In this video, I show how to replace the waterpump on this 2015 Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi V8 Engine. It is probably the same process for a 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.7L Hemi. This water pump was leaking from the front of the housing behind the pulley. The bearing on the front of the water pump was trashed as well and had a lot of extra play in it. This caused the waterpump pulley to wobble all around. The truck smelled like antifreeze for the last month or two, so the pump has likely been weeping for quite some time.
Replacing the water pump itself is not very hard, but does take a few hours. The hardest part is removing the fan clutch from the water pump. Once you remove the fan and fan clutch, the rest is a piece of cake.
A few warnings you should know:
- The fan clutch has reverse threads where it connects to the pump!
- Removing the fan clutch from the water pump is a hassle. If you don’t have a air hammer / air chisel, it’s hard to do. Tapping the wrench while you turn it works a lot of the time if an air chisel is not available. If those don’t work, I have no other advice. It’s just hard and takes a lot of fiddling.
- I don’t know the proper torque for the water pump bolts, but I went with 18 foot pounds. It seemed good to me.
- The video is for your entertainment only. I’m just some idiot on the internet working on crappy cars and trucks. So if you are following any of my video for actual knowledge - do so at your own risk.

I wanted to thank you for this video..I changed the water pump on my Ram1500 2016 yesterday. I used your video to help me. I was able to complete this job with your help in about 8hours. I'm 64years old..
That’s amazing! Congratulations on a job well done and thanks for the kind words! I’m thrilled that my videos are helpful to people!
I’m about to change my 2013. Just waiting for the sun to go down some. Freaking hot this week🥵
Good vid. Fyi that plug above the thermostat is a high point coolant bleeder. Leave it open. Fill with coolant until it comes out the bleeder. Thanks.
You saved me so much time and a huge headache. Removing the fan shroud and the fan itself would have triggered something that would have been a lot more expensive😅. Thank you for sharing. People like you are the reason I subscribe to youtube.
Heck yes! I’m glad that you found the video helpful! Thanks for watching and subscribing!
And another thing… placing the bolts into the new pump as you pull them, and then transfer to the old pump before reassembly… mind blown!!! I’ve never thought about doing that. Great tip to have
I’m really glad that the video was able to help you out! Being totally obsessed with cars my whole life has lead to some good tricks and life lessons. It’s awesome to have a platform to share them on. Thanks again!
Was scratching my head after breaking my fan shroud today. So glad I watched this now will be going to the store for some zip ties. Thanks for the tip. Great video.
Excellent! I’m glad I’m not the only one that broke it! Thanks for watching and good luck!
Thank you big time for this video! I like that you showed a couple things right up front as to what NOT to do! And the air chisel trick was a life saver. I already had the chisel, but never would have thought about that. Since my truck is 10yrs old and all original I went ahead and replaced idler pulley, belt tensioner, thermostat housing, thermostat, fan clutch and belt all together!
Mine is over 10 years old now (2013). I'm planning to replace the belt and thermostat when I do the water pump. I'm on the fence about the tensioner. Do you have a part number for what you used? I'm seeing them range drastically in price, from $35 to over $100.
Great video love the commentary I'm no longer stressed out about replacing my water pump thank you
Thats awesome! Good luck with the repair!
Same here I’ve been stressing it but after watching this video I feel way better about the whole process
Great tips I wouldn’t have thought of! Great job!
I've never seen a man so happy to change a water pump. 👍
I was trying to make the best of a bad situation!
I like that you showed the do's and don'ts. Very real!
Absolutely! I don’t want somebody making the same mistakes that I did ! Thanks for watching!
Buddy, you just saved me a lot of money showing me how to do it. Thank you so much!
That’s awesome! That is exactly what I was hoping to do!
Man I appreciate the video! One of the best how to videos I’ve witnessed in my life 😂😂 thanks for the help!!! New sub for sure!
Heck yes! Thanks for subscribing! I appreciate it! I’ll keep making videos if people keep watching!
Great video and thank you. Long weekend came, truck over heating, no shops open but had the water pump. Running like a top again. Cheers!
Heck yeah! Congrats on fixing it yourself! Nice work!
I cant believe how lucky some if you guys are to get that fan clutch off so easy.
It took me and my brother with a rented pulley holder tool and me standing on a 3 foot adjustable wrench to get mine off my 2013 ram.
On a old s10 i had i had to cut it off with a sawzall. Use a 1000ft/lb rated impact on it. Had to buy a new clutch.
True! It’s a gamble every time! Hopefully your next one is an easy one!
Nice video. Very helpful. My 2009 ram 1500 is leaking a lil by the gasket seam. As soon as I can I’m doing the job. Your video helps with the what your getting into aspect of the job. Some good tips here too.
Thanks! I really appreciate you watching!
Bout to this tomorrow, feeling more confident after this great vid. Wish me luck!
How did it go?
This guy is hilarious 😂 but on point while being comical, I've watched a previous video and saying to myself why the guy don't take the fan shroud out to have more space to remove the fan and work hence why I went searching n there you are making it easy, thank you.
I’m trying to help out my fellow car people, one broken fan shroud at a time. Thanks for watching the video and commenting. Tell your friends to subscribe too so I can be UA-cam famous! ;)
Hey bro... I watch you clip about changing the water pump on 5.7 hem. It took a bit .. but following your clip made it so I knew what to look for ... Lol you broke the shroud taken it out and I broke it putting it back in ... Lol was getting dark and got in a hurry ... But everything seems ok for now ... Save myself about 250 buck on labor lol .. thanks for helping.
That's awesome! I'm glad the video helped you out & saved you some cash!
Great, my brother told me about using a hammer on the wrench, but seeing it is better for me. I bought a clutch wrench kit and couldn't get the dowels into the holes on the pulley. This helped alot.
Awesome! When all else fails, the air hammer/air chisel works fantastic!
Dude u are the greatest person ever. I tried the air chisel & I have never seen one come off that easy. Ty. U made this job easy u r the best. Ty. Have a great day
Excellent! Every once in a long while, I do have a good tip! Hope you have a great day as well!
Thanks for the video dude
Dude ,this was a great video!!. No bullshit banter and the video shows what we needed to see!
Thank you! Im trying to make the world a better place, one busted truck at a time.
I couldn’t agree more. Video was perfect.
Simple and straight to the point.
That's what I try to do! Help people out without 15 life stories in between. Thanks for watching!
Great video. The best I've watched yet on how to do this. Thanks!
Thank you! I really appreciate that! And thank you for watching!
Stuck on the side of the road now with a failed water pump in my 2015 5.7. Going to tackle this tomorrow after church! Thanks for the video
You’re welcome ! Good luck with the project!
Seriously the best. My hats off to you sir! Best help I've ever had on internet. Loved the part with the zip ties...lmbo so hard because my kid is one of them...😅😅
Thank you, your video was very informative you just saved me about three hundred dollars in labor to have someone replace this water pump for me.
That’s fantastic! I’m really happy that it helped you out! Thanks for watching!
Best video i've seen for this job. And i've been watching A LOT of them.
That’s awesome! Thank you for watching the video! I’m glad it helped you out!
Great overview on what I'm up against. Great surgical stitching on the fan shroud.
I want to thank you for this video. I have a 2015 1500 and water pump started to puke yesterday. Leaving for fishing trip to Northern Wi tomorrow and had to replace today, luckily Advance screw you auto parts had everything in stock. Pump , idler, tensioner, hoses, belt and stat. And had a v6 fan setup so did it all today. Forgot that Ram decided to not put belt diagram sticker on shroud, But browzing through found clips that straightened me out thank.
At what mileage did your water pump go out?
Best video I've seen on the 4th Gen water pump! I'm gonna do mine this week...
Awesome! I’m glad you liked it! Good luck with the repair!
Yep that putting the bolts in the new water pump then back in the old pump for install was Solid Gold made the job on the 2013 4 hours total. Oh we also had the luxury of an air condition garage, it was a perk. Was surprised we got a new fan clutch with the pump, $ 105 at Auto Zone
I left all my boats in the water pump until I pulled it off and just set it up there when I put the new one on and swapped them from one to the other
Yeah brilliant, doing mine tomorrow!
$105 2 years ago... I just bought the pump with the clutch from Autozone today, and it was $184
Great insight on the cooling fan removal with the air impact and the right hand threads and the fan shroud disassembly.
I’m glad you found the video helpful! Thanks for watching!!
left hand threads
@@WiringRescue what air tool do you use to bust fan off
I just wanted to say thanks for the video. I used it to replace my water pump today with it being 7 degrees out in northeast Ohio lol. Thanks again!!
7 degrees is COLD! My garage has been at 22 degrees for a few weeks now and it’s just not usable at that temperature. I’m looking forward to spring!!! Thanks for watching the video, I’m thrilled that it helped you out!
Thanks for the time to make this video. Very helpful
Happy to help! Thanks for watching!
My truck won’t hit operating temp so I’m getting ready to do the thermostat plus the water pump since I’ll have the coolant drained. Good information. Especially with the radiator shroud. Thank you.
Thank you for watching!
2nd sign you see a bunch of antifreeze underneath! LOL! Great video Jeremy! I will be doing mine next week, also installing a EFan instead of Mechanical fan!
Sounds like you have a great plan! Thanks for watching and good luck with the project!!
The little trick with the bolts is great!
I’m glad you like it! Thanks for watching!
Big job! Good job! MY 2012 RAM 1500 has 112K miles. After this Winter I am going to replace mine next spring.
Good luck with yours! It’s not too bad to do.
Wow that’s crazy I have a 2012 as well at 110k and was planning on doing it for peace of mind 😂 I’m pretty sure you had some wrinkles to iron out as well with ur truck 😂
Perfect little video in my opinion....short, helpful with tips/problems to watch out for included. Sense of humor was entertaining also. Give it a 5 stars. Now I can go help my sone change his😁
Haha! Thanks ! Hopefully your repair goes smoothly!
Thanks for the video and the sense of humor! Very much both appreciated! 😂😂😂😂👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for this video. Im sure I will hire someone to do this for me now. I only hope I can get someone who knows what they are doing and are willing to do it right.
Any decent repair shop should be able to do a water pump on a Ram for you. It's very much the same as any other V8 engine going back ~75 years. The only tricky parts are not breaking the fan shroud on the bottom (whoops!) and keeping the bolts organized! Thanks for watching!
Bro I'm about to take on this project on my truck this video is extremely helpful at this point you save me 1/2 day of work thanks blessings to you. "** IF YOU CAN'T DODGE IT^** RAM IT 🐏 😎
That’s fantastic! I’m glad the video is helpful! Tell your friends to subscribe & good luck on your repair!
Thank you very much for the video many good tips
Thank you very much for the video. very detailed information.
Thank you for watching!
Awesome video, thank you!
Happy to help! Glad you liked it!
Thanks! Replaced my water pump a week ago in 4 hours lol that fan bolt was not kind at all. Happy to say no more leaking but now I have a P219A code. It's always something 🙁
I’m glad you were able to successfully swap the pump! If your engine light came on right after the job, it may be something you did. Maybe you mass airflow sensor is unplugged or not installed quite right? Maybe a connector nearby was unplugged by accident? Look around for the easy stuff! Good luck!
Thanks for the video you made a crappy weekend a good day...not to mention all the sarcasm 😀
That’s fantastic! I appreciate you taking the time to watch my video! Thanks a bunch and good luck on your project!
Finally a repair video that doesn't get all technical about shit.
I’m trying my best out here! Thanks for watching!
Great video! Subscribed
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
Well damn, I did the water pump on my '15 Ram 2 days ago. Sure wish I had seen your video before that lol. Oh well....
That’s always the way!! Thanks for watching anyway! :D
enjoyed the video! have to tell you I thought Jim Cary was doing the video at first lol
Great tips
Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
So I just found mine leaking and I will have parts ordered. I plan to do the bolt organizer idea you showed.
Excellent! Good luck with the repair!!
Thanks for the help!
Happy to help!
Thank you sir
Sweet video . Thanks!
Happy to hear you liked it! Thanks for watching!

Great im having one done on my truck today wanted to no what was involved ty
What a great video🤟
Thanks for watching! I appreciate it!
overall good job - i like your persoanlity - yoiu could have gone into more detail about how you removed and installed the fan. Thanks!
Thanks for this! I also have a ram1500 2009 with the hemi. My problem has been to fill coolant as it won’t let me top it up. Right now there is about 8liters or so and the coolant level on the cap on the radiator is barely moving. Also no heat in the car. Any tips?
Awesome video.
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
Thanks dawg 🤘🏻
Happy to help! Thank YOU for watching the video!
Very good . thank you
Thank you for watching!
Do you have a video to show how to get the serpentine belt on right?
Good info, thanks
You’re very welcome!
08:00 That is a very smart move my friend.
That move could save you a LOTTT of confusion!
Thank you! About 25 years ago I took a car apart for a restoration and put all the bolts in a 5-gallon bucket. It was that day that I learned this very important bolt-organization lesson. Lol.
Thank you for watching the video! I appreciate it!
Cool video
Thank you!
I have to replace mine. I’d love to see a video using air hammer to remove fan nut.
Which air chisel bit? You just hit the nut with it? Not really understanding
Thanks for the vid
Thank you for watching!
Thank you sooooo much!
You are very welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thanks!
You rock! Thank you so much! I hope your repair went smoothly!
Thank u for ur video!
Happy to do so! Thank you for watching it!
@@WiringRescue i need a sealer for the little allen key srew on the pump? I dont have it on my new Water pump :/
Thanks bro!
Your welcome! Happy to help!
very informative video and great photos too. will make my job easier for sure

Just a tip, if’ Ya don’t have the air hammer tool thingy, it’s really simple to remove that lower piece of the fan shroud and then remove the rest of the fan shroud and the electric fan at the same time, and then you can remove the water pump with the fan still attached. I stuck the lower hose piece from the water pump over a jack handle and then put Vice Grips in the pulley and then was able to break that fan nut loose. Also nice to have the extra room when ya install the new pump, and then with the engine fan still out of the way, re-install the electric fan and the shroud and install the engine fan from the bottom.
Great info! Thanks for sharing the pro tips!
Hey nice video! I just have a question why did my engine overheat ?
This was a fantastic video I really appreciated the cardboard layout definitely saved and subscribed for what I need to do my water pump
Thank you for watching! I greatly appreciate it!
Please excuse my ignorance, what kind of white sealant did you use on the two bolts? Thank you for uploading this, fellas like you make fixinig your own vehicle so much more approachable.
Hello! I believe it was liquid Teflon sealant. That’s typically what I have handy.
Btw, your vehicle info on your cluster has a digital read out function that shows the actual temperature of your fluids 👍
Hi excellent video learn how do it thanks again
Thank you for watching! I appreciate it!
Thanks
Your welcome! Thank you for watching the video!
Thank you Sir. Your Video was both very interesting and entertaining. Will perform this task on my Dodge next week. Greetings from Germany...
I just found out recently that there's a coolant system bleeding screw I believe it's a 5/16 Allen bolt above the water pump close to the top
Therefore if you crack the bleeder screw and then you may not hooked up completely open that bottom drain

This video is going to be very helpful. I'm needing to replace my water pump on my 2009 Dodge 1500 and also wanting to replace the fan clutch as well. I looked at fan clutches on Rockauto and they list both standard rotation and counter clockwise rotation. Do you know which type I need? 🤔 thanks very much! 😁
Unfortunately, I am not sure. However, if you buy one, you'll have a 50% chance it is right! That's decent odds! Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
@@WiringRescue thanks! 😁👍
Pipe wrenched worked for me getting the fan off
Excellent! I'm glad to hear it came off without a major fight!
How do you undo the connector to the heat sensor?? The red clip
good work brother
Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
@@WiringRescue im a truck and coach technician & i felt i needed to watch this video & i hope others do the same very good video!
@@justinturpin7865 - If you like this one - you may like some of my others too!
@@WiringRescue ill check them out !
We are the same! Lol. Just got one in for my friends truck
Great lol. Just changed the water pump for bad pulley bearing and decided to change the thermostat while I was in there. Now I have no heat and I’m worried I’m gonna overheat the engine
Top off your antifreeze, it’s probably too low.
Would you recommend a gates water pump over a mopar water pump? Both of my 2014 hemis are now on their third oem water pump.. 😆
I know the gates one fits well, and seems to work fine. So if your first 3 were oem, gates might be a nice alternative!
Dude, Awesome video, the way you explain things is great.... My only critique would be, you don't show the work being done. I would like to see the work actually being done, now I understand you're one guy you only have two hands, so I get it. Needless to say, I would like to see the actual wrenching of the volts coming out and the hoses coming out and etc etc. I'm sure you understand.
Other than that, fantastic job, you sir have a new subscriber and I promise to smash that like button 🤘👍👍🤘
Take care buddy.

Glad you enjoyed it! I try to make each video better than the last. I’ll keep these things in mind! Thanks for watching!
I watched your video over and over again and thought I was ready to do the job. I bought a water pump and radiator because I want to overhaul the system, however, I am having a lot of trouble just getting started. I cannot remove the fan. The nut is frozen on. I tried the big wrench and hammer first, and when that didn't work, I tried the air chisel like you did in the video. Then I bought a pneumatic fan clutch wrench ($$), but no luck with that either. It is just not coming loose. I'm anxious to get on with job. Do you have any suggestions? My compressor produces 5 CFM @ 90 psi. Do you know if that's enough power? Thanks
Make sure that you are turning it the correct way. I have read that some of these are threaded the opposite way depending on when the truck was built. I don’t know if that’s true. So it’s worth trying to spin it the opposite way to see what happens?
@@WiringRescue Ok, good suggestion. I never thought of that. If it could be so easy....
Hey man! Where does the top hose coming from the heater core go on the water pump? I took both hoses off the water pump and my markings washed off. Thanks!!!!
I unfortunately didn’t own that truck, so I can’t tell you which hoses go where. Sorry about that!
Great video,EXCEPT, you didnt show how to keep the pump pulley from moving with the fan.
My fan nut is froze and i cant hold the pulley stationary to get the fan off.
Im having a heck of a time. Any other suggestions? HELP. LOL
You didnt have to burp the water pump ? at the Allen key ? Great video I just had a new pump installed when I replaced the motor 2 years ago and the gaskets leaking so I need to do this ugggg
I drove it around the block and then topped off the fluid, and it has been fine since. It’s not actually too bad of a job once you get the mechanical fan off. Just keep track of where all the bolts go because they are ALL different!
@@WiringRescue that is great information to know and thank ya for it :)
Just did this same job the day before yesterday He worked fine until the next day now it's back blowing cold air on the driver side and warm air on the passenger side so how long did your air stay hot
The truck in the video still works fine. Engine temperature is normal and the heat works great! I’d recommend checking your antifreeze level, it may be low.
