Jerrs says in an interview that the scene with Bookman in his apartment was the hardest he's ever cracked up and the most takes he's ever needed to get a scene
That's a line that could've been absolutely cringey if not for the perfect delivery. Just imagine if a character on _The Big Bang Theory_ would've said that line...
The actor playing Mr. Bookman, Philip Baker Hall, died yesterday. His 4 minutes in Seinfeld were so iconic that they're commemorated in news articles about his death around the world.
I do not know how many minutes The Soup Nazi was in..... but he is still making quite a living doing store openings and the like... Mr. Bookman is in the same league..unforgettable
I don't know how he managed to hold it together through each smile! I would have lost it with the first rant! I was laughing with every rant and the fact that he is a library cop catching "library delinquents" lool!!
@@minchrono24lover27 you can give respect or genius for Larry and Jerry for picking the "write" actors for the "write" part. Larry Charles wrote that episode based on Dragnet's Joe Friday.

You buy a jar of Folgers Crystals, you put it in the cupboard, you forget about it. Then later on when you need it, it's there. It lasts forever. It's freeze-dried. Freeze-dried crystals."
An absolutely brilliant character, brilliantly played. So funny to watch - and Jerry was constantly trying to not laugh.... there must be tons of bloopers from these scenes, but I've never seen one.

Thank you, PHILLIP BAKER HALL for doing your part to help tame mankind with your gift and talent. Your Mr. Bookman character was hilarious!! May GOD bless your legacy and surviving family.
I remember when the librarian was a much older woman: Kindly, discreet, unattractive. We didn't know anything about her private life. We didn't WANT to know anything about her private life. She didn't HAVE a private life.
To me, it is always amusing to see scenes like those in this clip where Jerry finds himself up against a trained actor. They usually make him look like a foolish, giggly amateur.
To be fair, it's not like he pretends otherwise. Even poked fun at it in the episode when they were shooting their pilot, and one executive complained that Jerry couldn't act.
The only thing that doesn't «work» in this scene is the fact that Jerry DOES drink coffee, in fact he's at the coffee shop all the time - and he's not drinking tea.
Oh, I just rewatched The Talented Mr Ripley and I came here because I remembered his performance as Bookman. He was in Ripley with the last actor (playing the lawyer here - James Rebhorn). Must be fun for actors to cross paths on projects over the years. This role was iconic! RIP. 🙏💫
Mr Bookman is probably one of if not THE favourite sub-character - I can remember the first time I saw that episode - even when it went to air it is clear Jerry can hardly contain himself - how many wonderfully silly scenes were all of those who grew up with Seinfeld trully so fortunate to have witnessed.
Mr. Bookman has gone on to protect the great library in the sky. Way to go Joe, (Philip Baker Hall) and Rest in Peace.
RIP

One of the great character actors of all time. Watch him in "Hard Eight", Paul Thomas Anderson's first film.

One of the reasons that Seinfeld is classic is because that every additional character is crafted to perfection. Everything is completely original.

i like how he instinctively opens the books to check n the date .
Wow, great catch I always thought it was for dramatic effect. Talk about getting into a role. What a great note!

Mister bookman is my hero. I always hated seeing those wee wees in the middle of an excellent story.
That was my 8th grade Spanish textbook- peepees and weewees on nearly every page.
Round
You loved it, Round, you joy boy. It made you the incorrigible degenerate you are. 😊
:)
When I was in Elementary School I came across a few books from the library unfortunately a few of them had Peepees and Weewees scribed into them.
Especially The Cat in the Hat and The Five Chinese Brothers!
That coat swing just adds to it
Bookman and Jackie Chiles are probably the best cameos in the series run.
How about "That's DeMornay. Rebecca DeMornay"?
In addition to the dialogue, what killed me (and continues to) is his pointing that finger emphasising the seriousness of the matter 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.

RIP Phillip Baker Hall (1931-2022), Goodbye Mr. Bookman... I'll miss you...
Philip Baker Hall's guest turn is the highlight in one of the best ever episodes. Perfectly pitched performance, beautifully written.
The greatest crime in the history of the Emmys is that Phillip Baker Hall didn't even get a Emmy nomination for this performance as Mr. Bookman.
He should've gotten an Emmy for that first scene alone, let alone the rest of that episode.
Criminal that he didn't get an award for that performance.
This was the scene that made me love Seinfeld

Is Mr Bookman implying anything here about Jerry Seinfeld?
Ha ha
He`s doing a Jack Web in Dragnet impersonation. Brilliant!!
