    My thoughts, exactly, for the past 40+ years of having base model Porsches as my daily drivers. In the very beginning, it was all about which model I could afford.......base model. As my career built and my computer business became successful..........base model. When I retired, it wasn’t about money any longer..........I can afford any Porsche available...........base model. I, like you, feel that the experience of driving a Porsche every day should be done in a..........base model. It allows for greatest sensations without pushing you too far over the edge. Though I have a racing background in motorcycles, on a daily basis I feel that most cars today are too powerful for most drivers and they only buy them to keep up appearances for friends or acquaintances. I love your mantra of The Art of Driving because it highlights the pleasure we should get from driving a sports cars.........not over our heads. I was a skilled racer and am now 75 years old. Expectedly, I no longer have the motoring skills I had in my 30s, but I can still handle a car rather well even as I age. All because of my choice to continue driving manual base model Porsches. When you reach my age, I just know you’ll feel the exact same way you do right now. Thanks for another wonderful video.

    I’ve owned numerous Porsche 911 since 1998 with half being S models and half Carrera base... always struggling with the values of each. When looking at buying a 2020 992 Carrera S vs. Carrera base, I really struggled. After driving both and watching this video... I finally realized the truth. The base really provides the ultimate experience of a true Porsche enthusiast and the best daily experience to push the car to the limits within the normal limitations of a busy city. Sure......an open road with no limitations would make the S ideal.... but I love pushing the base to the max every turn vs. the S model - and always holding back..This review...above all...truly articulates the why behind the base vs. S model. Bravo for reminding me why I love Porsche.

    Thanks so much for sharing the video Janko. After three years of GT4 ownership, I decided to go for the 992 Base Carrera. Picked it up in September 2022, it’s presently in the garage over winter. Looking forward to bringing it out of ‘hibernation’ from April 1st 2023. Your video is beautifully presented with excellent content. Kind regards, from the UK.

However, I felt that I couldn't watch another one of your videos without commenting on how spectacular the production and format of your videos are... I have never owned a Porsche. I have only had BMWs but I am making the transition to Porsche. I really love the idea of the 991.1 4S because of the look, sound, and prices. It is difficult to make a decision. Even two years after you created this video, I stumbled upon it. And perfect timing! I owned a base carerra 997 and am getting the itch for another Porsche. As I consider ALL of the the possibilities in models, I now realize that I've been wasting SO MUCH time on this decision. Back and forth...and forth and back...S...4S...GTS...Base...and around again. I, like 18echost below, have come to grips with the fact that a base will be perfect for my needs, driving capacities, and enjoyment....key on the last word...enjoyment. Thanks Janko for your poetic discourse on the real simple passion of driving a 911. You helped me make the decision that I needed to make. Now, what color? EC/Indianapolis

    Just bought a base Carrera and this video inspired me to do it. I’ve always taken the fastest version of every car I’ve purchased. It kept me from looking at 911s, because they are $200K USD. However, you are right about cars being so fast you can’t really enjoy them on public roads. I don’t track my cars. Bought a base cabriolet in adventurine green. The cinematography on this video is just gorgeous.

    I totally agree with you, after owning 997 turbo manual for 9 years I began to appreciate more the sensations of driving and realized at the end its too fast for the streets, it was a performance car in its time and I enjoyed it but now I have changed accelerating, speed and cornering are elements but not the most important, driving sensation in harmony with all the surrounding environment makes an enjoyable drive, for me I wouldn’t go for more than 4s cabriolet because it’s seriously fast car, and i am considering Carrera cabriolet with all performance parts as an option because i think i can drive it hard and push it

    Thank you for such a beautiful interpretation and experience. I guess today, for many other industries (clothing, watches, tech-related products), most of us are lost in the search of the record-breaking machine(s) because that's what grabs the attention. Did we become more materialistic, in a way? Definitely. We lost the ability to appreciate something and see certain thing as for what it is. Hence the reason why the gentleman who owns this basic Carrera model felt that you were simply defending him. If we are a true motor fan and Porsche fan, it wouldn't matter what model you are driving, you would still enjoy it and see it as for what they offer rather than how fast can it hit 0 to 100, what's the top speed and most importantly, if it is expensive enough to brag about it. It's shame, really. However, I am very glad to see people like you who really loves and continues to perform the art of driving.
    Thank you.

    • @JankoLind
      @JankoLind  2 роки тому +2

      I agree; I might have an idea why...
      The Porsche community is large, but not all people can drive all cars. Therefore, many judgments are made based on statistics, and by journalists pushing the models, the OEM gets more profit from. The feeling of a pure connection, or as I call it, the Art of Driving, is, for me at least, worth more than any 0-60 time. It is a complicated discussion Janko, but in the end it just comes down to emotive connectivity for each and every individual. Loved the photo's and story telling.. :-) it will be interesting to see your comments on the boxster gts 4.0 litre. manual. I keep a convertible now for that low speed driving engagement characteristics. As more and more electronics insulate us from these experiences we move ever closer to the "dead inertia" vehicles in Ev's. very functional, but zero soul.

    I took delivery of the 992 C4S, rear-steering, PASM, front end lift, etc., etc., etc., on Oct 15. I’ve put 6,200 miles on it and it is a wonderful, wonderful car. Having said that, I agree with Jacks...I think the absolute base Carrera would have been entirely adequate. This C4S (I do like the “4” though) is, truthfully, too much car. I’m not belittling the “S”, I’m just saying there could have been just as much fun...”maybe more”...with the base. Can’t imagine the 992 Turbo S, I wouldn’t and won’t buy one; too much car!!!!!!!

    The comments about the base Carrera sounded similar to what Nick Murray said. For B road use, power is not key, and using more of the car, more of the time is possible (and more fun), not so with the higher power cars. One downside of base cars is that sometimes an option is not available, e.g rear steering on the 991.

    In the endless search for the highest HP & torque ratings as you climb the latter in the 911 lineup. I’ve always ended up preferring the base 911. With every variation you can buy, there’s just another version one step above.. it really never ends until you’re in a GT2RS. The base will still get you in trouble on the street. Enough power that 90% driving it will never be able to feel it’s full potential. And the power is plenty enough on the track as well. With PASM standard on the base 911, and having the the same wide body as it’s bigger brother has made the base even more attractive. Yes the S is more powerful, but the GTS will be more powerful than the S, then the Turbo, and Turbo S following that. It never ends.

      Sasa Milosavljevic a 991.2 Carrera 7-spd is an amazing car! I’ve got the 7-spd Carrera T myself and it’s a complete riot to drive. I much prefer it to the 8th gen cars and to the 991.2 Turbo S which is outlandishly fast and therefore detracting feel and engagement from the drive. It’s much more fun driving the T at 9/10’s everywhere you go than a 992 4S or a 991.2 Turbo S at 4/10’s because they will send you behind bars for life if you exploit their potential on public roads.

    you're right about how Porsche have changed from being fully functional focused to primarily profit-oriented - Porsche are well known for being the only non-exotic marque to make 5 figures of profit per car sold. I still love them; being ripped-off not so much (which is why I'm still holding on to my old car while hoping one day to get a GT3 slot! I would like to order a base 992, because I don't like high horsepower cars, modern cars are too fast, once my body gets used to the acceleration, it feels super boring and you don't have time to enjoy the engine revving when accelerating. However, on Internet, people says the Rear Axle Steering is a must, is it true? Because to add this option, I have to upgrade to S, which costs a lot, around 20K Euro. I am not planning to drive on track, only highway, mountain roads and countryside.

      Hi Jun, have you seen my Rear Axle steering comparison?
      ua-cam.com/video/qRPfRgUJkvc/v-deo.html
      On a 991, for me, it's a must have. On a 992 hmm difficult one for me. What's more important IF you live in the northern parts is PTW that's something that bothers me more on the 992 than the RAS...

    I have to admit, especially when driving around on anything but the best B-roads, turbocharged vehicles definitely have their place. NA is great and all, but unless you live in the country side or make it a point to constantly drive your toy to the mountains you really don't get to appreciate it. In our 2006 Boxster S I find myself in California traffic, even during my spirited driving sessions. Additionally I adore the manual but cannot help but wonder how the PDK feels in average conditions... it kind of annoys me knowing it's the faster box AND more practical. As you say you must stress an NA motor to get that glorious sound and rushing acceleration but it's beginning to feel like a novelty and requires so much focus. Conversely, squeeze the throttle on any 2.0L 4 cylinder turbo vehicle and you're up to highway speeds without a fuss. They are the better highway cruisers and do it more efficiently as well.

    I’m watching this video for the second time taking your advice about considering base models of 911. However, I want to have at least the PTV which is optional on the Carrera 4 and Standard on the S. Could you please shine the light on the Carrera 4 since there’s no comparison videos between Carrera 4 (base) with PTV and the Carrera S?!

    • @JankoLind
      @JankoLind  4 роки тому +1

      Extremely good comment, Ahmed, thank you for contributing to our community. It’s a tuff one. In Sweden 🇸🇪 between the Carrera 4 (with PTV) and the Carrera S is 8 000 dollar 💵. Looking at the depreciation of the cars I THINK 🤔 the Carrera 4 will take a slightly deeper turn. In addition the Carrera S, could be ordered with manual gearbox very soon wish make me personally more interested in the S. But then as I said in the video the engagement in the drive is more present in the Carrera and if they hade the options of PTV and rear axle steering they would sell less of other models as this thread is a proof of. You need to evaluate your needs and then buy the car based on how you use it.

    An interesting choice you are doing, base 911 vs 911S. Then we have the Cayman GTS 4.0? I'm a Cayman S, 2016, with no turbocharger owner and is considering a 911 base model. Well, these two cars are so different and is more a question of feelings if we forget the price difference between these two. The GTS 4.0 gives a hell of a lot of pleasure for less money. It's not easy being a Porsche brainwashed driver. Watched your video regarding the 718 Spyder and got the impression, this is a real Porsche driving machine.

    • @JankoLind

    • @JankoLind
      @JankoLind  3 роки тому +1

      I've not tested it with a PDK gearbox which is electronic. On a manual, it is a mechanical look. But if the PTV is not disconnected when turning off the PSM you should feel a difference.
