David, this is the best trip report I've ever watched from you. The discussion of Northwest's history in Tokyo (with great old images), getting around the airport, and even including the brand and model of each seat on the airplane is really going above and beyond, very good stuff! But my favorite enhancement here from your older videos is your voice speaking all the narration instead of just captions on the screen. That makes it so much more pleasant to watch. I hope you keep making videos with all of those great additions which very few others ever include. I am not interested in a calendar, however.
He has always done spoken narration on his "Brutally Honest" series of flight reviews, that's not new. The videos with the captions are the identical flight reviews in the "Trip Report" series.
While I understand the appeal, most people try to minimize their time at the airport, regardless how cool it is (possible exception is SIN only). And kinda unfair, Asia will kick their western counterparts into the curb even more, and Airports are something which are much harder to keep up to date/upgrade
Thank you for including a bit of history about Northwest Airlines. My first flight ever was with NWA on a DC-9 just before they retired the type. They have a special place in my heart!
Me to Tom I used to take the northwest flight quite regularly from London Gatwick to MSP on there Dc-10-40 I really liked northwest and seeing all the red tails on arrival many dc-9s the good ole days .
My first fight was also on a Northwest DC-9, but on the other end of its time in their fleet. It was Cincinnati to Memphis in 1987, only the second year NWA operated DC-9, acquired from their merger with Republic. After 28 years in the fleet, Delta finally retired their last DC-9 in 2014.
Considering your ticket only cost $400 I think you got good service. Expectations have to be in line with the price paid for the service. Your 2020 flight may have been more premium but the price you paid was also more than double what you did for this one. Also, service isn’t just food and pillows on the plane it’s the ease of booking flights, check in process, security screening, baggage wait time and did your bags make it with you, and friendliness of staff on the ground and on the plane.
Besides being an aviation geek, i’m also a railway fan with Japanese trains being my absolute favourite. i’m really impressed David, that you’re able to rattle off all those Tokyo train lines and explain the thru service very well! “Simply Railway” for the future? I loved the recent Japan content and can see the interest and knowledge you have in the country.
@@ben_drs02 Maybe they could do a collaboration in the future, or switch roles for a special. Their reviewing styles are very similar, including giving lots of background of the journey and practical tips. Love them both!
im subscribed to both simply aviation and simply railway 😭😭 but there should be a simply network of channels, possibly including a "simply hotels" or "simply cruises" channel
Your reviews make me very nostalgic. I lived in Tokyo from 1967-68 and then again June 1969-71 going to Haneda Airport frequently. I then returned to the US and worked for the first wholesale tour company selling group tours to Asia initially using Northwest Orient Airlines (as it was called then). Over the years I've flown more than 20 million miles and now hold Delta Silver medallion status for life as a million miler. UA 3 million miler and AA almost 5 million miler. I've see it all and your video reminded me of a part of it. Thank you!!
Sitting here with my laptop and I thought "let me go check if there are any new Delta videos" as I am travelling Delta One in August and want to see what Delta is doing right or wrong... This video is of course sitting at the top of my UA-cam homepage. Always love Simply Aviation video's and especially Brutally Honest. David you need to have your own TV show
@@ericthemauveWhy is complimenting an airline’s service indicative of someone working for that airline? Delta is great (most of the time), you don’t need to be a Delta employee to notice that 😂
I appreciated the history segment about Northwest Airlines. I've lived in Minneapolis for most of my life and I remember the days when Northwest was everywhere at MSP. I do quite miss seeing all of those redtails. I wish Delta would paint one of their aircraft in a Northwest Airlines heritage livery, kind of like what American Airlines does.
I fly Delta most of the time. Even in first class they have reduced the quality of meal service and presentation. I live in Bermuda and before Covid they always served a hot lunch. Now it is just a box lunch, and not of high quality. Still a good airline but the cutbacks have been apparent.
@@_w_w_ Delta… worse than UNITED??? I’m sorry but that is the fattest crock of caca I’ve heard, Delta is consistently rated above United in both on-time departures and cabin service. I’m not saying Delta is perfect by any means, but come on.
It’s unfortunate DL basically abandoned *ALL* of Southeast Asia even when everything opened back up again (they’re offloading all such connections to their partners at Korean Air, fwiw)… 😢
Your brutally honest content is awesome. I really appreciate how you also went over airport details, transportation options, the works. Thanks for taking us along!
I’m very amazed on how detailed and accurate descriptions of Haneda access and the airport itself. That was something Japanese people could do for visitors.
Thank you for the Northwest history! My second-ever trip as a 10-year old in 1975 was LAX-MSP on Northwest Orient - a DC10 outbound and 747 on the return. That was when people scheduled their flights to try the new widebodies - and my parents were as excited as I was to be aboard those jumbo jets. What a great memory. Thanks, too, for your candid review of Delta's current trans-Pacific service offering.
I would honestly buy the calendar if you guys decide to produce it. I will place it in front of my desk, so I can take a few minutes here and there between work to look at the pictures and let my mind fly..at least my mind! Keep up the good work, this has become one of my fav channels of all times!
The longer variant A330-300 was the shortest range wide body on the market at any point in its existence, since it first entered service in 1994 with range of 4,000 nmi (basically tied with A300-600R and the short range 767-300 for the first 6-8 years). And now, the second generation of that same "short range" wide body flies trans-Pacific between LAX and Haneda with plenty of range to spare. That really puts those ever-increasing numbers in perspective. Speaking of amazing range... Although the upcoming A321XLR doesn't quite have enough range for this route, it does technically have enough range and enough ETOPS rating for Tokyo to San Francisco. I still doubt anyone will fly it on that route, but I guess they could if carrying no more payload beyond 200 passengers and their bags. Wow
I would love to buy one of your calenders with pictures!! Please do it!! Now on to Delta. As a diamond medallion for many years I agree. Delta does the basics right. They have really been a let down in recent years. Ive actually been looking at taking other airline for long haul flights. But great video. I love them your reviews.
I have always loved Delta’s service. Pre-pandemic I had an incredible economy flight from Miami to Rome on an A330 with Delta. Post-pandemic I’ve had plenty of domestic economy flights with Delta but have also treated myself to some domestic First Class flights. Their A321-NEO first class from LAX to MIA was awesome. Comfortable, spacious redesigned seat and IFE. More recently, earlier this month, I flew Delta domestic FC from MIA to BOS. This was a much different experience because the plane was 20+ years old and the layout reflected that. I have to say though, the flight crew and meal service were phenomenal on that flight and despite the aging cabin, my flight was superb.
I agree with your assessment. They're top tier in the USA but not abroad. I tool that flight from LAX to SYD pre pandemic and it was amazing for economy. I recently took em from LIM to ATL aboard their A350 and was very disappointed in service and aircraft barely anything worked. Loved the history in this video and yes I'd definitely purchase a calendar if you put a few out
Years ago I flew between Hong Kong and Tokyo Narita with Delta. On the day of the return flight there was a typhoon which delayed the flight and we didn’t arrive into Hong Kong until after midnight. To my surprise Delta arranged several shuttle buses to send the passengers into different locations of the city even though it was their only flight into the HKG. Even as a star alliance gold with United, I do consider Delta a better airline.
I love how you provided the historical aspects of Northwest Orient and Delta. I agree with your assessment on Delta. I feel that, in general, Delta is one of the better US airlines
I think I would definitely buy a calendar with pictures like that one! Hopefully there is a company that could offer printing in Europe, the Americas, and Asia so that shipping doesn't become the majority of the cost of buying the calendar.
When I flew delta in economy Atlanta to Milan the service was nice but when I came back Rome to Detroit the service was fantastic. The crew was friendly and they kept on offering drinks and treats. Didn’t even have to go back to collect anything. They brought it to my seat. They’re People oriented and the welcome safety video really speaks to their hospitality. They’re cut above the other US carriers.
What you should know about airline food is that it’s not as bland as you think it is. It’s the low humidity and pressurized environment of the aircraft that causes your taste buds to work less efficiently, making the food taste bland. It would have more flavour if eaten on the ground
Hey I just want to say thank you for making this video. You cover such great detail on flights. I like the short history and train connection segments and how smooth it transitions to the flight. It helps a lot knowing what travel would be like to other Cities. I've been looking at flights with Delta flying out to Tokyo from the U.S. with A330 neo and this video answers a lot of questions I've been wondering on what the onboard experience is like post covid now that Japan is opening up again to tourists. I hope you continue making these kinds of videos and I love the idea of the calendar background!
In June 2022, I flew on Delta's A330neo in Comfort Plus on the route BOS-TLV-BOS. I will be doing that again this Saturday once again in Comfort Plus on the A330neo
I flew LAX to HND on AA back in February and it does seem similar in that Delta doesn't seem to have the same edge. It will be interesting to see how Delta does when I fly DTW to AMS in October on their a330-300ceo. It might also be worth mentioning that Delta has free Wi-Fi domestically now for Skymile members (free membership), which is a significant edge over AA and United.
I must have flown out of Haneda the same time as you. The SkyClub at Haneda was new, fresh, and delayed by 4 hours there. The added Sakura delights helped pass the time.
I would take this in a second! We're flying to Hawaii from the east coast next month which is an 11 hour journey, and granted we aren't going nonstop, we have a layover in San Fran, but between both legs we get NOTHING! No meals, no amenity kit, not even an IFE. And the flight was $900 RT. So I wouldn't be complaining about a thing.
I love haneda airport. I love sitting down on the benches outside on the deck and watching the planes takeoff and land. It is by far my favorite airport in my travels. I make my goal to either land or takeoff when I make a trip to Vietnam (pre-covid of course). Ill be returning 2024 though. So excited
I did the Haneda-LAX flight in Delta Economy last month and Iw as quite surprised at how spacious and accomodating it was. I actually flew Delta One from Detroit to Haneda the week prior to this flight, and it was only a marginal difference in the "discomfort" for Economy. I was pleased with their Economy offering.
From my experience, I think taking Toei Asakusa Line (都営地下浅草線) via Keikyū Airport Line is the easiest way to go to central Tokyo. You can transit at Shimbashi (新橋) or Asakusa (浅草) with Tokyo Metro Ginza Line (銀座線) or a loop of Yamanote Line (山手線) at Shimbashi but you must to make sure that you get the right train at Haneda Airport Station.
Okay 2 requests: MORE AIRPORT STUFF PLEASE! B. Do some more African brutally honest's Ethiopian! Kenyan! Good review as usual though! loved it, need more Brutally honest!!!
I’m flying Delta DTW-HND in a few weeks, so this video is timely. Only regret now after seeing this video is I’m seated on the right side of the aircraft when departing Haneda. Just checked the seat map and all the left window seats are gone 😢. Oh well, will hope for other sunset opportunities. Thanks for posting!
I truly enjoyed this very informative video, particularly the ancillary information such as the Northwest history, the rail connections in Tokyo and the detailed seat information. Very entertaining in every way.
Big shoutout to David from Simply Aviation for posting this video on UA-cam. I would highly recommend you to review airlines such as: Austrian Airlines: Vienna (VIE) - Frankfurt (FRA) - Economy Class Air Premia: Frankfurt (FRA) - Seoul (ICN) - Premium Economy Class Korean Air: Seoul (ICN) - New York (JFK) - Business Class (Upper Deck) *Pease take second daily flight to JFK (KE 85) since its flown by B747* JetBlue Airways: New York (JFK) - London (LHR) - Mint Studio Ryanair: London (STN) - Vienna (VIE) - Economy Class I would suggest if you can review these flights sometime in August with the trip reports being uploaded sometime in November. I would highly encourage you to remind your patreons to donate extra money to your channel in order for you to be able to take these flights. Thank you so much and I hope to see these trip reports on your channel as soon as they're ready!
I flew Delta from MSP to ICN in their A350, and the service was similar, though I don't remember them having the snacks in the rear. I've also flown United from Tokyo Narita to Newark, and the Delta service was magnitudes better. It's been nearly 10 years since I flew American longhaul, so I can't compare them yet.
Another great video David. Loved the NWA history. Also, that was a stunning photo over Tokyo. I’m looking forward to my Delta flight from LA to Sydney in September. Keep up the good work 👍👍
I agree with your complaint about the basic features of the seat. For whatever reason, U.S. carriers aren't interested in providing the little conveniences like flip-down cup holders on the tray tables and such. Also a bit odd not to have USB-C on either the screen or the power port on a brand-new plane. The Big Three have definitely taken advantage of the Covid cutbacks to get rid of little things to save money.
I flew Delta between Seattle and Tokyo Haneda in September 2023, traveling from Portland Oregon. Delta always impresses me when it comes to customer service whether domestic or international. Unfortunately, Delta completely dropped the Portland-Haneda nonstop flights and sold the Haneda spot to United for them to use it for Haneda-Honolulu flights, however might return due to Alaska-Hawaiian merger.
Delta is commencing daily non-stop flights between Seattle and Taipei from June 2024 with their Airbus A330-900ER, which I'm about to fly in economy in a week when I made this comment. I'm glad that I came across this review to know what to expect during the flight. Thanks for the Brutally Honest video!
@19:12 that was quite the firm landing (and no im not calling it a hard landing, a firm landing is still acceptable in terms of maintenance standards while a hard landing above 2.4G has to be inspected.
I just got home from Japan via HND to LAX and was there when that EVA and Thai airways had an accident. Anyways it nice you touched on Delta and NWs history. NW was my first long haul flight from Guam and I remember flying them back in 1987 and stopping over in NRT on the way to LAX. I even flew them up until 2005 back home to Guam. I also flew with AA's PE on my recent flight. And man Delta did good on this one with their services. However I can't complain since I fly AA a lot on via non-rev. Safe travels!
My God, I do missed Delta's Asian routes days, used to fly from Thailand to Detroit via Narita and it was always great. It's never the same after they cancelled Asian routes, and off-load connections via Korean Air instead.
14:34. Whoever came up with that oval tray design has not eaten many meals on Economy Class flights. It's the most useless and unpractical catering tray I've ever experienced. Big plus for a proper napkin though.
I would normally just skip to the part where it is about the flight review but you made it so interesting, about the history/background of Delta and Japan. Great video i must say!
DTW is my home airport so i fly delta a lot. delta has really reduced its service post covid. then again so has every other transportation provider in the world; i am talking cruise lines to trains.
They don't use the Boeings on the west coast to HND routes so you get a better experience I think when flying HND to DTW/ATL and maybe also MSP. You see similar things when flying to South America via ATL/JFK. The JFK route uses the Boeing and the Atlanta is more likely to use the neo. Not sure about coach seats, but the D1 are different. For example you get a closing door suite on DTW-HND, but I don't think they offer that on the LAX or SEA route.
_Good at the basics._ Faint praise but depending on the price it's not necessarily a criticism. On the other hand I'd describe the LCC Air Asia as "good at doing the basics" and it's a money saving operation with the slogan "Now everyone can fly." In that case it _is_ praise.
It’s so nice to see the history briefing of Northwest airlines. It was very sad when delta decided to dehub Narita, and focus on Haneda & Incheon. It just like the end of an era that Northwest has been built since WW2. By the way, The Northwest Airlines History Center is located very close to the Minneapolis airport, you can even get there by light rail. It’s a must visit if you stop by MSP. I went there so many times for my thesis research, the staff in the history center were very nice and helpful . Highly recommended!
Most US carriers only do the bare minimum and that’s that, which is summed up by the quality of food they served. I think people have an unrealistic belief in what they will get flying in economy. Airlines could do more, but choose not to as cost to much.
I mean, Americans who fly *Qatar Airways, Emirates, and EVA Air* have set these “unrealistic beliefs” on how airline economy should be like; hell, the Economy class product of those three airlines I mentio would destroy even US *International BUSINESS CLASS!* 😮
I love how this channel specializes in economy class, which is what all of us are actually going to be flying. Sometimes I get really bored of all of those business class reviews.
I enjoyed the video very much, especially the history of North West Airlines, of which Delta took over. I personally would choose ANA or JAL over Delta, because their regular economy has a more substantial meal service, however I look at Delta as a 3rd option, but ahead of United or American.
Great video, David! Thanks so much for the shout out! Fascinating to see how much has changed since 2020…

I did the Haneda-LAX flight in Delta Economy last month and Iw as quite surprised at how spacious and accomodating it was. I actually flew Delta One from Detroit to Haneda the week prior to this flight, and it was only a marginal difference in the "discomfort" for Economy. I was pleased with their Economy offering.
fantastic video as always, been a huge fan of the extra details put into the brutally honest series. I'd also love a simply aviation calendar!!
Kenyan! Air Tanzania!!!! they dont nearly as much attention on youtube and are very rarely covered, I also dont think you've tried the Air tanzania Dar- Mumbai flight, which if you did, it would be insane, Please please do them sometime in the future, would be mega epic. Good review as usual though! loved it, need more Brutally honest!!!
I would be interested in the calender!! Great video as always :)
19:35
That ouch moment... 😁
I would definitely buy such a calendar
I’m flying Delta DTW-HND in a few weeks, so this video is timely. Only regret now after seeing this video is I’m seated on the right side of the aircraft when departing Haneda. Just checked the seat map and all the left window seats are gone 😢. Oh well, will hope for other sunset opportunities. Thanks for posting!
Sure miss the sight of Northwest Airlines here in Manila. Those Queens in Red, sights of my childhood
Wow Delta provides quite excellent service to economy passengers!
Thanks for coming to Japan!
I truly enjoyed this very informative video, particularly the ancillary information such as the Northwest history, the rail connections in Tokyo and the detailed seat information. Very entertaining in every way.
I’m stunned that Delta shut down the NRT hub.
YES I would buy like 20 calendars
That Mt. Fuji view is mesmerizing. I will be super interested in getting a calendar, but shipping to Korea can be pricy..
Would love a Simply Aviation calendar!
I would seriously be interested in a calendar!
Big shoutout to David from Simply Aviation for posting this video on UA-cam. I would highly recommend you to review airlines such as:
Austrian Airlines: Vienna (VIE) - Frankfurt (FRA) - Economy Class
Air Premia: Frankfurt (FRA) - Seoul (ICN) - Premium Economy Class
Korean Air: Seoul (ICN) - New York (JFK) - Business Class (Upper Deck) *Pease take second daily flight to JFK (KE 85) since its flown by B747*
JetBlue Airways: New York (JFK) - London (LHR) - Mint Studio
Ryanair: London (STN) - Vienna (VIE) - Economy Class
I would suggest if you can review these flights sometime in August with the trip reports being uploaded sometime in November. I would highly encourage you to remind your patreons to donate extra money to your channel in order for you to be able to take these flights. Thank you so much and I hope to see these trip reports on your channel as soon as they're ready!
The flight was from Tokyo to Los Angeles but in the intro the airport shown is not Haneda but Lax instead
I would definitely be interested in a calendar
Another great video David. Loved the NWA history. Also, that was a stunning photo over Tokyo. I’m looking forward to my Delta flight from LA to Sydney in September. Keep up the good work 👍👍
Best one I’ve seen so far. Better than greener grass. I love your airport information. Quality work!!
Delta is my go to airline, they were the first airline I ever flew on and I haven’t looked back.
I would be very interested in buying the calendar. Awesome video btw
Safe travels!
although i wouldn't be able to buy it, i totally buy the calendar idea. i'd really love to see one!
Haneda Airport will gain yet another train line when JR East completes its construction in 2032 with a direct connection to Tokyo Station.
That price is unreal. We paid almost $3,000 for roundtrip from St. Louis to Tokyo via Minneapolis from late September to mid October.
3:33 was Delta/Northwest at it's apex. 2009-2013 NRT between 1300-2100 was wall-to-wall wide-bodies and passengers. I miss those days. cool video
Brutally Honest is always good and I can't get enough of them, Northwest's history (with photos) was a real step up
That sunset view of Fuji on your takeoff was breathtaking
Yes....PLEASE do that calendar. I'd buy it!
Big plus for a proper napkin though.
great vid, you should try ita's new a330neo
I would normally just skip to the part where it is about the flight review but you made it so interesting, about the history/background of Delta and Japan. Great video i must say!
I loved this video. Also a calendar? 👀👀👀 yes plz
I always appreciate aviation history, especially after in the US there have been so many mergers.
DTW is my home airport so i fly delta a lot. delta has really reduced its service post covid. then again so has every other transportation provider in the world; i am talking cruise lines to trains.
Awesome report as always, you deliver outstanding content! I for one would be very much interested in a calendar! Safe travels
Great video - history lesson, travel vlog, and flight review all in one; loved it!
I’m flying on the a330-900neo this fall from Minneapolis. I used to fly on the NW 747. I’m excited to be able to travel to Japan again.
Simply Aviation calendar? YES PLEASE!!!
We need a Brutally Honest episode of JetBlue from New York JFK to London!!!
12:46 that sunset shot of Mt. Fuji tho. Gorgeous.
