I feel like Charizard’s up taunt in Ultimate is Charizard attempting to size up an appontant as Charizard are always looking for a worthy challenge so he puffs his chest up and spreads his wings to make him look bigger to scare his competition. A similar strategy used by birds in a similar fashion. So I think it’s Charizard trying to make itself look bigger and more intimidating. Probably not the case but more food-for-thought.
Nah it's just the Pokemon yellow sprite
You know, they also changed Pit’s voice lines for his taunts in later games.
J Waker The voice actor in general was changed. That happened to a few different characters though.
All this time and you missed some of the most obvious references? Wario picking his nose is probably a reference to one of the most famous WarioWare microgames, Gold Digger.
The charizard taunt where he stands up is may be a reference to his sprite in Pokémon yellow
Lucario’s down taint could be a reference to his introduction in the Subspace Emissary, where he’s perched on one leg atop a mountain. His side taunt is kind of similar to his back sprite in the fourth gen.
You missed King Dedede's *True* Down Taunt. Where you just hold down on the control stick and let the magic happen.
Toon links up taunt at the end has a reference to a piece of artwork from wind waker
It’s been so long, thank you sir for your consideration during these hard times.
12:27 I always thought the voice line was a reference to Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), where he could say it occasionally.
(I realize that Goku and Lucario have different Japanese voices. Just wanted that out there before I got “well actually”-ed by someone.)
Diddy’ clapping taunt is from Donkey Kong 64. And good to see you back in action, man
14:37 No no no! Lucario's first taunt pose can be referenced to Dragon Ball Z where Son Goku or any Z-Fighters charging up their KI (or energy) or transform into their super states. Am I right, or am I wrong?
they do share the same actors
I think Charizard's up taunt is a reference to his Pokémon sprite. Specifically Yellow.
Lucas side taunt is a reference to how all the Mother protagonist can talk to animals with their physic powers
Charizard's new up taunt could be from its gigantamax pose
Maybe charizard up taunt is a reference to the anime where charizard thought he was better than everyone else
15:04 in a pokemon movie he save Mew by doing this
5:10 The salt is real
Charizards first taunt is him posing as his first sprite in gen 1
That’s what I thought, from Pokémon Yellow right?
i think lucas’s up taunt is him wanting to act tough by running in place but slips, but the fact that he’s clumsy is also a valid point
I was thinking the same thing, his side taunt voice line is way less intimidating and his mouth just does not work
Sonic's up taunt seems to be semi-original.
I would joke that Lucario's up taunt is inspired by Goku, especially how in Smash 4, his voice actor is the same as Goku in English dub
When ROB, the character that only appears in two non smash Bros games, has more direct taunt references than half the characters in brawl
